Chin poop

I noticed during the day my chin’s poop was different shapes and was a little mushy, but a couple of hours later it looked normal again. My chin has been eating and running around, she looks overall healthy. Her stomach isn’t tight, but she did do some stretches, maybe she felt discomfort? I recently took her to the vet around 3 weeks ago because she was actually sick, then I got her back on Monday fully healthy. Should I be worried again?

Puppies & Chinchillas

Hello fellow floof-lovers!

We have recently considered adding to our fur family and adopting a puppy-- looking at a mini schnauzer or schnoodle to begin with. I am nervous about the prey drive of schnauzers. Though, we have read that early introductions during the puppy socialization period (7-16 weeks) can help keep them learn that other animals are to be respected.

My chinchilla is nearly three years old and has only shared the home with his Betta friend. I have had him since he was a...

hair ring

my boy mochi might have a hair ring. i was able to calmly get him by his scruff in order to turn him over and there isn’t a ring but there is something that looks like a flat “clump” on his private parts. it’s so flat i can’t tell if it’s like a mark on it or if it’s fur. i wasn’t able to get it off but i’m planning on calling the vet tomorrow. any advice beforehand?

Chinchilla baby getting neglected-Help!

About a week ago my chinchilla gave birth to three adorable babies and since I have been tracking their weight (and their mom's). Two of them have been steadily gainning, but one of them isn't gaining much. I am nervous that he is getting neglected and I am not sure what I should do. Here is my tracker of their weight: Chinchilla Weight Tracker

my new chin Mochi is about 6 months - 1 year. i assume he’s around 9 months. i noticed recently that he keeps sitting on his hind legs in order to pay extra attention to his private parts. should i be worried? he also frequently humps my arm which i’m told is normal.

Help please

I’ve only had Gizmo for 5 days. He is 6 mos. old and I already messed up as his new mommy.
yesterday I’d let him out for play time and he was running around playing and I stepped out of the room to go to the restroom and came back and he was gone! I couldn’t find him anywhere. I was scared so I called my daughter to come help me find him. We did find him and we were trying to catch him and he just was running right between my feet and I couldn’t catch him. Then she trapped him in a hideout...

Renovation Noise

I have an opportunity to get part of my house renovation done early with me being able to stay in the house. It was originally planned to take place a month ago, but got stopped because of the virus. The rest of the renovations will be done in June. These early renovations will be the kitchen, specifically the floors and counters. The majority of the noise will be done in around two days, with most of the noise lasting around eight hours per day. For the first day, cupboards will be ripped...

Baby Chin Difficulties

Hey there! I'm not a new chin owner, but my baby chin is exhibiting behavior that I am unfamiliar with. I have a 4 month old male chinchilla (he lives by himself). I have had him for two months now, but he has not had a grand outing outside his cage yet. The problem is, his cage sits on a little table, so he can't just hop out at his leisure. I tried to coax him out with just my arms, but all he is interested in is humping my arms :)ROFLMAO:). Lastly, I have tried lifting him out of the...

Treats/toys/herbs???

So just a little curious about the treats and snack and toys/chews???? What all is the difference? It’s so hard to do research since everywhere is so different and recommends the complete opposite.

I’ve really laid off on the treats for sheldon since I got taco because of recommendations from the rescue.

Originally I was feeding sheldon dried fruits, fruit cubes, rice puffs, dandelion drops, sweet potatoe sticks(once but it gave him the runs so never again), small bags with like oats dried...

Liners?

So I just read in another post that fleece are considered the only safe fabric for chins?

Sheldon is trained with a litter box since he shredded any type of fabric he sees.

tacos cage however I custom made some “liners” for him recommended by the rescue I got him from. They had his cage lined the same way and said that it would be best since that’s familiar to him.

The liners I made for him are 2 pieces of fabric. Flannel on top and bottom layer a towel. The flannel is face up so he...

Male Aggressive Toward Female or Urge to Mate?

Hello,
I have a male and female chinchilla, which I recently tried introducing to each other. The first time, they were placed in a neutral territory and they were seemingly afraid to approach each other. In that event, they simply avoided and ran past each other.

