Which Cage Would You Recommend?

Hi 🙋🏻‍♀️ everyone,

Our baby chinchilla Tay Tay is now 8 months old and when we got her she was 3 months old and small. Because of blessed lockdown, we bought a cage that was for a guinea pig but fairly tall. Now that she’s grown quite a lot, we’re going to get her a new cage better suited for a chinchilla.

We’re looking at both the Critter Nation and Ferret Nation Double Cages.

From what I’ve gathered by looking at the two, the Ferret Nation Cage’s bars are vertical and spaced 1” apart...

Chinchilla noises randomly

I’m not exactly sure why, but sometimes at random moments my chinchilla makes sounds whenever no one’s present or in a different room. Is it because she’s bored or something? She does have another friend to hang out so I’m not sure why she does that. I know it’s not threatening and she perfectly fine when I check up on her. I really appreciate it if anyone could help me out on what it could mean.

ISO Male Chinchillas in Long Island NY area

Hello, I have a 7 year old male chinchilla and I’d love to bond him with a friend or two! I will consider any male chins within 3 hours of Suffolk County but I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to travel that far. Please let me know if you know of any good breeders around this area or of any chins that need to be rehomed!

What is normal weight fluctuation in a chinchillla?

Disclaimer: I know I am likely overthinking/overinterpreting things since I just lost my other chin, but just want to make sure.

Hello again!

I've been weighing Susu every couple of days this past month just to monitor how she's doing with the loss of her buddy. She's a big girl (has been above 700g for as long as I've had her). When I weighted her in late November she was around 750g. Since then she's mostly weighted in the 760s range, but the...

Sugar free cool aid and food coloring

Making some toys and ledges for my babies of course since they are only 3 months I won't be using the ledges just yet but wanted to start making my own cause they can be a bit pricey.I have ordered some awesome ledges and stuff from Etsy and I can't wait to set their FN cage up .So with that being said I wanted to color some and I heard cool aid(sugar free of course) and food coloring are good for coloring. I wasn't sure if the food coloring I have is best to use or not so any thoughts on...

Chin may have eaten metal

We bought a new hanging chew toy that said it was ok for chins and had decent reviews but clearly was not. We should have known better. Our girls snapped the wire and we can only find one chewed end that keeps the blocks in. We think they likely ate the other one. They are acting fine and energetic and we will contact a vet but wondering if anyone has experience with this. Picture of an unused toy end like the one they likely ate attached.

Hi everyone 👋

A couple months new to chinchilla owning here, i have a gorgeous lil girl, and I was wondering how to find out for sure what colour she is? I'm not planning on breeding or anything, but I was just wondering, and I've searched the internet, and nothing seems confirming? Just wondering if anyone could help me out here? Chinchilla playtime and getting them back in?

Hi everyone, I brought home two beautiful male chinchilla kits last Sunday. They are called Onyx and Dio! ☺ I am a new Chinchilla owner but have had much experience with various rodents and rabbits in the past. Already I can see the vast differences in their care regime and how wonderful pets they are! I am, naturally, really worried about their welfare and if my care is 'good enough' for them.

I have seen online that chinchillas require playtime and exercise outside of their enclosure, but...

Chinchilla Not Eating Hay (Non-Emergency )

Hi,

I'll start this with saying he is currently eating pellets and critical care. He has a substitute diet, but getting him back to normal, or something easier to find would be nice.

Last year Ozzy had stopped eating due to dental problems. He was able to get dental work done and nursed back with critical care. However I was never able to wean him off of it, and he will not eat hay (at least in the quantity he should), or chew on sticks. He will however eat standard chinchilla pellets.

I...

Tips for introducing a chinny buddy?

Hello everyone.

As I posted recently, my Kumo passed 2 weeks ago now.

One of my biggest concerns in all of this was Susu, my other chin, as they had been together basically her entire life. Even though Susu always seemed to be more of an independent little chin, she and Kumo often cuddled and he often sought her out so I was worried she'd be lonely and I ordered a chinny buddy in hopes it might help.

