A whole herd sale on craigslist?

I haven't gotten into showing or anything and don't know the reputation of these breeders, but Detroit chinchillas from Inkster Mi (Near Detroit) seems to be selling out. I figure most of you who would want and are able to take on the herd have probably heard through show contacts, but I figured I'd post just in case.

http://ift.tt/1ox90qj

It seems odd I hear about it on craigslist before here when I've been looking for chin recently, they at least aren't listed as a member of MCBA (although I have come across their fb page in my search before- I kinda thought they were a big back yard breeder from my impression) Again, I have no dealings with them and I'm not in the showing community- Im not trying to say anything bad- I really don't know anything about them.

So I found new things for my wish list

I've got a few new things I wish I had money to spend on. Since you guys can be more understanding of throwing money at chin stuff than other people, I figured Id share some ideas.

http://ift.tt/1qToDrT this website is pricey as all get out, but has some HUGE cages. Any downsides besides cleaning to give an adult chin a 6x6x6 foot cage? as long as there's plenty of stuff where they wont fall?

Also, my next chin purchase is probably going to be this (or a few of them)

http://ift.tt/1qToDrX

It's not meant for chins, but it's clay and other people use clay pots for hay- I think it would be a nifty house, but it'd be a outside the cage or bottom level thing so Yuki couldn't push it off, break it, and hurt himself. I don't see any other reason it wouldn't be good, but please let me know if you see something I don't.

Hi

Hi, there.

My family had pet chinchillas while I was growing up, and I think that I know enough about them. Somebody told me to look into this forum to learn more about chins before getting one of my own. So, I joined.

The chins that I grew up with were brown with freckles and white with blueish eyes. My mom also had black ones at some point. I miss looking at them. They are so funny and cute. Looking into getting one of those colors.

first 2014 kit! =D

I had my standard female separated for the last two months and was beginning to despair that she did not in fact get pregnant.

JLO D1 was born this morning! Mom's protective so I've let them be. Pure white tail, woot! From my first place std and 1st place white.

Aww it won't let me attach pics, I'll try at the library tonight!

Chins not breeding

Hi everyone. About a week ago, I rescued a male and female chinchilla. They are approximately 2 years old. The previous owner said they never had a litter of kits. They are not neutered or spayed. The cage they were in was very small, so I moved them to a much bigger cage. However, they no longer sleep together.

They were kept in a dark and dingy basement. They are do take treats from my hand however they are a little shy. But that is to be expected.

Here are my questions.

1) why have they never produced a litter of kits

2) why are they no sleeping together anymore

ChinsNstuff

I have made a website http://ift.tt/1nFxu67.

It is not finished yet, but I have finished my shop portion so I can start taking orders!

You can either message me here(which I check frequently) or check the site for contact information.

I can make pine ledges of all sizes.

They come sanded and with hardware.

I will be adding things(such as hanging toys, fleece items, etc...) over time, but for now I am starting out with ledges.

Adopted a chin! First time mom

Hello everybody :) I have been lurking for the past few weeks and thought it was about time to introduce myself and my new friend, Roo! I love animals and have grown up caring for many different animals, but this is my first chinchilla. I never knew how adorably funny and smart they are until recently!

A few weeks ago I adopted Roo. Roo is a one year old standard gray male Chinchilla. I adopted him from a friend that is renting a room in my boyfriends house. He wanted me to have him because he wasn't able to give him the attention and care he needed (My friend actually took him in from someone else who traveled too much to care for him anymore).

It was pretty sad. I didn't even notice shabby little the cage in the dark corner of our basement until 3 days after he moved in. Somehow no one told me there was a chinchilla in the house. My boyfriend even forgot his friend had one!

Immediately, I gushed over the cuteness! Then I hit up google for information on Chinchillas which is how I found this site (and a TON of helpful information, thank you all!). I spent the next few days by his cage getting to know him and very soon after that I bought the materials needed to make a cardboard playpen to block off part of the room so he could run around safely. I use velcro strips to attach it to the wall and it folds up when not in use. I think we were both overfilled with joy when I let him out to play! This was my first experience witnessing a super happy chinchilla bouncing everywhere.

Biggest problem still was his cage. It was not the best for him - rusted in the pee spots, and it was nearly impossible to clean the bottom. I didn't know how to tell my friend that he needed to buy a new cage for his chinchilla, so I asked politely if he was wiling to give him up for adoption. My friend was actually happy that he found a better owner for Roo since he didn't have much time for him either- and even considered giving him up before moving.

I am in love! This little guy has stolen my heart and... my wallet, haha. He is a super sweet little guy and quite social too. After 3 weeks we have already bonded :)

Right now I am a little sad though because I am visiting my parents that live 6 hours away and he is back home. I feel like a worried new mother! I know those boys back home aren't going to be as diligent with cleaning.

Below are some pictures of him, his old cage, and his new cage. So far he is not chewing the plastic critter nation pans, but I have ordered the stainless steel Bass pans anyway! For bedding I use kiln dried Aspen and he does a good job of not kicking it around everywhere. The basement floor is cream and has brown flecks in it that camouflage any poopoos >.< which can be a pain getting them all after playtime and in pictures it looks like poo everywhere lol.

If you got this far, thanks for reading! I look forward to meeting more of you and reading about your chinchillas as well as learning more about mine! <3

Could a chinchilla develop diabetes?

I adopted one of my chinchillas a couple of years ago from a woman who fed him more treats than pellets. I changed his pellets (mazuri) and he got on fine, but recently I've noticed that he urinates SO much and he is the only one of my chinchillas who doesn't just pick one spot, so it's everywhere in his cage. He also eats and drinks more than the rest. I do not feed them anything with sugar. Their treats are wood chews. Has anyone experienced this?

My New Little Lady

Patryk and I had gone to my sister-in-laws PetSmart and they had one Chinny for sale. We had gotten a good look at her and she had been there for a year! She is so beautiful I had wondered why, so we asked to see her. The guy was saying how she is a biter and doesn't like people, so I was uneasy but Patryk was fine. Patryk had put his hand in her cage palm up and close to the ground and she walked around it sniffing and eventually jumped into his hand and his arms. She was not a happy chinny because no one let her out and if she did come out it was once a month, and Patryk was in love so now we have two wonderful chins.

Poor quality hay this summer/fall?

I was doing my research on purchasing more hay but I find complaints on the quality of hay within recent months. For example, American Pet Diner, which used to be my chins favorite, has recently changed their package. In the new package, the hay seems to be shredded, with lots of dust and brown pieces. I also checked for Oxbow timothy hay and the reviews are also bad.

What's going on with hay harvested this year? Has anybody bought hay recently? How is the quality? I really concerned about my picky eaters...

Wanted: homemade wheel

New to the forum and was hoping that someone either had a metal wheel for sale or could point me in the direction of someone who makes them. My chinchillas broke their plastic one a few days ago. I'd like to stay in the $30-40 range. Thanks!