The second time around they sniffed each others noses, but it seemed like they were sniffing hard and the male made a hiccuping noise, but I feel as if it was aggressive. Maybe he was just eager to have a female to...

New member looking for pet chinchilla

Hi, we are looking for a new pet and have decided on a chinchilla. Is there a rescue facility between West Palm Beach and Jacksonville, FL?

Meet Eros!

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot. I didn’t want to put this in “New Owner Questions” since I’m not a new owner, I just wanted to take moment to have you guys meet my new chinnie! I know that a couple of months ago my boyfriend and I discussed a new chinchilla it and he didn’t think it was a good time at first since we would be potentially moving in together, but he seemed to make an exception for this little one. We probably won’t even be moving for about a year or two because of...

i got a new chinchilla named Mochi about 3 weeks ago. the place i got him at said he was about 6 months to 1 year. at first he was really skittish but only for a few days. he already lets me scratch his chin and under his ears BUT he is so persistent! he does not take any firm “no’s”, light “pushing” to try and sweep out his cage, or blowing which someone on this site suggested. if i do any of those, he stops for .3 seconds and keeps going. he’s also CRAZY about humping my arm. he’s got lots...

Critical Care Force Feeding- Tips, Suggestions?

Hello! I have been perusing for a couple months here. I haven't gotten to introduce myself. I wasn't sure if I should post this in new owners or emergencies. If I need to move it let me know! I am upset, distraught and looking for some good vibes and advice! Everything I've read confirms that force feeding is miserable for all parties and you just have to have perseverance. Is there anything I can do to make this process easier for any or all parties, such as mixing something with the...

Update on Astrid

We went to the doctor. She is hypothermic and the fur below her chin is kinda wet. She doesn't seem to have something in her lungs the doc said but he said that her bowel movement is slow so perhaps she is constipated.
We are giving her oil and antibiotics. I am giving her water with a syringe cause she is not moving and she is wrapped up in blanket to keep her warm.. The normal temperature the doc said is 36-37 and she was at 33 Celsius.
I hope the antibiotics work... Sighs

My chin has been catatonic.... I opened her cage to let her out and she is just sitting /sleeping. She is not her usual energized self.

Chinchilla Grieving

So I have two chinchillas Peanut and Snowball they both have opposite personalities. Peanut is more energetic and the dominant one where as Snowball is shy and calm. Today, Peanut sadly passed away from a GI infection and I miss him very much. Peanut and Snowball were cage mates and were cuddle with each other and play with each other. Snowball was bullied when he was younger by his sibling and peanut helped him. I told Snowball that peanut has passed away he seems fine but I do think he...

Chin making loud sound

Hi everyone,

My boy Kumo is a VERY chatty ~10 yo chinchilla. Over the years I've gotten pretty familiar with most of the noises he makes and what they mean (you know...happy grunts during playtime, angry kacks when he sees the carrier because he hates the vet, warning calls to warn all the animals at the vet that the vet is awful...). He's a very communicative little guy.

However, he's been making a new noise that makes me jump to check on him every time he makes it. It's a loud...

New Chinchilla - Help

Hi there,

This if my first post, so bear with me and be kind. ♥ I bought a chinchilla from another lady, who had him from a ten week old kit, to the age of 10 months old. I bought him from her about two months ago.

He is unbelievably skittish... He'll come sit on my knee, and then all of a sudden (for no reason) scurry under the cage like the devil is chasing him. And he does this often. All his play times are full of this panic, and at no apparent thing. He'll freak out, bolt under the...

Baytril - How to give via Subq - Not Orally?

My chin unfortunately seems to potentially be having another issue with an abcess. After bringing her to the vet they recommended that I start a course of Baytril/Enrolfloxacin. I have read and heard about supplementing with Acidophilus which I will pick up tomorrow when stores are open again.

But I was wondering, I have heard of some folks that inject the Baytril into their chin and I was wondering how do you do this?

Where do you inject? What gauge needle and how large a syringe?

