Chin cage feedback

I have had Roo for about a year now and her cage went from a very simple critter nation with just a few toys and 1 hut to what I have now. There are several ledges with ALOT if toys and several huts as well. I only want the best for her and want to create the best environment. I have contemplated if their are too many toys in their, as I have taken a few out due to the thought. She gets out to explore Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday due to scheduling. If you can see anything wrong or I...

Constipation Remedies?

So one of my chins might have constipation, and someone suggested I feed him some dried papaya or a raisin or two. I'd like a second opinion on this, as I'm worried about the sugar content. Does anyone also suggest the papaya or raisin method, or is there other solution? Any tips is greatly appreciated.

Please help

So I got my chin before Christmas of 2019 and by now I think she’s used to all the new sounds, smells, etc. but when I try to get her out of the cage she runs and when I catch her she bites me, and I know I’m not squeezing her but she just don’t like me to touch her. So I block off the bed so she cant go under because I can’t catch her when she goes under there, and I open the cage and just sit on the floor doing whatever and she comes out and runs around but when I move she runs back to the...

Vet Recommendation Help!

I need help finding an exotic vet that sees chinchillas in Spring, Tx or Houston, Tx area.

Thank you!

Alarming Droppings

One of my chins has been having some very small poops the past 6-12-ish hours. He's eating normally, not sure if he's acting normally as he's a naturally timid chinchilla and tends to stay in huts a lot. He's not totally reclusive though. I checked in a hut that he stayed in for about five minutes and I found three very small droppings, one dropping that was like 2 of the very small droppings together, and one dropping that was closer to being a healthy poop but a tad rougher-looking, not as...

Painful bloat/gas + GI blockage, but still pooping?

Hi all! I have a 6 year old boy named Pikachu. Before I start, I want to say that Pikachu did see the exotic vet today and has another appointment first thing in the morning. I'm just looking for some additional insight before we go back tomorrow.

This morning around 7AM I saw Pikachu acting 100% normal as usual while I got ready for work. Around 3PM, I went to see him and noticed he was laying half in, half out of his little hideaway which is on the highest level of his cage. His back half...

Is It Worth It?

I'm contemplating if litter training my two boys is really worth it. They have a level with ceramic tile and a level with a fleece liner. They don't really pee in one place, although on the fleece liner level they pee all around the pan but not directly in it. On the tile it's pretty much random, some around the pan like on the fleece. The spots they pee in doesn't seem to be in areas where it wouldn't seep through the cracks between the tiles. I also plan to take the tiles out weekly to...

Chinchilla is lethargic

Hey guys! So my chinchilla Roxy started acting “lazy” about 2 days ago. At first I thought my room might’ve been overheating and that’s why she’s less active. However, it didn’t stop there : her droppings started getting smaller, hamster size or tiny balls even. Today I’ve decided to take her to the vet and noticed she had white discharge on her lady parts. The vet prescribed antibiotics, enrofloxacin, and critical care food. After the appointment she ate a whole syringe worth of the mixture...

The New Cage

Because of the wonderful 12 donors and 38 sharers on a campaign I hosted to raise money for my rescue chins' much-needed new enclosure, they now have a hugely upgraded cage that was finished today. If you have any questions about the stuff inside, where to get it, etc. feel free to message me. I forgot to open the doors to the first level, but basically inside is just a Bass Equipment pan with tile cut to size inside of it, a hidey house, ChinSpin, hay manger, and all the other stuff that's...

Chin with labored breathing, not getting better with antibiotics. Thoughts?

I have a male chinchilla named Malfoy who is around 9 years old. Back in December, he started getting a white discharge in the corner of one of his eyes, and then the other eye as well. He then started to have labored breathing and congestion, so I took him to an exotic vet. The vet said his lungs sounded good and thought it might be an upper respiratory infection. For the next 10 days I gave him an antibiotic and eye drops, and he got much better. Had a followup vet appointment and...

Hi All!
Don't have need for a vet at the moment, but would like my boys to be registered with a reputable one in case they ever need to go. Does anyone have any recommendations -- preferably in Queens, NYC? Thanks in advance!

Has anyone tried Sherwood chinchilla pellets? Chin diarrhea

I noticed tonight while my chin was out running around that she has diarrhea. Her butt area was stained with poo- I cleaned her up as best I could. I looked into her cage and saw only a couple spots where there was actual diarrhea. The only thing that has changed is me giving her a whole treat versus a quarter of a treat. I’ve been giving her a whole one for about a week. I read that might be a factor. She’s been drinking and eating normally. I gave her a lot more Timothy hay tonight. Do I...