I was super excited when it arrived and once she woke up and was more active, I brought...

Urination on the couch

Hi guys!
My chin which has been adopted a month or so, although he has a specific urination spot where I have put a toilet tray, the past few days he is peeing also on the couch. He is still using the tray so it does not seem as a change of spot generally. Why is he doing that; Is it territorial thing. Because he is about 4-5 months old.

Hello first
he is a man and 1 years old
my son is constantly itching and his fur is very sparse
He's very active during the day and I can see him scratching his hands, feet and hips
I feed him pellets and hay but he doesn't gain weight, on the contrary, I feel that he is losing weight.

(Question) Chinchilla water bottle leak?

My chinchilla (Toby), in all of his greatness, started drooling a while ago, we took him to the vet and they trimmed his teeth, which had been the problem. Then it came back, same procedure. But now a third time! This time I'm a little suspicious because it might not be drooling. While my chinchilla drinks water, in all of his greatness, the water seems to drip down his mouth, eventually leading to his chest area. I have had my chinchilla, in all of his greatness, for 5 years and have never...

Diabolical Chin Behavior

My chin has started a new behavior that I wanted to know if anybody else has experienced. It seems like my chin will make random noises in the morning if he feels that I am sleeping too long (the cage is in my room). He started off with little, yet noticeable squeaks, but this morning he sounded like he was getting stabbed to death (I have never heard such a horrific sound from him before). I jumped out of bed and ran to the cage. He was just sitting there pretty as you please. Then he...

Can someone tell the meaning of this sound ?

Hello guys,
I'm new here and new to the chin world. My girlfriend and I got a chinchilla at the beginning of October. Now he is 5 months! He's a cutie and although not really active when in his cage, when it's time to get him out, he zooms everywhere.
He doesn't know when to stop so we allow him 15/20min out of his cage.

Since a few days, he has been acting really weird towards me (main caretaker). He nibbles on my hand a LOT, it's not hurting but i've notice that he just nibbles and sit on...

Chinchilla with URI

Hi guys,

So my poor Luna who is about to turn 3 at the end of this month has had the last couple months of what I can only assume is hell.

To start she had some slight elongation in her molars which was dealt with. This was followed by a sore in her mouth from the procedure, I assume from the contraption they used to keep her mouth open during surgery. She was doing well, gaining weight steadily but was still being syringe fed mushed pellets.

Her breathing seemed a little fast last...

Not chewing - and other newbie questions/concerns

Hello Everyone,
I just adopted my first chin a week and a half ago. He is a standard gray 8 month old male. He has not shown any interest or chewed on any of his woods, loofa, pumice, bay cubes,or straw we have given him. He only chews on the seagrass occasionally that I used to make one of his toys. I've tried hanging them up and taking them apart to spike some interest but he couldn't care less. He also eats less than 1 tablespoon of Oxbow pellets and about half his size in Oxbow hay...

Oddly energetic after anesthesia - is this okay?

Sir chewsiph rodontus had to be knocked out so they could do his first ever xrays and dental check up. I was hoping to get some opinions here on what’s good, bad, things to look for, tips...etc ( I trust the vet but I want any information I can get :) )
Everyone has their own ways of handling being drunk but he’s oddly energetic ; He’s spunky anyways but he’s acting a bit wigged out and won’t let me help get the gunk ( eye lube ) wiped away from his eye. Plus he’s just “off” a bit mentally...

What's new?

With the new software and lots of old members coming back, thought it might be fun to see what everyone has been up to.

Travels? New pets? What's new?

Old girl doesn't jump like she used to 🥺

I have a chin that absolutely loves to run on the wheel but is very timid when it comes to hopping from ledges. She's at least 15yrs and I'm thinking of buying a pet ramp so she can comfortably come out for playtimes.

Have you experienced anything similar with your aging chinchillas? Could she just be scared and need to be "trained" to hop again? She seems physically comfortable/happy when running on the wheel & taking dust baths.