Odd Chin Eating Habit

One of my chins eats her Oxbow pellets very oddly. She holds her pellet and nibbles it down to where she is holding onto the remaining portion of the pellet. She then sniffs it and tosses that portion on the floor of the cage!!! Is this weird, eccentric, just plain OCD-like or is she just a damned picky eater?? LOL I have not observed my other chin eating pellets in the same manner.

Chinchilla food crumbling

I'm a new chinchilla owner and I'm wondering if my chinchilla is ok. I've had him for about 4-5 days and the first 2 days he was eating his pellets just fine, then I just noticed yesterday that his pellets were being crumbled. He isn't discharging from his eyes or nose and is acting quite usual (either than the fact that he is crumbling his food). can someone tell me if this is normal?

Male chin rehome in Wisconsin

I adopted this chinchilla from a coworker. He had a buddy but he died before I adopted him. He has been to 4 other homes so his age is unknown. He has been mistreated by children in previous homes so please no small kids. When I first recieved him he did bite but with patience he no longer bites and is quite friendly. Unfortunately, I have developed a severe allergy to his shedding fur and need a new home for him asap. A home with another chinchilla buddy would also be very preferred. He...

Warning Behaviour?

I have two male chinchillas (10 months and 14 months) neither are neutered and they are a bonded pair (rescued). Recently the 10 month old has started trying to mount the 14 month old (who isnt all too pleased about it, as you can imagine). It started as a little thing but has progressively gotten more feisty. Is this just adolescent behaviour, trying to assert dominance or could it be an early warning sign that they may start fighting?

This mainly happens during playtime- in their cage...

Moving to Chins into the same cage!

I am adopting these two chinchillas next month that needed to be rehomed. They're currently living side-by-side and separate cages, and I believe they have been for a while now. Chinchilla - Bulging/Protruding eye?

Our chinchilla recently went through a medical issue back in Jan-Feb 2020 (I noted the thread here for the history: Chinchilla bald patch above eye?). The vet basically found an abcess above her right eye, and we had to drain it and treat it with a topical antibiotic for a while.

Chinchilla bald patch above eye?

Hi all

My chinchilla was born in 2013 June (so about 7 years young).

Recently we noticed her right eye, the fur around it seemed "poofy", like she messed it up.

Today when we were playing with her, we noticed that same eye seems to have developed a bald patch? This developed over the past month or two. Does anyone know what might be the cause?

Her diet consists of oxbox pellets, water, lots of hay and the odd oxbow treat. This is the same diet she's had since we first got her.

Should I Put The Wheel Back?

So, some background. My two chins have had their ChinSpin removed for around 1 1/2-2 months. This is because one of them (Buttons) had a foot injury, which worsened with the wheel, so I took it out, but then a few weeks after the other chin (Bandit) had a foot injury so the wheel had to stay out. When Bandit was starting to heal, turns out Buttons' injury was an abscess on his heel, so again, no wheel. Surgery day arrives, the abscess healed by itself, however the vet advised to keep the...

Chin keeps opening wound

TLDR: Can I use a liquid bandage for a wound, and if so, what brands do you recommend?
Hi, I have a 6 yr old female chinchilla who recently chewed on her leg, making a pretty big wound. I was successful in healing that particular wound, as her natural skin has basically grown over it.
However, she now reopened another old wound, basically ripping the top layer of the skin off. She keeps chewing on it, and I can’t watch her 24/7. I was wondering if it would be safe to use a pet-friendly...

Free Chinchilla near Annapolis MD

Large shaft

Hi. One of my chinchillas is having unusually (at least I think its unusually) large shaft. I can't really recall if he has been always like that, I just started paying attention to it lately. Compared to my other chin, the shaft is noticeable bigger and it somehow "hangs down", when the chin is walking he almost always touches the ground with it.

We went to our exotic pet vet which we know is very experienced with chinchillas, he examined the penis for hair rings and any worrying sings...

Pregnant Chin

Last November (ish), I got a male chinchilla, Wolke, for my female, Annie. I put them together in hopes of them breeding and having kits. Now I did do excessive research and every once in a while I do more. I realize it wasn't very smart for me to breed them since I do not know their genetic history, or whatever you'd call it, but it's a bit late for that now. I put them together not too long after and they got along just fine. Annie has gained some weight and I'm super excited and...

