uhaul blankets?

Are uhaul blankets okay to put under fleece in a chinchilla's cage? I heard it will absorb the pee. One of my chins pull her fleece up when she wants to get out though. She never eats it. If she finds the blanket is it dangerous?

Siren/ wail? New noise please help.

So I've almost had my chinchilla for a year and used this forum hard-core when I first started, but now I need you guys again.

I've heard the normal barking noise usually late at night when he wants attention, but now there is a new noise, and this one scares me more than the other because I can't find it anywhere or what it means.

This sound usually happens late at night and I will wake up to hear this noise. It usually comes after a loud crash, almost like he is running around and crashes into something and then he makes the noise.

It doesn't start off as the regular bark, first it sounds like a siren. It starts of soft and low and it grows louder and higher. Then it ends in the normal bark noise.

I wish I had some recording but it usually happens in the middle of the night and (while this may sound mean) I usually go back to sleep once it's over.

Please help if you can, it would be nice to at least know that Francis isn't the only chinchila out there making this noise. Thanks!

Hello from MA!

:hello3::chin5:

Hi there! My name is Liz and I'm from MA, USA. I'm the mother of two amazing fluff balls of chinchilla-ness, named Big Guy (yes, that's his name) and Snowflake. Big Guy is almost 2 years old and Snowflake is almost 3. Not sure what else to say right now, but I do want to mention how helpful viewing this forum from afar has been - I was freaking out last week because I thought my Snowflake's "butt shuffling" meant she had a UTI and was about to make a vet appointment, when come to find out it's a behavioral thing that many chins do when they smell strong smells! That's just one example.

Anyways.. hi!

DIY Fleece Liners?

Hey everyone! it's been forever since I've been on here.

I want to start making my own fleece liners for my babies cage. they have a two story fn with the bass metal pans in them. the top level has the cut out and the bottom level is the full size.

does anyone know how to make these? I have blizzard/anti pill fleece but is there anything else I need to make it? what sizes did you guys use for the fabric since it will obviously be smaller once I flip it inside out?

How many layers of fleece do I use? Should I put something inside that's more absorbent?

Please let me know if you have any tutorials/instructions on these!

Thank you so much in advance!!!! :grouphug:

Weight loss and small poop - HELP

Chinchilla lost about 100g and his poops have been small for the last day or two.

I've just ordered some lifeline, but I don't know when that will get here since it's the weekend. I can grab some CC at work, though I just tried to give him some today and he wanted no part of it. This stuff is expired but I had wanted to see if I could get him to eat it. He usually gobbles it right up. He is munching on hay and he's hopping around like normal. He doesn't feel skinny and he's been acting fine aside from the recent small poop. I've slacked off with weighing him(which I know I shouldn't have and I'm so mad at myself for it) so I don't know how quickly this happened.

I'm going to get him into work ASAP. The exotic vet isn't in tomorrow and we are closed on Sundays.
What should I do in the mean time? There is nothing that he should have gotten to that could have caused a blockage or anything.

Fleece Themes

I'm re-doing 2 of my cages and that means new fleece patterns. Having problems finding ones I like for a boy, for one reason or another.

So looking for a little inspiration.... What is your fleece theme? Pictures greatly appreciated.

Painting Cage Bars?

I've got an cage where the coating/paint has come off the cage bars I was wondering if it was safe to repaint the bars or not.

If so, should a certain type of paint be used?

HELLO - Lori here...

I am a new yet old member. I have a beige violet boy and a mosaic girl (both with pedigree) - separate 5' cages - all white pine shelving - non-breeding. I have had them since the age of 8 weeks - they are now both almost 9 years old. I LOVE MY LITTLE FUZZ BUTTS!!!! My male is Magma and is my little teddy bear. Such a sweetheart! My female is Tuya and she is my fluffy fancy tail baby girl. She is very sweet to me but not much for others and definitely has her attitudes - lol. My babies could not be healthier!!! Of course, no excessive treating...especially sweet treating...and Oxbow food with plenty of safe sticks and hay for them to chew on. No running free through the house and both have flying saucer exercise disks in their cages. GLAD TO BE BACK! If it were not for this place, I would have never found my fur babies. I had a third chinchilla which I rescued at the age of 4 years (standard from pet store). They had done a terrible job in raising her. She crossed the rainbow bridge at the age of 6 after having developed mallow from lack of things to chew on and Charlie Chinchilla food during the first 4 years of her life. R.I.P. Chile Chilla...always in my heart. Have a nice weekend, everyone! TGIF!!!

Need advice!

Him everyone! So I have two adorable sweet chinnie boys whom have appeared to have finally bonded. I started with joint playtime in a neutral area, but they only seemed to get along for a few minutes and then aggressive mounting, chasing, and fur pulling would start. I tried side by side cages for a little bit, but that seemed to stress them out. I was about to just give up and put them on separate rooms when I read about cage within a cage and decided to give it a try.

Three days later, they are living in the same cage in harmony. Their chinnie mommy didn't get ANY sleep last night, as it was the first night with no separation.

Anyways, the boys have now been several days without playtime. I know they are missing it, but I am so worried about disrupting the delicate balance that seems to have been created in their cage. What are you opinions on letting them out for playtime?

Attached is a cute picture of them sharing a hidey house. Cute fur babies. :)

Babies Arrived!

Delighted to announce that my furry family has increased with the arrival of :chin2: Pucutu whose name means "thick mist".
She's (at present) a quiet, placid little girl of 12 weeks. Content to be handled as long as she's snuggled close.
:chin1: Tikiri whose name means "makes music and dances".
More outgoing than her sister, will step on my hand and run up my arm to sit on my shoulder and wiffle in my ear.
Both girls have Inca names and are standard grey though Pukutu is darker and slightly stockier.
Really lucky so far as both girls are behaving like little :angel8: eating, drinking, pooing as they should be and using litter tray, not chewing fleece  though early days and could all change.
Very grateful for the help and support I received here when I was getting ready for their arrival.
Pics to follow asap

Baby chin sleeping a lot? And is very cuddly?

Hi, I recently adopted two brother chins who are about 10 weeks now (they were weaned at 8 weeks).
The one chin is very active, loves to run, doesn't like to be held for very long(which I understand chins can be like that), eats, drinks, seems fine.
The other brother eats, drinks, runs around some, always wants to be held. When I walk by his cage, he comes to the door always wanting out, and when he's out, he wants to be held and cuddles up to my chest and falls asleep. He will lay there for up to half an hour.
I let them out for about half an hour or less a day because I know they can exhaust themselves because they are so small at the moment. The active chin will run forever, but the cuddly one will hop around for about 10 minutes and then come to me and sleep in my lap.
I've looked around and haven't found very much on a cuddly chin. It's just been worrying me a lot. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi! I'm Ashley From The US.

Hi everyone! I'm just introducing myself, I joined 8 days ago.

A little bit about me:

-My name is Ashley.

-I am female.

-I love chinchillas!

-I have a YouTube channel about my chinchillas! It is FourPawsVlogs, you should check out my videos, I dont have many videos up right now, as I only recently started! I actually want to do a Q&A so if you have any questions for me to put in my video, then please list them, I have 0 questions so far. :-(

Pets:

-I have 4 chinchillas! They're all males, their names are Boomer, Hunter, Tank, and Charger. (You may recognize these names from Left 4 Dead 1&2)

-Boomer got his name because he is the fattest, Boomer in the game is the fattest zombie.

-Hunter got his name because he is the most agile/active, Hunter from the game pounces everywhere and is the fastest one.

-Tank got his name because he was the feistiest when they were introduced, in the game the Tank is the hardest zombie to fight because he does lots of damage.

-Charger got his name because he has extra front toes, and one is pretty big, Charger from Left 4 Dead 2 has one HUGE arm, like Chargers HUGE toe. (I had the toes checked to make sure its size wasn't anything bad/hurting him)

-Boomer and Hunter were purchased from the same breeder in Tennessee at the same time (in July 2015) because they were already bonded and living in the same cage, they are approx. a year old now, although I don't know their exact birthday.