REHOMING TEO FEMALE CHINCHILLAS, NEW ENGLAND AREA

Hello everyone,

Sadly I have to rehome my two girls Nyx and Nova. Being a working student at my local barn as well as having lots of schoolwork has made it very difficult to give them the time and attention they need.
Nova is 2 and Nyx is 2 1/2. Just like many chinnes they love to run around and climb, and they need lots of space to do so. They have a 2 story ferret nation cage with lots of ledges and hides to climb around on. I let them out around 4 hours a day to run around my room. They...

How to help a chinchilla in mourning?

As I posted recently, my boy Kumo passed away this week. Susu and him have been cagemates since their days at the rescue almost 10 years ago.

Susu is hard to read because she's always been a pretty passive and somewhat lazy chin (she's always been the type that would rather watch TV or watch others run rather than run a ton herself). She's also naturally more aloof, likes attention but on her time and on her terms.

However, I am a bit concerned about her being on her own for the first...

How to help a chinchilla in mourning?

Kumo the chinchilla. Good-bye, buddy.

Kumo passed away December 1st, in my arms.

I knew that morning he was too weak to continue fighting. I take some solace that even in his disease, he was well enough for 3 weeks of his last month to play and be mostly himself, but I wish there had been more I could do. I wish I had caught something was off earlier. Rest in peace, buddy. I already miss you so much.

Shedding? Fur slipping? :/

Hi
I've had two chinchillas for around three years now, and there's been a weird development with one of them. She appears to be shedding, but its gone on for too long at this point. My instant thought was fur pulling/fur slipping, but it's happening around her head too, where she can't reach. She's not losing fur, the fur regrows, she just seems to be eternally shedding. I'm so confused...

Chew-safe bridges/enrichment.

Hello! I'm doing some Christmas shopping for my chinchillas and thought it would be a good idea to add some more enrichment to their cages w/ a bridge, playground, or tunnel. I found several ADORABLE bridges but none of them listed the type of wood they were made with! I did find a couple made with chew-safe apple wood, but they all seemed mostly geared towards hamsters :/
I'm looking for help on how to contact manufacturers/find safe toys.
Any ideas?

Advice?

I just bought 3 Chinchillas, advertised as 2 females and 1 male. The 2 females are 6 years old and 3 years old (apparently). Male is apparently 1 years old. The 6 year old is very blind, both eyes are completely filmed over with a milky look and the other looks like she has a moon in her eyes? It’s only covering half, but she seems to see more than the other.
Should I take the male out? I don’t want them pregnant considering their obvious health concerns/issues?

Is this serious?

Hi All,

We noted a small but weird lump on Chino's belly. He had not objected when I lightly touched it so I guess it doesn't hurt (much?). No noticeable deterioration in his mood / behavior / eating / weight. Lately his brother is chasing him all over the cage (two story critter nation with lots of shelves, two houses and a wheel)., but it does not look like a chinchilla bite... more like an insect bite. But they live at home, no other pets. I am attaching a picture and a zoom-in. Chino is...

New chubby chonker unit: Gus Gus

Thought I'd pose some photos of my new chubby chonker chin, Gus gus! Named after the lil fat brown mouse in Cinderella. :)

He's about 6 months old now. Loves the little wheatie things in the timothy hay and apple sticks! He likes doing parkour wall jumps in his cage, and going bonkers whenever a car/noise outside startles him. When I pet him he likes to groom and nibble on my hand, but doesn't liked being petted on his head. Chin and chest scritchies are ok-ish, he really just prefers...

Oxbow critical care - Apple Banana?

Hello everybody!

I was wondering if anybody knew why it's impossible to find Oxbow's Apple Banana-flavored critical care?

I'm lucky that Kumo will eat Anise flavored (although not as eagerly) but he likes the Apple-Banana so much and he's been bouncing back so well from how weak and lethargic he was that I hate switching it up on him.

If anybody knows where to find some Apple-Banana, I'd be so grateful if you point me that way!