I've had chinchillas for three years now, which doesn't feel like long. I've done a lot of research on them and I noticed they need to get regular exercise. Though I try, I've found it hard to make sure this happens. I don't feel like I have the time to spend with them. Hello looking for some help/advice. Recently one of my Chins had a problem with one of his eyes by keeping it closed and slight discharge around it. Preparing wood question

So I was wondering if it is ok to prepare wood from a safe tree using branches that have fallen on the ground? I have a tall sycamore tree that is way too tall for me to snip branches but they fall on the ground. Is it ok to use those branches as long as I clean them correctly? Or do they need to be snipped of the tree right there and then to use them for my chinchilla?

Questions Regarding Chin Feet

My chin Buttons has recently had an abscess on his foot that healed by itself. Since the healing (around a month ago), the cage has been padded with fleece liners with quilt batting sewn inside. The padding doesn't cover everything, just the two floors and a half shelf leading up to the second floor. He has some redness where the abscess used to be, but after consulting the vet she said that the best way to deal with it would be to continue the padding at least in the areas where he spends...

Chinchilla Breeders/Rescues

Hello, I am currently looking to adopt a chinchilla. I know a couple pet stores around that either have them or can get them in. But I know that its better to adopt or get from a reputable breeder. I live in Western Illinois. Thank you.

Hay quality

So I've been buying hay from rabbitholehay.com and it's good hay that my chin loves. But I recently ordered a batch of 2nd cut timothy hay and it came looking very much like 3rd cut. :/ I contacted customer service and they said sometimes a batch of 2nd cut can be more like that. My chin, Mr. B, loooooves 3rd cut, he'll eat the stems too which he normally avoids in 2nd cut because he's picky!

So the upside is he is gobbling up this "2nd cut timothy"...

They are so amazing and full of energy and life and it’s breaking my heart that I am looking for a safe and knowledgeable home for them to go to. My husband and I now have an 8 month old son and have been I feel we’ve been unable to provide them with the exercise and attention they need. They’re able to run around together outside their home and play together but have not been able to stay together...

Getting a second chinchilla??

Hi I have had my chinchilla for a year now and have been dreaming about getting a second. However, Roo is a rescue and lived alone in a garage for most of her life. I dont know how old she is and I dont think she has lived with another chin before. Is there something I could look for in her behavior to know how she would respond to another chin? She is pretty social and gets along with our dogs (seriously the dogs will sleep at the foot of the cage and Roo will come down and sleep at the...

Ear injury

I have two chins. A while back my one chinny got a little nick on his ear and there was dry blood after some time it went away. Now I noticed my other chin has the same thing. Should I bother to clean it? Or put some petroleum jelly on it? My chin isn’t acting any different. Suggestions please

Chinchilla conjunctivitis

I have 2 chinns and I recently took one to the vet for her eye leaking this white gunk. She had caught conjunctivitis. No idea how vet said it could be a number of things. So I got the medication and she did really well, better than expected she does not like to be manhandled at all unless she chooses you too. The vet suggested I clean the cage more often that maybe something was bothering her eyes, and she may have an allergy. I know when I first got her they recommended wood shavings for...

Am I crazy!

My vet put my chin on TMP-SMZ for an ear infection. After two days he looks like someone who is sick to their stomach. He is sleeping more and just looks like he is sick. I took him off, called the vet and she told me these are not symptoms of a reaction to an antibiotic. She also told me he has been on this before. That's when I remembered he had the same reaction to this back in 2016. I couldn't remember which vet prescribed the antibiotic that didn't agree with Hershey. We take him to...

More Space?

When I got my chin 2 months ago, I got him from a breeder. I had gotten another chin from this same breeder before, who suddenly passed very quickly after I got him. Well, when I got both of them, I told her I had purchased a critter nation for him to live in. She told me to only let him live in one part of it (I have a two level) until he is 1 years old (he is about 7 months now). He is tamed and comfortable now, but he seems to be going crazy in the top portion, and I feel he would...