-Charger and Tank were rescued from a man (in January 2016) who did not care for them anymore, and they were actually an "accident" from his other two chinchillas. They are about 6 months old, and once again I do not know their birthdays.

I love to chat and would love to make some new friends on here! :grouphug:

Hello!

Hello! I'm brand new here, and excited for all the interaction and information. I came across this forum during a frantic google search in early hours of Edgar's first night here, when he woke me from a deep sleep with a scream-bark that terrified me. I flipped on the light and he sat there next to his food bowl just looking at me. He's had my heart ever since.

Edgar says hello too!

Introducing Chins

Hello! I have had my male chin Roscoe for 7 months now, I recently started a new job and work nights and wanted to get him a companion. I was at a petsmart and saw a what they say is 4 month old male chin, so I bought him. Roscoe has a 4 level cage that I recently bought, so I put the new chin, Ollie, in roscoe's old smaller cage. I put the cages about 5 inches away from each other. It's been 1 week so today I put them in the play pen I bought from petsmart together and they sniffed each other then roscoe started what looked like humping ollie. Ollie ran from him and they chased each other, I didn't see any biting. They kind of hopped around each other and would buck up to each other and then roscoe would jump on ollies back again. I put the bath house in with them and at one point they both got in it together but I didn't see any fighting. Eventually Ollie actually tried to hump roscoe, at least that's what it looked like. Is this normal? They are both back in their separate cages, I figured I'd let them out again together later tonight. I guess I just want to make sure this is normal introduction behavior.

Looking for male baby

I am looking to adopt a male baby chinchilla. I have a 1.5 year old white mosaic male. I am looking for a breeder who handles their chinchillas and offers them play time, toys, and stimulation. I am looking to adopt a baby with a long line of healthy chins.

I currently live in TN, but I travel to NJ often. I am looking for breeders in between eastern TN and Southern NY. This includes TN, VA, NJ, PA, NY, etc. I am willing to travel.

I would like to meet the chin first! Thank you.

How do I fix a Lixit valve bottle?

I have had this Lixit valve bottle - the blue flip top one - sitting around for months because water does not come out of it. Today I decided to take the valve apart to see if there is some mechanism I can loosen to let the water flow when the valve is pushed. Um. I can't find a way to get it apart. Does it not come apart? Does anyone know? If it doesn't come apart, I don't know how I would clean out the valve either, which I'm sure is important to do occasionally.

Right now Elena is on a glass water bottle with the ball valve, not sure of the ounces but it's big for one chin. When I had Tseng too it was fine, but now she just doesn't drink enough of it before I have to clean it so I have to dump most of the water if I want to clean it daily or even every other day. I'm not using tap water so this is a huge waste of water I'm paying money for. So I got a smaller bottle. The thing is, it has a smaller valve, and a smaller cap, and she wouldn't use it. I don't think she was getting enough water out of it. And the bigger ball valve cap doesn't fit on the small bottle. So I got the Lixit, hoping she would be ok with the push valve, and I can't get it to work. Frustrated!

So is there a way to adjust the flow on this water bottle or is it just a lost cause? I really don't want to toss it if I can fix it, but if there's nothing I can do ... and it's way too late to return it. Does anyone know about the secret inner workings of the Lixit flip top?

Thanks,
Danielle

Squishing Self Against Floor?

The last few times Rue has been out for playtime, he's started to do this after an hour or so. He'll either sit outside his cage or on a fleece blanket I have hanging up to block part of the room off, and he'll just hunker down with his paws under him and flatten his ears back against his head and lay his head on the ground. Today he started putting his paws on my foot and laying his head on it. It's really cute to see, but I'm worried he might be getting startled by something (but I don't know what it could be!) or if it is just him getting tired. I leave his cage open for him to go back in whenever he wants to be done playing. Here a picture I managed to get of him doing it today. (Sorry again if it's big, I'm on my phone and don't know how to resize it.) He stayed like this for probably two minutes, and he's not usually one that likes to be held. He's definitely not humping in the picture either :') Just curious if he's unhappy or not so I can try and make him feel better.

Sick Chinchilla! Need help ASAP

This morning I noticed my female chinchilla walking with a hunched back. I went to check it out and noticed she'd been having very runny diarrhea. She hasn't had any more since I noticed a few hours ago, but she has only been moving slightly. I gave her hay and burnt toast. I've seen her eat some hay and drink some water, but I can't get her to eat the toast even though she normally loves it. I'm unemployed and my guardian says she won't pay for it. I've begged her but she says she doesn't have the money. I've caller around seeing if anyone does payment plans but everywhere has refused. I'm worried for her and any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Too much hay?

Hi,

I've been noticing that my Chin leaves a lot of hay left over (and pellets). Wondering if maybe I'm using too much, I generally just try to err on the side of caution and have plenty in there. Also, is the excess hay alright to leave for a day or so or does it go bad after 24hrs?

New Chinchillas and questions

My family and I just bought chinchillas this past week. Today we cleaned out their cage for the first time and I have some questions. First, when we had rats, they seemed to only want to use the bathroom in one spot in their cage. We were expecting this and so we left one level relatively bare of things to do, so they could use that as their "bathroom" space. Our boys don't seem to care where they go, they even go in their food. Are we doing something wrong?
Second, we got a wire sided cage - the inside has plastic inserts over the wires and slip covers for the ramps so it will be good for their feet - and when the chins are playing, they throw out pieces of their paper bedding (pellets of paper) with every jump. After just one day we have TONS of paper pellets and poop all over our floor. Needless to say, we are hoping to find a solution to this because we would prefer not to have to vacuum the room every day (and replace the vacuum bag every week). Thanks in advance for your help.

Chinchillas AND hedgehog...? Help! 9 Questions!

Hi, I just registered to this website and have no idea if this is how you post a question but, here goes! (sorry it's a bit long...)

ALL QUESTIONS ARE BOLDED (9 QUESTIONS)

I have 4 male Chinchillas (as pets) and they all live together VERY WELL in harmony, but as my hamster recently passed away (from old age), I would like to get a hedgehog, but what I'm scared of is that since chinchillas and hedgehogs are very different from each other, can I keep them in the same house? I know not to house them in the same cage, but I would like to keep the hedgies cage in the room next to where the chinchillas are (they are in my room).

I also know that hedgies go into hibernation if it gets too cold, which is deadly, so I'm sure 70 is too cold for hedgies, but chinchillas shouldn't go near 80, so (my house is usually 70) can I keep the hedgie in the room next to mine warmer using a heater? (obviously not CLOSE to the cage)

As I noted above that I have 4 males, and I know to never get a female chinchilla because all the males (no matter how bonded they are) will fight (possibly to the death) over the female chinchilla in heat. Would the males still fight over a hedgie in heat even if they are different animals in different rooms?

I always take my chinchillas out to play every single day in my room so, when they are in the cage, if I'm holding her and I have to get something, and pass by them I do not plan to introduce them to each other, but I might have to take my hedgie through my room to get something, is that dangerous?

Can I take my hedgie out in the room next to mine to play every day?

There is nothing in the other room that a hedgie could climb on and fall off of, or get stuck under, plus s/he will be supervised cautiously! (I will triple check before I adpot)

I sew fleece for all my chins and I would like to do the same for my hedgie's bedding (but dont they need to burrow?)

Any recommended cages? Any cages that should NOT be used? I can't really have a C&C cage because I also have cats, and either way it is not a cage that I personally like anyway.. The door to my room is always shut to keep cats out and away from the chins, and I can do the same for a hedgie.

Also, I only plan to have 1 single hedgie (hopefully female, if having her in the same house as 4 male chins is okay) is that stressful for her to be alone?

I only want the best for all my pets that I ever own. Which brings me to my last question.. What more do I need for a hedgie?