Chins cough

My chin (fushi) started to cough every 2-3 min.. (my other chin started to cough as well but much more rarely) now from a phone call with the vet he seem not that worried and says i can come in 2 days and to give them 2-3 drop of cough syrup... i never heard of anyone giving that for chins so i would like to ask you guyz.

also they have no runny nose no wettnes from the eyes or ears and such, they do seem to eat a bit less and he gone down weight (6 grams... not much but still).

Help with mix food contents

So my little beast of burden came with a brand new bag of the food pictured. I have done my research here to find out what is safe chin food and what is not. Needless to say I am picking out all of the fruits and veggies, but I can't identify some of the things in the mix

In the last pic the things in the bowl are obvious no gos. The rose hips and flowers are pretty easy to identify but I do not know what the other things pictured are.

Can you guys identify the mystery items?

Thanks in advance for your help. You guys have been invaluable.

Dust build up in the ears?

Is there such a thing as too much dust build up in chin ears? The amount in her ears seems to be more noticeable when it was not the first few weeks I had her.

Sprocket gets a dust bath every other day or every third day depending on how much I handle her. Last night she got one because she peed in her carrier while I cleaned her cage :/ I have only seen her pee outside her cage once the first time she had playa time here. But I guess that is beside the point lol

Should I be concerned about ear dust?

Introducing A Female Chinchilla to My Current Female One

I just have some question on how I should go along with introducing two female chinchillas around the same age. I've read different stories and visited different websites, but I think getting different options from people who have been successful with introducing chinchillas would be nice to have, especially in one place where I can look.

I am getting another female chinchilla tomorrow who is white. Approximately one year old.

I currently have a standard grey female chinchilla who is a little over a year. She is very friendly and will come over to you and let you pet her. She has a large cage with multiple levels. When I first had her she had a smaller cage, so as long as I put new bedding in there I figured I could put the white chinchilla I plan on getting tomorrow in there.

I know introducing can be very lengthy and take a lot of time, and I might not even get the results I want, but I am willing to spend time and make sure they get proper care. I have plenty of time to spend with them day and night.

So if people could please share their experience it would be extremely helpful. Please provide detail, advice, and questions for me!

Want to get another chin

Hello!

I am new to owning a chinchilla and I have some questions. I recently bought a chinchilla and now I want another one. But the other one I want to buy was in the cage with the one I already bought. I just need to know is it safe to buy her. Because at the time when I bought my first one they seemed fine together but I just want to make sure!

Surprise baby kit!!!

I bought my 6 month old female Daisy at the end of August from a breeder, everything has been perfect but i come home from work today to the shock that she has given birth!! (She was in the cage alone, I'm assuming the breeder didn't know as he didn't tell me.

We're perfectly fine about caring for them but is there anything I should know?? Kind of in shock right now i'm not sure what to do.

Bark Control?

I have 4 chihuahuas and my parents/little brother have a yorkie/chihuahua mix. They tend to bark for no reason and I was hoping to stop it. Barking some is fine, they are dogs and are going to bark. Barking outside is no big deal...bark all day long outside if they want. It's the days that they seem to bark non stop while inside for no reason that drives me nuts.

Since there is 5 of them, I'd like one device to help control them all from barking so much inside, rather than getting each one a collar. Also, don't want anything that shocks, zaps, or whatever.

I've seen these items online, but wasn't sure how well they worked.

Seems kind of cheap, which makes me weary.

Hand-held (might be easier to start with, but have to keep it with you at all times)

If anyone has any experience with it, please let me know what you used to control it. Or used one of the things listed above or another product?

Quads again

I'm not a fan of quads. And I believe this is the third set born here. Liv gave birth to four girls. Two standards and two mosaics. By day two they were fighting and determined to kill one another. I started hand feeding them. And had to rotate two in and two out from that time forward. They are 31 days old now and drinking out of milk bottles hung on the cage. They eat my dry supplement along with hay and pellets. This group has made me consider wanting to get out of chins. I have had to raise 6 by hand in the last year. It takes too much time away from my family.

The thing that amazes me about this birth, is the fact Liv was a quad as well. She is a first time mom. This birth took her five hours. I was on the edge of my seat. Liv was exhausted when the last was born. Had to swing the kit to get rid of fluid and warm her up. One of the standards was small and could not drink out of a syringe without bubbling. I was sure this one would have perished. Took great skill to only set a drop at a time on the lips and hope she didn't aspirated.

New owner

Hi, just wanted to introduce myself and the Chins! I just got Mama Lily Chin Potter. Baby Santana Chin. And Baby Rose Chin. I don't know what colors they are... I am thinking a light ebony or dark standard gray? And is it normal that one is really shy and hides on the top floor while the others come running when they see me? I got them from a family who "loved" them and didnt want to see them go. They fed them Kaytee fiesta food with 5 apple slices and 5 baby carrots twice a day and hay as a treat. Pssh to say they are going on a Mazuri, Oxford and Timothy hay diet is an understatement. They also gave them water in a bowl. But I'm use to rescue animals in need. Any comments and help would be greatly appreciated from me and these little girls. When I figure out how to get images on here from my phone I'll post pics.

Help with Meds/Feeding

Chia is sick and has seen a vet, who kept her over night. She's back in my care now, but I have to give her 2 kinds of meds and she's still not eating enough for my liking (but she is eating!)

I'm having a lot of trouble forcing her to eat and take meds. She's insanely stubborn when it comes to being handled. She HATES it. I tried to get her into a burrito wrap yesterday and it was impossible, I thought she broke her leg just from desperately trying to get away from me. (She didn't, her leg is fine, she just twisted weird.)

She'll eat small amounts of CC on her own, but I need a way to get meds into her, especially in the morning. She'll take the Metacam easily, but I was also given Trim/Sulfa and she was having NONE of it. She doesn't want it no matter what I do...

Help!!

Chin that apparently got wet? On Chicago Craigslist

Sand Bath Houses

Would think after all these years i wouldn't need to ask any questions about this'

Actually just looking for a suggestion on a new house.

All of my chins have used this kind since i got them or they were born.

I always gave them there bath in there cage. But im looking to change that so there cage and there wood doesn't get as coated with sand. So i was going to let them out into there chin room to give them a dust bath. But for now there are more keen on running around and exploring then getting a dust bath. So i ordered a small playpen type thing. Going to try to enclose them in the room in a smaller area so they can concentrate on taking a sand bath.

Trouble is the two houses i have are designed to hang on the cage bars. They have little hooks on the end. Mine came off long ago. But inside the cage they don't care. I just set it down and they go crazy with it. Outside the cage they are not as comfortable yet. The middle of the bottom is that circle shape. It sticks down just a bit lower then the stand part on the front and back. So when they roll around the house goes side to side and makes noise; scaring the heck out of them.

They first time i tried it i stayed with them and held the house to keep it still. But i have sever non allergic rhinitis. That dust doesn't help. I usually give them there dust bath and leave the room while they use it.

Once/if i determine the playpen is safe and trust leaving them to bath for a few minutes, i will actually need a dust house that they will use and not scare the heck out of them.

Suggestions?