Hay Rack

So, the hay holder my boys currently have is alright, but I'm a tad skeptical about what type of wood it really is. (Got it off Amazon, supplier doesn't really say exactly what type of wood it is.) The major pro about it is that it has a lid, which I like a lot because it stops my chins from wanting to hop inside or poop inside of the rack and onto the hay. But, I still want a new hay rack. I have one in mind, it's good quality and is made from KD pine. But the only flaw is that it doesn't...

Help! bald patch on tail

Five days ago I noticed a long and narrow (0.4cm x 2.5cm) bald strip on top of my rescue boy's tail. I had him for two years and sometimes in January and February he does a bit of barbering on his haunches but it is always a minute patch and a very superficial one at that. I may be wrong but believe the one in the tail was also caused by barbering because we got a new neighbour upstairs who stomps around like a bipedal water buffalo and we are all under stress. At playtime he stands to...

HELP! My chin has breathing problems

So I have a 5 year old chinchilla called Boo. Her cage mate Chinney sadly passed away Last October from upper respiratory tract infection. She was 12. Later on boo started to breathe strangely too and became a bit breathless so I took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotics and mucolytic medication. Her symptoms subsided so I thought everything was fine until recently.

Abdominal Hernia

Hi, has anyone had a chin who needed abdominal hernia surgery? Wally's hernia has moved upward pressing against his lungs and heart. The vet told me he shows signs of slight difficulty breathing. They are not sure how long he has had this and if the fat has attached to his lungs then they would not be able to fix his hernia but they will not know until they open him up. I asked if he did not get the surgery what would happen she told me he could live a long life like this or not. They do not...

Hay Shortage

So, worst case scenario, I run out of hay before pay day (in two days, then I can buy more hay, and I'm pretty sure I'll have enough to last my boys 4 days or so, but still). The hay I'm running out of is their main hay, 2nd cutting timothy. They went through a 10 pound box in three months, not sure if that's normal hay consumage or not, but then again they are wasteful balls of fluff and I tend to toss half of the hay that's in the holder as it gets tossed on the cage floor and peed on...

Chinnie Lip.. Thing?

The past month or so I've realized one of my chinnies has small black areas on the lower part of his mouth. It looks like his inner lip, almost? Sometimes it's more visible than others. His brother doesn't have it. 20200122_164402.jpg20200122_164349.jpg

Cage Height

I'd love to have three FN units stacked at some point, but the ceiling of my chin area is too low so I have to have two. I would plan on getting the add-on unit once I move, which would be multiple years from now, but I'm worried if I'd be able to clean it properly with my height. Is a triple story FN suitable for someone who's 5'7, or would I have to stick with the double unit?

Bars of FN

In two weeks or so my two boys will be getting an entirely new cage. It'll be a double Ferret Nation, but I know that the bars of CN and FN can be difficult to clean and get the dust out. Does anyone know any tips and tricks for cleaning the bars, cage corners, etc. of a Ferret Nation for deep cleaning purposes?

Can I use oatmeal as glue?

I have a large stockpile of sticks my chin has eaten the bark off of.

I'm trying to figure out a way I can build things with these twigs.
I had the thought that taking cooked oatmeal, blending & thinning it with water to turn it into an edible glue. ???
Could this encourage my chin to eat too much wood and/or oats?

Any suggestions for ways to create my own "edible" glue or mortar for hideouts, bridges, chew toys, and tunnels?

Litter Pan

My boys have three glass Pyrex storage dishes filled with aspen shavings as litter pans. But, even when I replace the dirty shavings daily and wash them out weekly, some of the urine/bedding residue sticks to the pan and refuses to come off even with scrubbing with hot water and soap, unless I vigorously scrape it with a scraping tool. It works, but it takes a lot of effort and time. I don't really mind scraping the pans, but is it really necessary to scrape off the residue if I already...

Chinchilla bald patch above eye?

Hi all

My chinchilla was born in 2013 June (so about 7 years young).

Recently we noticed her right eye, the fur around it seemed "poofy", like she messed it up.

Today when we were playing with her, we noticed that same eye seems to have developed a bald patch? This developed over the past month or two

Her diet consists of oxbox pellets, water, lots of hay and the odd oxbow treat. This is the same diet she's had since we first got her.

Her energy levels are fine, just as spunky as...

Water Bottle Nozzle

My boys have two water bottles. Last week while doing the deep clean I decided to try something different and soak the nozzles in a 60/40 vinegar and water mix for about 5-10 minutes, do a light scrub with the cleaning brush around the nozzle and such, and then finally rinsing with water. Is this cleaning method sufficient, or would I have to go back to using a little bit of dish soap and scrubbing the nozzle by hand and rinsing very well afterwards?