I already have:

-Place to put a cage
-Sleep sack/hide away (I can afford/make multiple if needed)
-Water bottle
-Food dish
-I have a wheel but it may be too small (I'm planning to upgrade)
-I can easily find crickets/mealworms/etc in my pet stores
-I have aspen bedding/shredded paper (if I can't use fleece)
-I can order food online (its not a nuisance)
-I have a hedgie already in mind to adopt (if this thread says positive things)
-I have nail trimmers and I can purchase baby safe shampoo
-A heater (if needed to keep in the hedgies room for more warmth)

I know its a LOT of questions, but please help!

Water Bottle

Hi, I am just wondering what kind of/brand glass water bottle people are using for their chinchilla?? The last 2 that I have bought, have begun leaking and I can't seem to fix them. Thanks for any advice or information!

Reputable breeder?

A friend of mine is looking into getting a hedgie. I'm not sure the breeder is reputable. Is there anyone who would be able to help me find out if this breeder is reputable?

Why hello!

Hi there! I've just joined the forum, but I've been lurking for a while. It started after I googled probably the strangest thing I ever will- "Can Chinchillas have nightmares?"!

And the reason for googling this is because we own two male chins, occasionally one of them will start barking in his sleep!
The reason I thought of nightmares is because they will be laid separately, asleep, and one will just start barking!

Anyway, after googling I found out they can have nightmares- According to people on this forum anyway.

So, a bit of an intro... Well, TBH with you all- I took over the care of my fiancé's chinchillas because he wasn't entirely caring for them.

Unfortunately due to space limitations they aren't in the biggest cage currently as we were forced to move into a small 1-bed flat. Don't get me wrong, it's not *tiny*. It's just not what would be classed as big enough for a pair. However, I have plans to fix this when we move into a bigger place which shouldn't be long at all.
They have a large 8 sided run which gets set up daily for them to stretch out in as well, which usually means my living room is taken over by chinchilla stuff!
The boys we own are a standard grey called Nibbler and a Black Velvet called Shadow.
Nicknamed Nib Nib and Snubby(he has a snubby nose).

Nibbler is around about 5 years old now, he was bred by my fiancé himself.
Snubby was bought as a pair of male from the dreaded Pets At Home... This is because Nibbler used to live with his dad, Chip. Chip sadly passed away leaving Nibbler pining badly. He wouldn't eat properly, wouldn't move, just sat in a corner crying most of the time. This went on for two or so weeks before we decided to get him some more companions. The three males got on perfectly for about 5 months, but that didn't last. Nibbler and Shadow started bullying Midnight(the other male) quite badly and they had to be separated.

Anyway, here's some pictures!
This is the large run that I set up for them daily.

And the boys themselves- During dust baths xD
Shadow- AKA Snubby. The Black Velvet.

Nibbler- AKA Nib Nib. The Standard Grey.

And back in their normal colours.
About to be cleaned out, Snubby's ready!

Nibbler happily chomping away.

Seizure?

Henry just had what I think may have been a seizure, very suddenly curling up on his side (I mean with his nose going towards his tail), then went round in circles, then staggering around. The vet said seizures were jerky and I'm not sure that's quite how I'd describe it, and he wasn't totally unaware the entire time I don't necessarily think, so don't know if it was or not. I gave him a cranberry and he ate it, while it didn't last very long, he seemed to go back to normal and then not right, not a seizure exactly but seeming out of it, lying flat again. He went back and forth between those states and is resting now. It did look like what I witnessed before after I seemed to have concussed him, so don't know if there's a connection (of course feel very responsible), but then he'd seemed to be less active and less alert and I wasn't sure if he was well for some time before that.

Before it happened, the last few days I'd started to think he seemed a bit out of it, glazed over at times, not eating as much pellets, at one point he climbed onto my shoulder but felt sort of odd, limp almost. This evening right before it happened, he was playing, I'd just fed him, he'd watched the girls be fed and noticed they'd got a toy (was I think anticipating/wanting), I let him sniff my hand which I think smelt of them since he seemed interested, given him an apple stick, seemed very happy with that. I walked back in after being in the kitchen or about ten minutes and he was lying flatter than usual in his box. I could've thought he was resting after playing (which he's started to be sooner to do but not sure if he is quite right when doing so), but he just didn't look right. He seemed to snap back to normal as I talked to him, but, I don't know, it wasn't like going from resting to active, it was like a light being switched back on, and although he was bouncing round he was moving between things like his dust and bowl quickly almost like he didn't know what he was doing. Then he very suddenly curled onto his side. I sort of wondered if he'd got overly stressed/excited by all the stimulus (food, awareness of the girls, scent, toy) and if that was a trigger. It was horrible to watch and I honestly thought he was going to die suddenly (please can anyone tell me if that's likely? He'd looked fine earlier in the evening so it was such a shock).

I don't know if it was a seizure but would guess it was neurological? I had a rabbit once who caught I think a protozoa infection, it sort of reminded me of that in the way he circled (rabbit recovered initially and lived for some time longer seeming Ok but seemed to die from it eventually).

He's just come down and eaten some hay and looks a bit better right now, but I'm not sure if he'll go back into that sort of state again. I can take him to the vet tomorrow but the one who sees most chins isn't on and I'm not really sure what they should look for or what treatment there might be (that's safe for chins) if any.

Chinchilla breed/colouring

Hello there :)

I have been trying to determine the breeding of my little chinchilla, Alfie.

He lives with another male chin called Charlie who I am positive is a Standard Grey breed because of his distinctive grey colour with a pure white belly, however, Alfie is light grey all over with no white on his belly at all.

I came to think he was possibly a charcoal but didn't know if his colouring was too light to be a charcoal or not?

Can anyone shed a light onto this for me as i would be interested to know for hopeful breeding purposes in the future.

Thank you all.

Hello

How is the child of my old forum doing?

I still have one of the Chinchillas that I had when I started making hedgehog wheels and created Chins & Quills. She is about 19 years old now.

preping wood question

I was given some pear wood that has a green powder on it, looks like some kind of algea.
I'm wondering if it ok to use, I can scrub it off with soap and water, but am
wondering if whatever it is could still be there unseen. The wood was from an
un-sprayed tree. Should I try to use it ? I still need to boil and bake it.
Just wodering if anybody else has come up with this.

Thanks

Bedding vs Fleece vs Tile

Hi all!

Just wanted some opinions on what beddings have worked best for you. Particularly, which ones smell the least and are easiest to clean. I never really wanted to do wood shavings because I felt they would be hard to keep clean/expensive as well as seem messy. I have been using fleece and washing 2x per week. It is a bit smelly but not too bad. My main issue is that the fleece is always covered with hay or toy debris and hard to clean. How do you spot clean your fleece in between washes?

I noticed on a YouTube video someone got tiles measured and cut for the cage. She just wipes up the pee daily and vacuums the poop. Any experience with this?

Thanks!

Breeding a tan chinchilla

Hey guys, I have a tan male chinchilla whose parents were beige and ebony. I was curious if my tan was breed would ebony show at all? For example, what would the possible kits look like if he was breed with a pink white or standard? I have been trying to learn more about genetics, thanks!

Helps please...

hello everyone!
Ilive in a small town of Greece. Exotic vets here are ""rare". I have a male chinchilla almost 2 years old...fatty had an accident 4days before.. somehow he cut his tail. The cut is located towards the end of his tail. Missing skin, not bone. He's been acting fine, eating e.t.c I took him to the vet, he gave me a treat/protect against bacterial infections, cream. I think the fact that my babe is not in constant pain is a good sign as pain is usually a sign of infection.Fatty keeped chewing at the area when i put the cream on. I took him to another vet (the second and the last one) So the vet gave us an e-cone, told me to stop with the cream and gave me antibiotics,antiinflammatory/painkillers for 5 days.We are on the 4 day , I think somehow he can reach his tail and chewing it...cause every morning his tail is sweating again. More over... one of his medicine provokes constipation. His poo are just a few and extremly small. This situation drives me crazy, i dont know what to do please..
Any advice is appreciated!
I apology of my poor English.