Best Chin Cages

I've had my chins about a month now and I finally got a job so I am hoping to start saving up for a nice, new cage for them. Preferably something nice and sturdy and roomy that'll last a long time. Any recommendations for the best not outrageously priced cages and where I can get them (east coast US)

Choosing a New Wheel

My chins' original plastic wheel broke and I'm looking into getting them something nicer. Looking for something pretty quiet but still not too expensive. Right now I'm deciding between these two:

Fur Chewer

I've had lots of luck with my fur chewer and thought I would share for anyone else who might want some ideas.

So I rescued my boy Darwin back in January. The first picture is how he looked about a month after. I've been trying a few different things with him, bought some botanical hay [timothy hay with some chamomile and other herbs[he's such an anxious boy]] and have just overall improved his living conditions. 2nd picture is how he looked 3 weeks ago. I had been doing research and spoke with my very informed small pet store and decided to try him on a few flax seeds [4-5] daily and had brushed him daily for a week. Well he kecked at me a lot but let me do it and pic 3 was very promising.

Now I've been sick the last week and haven't been able to brush but pic 4 seems 90% better from the beginning. Trouble is I don't know if it's the flax seed or brushing but I'm feeling pretty good. I never get very much hair when I brush either but it did seem to encourage new growth.

Recent change in behavior

Hey,

My Chinchilla has recently started to change her behavior which has me somewhat concerned. When we first go her she was the sweetest thing jumping all around the room, sitting our laps sometimes she would even get on our shoulders/head. We hadn't Chin proofed the room back than so she was only allowed in the hallway. We found time to Chin proof the living room where her cage is a few weeks ago. Now she has the entire living room for herself to run around in.

The problem is she won't run in the room. As soon as we open her cage doors she will run out and make a dash for the couch. She will crouch under it and she will stay there till well forever. She will not get out under it. We had to move the couch the first several days to get her back into the cage. The following days we made it so she couldn't get under the couch anymore, so she would hopefully run/play in the room. Sadly this hasn't worked it either. She will spend her time out of the cage trying to find ways of getting under the couch. There's just no stopping her, she's obsessed with getting under the couch. She's even starting to become aggressive. When you get in her way she or try to stop her from getting under couch she will try to bite us. We've tried basically everything from ignoring her to putting her back in the hallway (we've even bought a new couch). Nothing snaps her out of her obsession.

I was hoping anyone here might have an idea on how to solve this problem?

Hey!

Hey everyone,

I'm the proud owner of a 2,5 year old female Chinchilla. After spending a good 6 months browsing the forums of CnH for information on Chinchilla care, I figured it's about time to introduce ourself.

Me and my girlfriend own a 2,5 year old female Chinchilla named Hikkup (misspelled I know long story:P). We found her at our local pet store where she was sitting quietly, in a way to small cage, looking very sad and unhappy. The store owner told us he got her a day or two ago from a local school who couldn't take care of her anymore. My girlfriend and I have always been (small)animals lovers and own several Gerbils, Syrian and dwarfhamsters. When we saw her sitting there all sad like, we just had to get her out of there. So we decided to 'rescue' her.

We bought her a large comfy cage and had the vet (specialized in rodents) check her out the following day. She turned out to be perfectly healthy. She has 'happily' been with us for about 6 months now. Sadly the last few weeks she's been developing some 'odd' behavior which I will be asking some questions about in the 'New Owner Questions' section.

Feisty ferret cage owners!

So I need some advice on what I should do for flooring. I had linoleum in there but when I got home work I saw she had chewed a little piece of it (she has had this type of floor for 7 months now and this is the first time). I then went and bought fabric to cover the linoleum, that way she couldn't get to it anymore. I used industrial strength velcro to hold it down but of course she found away to rip it up and chew on the Velcro now. now I don't know what to do...please help! she is very smart so once she learns how to rip things up so fast! And once she knows that she can that's all she wants to do!!

chin change of behavior

Hi, recently i adopt another chin to accompany my origin chin. My orginal chin changes her attitude toward me. She used to be attracted to treat and i alway uses treat to lure her back to her cage. But now she has no interest to the treat and even bite me when i feed her. I am sure that i do not have the smell of the new chin as i always feed my original chin 1st. The chins are also sperated in different cage. Please advise me what can i do for the current situation. Thanks

Weighing a chin

I have a nice digital scale, that weighs in grams. What is the best way to get a chin to sit on the scale?

Tonight I ended up putting her in a pillow case. After subtracting the weight of the box I set her in and the weight of the pillowcase she turned out to be 509 lbs.

But then she came and stood on the scale without and she weighed what looked if me between 6oo and 7oo

So....how do you all go about measuring your chins weight ?

Willfull ignorance!

I work at one of the big box pet supply stores everyone hates. Despite this, I do my best to make sure people get the best information possible about their pets and their health. I have given the link to this site to probably a dozen chin owners. Usually they are happy for the information, if only to know there are other people with the awesome critters.

Sometimes, not so much.

I had a woman buying the Sunseed garbage, and lamenting that her chin doesn't like the pellets. I explained that this is probably because chins, like kids, will always go for the tasty treats before they'll go for healthy foods. I recommended Oxbow, saying that there's no treats and higher quality pellets. It'll get her chin eating healthily.

Her response, "I told you he doesn't like the pellets."

I explained about selective feeding and how it's bad for them, but clearly it's better to 'spoil' them than actually take care of them! Ugh!

I love having a job that has me working around animals, but this makes me wish I could find something less frustrating. I'd even prefer mucking horse stalls than to watch people shorten their animals' lives.

Is my chinchilla okay?

I currently have 2 chinchillas... Chilla and Cheerio, I have had them 5 weeks now

Although, I am abit worried... As Chilla is always eager to get out of the cage and isn't scared, but Cheerio sits ontop of her bed in the corner asleep constantly and doesn't come to us or come out of the cage, is this normal or is there something wrong with her? Before we got them and still now, Chilla is very protective over Cheerio.. She always gives her kisses, checks she's okay or cleans her sometimes and was always with her everywhere she went around the cage and squashes up to her when she's asleep...so she's never really been alone until recently, could this be part of it? Or will she just take longer to tame and trust us?:hmm:

Question bout prices, and breeders

I am building a new chinchilla cage hopefully in the next month or two. It is big enough to house 4-6 chins. I currently have two, I would like to have a total of four. But what I like doing with all my animals, is each one being a different color or have some sort of marking that makes them different. I have a standard grey and a beige. My next color I want, is a homo ebony or an ebony mosaic. I am still deciding between the two. I figured if they were priced differently it may help me out. So how much money do each of these chins cost usually?? Also I am looking for someone that sells them. I have found breeders, but all the chins that are these colors are males, and I need a female. So if you know someone please let me know! Thanks!! (:

SE MI, NW OH craigslist increase

It seems like there's been a huge increase in the amount of chins I see on craigslist recently- I don't go on often, but at the beginning of the year a search would only come up with a cage listed for all sorts of critters or something, now I get pages of results. Most of them don't seem to know how to care for chins and I'm frustrated at seeing so many chins in tiny or plastic cages and fed bad stuff. I had posted a while back about proper chin care and linked to this site to help anyone interested in getting a chin or who was selling a chin give it better care. Since then, it seems to keep gong up anyways. It seems like there's been an increase in back yard breeders too (even though breeders aren't supposed to be allowed on craigslist). I wish I had the money to buy a bunch of FN's and pay the "rehoming fee" on a lot of these guys and give them the care they need. I'm posting so maybe some can get out of the situation if there are members looking, or maybe you guys could contact them directly and talk about chin care- I've gotten very frustrated and overwhelmed by it.