My chin is making small noises from his nose I think

It started a few weeks ago and I thought nothing of it. He is still drinking and eating normally, normal poops. I did have to separate him form his mate since she was eating all the food. He seems lighter and a little skinnier since then and not as active. He makes strange sounds that sound like it comes form his nose. Like its stuffed, almost like a small squeak from his nose. Chinchilla eye

Can someone know what this might be?
IMG_20201122_021825.jpg
My little chinchilla had closed eyes a few days after birth. We took it to vet and they told us to clean her eyes and drop few drops of tobrex eye drops. Few days later she open her eyes but then she could not close one eye. We found another vet and he gave us some eye serum and said to give chinchilla few drops every two hours.
After a few days eye looks like that.

How long can chin be in "burrito" blanket?

Hello!

In a previous post I addressed my chinny (Koji) possibly having ringworm. I went to the vet and they gave me BioHex Shampoo (chlorhexidine/miconazole) to be applied once daily to the affected areas after fur is wetted , left to soak for 10 min, and then rinsed after application. I have been doing just that, making sure to blow dry (on cool) him after each application.

Surgery?

Hello everyone,

I am at a painful crossroads and could use some advice from experienced owners.

My almost 12 yo Kumo had an ultrasound yesterday because he'd not been feeling like himself. The vet found a lesion in his liver that they suspect could be one of 3 things: a hematoma, a liver abscess, or a tumor. Obviously, 2 of those 3 things are scary and potentially dangerous.

She explained surgery to remove that liver lobe is an option, but now I'm having to make the decision: do I want to...

Hi all, my chinchilla has a swollen finger on his right paw and he is favouring this paw by holding it up when he rests. Chin Dust Causing Eye Issues?

My usual chin dust I use was out of stock, but there was a bagged version by the same company (All Living Things) that I bought instead. Kit anal protusion

We have a two week old kit. All four have been thriving. Tonight at weigh in and petting time we saw the largest, a male, has some kind of slightly bloody (fleshy?) protusion from the anus. What on earth could be going on? His behavior is normal. A vet is in our future but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience.

His daddy just got neutered and that didn't go as well as our previous neuter did. (He's okay it was just a rougher procedure.. The other vet used dissolvable sutures...

Chin's Stomach Gurgles On Occasion

I have a male chin less then a year old whose tummy makes a loud gurgling sound every so often. It doesn't happen a lot, but I can certainly hear it when it happens and I'm close by. He's eating, drinking, and behaving normally. His feces look like how they always look. I know the gurgling can be a sign of bloat, but he seems totally fine. Could this just be a quirk of his?

Chin proof playpen?

Hi!
I just moved into a new apartment and my landlord heavily stressed that any damage to the house by my chin would be charged to me. He was apprehensive about allowing me to have the chin at all so I take things very seriously and try to be careful.
For playtime I am looking for a playpen because my chin is a wall chewing fiend. Does anyone know of any good options that are tall and sturdy enough?

Bonding and age difference?

I recently got a 5 month old chin, Gusgus! (named after the fat Cinderella mouse)

Should I wait until he's a bit older before trying to bond him with my 4-5 year old chin? Once I put Gusgus into his cage across the room from Mr. B's cage, Mr. B got pretty antsy and I'm worried things would be unequal between them. Gusgus is still young and can hardly jump onto any platforms or chew sticks as efficiently as Mr. B can. I'm a bit worried Mr. B might bully him?

I come in the room. There is a click and then what sounds like a snore. She continues to do this. I have a video but I don’t know how to post it. She also moves her neck really weird which I am most concerned about. I have a video but don’t know how to post it. How do I post it? I am very concerned.

How Old Before An Outside the Cage Excursion?

I have a chin that is going to turn 1 years old in November. I have been advised in the past that he is a bit too young for a lot of playtime outside the cage, but I really would like to coax him out a little bit just to get his feet wet (so to speak). Is he old enough to be outside the cage? I don't want him getting bored.

Likely teeth problems with chin

Hi all, we think our chinchilla has teeth problems. She's picking up pellets, gnawing on them a little bit and throwing them aside. She's lost a lot of weight.

We didn't realize what was happening because she's also been throwing her food out of her bowl, because she's like that. She's still pooping and drinking water.