3 month old chin - bald spot

Hi,

I'm a new chin owner and have a health related question. I noticed a small bald batch near my chins nose. The area is not red or irritated and I don't see a sign of fungus. Just wondering if other people have run into this and possible root cause.

Critical care given in a bottle?

Hi,

Has anyone successfully attempted to give their chinchillas Critical Care (mixed with water) in a bottle? Much like you do with their regular water. I understand I have to be extra careful with bottle hygiene, but apart from that - can I harm him by doing this?

Thanks for your input!

Heart Murmur

Hi all

My nearly 13 year old Chinchilla has just been diagnosed with a heart murmur (the vet thinks a grade 2-3) - he was appearing a little lethargic, his only symptom, although some of his poos were a little small.

To rule out his lethargy possibly being caused by something else (as opposed to heart disease) he prescribed something for his guts - he has had this for the past two days and seems more like his old self.

But obviously I now know he has a heart murmur which I understand are quite common in chinchillas - an echo has been recommended. One quote I have for this is quite expensive - he is a specialist and goes to a vets not that far from me every three weeks (hence the expense I guess).

Is this the best course of action if my chinnie is now displaying his normal behaviour? Would it be most likely he does not have heart disease, going on that he does not have other very obvious symptoms? Would an echo be conclusive as to what was going on?

Hope you can help.

Thanks

Vets

Hi!
If anyone needs a chinchilla vet in the Vancouver area, I found a GREAT one! Everyone there is so knowledgeable and kind, with great prices! The vet checked out my chins eye (blind) just for his own curiosity! no fee. :)

It's called "Vancouver East Veterinary walk-in clinic" also, the "Arbutus West Animal Clinic" is GREAT!

In need of Vancouver, BC area foster home for 2 sweet female chins

Hey all,

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to foster my 2 sweet chinnie girls in Vancouver, BC, Canada? Preferably by March 1st. I am ideally looking for someone who is stable, loves chins, has chins, takes very good care of their chins (ie. has done their research and really cares what’s best for them) and can easily and happily take on two more. Hopefully with the option of me visiting them every once in awhile, at least in the beginning. I love them very much. If I can’t find anyone on here with experience I will find someone new and eager, and educate the heck out of them.

Their names are Luxe and Luna (as you might have noticed from my super creative username :D). See attached photo below; it’s older but they look pretty much the same! Luna is on the left (standard grey), Luxe is on the right (brown velvet). They are sisters, now 7 years old, born June 2008 (Gemini twins! and totally different personalities to boot). Despite their obvious differences, they are inseparable, and constantly cuddling. Luxe is more active, interested in others, though she doesn’t like being picked up from inside her home as much. Luna is more shy and withdrawn and will take a while to warm up to someone, though she is a little easier to hold (she really doesn’t like being over-handled, though, as in having treatments given to her—poor girl has had 3-4 seizures that I’m aware of over the course of her life, which all passed after about 10 minutes or so, and I treated her with honey as I suspect it’s her blood sugar. Aside from that they have both been amazingly healthy, and I have never needed to take them to the vet, except for the checkup I gave them in 2012 to bring them across the border). They both warm up more the more they are interacted with and let out to play, but it has been awhile since I’ve been able to play with them outside their home. I have had them since August 2008, so they have been with me for almost their whole lives! They have even traveled on a 4-day road trip with me from Pittsburgh, PA (where they were born and where we lived for 4 years) to Vancouver, BC, and have since moved with me a few more times. I know if it’s stressful for me, it must be for them as well.

I'm currently in a bit of a housing/life bind, and may or may not be able to find a place that allows chinchillas; I'm looking for rooms/shares, so this can be tough—I’m also currently living out of town which is making the search more complicated (I will be bringing them back to the area with me either way, because I want them to be close by and near decent vets!). I was also going through a difficult time with money and mental health the past few years, and they haven't been receiving as much attention as they used to, or as I believe they deserve. I’m now getting back on my feet and looking for a new place I can afford. I have found a potential room with awesome people whom I can relate to, and who I know will help inspire me to greater heights, but unfortunately their landlord won’t allow chinchillas. They are kindly fighting for me to keep them there, however I’m thinking it might be a sign from the universe that it’s time for all of us to move on. I am sad that I might have to give them up, but I’m trying to do what I think is best for all of us. I want them to be very happy for the remainder of their lives. Even if I did find the right housing for both of us, I'm unsure whether I'll have the mental focus necessary to take care of them in the way they deserve—lots of playtime, love, and funds necessary for them to live like queens! Okay maybe that's not necessary, but I think they deserve it.

I have taken very good care of them aside from my slight inattentiveness the past few years. Only the best! They have a customized Chinchilla Townhome on casters from Quality Cage, all galvanized stainless steel and wood, which I recently took apart and cleaned as well as I could. It’s still in pretty darn good condition after 7 years, despite the finish coming off on some of the metal and some of the wood shelves (which I believe I have only replaced once) getting chewed up. In addition to their normal home they have a travel home, also stainless steel from Quality Cage (about half the size of the normal one, for trips, etc) and a 2-door stainless steel travel carrier. They also have a Ware playpen, three separate pens that link together to create different sizes. They had a cardboard maze, which they enjoyed, but I seem to have temporarily misplaced it in my last move—perhaps it will turn up. They also have a 15” chin spin wheel (which still works great!), two nest boxes, a nice steel hay rack, two steels tunnels which they sleep in often, from which I’ve removed the fleece—they used to have a hammock, as well, but cannot have fleece or fabrics in their cage, as Luna has a bad habit of chewing and eating things she’s not supposed to (hence no plastic either).

You will also be receiving all of their food and supplies, including some apple wood sticks for chewing (their favourite wood so far), blue cloud dust and glass bathing jars, 2 granite shelf tiles to keep them cool, steel and ceramic bowls and glass water bottles, toy-making supplies (apple whirlies, pine, pumice, Chinese finger traps—they love all of these), pine shavings/bedding (no aromatic oils), etc. I also have some health/medical supplies for emergencies, etc, which I have yet to really use. They are currently eating Alderpark pellets which I order from Vancouver Island for an excellent price, though they used to eat Mazuri. They are also currently eating Oxbow Timothy Hay. They drink 3-stage filtered (to eliminate Giardia) or spring water. Their treats usually consist of organic dried hibiscus flower, rosebuds, rose hips, and occasionally other flowers. They absolutely love them.

If anyone is willing to take them and love them, please let me know ASAP!

head tilt..HELP!

Around 5 weeks ago I woke up to my 1 chinchilla Louis with his head tilted and flopping around his cage. We rushed him to the vet and they determined a deep inner ear infection.. He has been on antibiotics, an inflammatory/ pain med and antibiotic ear drops that we have been giving him 2 times a day since.. He had his check-up this past weds.. still goop coming out of his ear so we are continuing with the ear treatments... now he starts to run around a little bit but it's like he goes limp and just lays there...then we he tries to walk he's falling over and flopping on his side... what could be wrong? HELP PLEASE!!

Fighting Chinchillas/bitten ear

Hi, I've had my two chinchillas for over a year now and they are brothers and have been together since they were born although recently they have been fighting a lot.
They first started fighting about 2 months ago and showing aggressive behaviours towards each other such as 'dominant mounting' (i don't know what it's called) and barking at each other a little. I supidly dismissed it as I thought since they were brothers etc they should be fine. A couple of weeks later, one of them started biting the fur out of the other's back and then after this I separated them for a couple of days and then when re-introduced they were fine. Although after a week of re-introducing they started fighting again and the cycle repeated again and again.
Although, I woke up this morning to find that the aggressive chinchilla (as its only one who starts the fights) has bitten part of the other chinchilla's ear and that a lot of fur is off his back. I only re-introduced them after another fight a week or so ago and this has happened.
The ear has 2-3 marks on it and has dried blood surrounding it and my chinchilla has been shaking a lot after last night. I've seperated them and I'm giving the injured chinchilla a long playtime/treats and dust baths to help calm him down but he's hiding in the corner of the room and won't run about as usual.
I'm really worried and I don't know what to do. Can anyone give me advice on how I should go about healing his ear, how to calm him down and what I should do about the conflict between the two chinchillas?? Thank you
>> I just want to put out there that my chinchillas are living in a 6+ feet tall cage with plenty of chew toys, a 16 inch wheel, high quality food and are given play times. And I'm almost certain these behaviours are not coming from stressful/poor conditions. Thank you xx

Hi from Scotland!