These are from my searches of the toledo and monroe craigslists:

Unless I messed up, these are the ones with something wrong in them like plastic shelfs, wire ramps, bad fabrics- or almost everything.

And these are just the ads that are spelled right- I havent searched for ads a letter off. Maybe a great way for someone in the area to "rescue" a chin without encouraging pet stores to stock them? Each case may or may not be an emergency, but I'm worried about the general increase in number and decrease in care.

introducing chinchillas

Hey all,

we just brought a new chin home, a 3.5 month old hetero baige male (T'oko)...

now he lived in a harsh home, with no going out of his cage (I think even once) and living alone. :banghead:

we want to introduce him to our 8.5 month old standard gray male (Fushi)

so we put both cages near each other so they get used to each other, we gave them some days (around 3.5) and we tried to let one play in the small room while the other is still in the cage seeing the other guy run.

I have to say it dosent seem good since every time T'oko got close to the cage fushi put his nose in the bars and they seem to almost bite each other, also fushi started to run to the edges of the cage so to be as close as he can to T'oko.

I didn't also cleaned until both played in same place so they get used to the other one smell... am I doing something wrong? any tips? we really want them to get friendly with one another. :hug2:

Thanks in advance :D

New Chin mommy

Hi there! I just adopted two chinchillas last Monday, and they are amazing!! Cookie is an 8 year old female, and Chi Chi is a 12 year old male. I'm keeping them separate for now, but will be introducing them eventually. Chi Chi is a little more shy, but he already lets me pet him, and seems to enjoy it. Cookie is SUCH a sweetie, and really enjoys being touched and petted. She is so expressive, it seems like I can read her body language so easily!! She is so eager to get out and play, but I've been reluctant to let her out because for one, I haven't chin-proofed the room yet, and also I'm worried that once I let her out, I might have trouble getting her back in! I don't want to end up chasing her around the room and scaring the heck out of her when we've made so much progress so fast! I guess the first step is to get the room ready, then I can worry about it. :-D I truly did not expect these little critters to steal my heart so much!! The bond is incredible!

Chinchilla less

Hello! I am new to the forum (and to chinchillas) but not to forums in general. I spend a lot of time on aquarium and hermit crab forums because I have keep 4 freshwater aquariums ranging from 10 to 29 gallons, and one 40 gallon hermit crab tank.

I work at small veterinary hospital where I basically feed and walk the animals and keep the place clean. Unfortunately, I don't get a lot of hours, so I am looking for a second job at the moment. I have been trying to save up for a car, and am currently somewhere around $1500, and I am still learning to drive haha.

Anyway, the reason why I am telling you all this is because I have a very important decision to make! Someone nearby is selling baby chinchillas ( here http://ift.tt/1sU1R4B ) and I have always wanted one. If I am going to get a chinchilla, I want to start out with a younger one so this is probably a good deal for me.

I know someone that has a male who is about 3 years old, that I babysit occasionally, but I have no real experience with chinchillas besides that so I will be doing a lot of research and asking a lot of questions if I decide to get one.

What I am here for, is to ask if I should get one, in my current position. I am only 18, working on my second job, taking online college classes starting next year. My parents are not together, so I go back and forth between their houses every few days. I have fish tanks at both houses so I am always doing something involving animals.

Would a chinchilla be ok with that? If I were to be gone for a few days at a time? I know they like to be handled and be out of their cage, which I would definitely do when I am home. So basically, the chinchilla would be out and played with for a few days at a time, and then on the days I'm not there, I would just have my siblings checking on him/her until I felt comfortable with them getting it out. I could "chinchilla proof" my room so he/she could get out and run around with me while I'm taking care of my fish or doing whatever else.

So I can spend the money (even though I probably shouldn't) and I can make sure it's being taken care of properly (because I hate when people buy animals and then mistreat them), but I don't know if I can give it a ton of attention every single day if that's what they need.

I would appreciate any input here because my parents aren't really helping. My stepmom loves the idea because we have been talking about it for a while, my mom doesn't think I need to spend anymore money, and my dad is in between.

So what do you think? Or rather, what would you do?

Non-surgical Neutering--Zeuterin. Anyone know anything about it?

I am an animal science major at my university, and we have learned about zeuterin in a number of my classes. We were always learning about it being used on cats and dogs though. Basically it is a form of non-surgical neutering, which involves an injection in each testicle.

The humane society that I work at has used it on rats successfully, and someone at the humane society asked me if it would be something that could be used on chinchillas because we recently had a group of 6 chinchillas with two babies brought in (not that they are planning on doing it to those chins, they were just curious).

Does anyone know anything about this? If it is safe, it seems like it could be a much safer and inexpensive way to curb the unplanned/pet owned litters out there.

Thanks!

Loss of Appetite?

Chia isn't eating, drinking or pooping much. I haven't had to fill her bowl in a while, and I cleaned the cage yesterday and there's very few poops in there. The ones that are are very tiny, about a third of the regular size.

Thing is, she's acting completely normal. Not at all lethargic, she looks fine and is fairly active. I let her out of her cage for playtime where she gets the run of the apartment, and last night she was running and jumping around as per usual. We keep a close eye on her, and she almost never chews anything and is fairly good about discipline, so I'm almost certain she didn't eat anything.

The fact that she's acting normally despite this confuses me. She's her normal self, maybe a bit less active during the day but I figure it's because she gets regular 2-hour playtime sessions a week now that I've moved...

Any thoughts?

[edit] I've seen her eat, but she doesn't eat much at a time. a couple of bites here and there. She will take and eat treats if I give them to her. She still chews on her ledges... Everything besides eating/drinking/pooping is normal.

Is my beige chinchilla beige?

I got a 10 week old from a vet on craigslist. I named her Serenity even though she is the complete opposite, she is around 14 weeks now. The lady told me she was a beige, and when I first got her that's what she looked like, but now I'm not so sure. She is light beige everywhere except her face and back. Her face has a dark mask and her back is dark as well. What color is she?? Or is she a beige?