Right at this second she's still bright eyed, alert, grooming, bathing, bouncing and chewing toys. We picked up some critical care from the pet store and we're going to...

Sick chinchilla

Hi everyone,
My chinchilla Marlo has been having some issues eating. Last Thursday she went 14 hours without eating but finally gave in after approaching her food dish 3 times and ate around 8:30pm. The next morning I weighed her and she had maintained her weight but then went another 14 hours that day without eating. This time around 8:30 she picked up two pellets and ate them then went back to bed. I put some of her pellets in the blender and offered them to her and she ate a ton. She was...

Male and female chins have been kept together

Hi,
A friend of mine had two chinchillas but had to give them away because she couldn't afford them anymore. I took them to make sure they went to a good home because no one else was interested.

My friend was keeping a male and female chin together for about a year, or so I was told. I have them both together, but I'm not ready for Chinchilla babies!!!

Can I separate them without a problem? Will they have bonded, and struggle being apart? Will one or both of them need a companion when I...

Hi, all!

I need to ship my Asa from Germany to the States in early December. United doesn't take animals now because of the pandemic. Lufthansa only takes dogs, cats, and rabbits. So, I need to find a pet shipper. Has anyone had experience with an international pet shipper that they can recommend?

2 chins 2 wheels?

After talking to the breeder and considering if I want to cage my chins separately or together, I've decided I'm going to try to bond them and then hopefully have them live in the same cage together once they're bonded. Should I get two of everything (food bowls, wheels, water bottles, huts) so that they don't fight over stuff?

Oops just realized I should have posted this under another topic, sorry about that! Not sure how to delete/move this.

Water

My chinchilla only drinks a few mls of water a day and his poos are a bit small. Besides tap and bottled water is there any other type of water I can try? He is happy and otherwise healthy.

Chew Spots on Hips (double post)

I have this question in FAQs as well...not sure where to post what for this kind of question.

Chewsiph has done this off and on since forever ( 8 years old, had him 7 years ). He's my only son but he gets a lot of attention, always.
He likes to chew his fur on his right hip / butt area and sometimes starts on the left side too. He doesn't chew /pluck to a point of sores or anything, just looks like a really, really bad hair cut.

It's off and on - He has moments it's okay, almost not...

Reintroducing Cagemates

Hello,

I have 2 chinchillas that have been cagemates for about 2 years. They are both female. They have never had fights, and always loved to cuddle together. About a month ago, I noticed one of them limping, and took her to the vet. The vet diagnosed it as torn soft tissue, and issued cage rest. I separated the two, and kept the one on cagerest in a smaller cage, right next to the original cage, where the two chins can see each other and smell each other. I finally got the ok today from...

Our 7 month old Chinchilla is having very soft poos

Hi everyone,

Our little chinchilla Tay Tay, is having very soft poops this evening. At first they were like goop plops (couple of hours ago) but now they’re starting to look more formed but smear if she steps in them. I’ve had to clean up her backside and back legs a couple of times.

She’s very alert and not lethargic at all. She’s drinking water wanting to eat her dry food but after reading previous posts, we’ve taken away her dry food and only left her Timothy hay and water 💧 for her...

Anal infection?

Hi,
My 15 yo female has struggled for a few months on and off with small dry poops. As a side note, she lost her sister at the time this started. I’m sure she’s missing her despite extra attention TLC.
She started hunching when pooping and looking really unhappy, although eating, drinking, behaving normally. I took her to the vet Thursday. Vet did x-rays, bloodwork, and sent off a culture.

Anis is infected. The area surrounding it is swollen and it looks like a little milky white stuff is...

Help with fureating and one doesn't like the other anymore?

Hello,

I wasn't quite sure if my question is at the right place, but I guess I'm a new owner and at a loss with this situation.

Currently I have a few problems with my 2-year old Chinchillas ( 2 of them Chorin and Watagashi) and hope to get some advice.

How quickly do chinchillas pass/digest thiings?