Rehoming Chinchilla

Hi Everyone!

I had to make the difficult decision to rehome my chinchilla. She is about 6 years old and the sweetest girl. She will come with all supplies and her critter nation cage (2 levels). I am charging a rehoming fee of $200 (price negotiable, don't care about the money just want her to go to a good home). I am in the Philly area but willing to travel for the right person.

Cleaning Under Liners

In two weeks or so my boys will be getting a completely new cage. It'll come with a fleece liner to cover the 2nd floor pan. When doing weekly cleaning and changing the liner, is using Clorox wipes on the pan safe if it'll be completely covered by the liner, or would the 50/50 vinegar and water solution work just as well?

Ringworm ?

Hi, I just wanted an opinion on this little bald under the base of my chins tail. I actually noticed it the first day I got her which was Saturday, and didn’t think much of it until I went into more depth of research about Chins and ring worm. Does this look like ringworm ? It’s not inflamed out anything. The skin looks a little dry but that is about it. Is it possibly it could be from her bitting/fur chewing in her original home ? Any help will be valuable, thank you so much.

Feeding with 2...

So was just wondering how do people with 2 chins feed them but also make sure they are both eating healthy amounts... Should I feed them in different points of the cage? Or do I just let them eat out of each others bowls... They happily sit together and share 1 bowl

Over cleaning?

So, turns out some steps of my weekly cleaning is some chin owner's monthly deep cleaning. I'm already getting used to the weekly cleaning, and I'm not overworking myself physically or mentally, but for my two boys' sake, is this cleaning method okay? Or should I cut back on the cleaning a bit? Vinegar and water is the only cleaning solution I use. Also, I clean their Critter Nation in sections. So I block them off on the first level and deep clean the second level, and then let them go up...

How to encourage Chinchilla to eat more hay?

I adopted a Chinchilla about a month ago, and he definitely has a preference for pellets over hay (probably how he got his molar spurs which had to be removed a few weeks ago).

How do I get him more interested in hay? I now have several varieties of it, but he still has a preference for pellets. I can cut the amount of pellets available but I don't want him to go hungry... I've tried stuffing the hay into a jar of oats to have them smell like oats, because he loooves oats, but he wouldn't...

Boxed coconut water is a bad idea?

In my city it is not easy to find coconut. yesterday I found a box of organic coconut water with 1% fructose (it is the sugar found in fruit, it was in the box for standardization) and even less natural preservative (ascorbic acid, an important vitamin for chinchillas). Still, would it be a bad idea to give boxed coconut water to chinchillas?

Unknown Blood Spotting

I'm terrified. While I was deep cleaning my chin cage, I found some blood on top of their hay feeder. There's no signs that they fought, they still cuddle, and no fur slip. I'm not sure when exactly the blood happened, but somewhere in the past 1215788997816418338882320738112126.jpg hours. They're acting normally too. They're going to the Vet in 4 weeks. Can it wait that long, or do they need to be seen now? No other blood has been spotted thus far.

My boys

So I got my second chin today 🎉 and with the help of the breeder, they are already together (I know this isn't advised) but they are so happy together and I was so worried they wouldn't get on! I just looked over to see them grooming each other already! :)

Not running on wheel anymore

We got our hedgie 4 months ago and she is about 8 months old. She loved her wheel from the day we got her. We have her in a side by side tub set up with her place she likes to sleep and burrow on one side and her wheel food and water in the other tub and a pvc tube between.

About two weeks ago she stopped running on her wheel at night altogether. She is still eating and drinking and poops normal, no green stools. We get her out to roam in a large enclosure every evening. She eats 1...

Toy Parts

Could chin toy parts (used for making custom hanging toys and such) be used as simple toss/floor toys? I'd rather buy pre-made hanging toys, but if I find some cheap toy parts I'd be willing to toss some in my boys' cage from time to time.

Giving away chinchilla wheel

Hello, I posted this in the cages section and didn't get any replies so I thought I'd repost it here. My chinchilla sadly passed after 16 years and I wanted to give away her wheel. It's one of the expensive ones and it's still in great shape. I just wanted some other chins to have as much fun as mine did on it. I'm not asking for any money other than the cost of shipping. If you want it please let me know!

Feet

I noticed that both of my boys' feet (I mainly looked at the back feet, not entirely sure about their front paws) aren't fully pink. They have some dark gray areas as well. Is this normal? They're going to the vet in about 4 weeks if it needs to be checked out.