New chinchilla owner from Ohio

Hi everyone! I just joined this site and have been browsing through the forums the past couple days. There's so much helpful information here! I got my chinchilla a few months ago. I'm her third owner. I wanted to adopt, but there are no exotic/ small animal shelters near me, so I looked on Craigslist. I found a sweet looking 2 year old standard grey chinchilla about an hour away from me looking for a new home. The woman who had her said that she got her from her sister, who had originally bought her in a pet store. She had 4 young kids and no time for the chin. When I got to her house it was extremely hot (this was in the middle of summer) with no air conditioning. The chin's cage was extremely dirty, and the woman gave me a bag of guinea pig food (the kind with all the colored sugary pieces) and told me that was what she ate. She had no hay. I took her home and cleaned out her cage, threw out her food and got her some pellets and Timothy hay. At first she was very skittish and would not come near me when I let her out. She didn't hop around much, just sat by the air conditioning vent and slept. Soon she started taking food from my hand. Then she started hopping up on my legs and slowly got more and more used to me. She is now an active, loving chinchilla who likes chin scratches and even being held and cuddled sometimes. Her favorite treats are rosehips and red clover. She's still in the Superpet cage I got with her, but hopefully soon I'll be able to upgrade to something bigger and easier to clean. I'm considering fleece bedding, still reading up on the pros and cons. Anyway, sorry this was so long, just wanted to say hello to everyone here. :wave3:

Adding juvenile to mature pair of females...

I have a pair of 3 year old female chins who are very close to another. They used to be very wild but I've tamed them to accept me to where one is extremely bonded to me but the other is only bonded to the other female....

The one bonded to me acts out if I take the other out without her.

Now I'm very conflicted because I was at the pet store and they have a female who is so natted, underfed and when I picked her up... Her eyes screamed 'save me'. If I had her caged near my current pair and alone would there be jealousy problems?

I understand my dominant female may never accept her..I'm okay with that but will having this single female in the same area stir up my other two? Would her being alone be stressful on her?

Please help

Wires :(

I'm always careful about the wires but somehow one of my chins got ahold of one. He chewed a nice portion of it and I'm positive it shocked him. The flash woke me up. His hair is singed a little but you cant see it unless you really look.

I tried getting a look at his mouth but I couldn't.

He seems to be acting normal otherwise. He didn't freak out when it happened but I'm still very concerned.

What would you recommend I do? One of the only exotic vets around is closed today so I can't take him in until tomorrow. Should I just monitor his behavior until then?

Color/type

My new chin was given to me by her 2nd owner. I have no info on her background. I am trying to identify her color etc. I can't tell just from reading if she is just a light grey standard or something else.

Any help appriciated.

Improving somebody else's chin's living situation?

Hello, I'm not exactly a new owner, and I don't even own the chinchilla in question.

This is going to get long.

I still live at home with my parent. Also living at home is my underage cousin, who, last christmas, got a Chinchilla.

For the first few months, the chinchilla was up in his room. I'd check on it occasionally to make sure he had water, and once even cleaned the cage because it was just getting way too gross, but mostly left the chin to its owner.

However, at the end of spring/beginning of summer, we had to move the chin downstairs, because it just got way too hot upstairs for it to be safe for him. So now there's a little corner nook where the chin's cage and my rat's cage sit about a foot apart, and seeing the chinchilla daily has of course made me more curious about him.

I started feeding the chinchilla daily, and changing his water, because I didn't think my cousin was doing it often enough. I even took him out to play when I took out my rat, but had to stop when I realized they didn't get along, and my supervision wasn't enough to keep them apart.

I don't know if my starting to care for the chinchilla made my cousin feel like he didn't have to, or if the chinchilla was receiving inadequate care for months up in his room. But my cousin's interactions with the chinchilla have dwindled to giving him a treat in the mornings. That's it.

So, my concerns are:

  • The chinchilla is lonely

The chinchilla doesn't get enough playtime

The chinchilla is being fed too many treats (specifically, raisins)

The cage--it's entirely made out of wire (with a wire bottom), has sharp edges, and is very difficult to clean.

The cage is not being cleaned nearly enough

The bath house isn't being used properly (left in, old dust)

My reservations are:

  • I did not sign up to care for this animal--I would not have signed up for him, myself, at all, as he requires way too much care

I have absolutely no money to throw at the situation

He's not actually my pet, so what I can do with him is limited

Removing the chin from the household is just not going to happen. And my mom is buying supplies like dust, hay, bedding, and the occasional toy, but a new cage is just too big a sum at once to convince her to purchase.

So my question to all you experienced chinchilla owners is--what can I do? I'd really like to improve the chinchilla's quality of life, but I just don't have it in me to personally clean the chinchilla's cage as often as he needs, play with him every day, or buy him a new cage.

Are there simple improvements I can make to the chin's cage without spending a lot of money? is there something I can do to make it easier to clean? those are my primary concerns, but if you have tips or suggestions for anything I can do for this chinchilla, I'd love to hear it.

Chinchilla needs forever home.

I'm moving out of the country sadly, and my chin needs a forever home. I had her since she was 4 months old, now she is 1 and a half. She is a female beige.

I live around Vancouver hopefully someone lives here. If you have room in your life and heart for a lil chinny then pm me please, and we can chat. This is really hard for me, buts its the best thing for her..

She will come with cage, food, toys. Preferably someone with chinchilla experience. Her personality is very sweet, but she doesn't like to be held to much, she would rather jump off you and run about. She loves rosehips.

Hi,

My male chinchilla Xiaobai was not eating alot but drink alot, but her poop are weird shape -(pointy poop, round and weird shape abit hard but sometime abit hard), he pee was normal, so i decide to bring her to my chinchilla vet, went for oral examination of dental & full body X-Ray and my chinchilla vet found out that his stomach have alot of Big & Small gas bubbles, now he is on medication now - Cisapride 0.5ml 3 times daily , metacam 0.03ml once a day & metolon 0.4ml 2 times daily (Metoclopramide). i know he definitely feel very uncomfortable & in pain because of large gas bubbles, hear some breeder say that if chinchilla in pain, feel uncomfortable & sick because of the large gas bubbles in their stomach, their penis prolapse and wont retract, his penis look very normal & nice, no hair ring , no swelling/swollen or discolour.

Will this cause my chinchilla penis unable to retract back - Prolapsed

Food Troubles

When I first got my 3 chins, I was feeding Manna Pro Pro, since that's what they were fed at the breeders, and that's what she recommended. I was new to chins, and went with her suggestions. However, the further I got through the bag, the more corn I found in it. So of course I panicked, and I switched them to Blue Seal Show Hutch Deluxe immediately. The food was so full of corn, that we decided it was safer to just do a cold switch. They handled it amazingly (and I realize how lucky I am for that)

They are doing wonderful on it. Their fur became shiner and softer, and they seemed happier, wasting less food. The last few days, I have been sick and hadn't realized how low I was on food. I quickly ran to the local Tractor Supply Company since that's where I get their food. When we got there, they are completely out out the feed and don't know if, or when, they'll get more in. Since chins can't go without pellets, I got a bag of Manna Pro. I'm worried about switching them back because of the corn, but even more worried because I don't have enough Blue Seal left to do a transition of feed.

Since they've been on Manna Pro before, do you think they'll be okay? Obviously I'll keep a close eye on them, and they always have fresh water and access to Timothy Hay.

My other question is, what brand of food do you guys recommend, where can I get it, and how much does it cost?

Has anyone had any luck/experience with this: http://ift.tt/1tBPQ82

How to- XL fleece tube covers?