Hey I'm Alicia from Scotland.
I own two chinchillas who were named- Tea and Cappuccino (idk why) although now I call them Bear and Cappy.
They are two years old, one is standard grey (bear) and the other is beige with pink eyes (cappy).
I joined this forum since I'm having some concerns with them and hopefully I can get some help but for now I just want to say hi ;)))

critical care

How do you recommend weaning a chin off critical care?
How can you tell when a chin is ready to come off critical care?
My chin was spayed Tuesday and hasn't been eating on her own (at least not enough to notice). I'm giving her 1/2tablespoon (before adding water) of CC every four hours. She gobbles it up like she is absolutely starving. I'm not sure why she won't eat her food if she is so hungry. I'm not sure how to go about getting her back on her food and how to know when to do so.
*pooping, peeing & alert.
*also on .34ml baytril every 12hrs and .4ml metacam every 24hrs.
Thank you!

Chinchilla BLOATING HELP!!!!!!!!!!

So since yesterday night I noticed my chinchilla was on his side and was lethargic. He kept stretching his stomach really low and no poop, no energy, and not eating. He would sit in his litterbox focusing on pooping. I had simethicone. I gave him twice with few hours apart.

Today morning, I took him to emergency vet. He pooped very tiny small round poops which are a sign of constipation. The vet gave him fluids, Buprenorphine 0.3 mg (Pain reliever), and Cisapride.

They had no injectable reglan. I took him home, he seems sedated from the medicine and all he wants to do is sleep. He's so tired, doesn't move at all, doesn't poop, nor eat. He won't even swallow or move his mouth. It's been about 8 hours since being at the vet. I try feeding him critical care but he doesn't move his mouth so its impossible to feed him. I don't know what to do. Right now he is just lifeless, breathing, and sleeping. Please help on what to do, what is wrong, and anything that will help him. Please pray for him.

Chinchilla Bonding

Hi all :)

We have had 1 chinchilla girl (Lilo) for a few weeks now.
Last sunday we brought 2 new female chins home, Angel of 10 weeks old and Nani, her mom of around 6 years old.
Currently Angel and Nani are in a smaller cage until they all can get along together in the big cage Lilo is currently in.
When trying to introduce them together, Lilo and Angel work out fine, a lot of running around and sniffing.
But when Nani also joins Lilo starts to get very dominant and pulling fur out of both Angel and Nani.
This evening Lilo even stood up on her hind legs and started spraying at them.
Of course we separated them, but just now Nani started chasing and biting Angel!?
Why would she be attacking her own baby?

What is the best we can do now to try and get the three of them to get along so they can join the same cage together?

Sick Chin any help appreciated!!!!!

Tried to post in general but it said i need approval. I used to post here haven't logged in for a loooooong time tho.

So our chin dusty isn't doing well. He is about 7 years old and we have had him since he was a baby.
Yesterday we found his left eye swollen and "glued shut" from discharge.
He is also having a hard time breathing accompanied with nasal discharge and wheezing.

My wife and I took him to an emergency vet as soon as we got home last night. The vet said, there is gurgling in his lungs, as well as in his lower lungs. She does not specialize in exotics and go figure they did not have any baytril. She said his heart sounds good, we were concerned since his brother died overnight from what we guess was heart failure last January. (Acting normal the night before no changes in behavior, but passed away throughout the night.)

His front teeth are ok as well, but she couldn't see his back teeth obviously.

She sent us home with Sulfamethoazle and Trimethoprim. And a prescription of Oflocacin eye drops for his eye. This morning his eye was glued shut again.
He did not eat or drink last night. We are giving him critical care today.

We just gave him his prescription, and now he is perking up, it may be just because his eye is open again.
As i type this he is trying to itch his eye on his cage and just took a bite of food, and now is investigating the fresh hay we gave him. he always seems to perk up a bit after his oral prescription.

If we don't see an improvement with his discharge we are getting some baytril from our vet on Saturday.

What else can we do, what to look for, what are we missing. ??????

Behavioral Changes

A little background: My chin, Chubbs, is around 5 years old. I adopted him about 5 months ago and we get along great. In fact, he trusts me a lot more than my fiancee. He barks at him fairly often and has even bit him a few times, but he's never been aggressive towards me at all. Over the past few weeks, he has started to bond with my fiancee a little better.

Lately I've noticed some behavioral changes. This past week or so, Chubbs seems withdrawn. He doesn't appreciate attention lately. He assumes I'm giving him a treat (oats) when I open his enclosure, and if I'm not, he can't be bothered. He used to love scratches behind the ears, but now he just kind of tolerates it for a second and backs away. He doesn't seem scared, just irritated. He also used to love to sniff my face, even nibble on my nose, but he doesn't want that either. Last night he even barked at me when I was petting him goodnight (which is a routine for us).

Should I be worried?

chinchilla eye questions

so my 11 month old chin Zoey occasionally gets what I think is sleep crustys in her eye that closes it shut. it doesn't happen very often but I feel as though its been happening more often (about twice a week). im wondering if I should take her to the vet or not shes acting fine, eating normal, drinking normal, shes still playful and rambunctious. I did wipe her eye with a damp cloth and now its wide open and looks ok. the outside is a little pink tho and in the light it looks like her pupil is a clearish white. I wonder if its an infection or just irritation. if someone could give me a little advise until I can get in to see the vet that would be fantastic

Thinning/bald patch?

Hi all,

I hope this is in the right place as it is my first post.
I am new to owning a chinchilla although I have family and friends who have been owners for years and am looking for some advice. I have noticed the last couple of days my chin has developed a thinning patch/ bald patch on one of his back legs, it is only small and doesn't appear dry or scaly. He is only 5 months old and is still his usual lively self and eating and drinking as usual. It doesn't seem to be bothering him and there are nother other patches anywhere else. Does anyone have any ideas what it may be and if it needs treating or will be OK?
Sorry the pictures are not very good but he isn't very good at staying still lol.

Thanks

Kayley

Being a Worry Wort about new Kit.

Ok, it's 2:30am in England and I have an early start in the morning, but instead of sleeping peacefully I'm awake fretting about having everything just right for my new arrival.:read::confused3:
What do I stuff the fleece that covers the metal base pan with?
How much headroom is needed between shelves?
I have measured the bottom section of the cage and if I had ledges 6" up from base. Each shelf being 5" long with a 6" gap between shelves.
Then 6" above first set of shelves, 5" long shelves, 6" apart filling in gaps of first shelves I would need 28 shelves to do both ends of cage and 22 shelves to do the 2 sides.
Is this too much?
There is a built in metal shelf 1/2 way across the cage, 1/2 way up. I did wonder if I should take this out and just have wooden shelves and fleece hammocks instead?
Without this shelf it would be much easier to hang hammocks.
Here's a reminder of what cage looks like, minus the metal ladders.
AVENTURA Tall ALL METAL CHEWPROOF Rat Ferret Chinchilla Degu Large Cage 1152 http://ift.tt/1SkSrks
Thanks for all the help to date, sorry there are so many questions I just want my Kit to be healthy and happy living in the very best home I can provide.
By the way are the bar spacings ok for a new kit?

Hi from uik

Hi all,

I am a new chin owner and have had my little pink white; gavin for around 10 weeks now and he is 5 1/2 months old now. He is a very lively and outgoing guy and very friendly and inquisitive. I hope this forum can be of some use to me and stop me pestering my relatives who are long term chin owners with millions of questions lol.

Kay :)

Too much water?