Mr B made some strange poops today, they are kind of soft, misshapen, and little bit of it is even gummy, like... a booger. o_O I'm wonder if this is him passing a piece of duck tape from last week (he got a piece and chewed on part of it over night :/ ), or if its the dried nettle leaf he ate yesterday.

Since they poop so much, I kind of assume stuff goes through pretty quick? He had some normal/regular poops earlier in the evening, and they appear back to normal now. I'll still keep an...

Poop smell

Hi everyone

I know this is a topic that has been discussed before but I didn’t come across a direct answer. About 2.5 weeks ago my chinchilla Marlo had 1 cluster of really smelly poos. As soon as I picked her up I could smell it and realized it was coming from one pile of poo. Being a crazy chin mom I have now been smelling all of her poo! None of them for 2.5 weeks have smelled like that since. It was just one cluster that one day. They all have a very slight smell but only when my nose is...

Did the vet hurt my chin??? Huge bald spot after seeing the vet and eye infection. Picture

Hello. I took my chin to the vet yesterday because his eye infection will not go away. They told me there is nothing else they can do (they only prescribed one antibiotic, terramycin ointment) and dexamethasone steroid drop. They told me to use the steroid from now on. That evening, I noticed when my chin ATTACKED me and hissed at me that there was a large bald, moist bald spot below his chin. He has had an eye infection for a while that I was worried might be fungus, so I'm not sure if this...

Might be homing a second chilla and I have questions

Background - I have my little gray-man who is basically my only child. Energetic and fairly territorial over my attention to him. I have had him since 2014 and the previous owners at the time said he might have been 1 year old but we all have no *real* age. So Chewsiph is about 8 years old and been with me for 7 years. Should I bring my chin to an introduction?

I'm thinking of getting another male chinchilla so Mr. B will have some company!

On chincare.com I read that it's good to bring the other Chinchilla so that you can ensure it gets along with the new one? Does anyone have any experience doing this? Do I just let them sniff each other through the cage? There was no specific info on what to do.

As for bonding chinchillas, I read about chin care's CWAC method...

Fur slip during introductions

So I have 2 chinchillas (a boy and a girl - the girl is spayed bc she had an infection) and today was their first proper introduction. I put them in a new room with new toys, some treats and both their clean dust baths.

They ignored each other for about 10 minutes just running around. Then my girl started chasing the boy. I know that's normal but after a minute (no attacking or screaming) the boy fur slipped. Just a little like maybe 1-2cm width. He wasn't hiding from her or anything just...

Foot chewing

Hello!

I was just petting my chin and noticed something about her foot. She has a small bald patch on it, that I never remember seeing. It isn't a wound, and there is no blood or a scab, but the hair is gone. It's only on one foot, and isn't that big, but I know that fur chewing can be a big problem for chins.

She gets a lot of monitored playtime, has a lot of chew toys, water, hay, and food, so I don't know what could be causing it.

Does anyone know what this could be? Or do you have...

Taking a chinchilla out of it's "house"

I remember reading somewhere (I forget which website), that it's not good to take a chinchilla out of it's little house/hut thingie when it runs in there, because that's their "safe space". You should try to pick it up/get the chinchilla when it's not in its house/hut. Does anyone have an opinion of that?

When I come to get Mr. B out of his cage for playtime he always tries to hide in one of his 2 little huts. He does get pretty defensive when he's in his hut and I'm trying to catch him...

Hi all, I really need some advice. Please no judgment.
My chinchilla hadn't been eating and drooling for three days so I took him to get dental work. They fed him CC there and he came home. He's been home with me for another 5 days and still isn't eating. He's so fussy that I haven't been able to get a lot of CC into him. Chin Spin Wheels

Hi everyone,

I live in Canada 🇨🇦 and wonder if the company that manufactured the Chin Spin Wheel, went out of business? I’ve looked on Amazon in both the Canadian and US sites to no avail. There’s another version of it on Etsy but I don’t like the fact that it’s all aluminum. Our chinchilla is in our daughter’s room and I’m afraid it will be very noisy. The one that I’d like to get is made by Quality Cage Crafters.