I'm thinking of getting a 10 foot long six inch diameter PVC tube and cutting it into a few different tunnels. I wanted a few big ones for out of the cage playtime. Now that I'm all moved Yuki has a whole room to himself and I'm working on getting it all decked out into a (safe) chin paradise. He's got a fleece covered tube now (from his previous mom) that he doesn't chew on at all, so I'm not too worried about him chewing through the cover, but I don't want to leave the PVC exposed. If I do, I know Yuki will chew on it just because he's not supposed to. I'm wondering if anyone that's done fleece covers has a good pattern/ DIY guide that can easily be modified for different lengths of tube.

Concerned about an 8 week old kit

I posted about this kit in the general chin topics inquiring about her color, but I am a bit worried about her. She is only 8 weeks old. I got her from the humane society, and she came in in a cage with 5 other chins, one of which was her mom. The humane society separated her without any weaning process.

I have never raised a kit this young so I am not familiar with how it should go. Do I need to be worried about her not eating? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Organization help?

I have more supplies than I know what to do with...

My room space is limited, as my cages take up a lot of it.

I do have one thing with three draws, but that's it. Pretty much everything else is shoved under the cages.

How do you guys organize things? Pictures would be awesome! :D

I currently have my hay in an open box stacked on top of one of the cages... The other has all my fleece piled on top of it. I have more fleece than I can store >.< My closet space is nearly useless, so that's no good.

Rescue kit color question

The humane society that I am an intern at had several chins brought in all in one cage. When I went to look at them I just couldn't resist this one kit. She is an 8 week old female, and I have a question about her mutation (no particular reason, I am just always curious). I don't know what colors her parents were. I know she is mosaic, but she seems much more "silver" than my other mosaics, her ears are also a different shade of gray. I wanted to know if there is something like a violet mosaic? or would she just be considered a white mosaic?

Also, I have had kits before but they were 11 and 12 weeks when I got them. She is handleable but skittish. The water level in her bottle has changed so I know she is drinking, but her hay hasn't been touched. Should I be concerned or is it likely she is just nervous being in a new home?

Thanks

DIY Melamine Natural Chin Cage Ideas

The Backstory: I am currently building another 4x2x2 melamine vivarium for my bearded dragons and my brothers friend asked if i wanted to adopt his chinchilla instantly i said yes. So i thought as long as i'm building a lizard viv i thought i might as well build a cage the chin.

The Cage: I was thinking of building melamine 4x2x2 with 1/2 inch hinged wire doors and Stack it on the lizard enclosure.

The Decor: Since i love decorating my reptile cages, i thought i would make a natural chin cage. I was thinking making a false rock background to cover the three sides of the cage like this http://www.lizard-la...-terrarium.html but make false rock ledges jet out for. And then for the bottom i was thinking shaved aspen bedding with some driftwood to make a climbing tree and cut and sand a large granite stone for a homemade chinchller.

(note all the outside items such as driftwood, rocks, etc would be power washed, baked or boiled) i am also thinking of ways to make a wheel fit in a hollowed out tree stump

The Questions:
Other than pellet diet and hay do chins like any particular fruits/veggies cause i almost always have organic squash, dandelion greens, mustard greens, cactus pads, carrots, and more available for my reptiles. which i think they would be willing to share.

I have some knowledge on chinchillas but i'm obviously no expert so any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Chewing vs. Eating

Like most chins Sprocket explores with her teeth. Despite chin proofing her play space she inevitably finds something to chew on.

She appears to be eating anything she can get a chunk of. I never find chunks of the things she chews. I am convinced she is eating most all of it.

Her favorite is anything sponge rubberish. Usually Stray flip flops, and my iPad case if she can sneak up on me. I provide her with plenty of unbleached cardboard and a paper bag or two during playa time yet she has never nibbled any of those. She of course chews the only shelf available and also has an affinity for sticky labels she finds on plastic boxes used to close off her playa space. Her cage has of safe wood chews.

My concern is potential for blockage of her intestinal track and constipation. I have yet to see any white chunks of the flip flop she ate In her poop. Is it just building up in there? She is a regular pooper but she is new to my care and I don't know what normal poop looks like or how big it should be. Only one out of twenty looks like the classic discription of constipated poop dark, skinny, with pointed ends. Most of her poops are dry, dark, rounded ends, and about the size of mouse poop. It is much smaller than I expected. I think I was expecting more along the size of rat poop.

Any input would be very helpful!

Thanks

Quiet chin

My female chin is very quiet. She rarely ever makes a sound. The only times I have ever heard her was one night after I held her more than she likes she barked for awhile after I went to bed, and when I per or scratch her above the tail. From what I have read most chins are talkative? Any ideas?

Advice?

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I joined because since Sunday my chinchilla, a girl named Marshmallow, has been constipated, eating less, and has gone through periods of lethargy. I took her to the vet as soon as I could (they couldn't see her until Monday afternoon) and they took xrays that showed a blockage. However the vet I took her to (the only one in my city willing to see a chin) was not able to do much to help as the facility was not equipped to diagnose what was causing the constipation. She gave me some Oxbow Critical Care which I've been feeding her as well as metaclopramide, which Marshmallow is getting once each morning. On top of this she's had basil, raisins, and pumpkin although she's not fond of it. But still she isn't getting any better. I'm at a loss, anyone with any clue what to do, please help?

Cage donated by friend- how to disinfect!!!

Hello,

I recently was given a bigger nicer cage for my dear Pikachu from a friend at work. They had a chinchilla for about a year that sadly passed away recently and gave me all their belongings, toys, and a bigger cage for free. It is wire sides that lock into a tower shape, w a plastic bottom that sits in a stand w wheels, and a plastic top, about 4-5 ft tall.

I wasn't sure how to clean the cage exactly before changing it into a bigger home for my Pikachu. I guess I was just worried since it was another chinchillas cage before and since they died I didn't know how to thoroughly clean/disinfect it for my chinchilla.

Please let me know of any suggestions.. Soap n water, alcohol, bleach?? Also there are big wood ladders they gave me that fit in the cage but have had some chew marks from their chinchilla.. Is there a way to bake these to clean them or do I just need to throw them out?

Thanks so much in advance, want my Pikachu to have a bigger home but don't want him to "catch anything" from the old chinchilla inhabitant.

Grapevine Processing Tips

So my Dads grapevine plants are FINALLY big enough that the chins get wood off them come pruning time. YAY!

I've processed other woods (Apple, Pear, Mulberry, Blackberry, etc) but never Grapevine.

Dad pruned his grapevines back this afternoon and I've got the wood all ready to prepare but as I've never processed it before I wanted to ask how others scrub the grapevine wood when processing.

The bark on the grapevine seems much more fragile than apple or pear, so I'm worried it will all come off during scrubbing.

Any tips on processing Grapevine would be greatly appreciated.

Non-breeding m/f pair?