My chin was spayed Tuesday and came home yesterday. She is alert and active (trying her hardest to get out any time i open the cage). She is on .34ml of Baytril every 12hrs and .4 ml Metacam every 24hrs. She is only eating a few bites on her own so i am syringe feeding CC mixed with Probiotics.

My question is, can it be dangerous for her to consume too much water in the CC? In order for it to be thin enough in the syringe its about a 3-1 ratio (.5 Tablespoon of CC with 1.5-2 Tablespoons of water). Im giving it about every 4hrs. Her urine is very light yellow.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Possible date for New Arrival :~)

Got a call yesterday to tell me that at present Chinchilla babies are due to arrive at the pet shop at the end of next week 19/20th Nov.
They have to stay a couple of days and can then go to new homes!
My birthday is 21st, looks as though my prezzie to myself will be my baby:clap::bliss:
Now trying to make absolutely sure everything is in place before little one comes.

Tradition feed - in need asap!

I find myself once again in emergency need of Tradition feed. I placed an order at Ryerson 2.5 weeks ago....which apparently they never received the *order*, only my *PAYMENT* (grrr!). my supply is down to a day or two and i NEED food!

anyone in the area that uses Tradtion that I can "borrow" or buy from? ill drive to you! I am in the Western Chicago suburbs but will make a trip wherever I need to go. or does anyone know any local feed stores that carry Tradition on hand? Already called Ludwigs, they are out.

(i appreciate the sentiment, but please dont reply just to tell me that they dont "need pellets" for a few days. mine do! i have a special needs little guy and he needs his pellets as he has a very hard time with loose hay. i dont mean to sound rude, but these types of answers wont help me and I'm already frustrated! grr!)

but on that note..... where else does everyone (in general) order their Tradition from? I think I will need to use a new supplier in the future for more orders..... cant trust Ryerson anymore!

Uncovered Metal Bass Pans

I have a Ferret Nation with the Metal Bass Pans. I see that lots of people line them with fleece but I just leave mine bare. I have a potty bowl filled with Carefresh (my girls don't eat it) that I keep under the water bottle and for the most part they pee in it, but my one girl Annie likes to stick her butt out of her tube and pee. Having the bare metal pans makes it really simple to clean. I empty their potty bowl and wipe down the pans everyday. Of course they poop everywhere.

I have lots of shelves, tubes and hidey houses in the cage so its not like they are just on bare metal all the time.

I was just curious if anyone else just left their pans bare? I think if I used fleece they would get stinky in just a day and that would be alot of maintenance.

Playpens?

What play pen works best for chinchillas?

I want one that's large enough for me to sit in with him, but still roomy for him to run around. Of course it needs to be high enough too, so he won't feel like trying to jump it. I see some dog ones that look great, but I'm pretty sure the bar spacing it too wide.. And the critter ones I am finding seem really small, unless it's just the photos.

So suggestions?? Which one do you have? What works best for you and your chins? :))

Thanks!

Pregnant Chinchilla and Two Males

So we got our little girl aleeria 3 months ago and wanted to have some babies. She went into heat and mated with the younger male whom she bonded with. Keep in mind the two males we have were a "bonded" pair when they came into our home. After that happened the older male attacked the younger male and drew blood. They refused to get along. Would it be safe to re introduce the older male back into the larger cage with the pregnant female and mate?

Worried!! Missing Fur

Hello! one of my boys is missing a lot of hair by his hip/back. also, two ugly scabs the size of dimes. I immediately assume he was bored or depressed, picking his own fur to the point of bleeding. I gave him a huge dust bath, and slept on it. The only negative display is boredom, other than that happy and playful. Now I am worried after researching that he could have Ringworm, or some other type of contagious irritation. I haven't really been able to eliminate anything but fighting. Would a chinchilla gnaw/chew/self hurt to this point? Is this a case of ringworm? I don't know what to do!!

These pictures will reveal more than I can explain.

I'm designing an activity centre for my Chinchillas (as yet unborn :impatient:) to keep myself occupied while I wait  and I was wondering about using copper pipe with sisal/seagrass wrapped tightly round it.
Also I've seen raffia for Chinchilla's is this safe? If yes I was thinking of crocheting mats to sleep on and chew up :D (not one with holes! Don't want tiny paws getting caught).
:thanks: for all the help I've had to other questions

New to Chins-and-Hedgies

Hi there,
I'm new to this forum. I live in Canada and have had small animals my entire life. I currently have 4 Guinea Pigs, a foster rabbit and a chin.

I sometimes feel that they live a more lavish life style than I do.

I live in a smaller town surrounded with little to no small animal rescues or resources for these animals. I have tried to offer education and help to those in need.

I have recently been contacted to take on a hedgie. I don't currently have one, but have had hedgie a in the past. This little male and his sister are living in a 10 gallons aquarium. His sister for some reason is not in the picture anymore (not sure what happened to her). Anyway that s lady is not able to care for him anymore (financially and emotionally).

I can take him on, but does anyone ever feel that if they take in another pet, they start to neglect their others ?

He needs to be saved, but I don't want to become a dumping ground.

Any advise would help. Thanks a bunch

Question for those with Ferret Nation Cage

I just got a ferret nation cage and I'm going to replace the plastic trays with custom metal pans. I'm wondering how high I should ask for the sides to be. Of course the higher the better to reduce mess but I don't want them to be higher than they have to. I was thinking 5" but maybe thats overkill? Would 3" be high enough or still quite messy? Any input from those of you who have FN metal pans would be greatly appreciated!

Hello from Indiana

Hello, I'm Destiny. I live in Indiana with my husband and two young children as well as my best friend, Amanda, and her young daughter. A while back Amanda and I decided that we were going to get into Chinchillas and pretty much read every book out there and talked to several breeders in the area. All in all we have learned a lot very quickly because our breeder friends are VERY helpful. We have 8 chinchillas total at this time:

Females:
Nay Nay is a Black Velvet or Gunner Black and she is (I can't find her paperwork... lol) I believe 6 to 7 months old
Tink Tink is a Standard Grey and she is 6 months old
Blizz is a Pink White or Blond Beige and she is 5 months old
Aria is a Touch of Velvet (TOV) Mosaic and she is 4 months old
Primrose is our baby, she is a Mosaic and she is 3 1/2 months old she's so little she still makes the baby sounds at the other girls

Males:
Mr. Fuzby is an Extra Dark Ebony and he is 5 months old
Mogwai is a Homozygous Beige and he is 6 months old
Arthas is a GORGEOUS Mosaic and is 3 months old

We spent a lot of time picking out our fur-babies and finding babies that are close to the same age and have AWESOME personalities. Every single chinny that we have is so outgoing, shockingly so. And 7 out of 8 of them all get along beautifully and the one that doesn't like the others is undyingly affectionate to people. We have been working VERY hard to tame and train our chins and the work is really beginning to pay off. All of them know their names and come when they are called for free play time. We have also been working diligently on clicker training and they know several words such as "Home (go into cage after free play time), Out (Free play time), Treat, and Brave (getting picked up)" They are very smart chinchillas. Our entire family is chinchilla LOVERS.

~They're like chips and cookies you can't have just ONE~

Possibly Blind and Male Aggressive Behavior

Hello, I have two questions that I would like some help with. I am a chin mommy of 8 young chins and they are just lovely however there are two that I have some concerns about....

Ms. Blizz is a Pink White female that is 5 months old. She is wonderful but is acting very different than the other chinchillas. When we got her, she was kind of a last minute choice because we just love Chins so much and couldn't pass her up so we brought her home with another chin that we got. We put her in our smaller cage (two story with large ramps) with a few friends. She spent a lot of time either at the very top or at the very bottom but she was moving around the cage, when we moved her to the large female cage with everyone (6 levels and no ramps- everyone else jumps) she wound up spending 90% of her time at the bottom of the cage, only going to the second level to eat). I was worried that maybe she was sick so I moved her to a single "breeder" cage that we have (what she was in when we bought her) and she seemed to perk right up a whole lot. However, the more time I have spent with her the more I think she might be at least partially blind. When I put my hand in her cage it's like she doesn't see it but when I get near her face (brush like a whisker) she starts and lifts her head up like I startled her. When I give her a treat she does that too, almost like you have to bump her nose with the treat and she about gets your finger when she takes it where the others gently take it from my fingers. When I open the door she sits at the back of the cage, but I rustle her shavings in the front she bounds forward to the front edge, she startles easily when I touch her rear end to scoop her up but I say "It's just me" and she's starting to not get so upset now as long as I say it every time I touch her. Her eyes are clean and bright but I swear I don't think she can see. I tried moving toward her eyes with my finger and I could about put my finger on her eye (she didn't move, I just didn't do it). So I don't know... what do you guys think?