Anyone know where these are available to purchase from these days? 😊

How long before you should throw out toys?

This might be a dumb question, but how long do you recommend keeping toys before they should be thrown out? Like if they're not mostly chewed up or peed on or showing any obvious issues, is there a time limit where afterwards you should throw out wooden chews or vine toys or other chews etc.? Also is there anything to look out for that might hint that a toy should be thrown out?

My chins love my heated blanket

So the other day while I was cleaning up in my room I let my two chins out to play on my bed, not realizing my heated blanket was on. They spent the whole time sitting on it.
So today I figured I would let them out with the blanket on a lower setting and the whole time they crawled around under the blankets on top of the heated one and wouldn’t come out. I’ve had them for six years now and I’ve always kept them in a cooler environment, is this normal? And safe?

Chinchilla noises randomly

I’m not exactly sure why, but sometimes at random moments my chinchilla makes sounds whenever no one’s present or in a different room. Is it because she’s bored or something? How to clean a hay bag?

I have a hay bag that was peed on but I can’t put it in the washer with all of this on it.ED8E0A15-04F4-456D-B719-DB6FBC1587BC.jpeg

So phresh bedding / Aspen or Soft wood

I know both aspen and pine are safe.
I tried both aspen and soft wood ( natural blend of pine and other shavings ) from so phresh adding to paper bedding.

I used to use only paper bedding but they eat it so now I mix it with wood bedding. They chew and eat wood bedding too but I feel like wood is safer than paper.

I liked the aspen one because the soft wood one is very light and fly away, however you can see a picture of chin on only soft wood one, not on aspen one.
And I think I read this...

Best hay brand?

Hi guys, I have owned chinchillas for a little over a year now, they are currently on Mazuri pellets but hay wise, I am still going back and forth. I had them on Oxbow Timothy for well over the year I've had them, but lately it's quality had gone down and I don't like it. I switched to Small Pet Selects and it was horrible, very short strands and more dust than hay. What do you guys recommend hay wise for my little guys? They aren't picky, but I am and want them to have good, green long hay...

2 sweet young bonded male chins (1 beige and 1 ebony/grey)

Hi,
I am in the Boston/ MA area and looking to potentially rehome my two chinchillas. One is two years old and one is about to turn one. They are both unreal cute, extremely bonded, sweet, adorable little personalities. They snuggle, run to see you, and will sit on your hand.

I love them dearly but live in a small apartment and am allergic to their hay, dust bath, etc. I also want them to have a home with a bigger enclosure than I have room for, and more places for them to run around.

I am...

Giardia but vet says don't treat it. Please help me out.

This is going to be long and I apologise in advance but please read and help me out. We are on our second vet now and I just don't know what to do.
It all started back towards the beginning of June. My 4 month old chinchilla stopped pooping. He also wasn't eating much and was barely touching water. He went to the vet and they prescribed critical care. He had to be hand fed the CC and really wasn't enjoying the whole process after about a week I called the vet to give him and update and...

Safe tape?

I built a playpen out of cardboard and didn’t think she could get to the duct tape. Well she can, I had to stop her so is there a safe tape I can use instead. The duct tape is on the outside of the playpen. This is what it looks like. She gets to it where the fleece is draped and low corners.E5933E78-5C4D-45DF-880C-9C1F94530F91.jpegB60211A5-C983-4EE1-84C7-07BAC5E9D202.jpeg[ATTACH type="full"...

Pellet to hay ratio..

Since January I've been feeding Mr. B Sherwood, which he will eat but never finishes the 2tbsp. Before that I fed him Oxbow, he would eat almost all the pellets (~2tbsp). Recently I decided to switch him back to Oxbow because Sherwood pellets are expensive ($18 a bag!), and he super loves Oxbow pellets. What I've discovered though is he eats much less hay when he's eating Oxbow, so his diet is more pellets than hay. On Sherwood, he ate A LOT of his hay, and maybe 1/2 - 3/4 of his pellets...

Housing safety question...