Hi, Ive had a pair of chins for 7 weeks now (boy and girl). Since getting them Ive given them lots of space and time to adjust. I was told they are a "non-breeding pair". Now that they are getting comfortable and trusting me, Im concerned that I should think about seperating them. Honestly I wouldnt of considered it before because I felt like they needed eachother to settle in to their new (and final) home. Theyve been through a lot, the female was kind of a hot mess when she came here but shes a different chin already😊

So I was hoping for some advice, is there really such thing as a non breeding pair? If they never made babies before but now are beginning to feel safe is there a chance that they will start breeding? :hmm:

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advise!

Wine toys

Hi everyone! I found very pretty toys made of wine. I was curious that from what part of the wine plant can be used for chin toys... a friend has a wine pland and I would like to make some toys...

Chinchilla needs forever home.. :(

With a heavy heart I write this.. Well I tried all YEAR finding a way to take my chinny with me half way across the world. It's just not gonna work. Would need thousands of dollars. I would pay if I worked, but im just a kid. My parents said we will be traveling a lot anyways, so its best to get her a new home. a forever and loving home~ First of all this chinchilla will not be available till around a month, as I want the most time I can get with her before things change.

I just want to see if there is someone with a heart full of chinny love. If there isn't then...she will have to go to the SPCA and i do NOT want that!! >:( so if the person reading this lives around Vancouver ( if anyone at all :() and you have room in your life and heart for another chinchilla please please respond!

Preferably someone with chinchilla experience. My chinchilla doesn't like to be held to much, so if you want a cuddly chin um she's not right for you, haha.

She would much rather jump on you and off the walls. Ok i'll try and just say the price and stuff im sure you don't really wanna hear me rambling. Well I never had a pet or sold one before, but the re-homing fee will be 100$. I got her on craigslist when she was 4 months old for 250$. She will come with cage, hay, food,toys.. I hope someone will love her forever as she is only 1 and a half.

This is extremely hard for me i dont even know if i'll physically be able to give her away... here is a pic if it works lemme know. :cry3:

p1140572 I think she is a beige.

Tube Material

Just curious what material you guys generally use for the tube? Also where I could get one in Canada. ..

Territorial Sand Baths

I'm introducing two male chins. On the whole it went ok, but one chin did not like the other using the sand bath. I had two out at the time so they didn't have to share but that didn't seem to matter! He's normally the shy nervous one as well! Anyone else had this problem or what they did about it?

The hop

What is with the goofy sideways chinchilla hop my chin has just started doing?

Plastic

Hey!

I just bought a cage, it's pretty big and good for chinchillas, BUT! it has alot of plastic shelves. Is there some way I can save them or do I have to get wood shelves instead? Can I put some kind of fabric on them or will they pee and or bite on it?

It's just that I'm a little lazy, but I'll do what I must.

Thankful for every answer!

Help with baytril dosage??

Hi, I have a chinchilla with a suspected UTI and the vet gave me baytril to give her orally. The vet isn't an exotic pet vet, so didn't know very much. The dosage on the bottle was .4 cc and I feel like that's a lot. What should I do? What's the average amount of baytril to administer for UTIs? Should I just give her .15 cc or something like that?

Pawing when eating rosehips?

I gave my chinchilla a whole rosehip last night and I noticed while eating he had some sort of pawing motion on the sides of his mouth. He didn't look like in pain (to me) because he continued to chew and finish the rosehip like nothing was bothering him. And he ate normally last night. But I'm still a little concerned because pawing may not a good sign anyway.

He does not paw otherwise while chewing toys, eating hays or pellets, just for rosehips. So I'm thinking do you guys have similar things happen when giving rosehips?

Color Changing?

I have a young 6 month old female that seems to have a dark mask on her face and a dark back. White belly and light sides. I keep thinking she's going to change to a more even coloration but she seems to have settled on this look, what would you call this coloration? Does anyone think it will change the more she matures?

Random chinchilla aggression

I've had two male chinchillas together for almost two months now. Most days they're great together. They snuggle up together during the day and they get plenty of playtime outside the cage when I get home from work. But once in a while, my newer chin aspen, will become aggressive towards my first chin, olly. On those nights, aspen will chase olly around the cage. I can tell olly is stressed, and sometimes he will start barking. Should I separate them for good? Or is it something I can fix. Like I said, 95% of the time they are best buds. Then on those random nights it changes. I'm at loss. Help?

Flushed ears upon returning to cage

Hi! New chin owner. Sprocket is aprox. 4 years old, she was given to me about a month ago. Things seem to be going well. She takes treats from my hand and will let me pet and scratch her. She is not interested in being held. At all. But does not avoid me during playa time and will jump on both me and the cat. Don't worry about the cat he is petrified and runs. He will not raise a paw to her. She will stay out as long as I will let her and never shows signs of over heating.

I have developed a routine of giving a treat before playtime and after playtime. Once I have decided she is in the cage for the night I close the doors and give her the treat. Only then does she press her ears down and lie down. Then her ears get Bright Pink. It seems if I pet her and give her another treat she perks up her ears return to normal and she starts to run around her cage again.

So the QUESTION is, is she just ticked off about returning to her cage for the night or should I be concerned? Do chins show emotion in their ears?

Help my Chinchilla Hates Girlfriend :(

I have a 13 year old female chinchilla who has always been pretty skittish and timid but over the years has become very comfortable with me where she will allow rubs and sitting in my lap and to be picked up. I recently met a girl I love very much and we are moving in together. My Chinchilla is set up in a bedroom with free roam that is all lined in pine board and obstacles so she has her own environment.

When my chinchilla met my girl friend we sat Indian style and my chinchilla began making agitated noises and acting very excitable, circling my girlfriend, leaping over her knee, jumping in her lap and grunting and stretching to get close to her face.

Last night we tried again and my chinchilla actually bit her on the lip and arm, drew a little blood even. I have never seen her behave this way and I am at a loss. She has met other people who are my friends and I have had people feed her when I am on long trips and I have not heard of her every being aggressive.

Does anyone have any insight on this behavior or tips? I am just stunned and was not prepared for this at all.

Have to vent about the local pet store.... UGH

I can't stop being upset about this. I have two small pet shops right near me, one that sells just supplies and one that sells supplies and small animals/birds/fish and sometimes adopt out cats for the local shelter. Well today I needed cat food real bad but the smaller supply-only shop was out of the kind I needed so I had to go to the other one and they had a VERY sweet little chinchilla in there but man oh man did I get upset over the poor thing's conditions.