Next I have a young.... 4 month old Male Extra Dark Ebony, Mr. Fuzby... ALL of our chins get along... except him... lol. He is a holy terror to everyone else. We plan on raising these babies up to become breeders and I want to know is his brat behavior going to get better towards the girls? He chases them like a young boy on the playground and pulls their hair and they all start barking at each other. Is this normal behavior for a young buck? The other two boys we have get along great with the ladies. The boys only get to hang out (right now) with the girls during free run time with supervision. But Mr. Fuzby can't play with everyone cuz he's so rude and bratty. :hair:

baytril dosage

I had to take a chin to an emergency vet I've never seen before. I am always weary of other vets and he did say he's no chin expert. She was put on baytril 22.7 mg/ml. She is to take .32 cc twice a day. Does this sound right for a 746g chin?

Extra info:
They have her first dose as an injection at the vet asking with sub q fluids. He took her temp and after pulling the thermometer out she Hagan having discharge which he tested and found that it's likely pyometra. I chose to wait to get her spayed tomorrow or the next day so that my vet can do it.
I brought her because she didn't play yesterday and today she came out, went in her dust bath. Rolled 2-3 times and sat there for a while, making a movement as if she we struggling to poo. Then she went inside and continued the occasional movement. She did have a few droppings on the side there, but they were very small and not many. I'm not sure if she had eaten today, but I know she ate yesterday.

My chin made a strange new sound

Hey everyone, I'm new here as of tonight. I made an account in search of answers, because I am so worried about my rue bear (My chinchilla). So she is just under about 2 yrs old, has always been healthy, and we have a great relationship. I know the differences in her sounds (from barks to grunts to teeth chatters etc.), but tonight I heard a new sound. This sound is so unlike anything I have heard her make. It sounds like a deflated squeaky toy...like after a dog chewed it? For the record, it is not a bark. I have even googled / youtubed numerous videos of chinchilla sounds and noises trying to find a match. Are any of you familiar with the sound I am talking about? I'm worried she might be sick or in pain. I also am prone to overreacting. I just know that they are animals of prey, and she would only call out in such a way if she were very sick. I wish I had a better way to describe the sound. I have tried recording her, but she does not do it often and when she does it is without warning. It is shrill at first like a toy, and then deflated...also not as consistent in tone or length the way a bark is (it changes each time she makes the sound). Please help me :c

Bloat in Chinchillas

Hi,

I am worried about a new chinchilla I just got. I was wondering if she had bloat. Her stomach feels very hard, but she doesn't cry or whimper when I touch it. She is also eating well, pooping well and is still very active. I'm just worried that maybe the stomach could be the first sign. I feed them Oxbow, I switched from Carefresh about two weeks ago so that may be it? Any help would be great!

Thank you!

Meet Templeton

Meet my new little baby Templeton, also frequently referred to as spazz too hehe. I've had him for a week now and he is in no way nervous or scared, he just hops up onto my arm and is now going for the lap and various escape routes. Thank you for referring me to Sumiko, who is who I got him from.

(not sure why the thumbnail one is sideways but oh well)

Exercise Wheel and Cage Pans

Hello all!

Been a little while since I've been on here, but I'm glad to be back! Unfortunately, one of our chins passed away last year. :( We miss him very much. Currently, I have three boys in a Critter Nation two level cage, and one boy in a cage all his own. I've been in a financial rut for a while now as I am paying my way through nursing school, things are looking up a bit now and I am about to get a tax refund.

So, I would like to get my chinnys a few upgrades! I have been stuck with the crappy plastic wheels from PetsMart, and the three boys chew their's offf and break in less than a week. My other little guy does not chew his, and he uses it regularly. I am looking to get them a good wheel for each cage. I was thinking the Chin Spin? Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on wheels.

Also, in my critter nation cage, it still has the plastic liner pans. I hate having anything plastic around for them to chew. They have chewed the pans, and another huge problem is they are very hard to clean because of the texture and grooves. The urine becomes calcified and hard and leaves huge white/brown areas that I cannot get clean. Does anyone have any suggestion on what material would be a good replacement. My dad is great with wood working and welding, so I could get him to weld metal pans if needed. I just want something that isn't porous, won't hurt them if they chew it, and won't rust.

Sorry for the long post! Appreciate any advice!

Nursery for baby Chin?

Thanks to the great advice here from lovely, friendly, patient posters :thankyou:
I'm going to be a Mum to one Chinchilla :bliss:
I have the cage well on the way to being set up for my new arrival but......
Having read that babies don't know when to stop I'm concerned about my set up :confused3:
As my little one will have just left home should I limit the amount of space available until he/she has grown a bit? :hmm:
As in split off 1/2 the cage and make a nursery or will it be okay to just have everything available?

Is there an age when they can start dust baths? Do tinies need less depth of Chin sand?

Thanks for all your patience

Just woke up from a Dream!!

It was a chinchilla dream, so of course right away I thought of CnH and I have to share it with you all.

So I was outside (not sure where exactly) and there were wild (or abandoned) chins running around. I had a box of some sort and was running around trying to capture them. I remember a couple of times having to re-catch because they squirmed and slipped through my arms before I could contain them.

Anyway! I ended up with 3 chins. A black velvet, a standard and a white mosaic (it had panda-like markings! lol gray circles around the eyes and a gray bum). I sexed each of them, planning to keep a male as a friend for Eli & adopt out the rest. I remember thinking "wow, another girl, another girl". All 3 were female.

They were all so cute and got along with each other, so I decided to keep all 3 girlies and house them in their own separate cage. It was awesome!

Now that I am awake, I am a little sad that it's not true!! lol!!

Go ahead and share any chin-dreams of your own! :))

bag balm

Is this the bag balm I hear so much about on the forum? Those ingredients sound scary so, I just want to make sure I have the right one before I buy it. My chins feet are getting really dry. They seem to be bothering her alot tonight. I usually use Vaseline, but that's clearly not enough. Thank you!

Is every kind of coating on wire bad, or just lead?

Is it only lead that would be bad for chinchillas--or would any coating on the wire be bad?

1 chin or 2?

Ok, I was all set to get 2 because I know Chins live in extended groups and I think it wrong to keep any creature from it's own kind unless a) it's own kind are naturally solitary, b) the individual is a hermit, c) there is a good reason for this course of action.
In my research I've read that yes they do like company, no they are happy with a human, they can have company and then demand a divorce.
I'm just about to put my foot on the path of this long journey  I and my potential fur babies could really use some help ~ Please.
I'm out of my home at the longest 5.5 hrs every other Sat, 4.5 hrs Wed during term time. Other than that it's 2 hours Tues & Fri.
This very rarely changes as I'm disabled and unless the weather is dry I can't get out on my own. I can't put my waterproofs on alone without excruciating pain.
So my furry family have me home a lot of the time, and they have each other in terms of the cats.
So my question is, could/would this be enough for a Chinchilla? Or should I get 2?
I would only have a same sex pair because def no breeding :no:
and I don't want to risk neutering a male.
Thanks for reading

Chinchilla peace?