Hi all,

My rascals Chicco & Chinno started peeing on their beautiful clay house (un-glazed, made by my daughter). Cleaning with vinegar:water solution didn't convince them it is not their wood-shaving potty dish but a house. No idea why had they started doing so more than a year after receiving the clay house, but I don't think I can convince them otherwise, so I had to remove it from their cage. They have now only a fleece-covered hanging tube, a hammock and a Kaytee Tropical Fiddle Sticks...

Hay and treats

So I've had my chinchillas since Christmas. I get on the site multiple times to get information in stuff that I need about my chinchillas. But everybody says something different. So I'm asking what kind of Timothy Hay do you recommend? What kind of treats can they or can't they have? I know that you can give them treats a couple times a week but it cannot be more than 10% of their diet. Another question I have is where do you guys buy your hay and your Apple sticks? Is it better to leave hay...

Side by side cage method

I’m doing this I’m being patient about it so I’m definitely not going to rush it, but how long should they be side by side before I let them both out for supervised playtime?

one has been with me one month longer. So much more established than my new one.

Need a Hide for 2 chinchillas

Hey all, I have 2 single huts but am wanting one that can fit both in case they want to sleep together. Can someone recommend one?

Behaviour during playtime

Recently my chin has started getting very ’argumentative’ during playtime. Playtime hasn’t changed for a long time but she’s been getting quick to anger when she doesn’t get her way. Something as simple as stopping her from chewing on my pants or picking her up to put her away has been leading to angry outbursts and spraying urine. What should I do?

My Apollo seems unhappy and antisocial

Greetings fellow chin owners,
On March 28th, 2020, I brought home 2 male chins, Apollo ( Black Velvet )and Damien ( poor boy didn't have a name when I got him, Ebony and Ivory Mosaic ). I had been researching chinchillas for months before I committed to them and after much debate, especially during COV-19, I decided to go get them anyways. They didn't have the best living environment, no fleece, no toys, or proper food requirements. Apollo was 8 months and Damien was 4 months. They have...

Please help: opinions on xray

Dear all,

Our 10-year old chinchilla had dental filings done a few months ago. I'd noticed her wiping her mouth and there was discharge from one eye. As far as I could tell, she was still eating normally. The vet said she has weird teeth on one side (he compared it to a 'moon landscape'). The other side was normal, she probably uses that side to eat. There was also a (small) spur, so he did the filings and tried to get the shape of the teeth as normal as possible. We had xrays done and...

New oxbow Critical Care Formula Issues

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone knew of alternatives to the oxbow critical care? I have fed this to my chinchillas for years when they are sick and have had no issues with it. I purchased some new packs and found oxbow has created a new formula. As it was new I wanted to check that my chins would take it when/if the time comes I would need to feed them with it. My chinchillas absolutely hate it and won’t go near it. They smell it and run as far away as possible. I’ve tried mixing...

Random Urination

Hey! The chinch randomly urinates during play time there appears to be no rhyme or reason. She is potty trained and will go in to use her potty when she is romping outside her cage during playtime. She went through a stretch where she was peeing on the couch after playing fo a little bit. We pick her up gently and say” no that’s bad”. Should we scold her differently ? I read some people put their animals nose in it and say Bad! Is that a good strategy ? She hasn’t peed outside in months...

Looking For a chinchilla in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick

Hey, so I really have my heart set on getting a chinchilla but it seems to be nearly impossible to find one for sale in my province or the nearby ones. I tried replying to a few ads i saw on google for Nova Scotia but they were all really old ads that never got taken down and didnt have a post date so thats been a bit discouraging. So I was wondering if anybody knew of or had a chinchilla for sale or a breeder that would be in either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. If they come with a cage and...

Sick Chinchilla?

Hi there!

I have a 2 year old chinny who’s been showing some concerning characteristics. When he breathes you can hear every in and out breath and seems like his chest is expanding more than normal. He sounds really clogged up in his nose and often when playing he takes little breaks to catch his breath. It sounds just like he has a cold and it’s been this way for weeks now. The only thing is he’s still eating like normal and plays just as hard as normal. He does however sometimes go out to...