It was a fairly small (obviously pretty young) pink white chin being kept in the bottom half of a FN. There were two ferrets living in the unit right above it and a cage full of rabbits RIGHT next to its. The pans in the cage were bare plastic, I saw no kind of bedding, so it was either peeing on the bare plastic or in its bath house. There was a wheel in there but it was an awful plastic one and it wouldn't surprise me if the chin was really younger than it should have been for a wheel. There was a bare wire ramp in the cage, and two hammocks made of unsafe materials. The dust bath was sitting in there with it, and was presumeably left in there all the time. The chin's food was FULL of seeds and dried fruit and crap and I didn't see ANY hay in there for it, and it had a great big bowl full of water just waiting to have an accident happen. There was NOTHING for the poor thing to chew on except for its many plastic cage furnishings and one lonesome wooden shelf that was pretty mangled. I wanted to just buy the thing and bring it home so I could care for it properly but obviously that was out of the question, I don't have the space or resources for another chin, but MAN did that make me mad. Most of the small animals aren't kept in horrible conditions there but the rabbits and chinchillas there always make me upset. I don't know where on earth they get their animals but I'm sure its not from any responsible breeder and I'm sure the people who buy them aren't given good advice when it comes to care... :hair:

I really wanted to rip someone a new one over the chinchilla's conditions but I know the employees probably don't know better or aren't able to do anything about it and my terrible social anxiety makes confronting people difficult even when I'm super angry. I wonder if I should write a letter to the company or something. I doubt it would do much good but I really hate not being able to do much of anything. UGH! Its NOT OKAY!

Anyone else get horribly frustrated seeing chinchillas trapped in pet shops?

Cold

It 64 in my house right now is that told for my chinchilla?

God Is Good And His Love Last Forever

Will he get stressed?

Hey!

I'm getting a chinchilla the 18th of october. My parents are separated and we're going to have 2 cages, one at my dad's house and one at my mom's apartment.

My question is, will he get stressed if I move him each week?

I will first get him hand tamed before I move him his first time.

Thankful for every answer!

cage advice

As I'm sure you all have noticed... Its impossible to find a complete chin safe cage. They all either have plastic or wire shelves. I've had my cages for a long time and its time for replacements. I've built my own shelves and bases. I find it difficult to talk myself into buying a cage knowing I won't even use half the cage being that I'll throw out the shelves and base so they don't eat it. I just can't believe there is no way around this. There must be a place that sells acceptable cages or the cage without the base and shelves. Any advice? Also, how often should you replace their cage?

Help. Chinchilla not drinking but still eating?

My chinchilla stopped drinking water from the beginning of this week. At the beginning, he also stopped eating pellets (he is not a big fan of pellets compared with hay anyway), but still ate a handful of hay per day, which is his normal amount. Now he starts to eat more pellets and still continues a handful of hay. His poops are a little smaller but are still many. I don't think he is peeing, as expected from not drinking water.

I have been trying to feed him water but he seems to hate water. I force him to use his normal bottle, he keeps turning away and only when I persevere, he would push the ball valve one or two times. I also feed him using syringe, he accepts it a little more but still does not like it. I try to feed him twice per day and 10 ml in total. But I would say only a portion really goes into his mouth.

I have tried another water bottle, no success. I also use filtered and distilled water, which does not make a difference neither. He used to drink quite a lot water and I'm really confused about him. The possible causes I can think of are:

1. I was switching cages between him and another male chinchilla for the first time. Maybe this is too stressed for him? But why water, not anything else?

2. This Sunday night I didn't wait until the distilled water cool until very cool (I was rushing to sleep, so stupid) and filled the bottle with lukewarm water. I thought the water temperature was acceptable based on my touch. But maybe this has burned his tongue? I feel this is more likely to be the reason.

3. There is a new scar right above his mouth. It is a red patch without blood. I don't know whether this is due to the other chinchilla or is an injure by himself when playing. But maybe this is related in an unknown way?

Again, I'm only postulating the reasons because I couldn't find much information about his behavior -- drinking and eating usually come together. Has anybody met this situation before? How can he hate water so much? What should I do?

for those crazy kiwi wood chewers

My chins love kiwi wood so much of course we are out of it and we can't order it from our girl til January. So, I did a lot of research and surprisingly I couldn't find anybody else that sells them! But I noticed people use them for decoration purposes, I have contacted this website and they agreed to send me some untreated ones so I can boil and bake them myself. Also this Canadian website carries them for small animals.

Hopefully this helps if you are desperate and can't wait til January.

Small enslosed playpens?

Anyone have ideas for a very small enclosed playpen? I dont actually want it for them to play in. There whole room is built to let them run around. But i wanted to try giving them there dust baths outside of the cage now to avoid the mass dust mess inside. But, naturally, when they came out tonight they were rly only concerned in exploring. (granted it was there first time out in this new room.) But still, id like to have a small enclosure that i could let them into. Where theirs rly only room for them to focus on a dust bath.

And suggestions?

They waste a lot of hay!

Guess I'm not the first one asking this but since I'm on my phone the search function doesn't really work and our house WiFi is down. :( If so please direct me to another thread before deleting this please...

Our chins waste a lot of hay, basically after maybe 3 days the bottom of the cage would be covered with hay soaked in urine that they throw away.

Is it the hay? Or is it my chins?

I've heard people day 1st cut hay and 2nd cut hay, what does that mean? My chins seem to like those thin ones.

Or is there some kind of feeder I can purchase that can prevent this?

And please give me recommendations on where you get your hay if you are really happy with it.

Thanks a million!!!

Fake soil as a substrate

Hi folks, newbie here to the forum *sheepish wave* :)

I'll be getting my first hedgehog in November, and at the moment I'm trying to organise everything so that I'm ready for hedgie's arrival! I've been reading a lot about the pros and cons of different bedding (seems everyone's a fleece fan!), but personally I don't like the idea of fleece. I'd like the hedgie to have some burrowing possibilities.

The only thing I haven't seen mentioned anywhere I've looked is a soil-type set-up, like what you'd see in a terrarium. I've found this fake soil made from coconut, and I was wondering what experienced hedgie guardians thought of it as a substrate? AFAIK coconut is ok for hedgies, it'd be nice and soft on their wee feet, and they could muck about if they wanted. Possible cons are difficulty to detect funny poops/urine (though not if a litterbox is used) and high humidity (?) but that's pure guesswork.

Here's what the site says about it anyway:

Quote:

100% natural substrate

Ideal for natural terrarium set-ups

Increases humidity in terrariums

Stimulates natural digging and burrowing behavior

Nutritional substrate for live plants

Exo Terra Plantation Soil is made from compressed coconut husk fibre from the plantations of tropical Asia. This ecological substrate is ideal for increasing humidity in the terrarium and is totally safe for frogs, salamanders and burrowing or digging animals. The substrate can also be used as an incubation medium because of its hygroscopic properties. This 100% natural substrate can even be used as a nutritional planting soil for live plants in a terrarium set-up.

What do ye folks think? I would love some advise!

2 males 2 females

Earlier this year I brought home my first two male chinchillas, and I loved them so much around a month ago I got two females from a friend who didn't want them anymore. Yesterday they moved into the same room as my my males, though the cages are away from each other. The boys definitely know they're their but they aren't too bothered by them, their behaviour has so far mostly been the same and the boys seem to be invisible to the girls.

Just firstly to say I am in NO way planning on breeding. That stuff goes way beyond my head and I don't want the complications, rather enjoy them all as pets. I also know they can never meet face to face and that's fine, separate play times separate everything. However my question is this as I got curious.. Could they hypothetically all live together happily in the same cage? Would the boys go mental and try and kill each other? Just to reiterate I'm NOT gonna put them together, ever, but has anyone had any success stories with a group like that? Or can it only be 1 male per group?