I've read that Chinchilla's should be housed so that they are part of the family, but also that they require peace and quiet for sleeping.
Before my kits come I want to resolve potential problems like this one.
I live alone(ish), I have visiting Support Workers but no children. I share my home with my 4 cats and my doorbell barks like a dog.
I don't play loud music or have tv/radio on loudly though one or other is background for most of my waking hours.
Would this be too noisy for a Chinchilla's sleep time? I could wheel the cage into my bedroom during the day, but am concerned that this would be disturbing having a change of environment.
Will the sound of the vacuum cleaner distress my Chin?
Thanks for reading

Newbie with lots of Q's :~)

Hi,
I found this amazing looking site when I was trying to find out if fleece is safe for Chinchillas.
I live in the UK and have researched as much as I can about Chins, one problem is the conflicting advice :banghead:
My plan is to have 2 Chinchilla as I know they live in large groups. I tried for rescue but none available :cry3:
I've bought this cage and wheel for them AVENTURA Tall ALL METAL CHEWPROOF Rat Ferret Chinchilla Degu Large Cage 1152http://r.ebay.com/ERbCSA
NEW All Metal Large 28cm Degu, Rat, Chinchilla Wheel FREE PP http://ift.tt/1TFmcfc
Would really appreciate feedback on both, though fingers crossed you don't tell me to ditch the cage :hair:
I'm about to set it up but would appreciate some advice on whether I'm on the right track with my ideas.
I plan to cover the ladders in tight fitting fleece covers to protect toes and legs when racing up and down.
I have organic Hyacinth and Sisal mat and a Seagrass mat for the shelves.
Substrate for other floors I'm thinking of this 10kg Single Bale Fitch Paper Bedding For Smaller Critters
I do pottery at Adult Ed and plan to make them a "mountain range" to go on the base of the cage.
It would look like half coconut shells (though bigger, to accommodate an adult Chinchilla or 2.) most turned so that opening is on base.
There would be entrance (sometimes exit as well) and ventilation holes right across the top.
Some shells would be placed so that they are like bowls.
Shells joined together, including piled on top of each other but leaving nooks and crannies.
All glazed in Human safe glaze that can go in microwave/dishwasher.
I'd hide some of their food in different nooks and crannies, maybe even have special slits in roof of caves to put some food and hay tufts.
I want to enrich their play environment as though they were in the wild as far as possible.
I've some beautifully shaped large stones that my late SO and I collected in England and Scotland and I wondered about using these too or instead off?
I am planning on making their houses in pottery class too, I thought 1 each plus one big enough to share. Again ventilation holes all around. These would be secured in several places to the cage bars to prevent being hurled to the floor.
I have a variety of safe balls, small shapes that can be safely thrown around. Safe wood disks, logs and sticks of varying thickness in a variety of woods.
Fish bowl for dust bath which would be in playpen area to encourage return to cage.
Wooden parrot toys of safe wood with bells (checked regularly for safety). No ladders or swings don't want to risk toes or falls.
Thick knotted cotton rope dog chew toys as bridges with fleece hammocks below in case of falls.
Playpen area I've proofed my living room and have folded up metal dog crate covered with very thick cardboard to limit some areas.
10 mins before end of time would put fish bowls in a children's inflatable paddling pool (fleece on base). This would contain sand and start limiting their area of freedom ready for transition to cage and supper.
Food wise I'm thinking pre mixed Chinchilla pellets and mixture of hay until 1 year old and then over 3 months introduce:~
Rolled barley with dried raspberry 1/4 tsp 1x1 a week (this cleans rodents blood, prevents kidney problems and strengthens/stimulates digestive tract & boosts immune system)
Lucerne linseed pellets 1x2 a week (good for fur and high fibre.)
Beetroot pellets 1x1 a week (improves colon activity).
Herbal nuggets Alfalfa with linseed binding, wheat, mint, rosemary and oregano. As a treat if other food eaten
Degu Dazzle beetroot chips, carrot flake, tomato flake and seeds, leek flake, milk thistle seeds, buckwheat, astragalus root, flat peas, millet heads,
organic toasted flakes, norfolk oats and barley. 1/4 teaspoon every other day.
Carousel Mix butternut bark, liquorice root, lemongrass, yellow peppers, uva ursi leaves,
meadowsweet, luci chop, nettle root, nettle leaves, fennel seeds, hemp seeds, organic jumbo oats 1x a week.
Dried Hibiscus flower good for blood pressure and calms the nerves. This is part of my medicine cabinet if there has been stress.(works for people too)
Purple Marshmallow flowers, loved by small furries and great for tummy problems (works for people too)
Whoops, sorry it's such a long post, I just really want to be sure everything is as perfect as possible before the kits are even booked.
I believe doing it this way I can hopefully iron out issues before they are a problem. Many thanks for reading this.
Not relevant to their welfare but little ones will have names from Native language spoken in Peru, as near as possible to time of the Inca.

Hello! i need help!

:bump1:
i want a hedgehog and my mom says theyre like mice so no. i do good grades and am twelve, how can i get one?

Hi from Kent UK

Hi, Just found this site :~)
I live in Rainham, Kent and share my home with my DID/MPD community,
3 aged 3 Ragdoll/Siamese X siblings, 1 aged 2 Red
Tabby, 1x 10 week old hamster.
I have been researching for a couple of months to decide whether or not I was the right person for two Chinchillas.
Over the years I've hand reared (sometimes from birth/hatching) Dogs, Cats, Rats, Rabbits (wild and tame), Sparrow, Jay, Magpie, Barn owls, Harris Hawk, European Eagle Owl, Hedgehog, Mice, Shrews, Voles also sharing my home with Hamsters, Goats, Chickens, Ducks.
I've sadly had the odd loss but most times we came through the battle of life together.
I've also raised 9 children though sadly never carried my own past 6 months.
I was widowed 8 years ago in April, and moved 3 years ago from my fantastic (but impractical for my health) 3 bed home with enormous garden to my current 1 bed flat with pocket handkerchief garden.
Now I'm increasingly housebound due to severe disability I pondered as to whether I could be a suitable candidate for these gorgeous fluff balls.
Having read as much as possible and trying to weed out out conflicting comments :banghead:
I'm delighted to report that I think I'm ok for this new undertaking so my cage is built (the largest I can fit in), a room is proofed until I discover what I missed :~)
Preparations have been made with the people who will take on my cats in the event of serious illness or worse and yes, they know about Chinchilla, one lady has 8.
So now I await a litter to be born :~) and I'm hoping to get  or down :cry3: on what I have planned so that my kits get off to a fantastic start.
Looking forward to making new friends who care about furries and getting help for my journey into Chinchilla single parenting :hmm:

New to this Site and saying hey :)

Hello everyone and want to say hey and so glad to find other chin lovers out there! Nice to meet all of you.

Oats

So a few times a week I give Elsa oats as a treat for letting me put bag balm on her ears or to try and teach her how to use her wheel (never very many though). Anyway we did have a container of old fashioned oats and those seem to have been replaced with whole grain quick oats. I asked my mom about this and she said the quick ones would be fine since they're whole grain, but I'm fairly sure I've always read to only feed them old fashioned oats and never the quick ones. Am I remembering this right?

Cost of Owning Chinchilla(s)

Hello Everyone!
I am new to the Chins n’ Hedgies website, but I have owned chinchillas for many years and used this website for a number of years without joining. I apologize if I post this in the wrong section, but I figure this would be most beneficial for soon-to-be or new owners of chinchillas. I noticed that there was a lack of information on how much it costs to own a chinchilla, which I believe may be helpful for those that are thinking about becoming chin parents. I have written up the figures of how much it cost me (startup cost and yearly cost). I had two chinchillas up until three months ago, but unfortunately I had to rehome one due to him attacking the other. I tried to keep him, but he was starting to make the victim chinchilla starve to death. I had no other safe place for him in my home, so I had no other choice but to rehome him. I will be adding my costs as if I had two and then provide a separate figure chart for just one. I do want to note that I tend to shop at DrsFoster&Smith.com and my local pet store rather than PetSmart and Petco.
The prices of items may be increased or decreased depending upon where you live.
I have provided links for everything I have listed to the best of my ability while finding the lowest prices for items. I hope that this will help future chin parents in helping them make the decision to care for one of these cute balls of fluff!