Question about wooden ledges for cage

My 8 year old chin loves doing parkour off the walls of his cage. I recently came across a wooden ledge in the pet store in the bird section and bought it for my chin to try out. However, it did not specify what type of wood it was. It is by a & e cage company and says it's great for chinchillas, but as you all know, this may not always be true. I have attached a link to the ledge here: http://www.aecageco.com/Products/New-Products/NB007-Corner-Shelf-Small.html

Colour vs personality

This is probably a dumb question but here I go.....

I will have a choice of colours when I come to chose my new chin and I was wondering if different colours have different personality traits.

I have owned hamsters now for over 6 years and I have noticed a pattern with the colours and personalities. For example out of the hamsters I have had: cinnamons are laid back, banded hamsters are placid, tortoiseshells are naughty and my grey was very clever. Not to mention the dwarf hamsters (I...

TOV??

This little girl has developed this black mask on her as she has grown
and I started to wonder if she is possible TOV.

Her great grand sire is BV, but I know one of her parents needs to be TOV to pass it to her.
Her mom is a Het Ebony and dad is a White Ebony....the BV is on moms side.

Any thoughts??

Difference between Mosaic and white ebony?

I didn't see a color forum started yet, and I have been trying to find an answer on different breeder sites, but can't seem to. From what I'm understanding, the only real difference is that a white ebony carries ebony gene. I don't see a significant appearance difference but please correct me if I'm wrong! Is there any really trait differences between the two? Or does one just carry the ebony gene? Thanks in advanced!

NURSING MOMMA CHIN WITH DIARRHEA PLEASE HELP!?

Hi everyone, so today my chin randomly got diarrhea and I have no idea what to do. I've looked through all the threads with the same kind of stories, but Im still kind of unsure what I'm dealing with here. I took a pic of her poos, they're runny/soft and mushy and she's tracking it when she steps in it. They're a light brown color. No weird smell that I can detect. And she's never had this before. She's still acting completely normal. I checked her eyes and nose, neither are runny or...

Oh noooo dust everywhere

I fell asleep and mistakenly forgot the dust bath was in my Chins cage. I woke up this morning to dust all around the cage... did I overexposed my chins to dust? Will they experience dry fur? Is there anything I should do?

Bertie - A QUESTION

So mentioned in a previous thread took Bertie to the vets XMAS eve, vet could see food lodged/wedged in gum causing irritation, this was removed. Was given Baytril things returned to normal.

Cutting to the chase, the baytril prevented him from eating. Once this ceased we had a good XMAS period. Yesterday i noticed the drooling had sadly returned so I booked to see the vet again. He had a full dental/oral and x-ray. A Spur was found, the "theory" is the wedged food may has caused some...

A PSA To New Chin Owners..

So, I decided to check up on my chins late at night. I was certainly shocked to find out that BOTH of them had escaped their cage! Apparently one of their cage doors wasn't fully shut, so when they were hopping around inside it swung open. It was obvious that they took dust baths, and then explored the play area. Luckily for me, I had the area chin-proofed (chin-proofed with supervision, as there was still plastic inside the area (litter scoop, open hay bag, etc. but none of them really mess...

Tiling Question Again

Alright, I think I finally figured out my plan. Just because I'm a very worrisome chin owner, and I'm not sure how my boys would act around grouting, I won't be grouting my tiles. I'll just make sure they have a really tight fit in the Bass Equipment pan. That also means I won't be using liquid nails or anything to adhere the tiles to the pan, because I'd be taking them out and cleaning them weekly just to make sure any potential urine leakage doesn't sit under the tile for a long amount of...

Am I being impatient?

I have a year+ old female and a 9 month old male who have been together since he was about 3 months old. My female is pretty dominant so introducing them took some time, but now they eat and sleep together. I know male chinchillas sexually mature faster than females, and I was hoping by now they would have TRIED to breed. But I have not heard them (they are in my room), noticed any plugs or excessive hair in cage, nothing that would lead me to believe they have bred. I am constantly rubbing...

brown velvet (tov beige) or hetero beige?

Hello.
First of all I'm sorry for my english.
I have three chinchillas.
black velvet female + beige homozygous.
I have a problem to identify their daughter.
I always thought that from this colors will always born brown velvet (tov beige), because many sources say so (in my country). Chin color mutations

I know it's difficult/impossible to tell what mutations a chin is from look alone, but was wondering if anyone had some guesses as to this female I got last night. She's originally from someone who breeds, but the last owner that I got her from can't remember the breeder or what mutation she is.

Fur mats

Hello all,

My one chinchilla gets these mats on her one hip. They get a dust bath every night, and the dust is not in their cages 24/7. Is there anything I can do to prevent this or is this just something that happens? And is it hurting her in any way? These probably sound silly-- but hey, I wanna make sure she's okay! :)
Anything helps!

Hi guys just wondering if these little black dots on my chins ears are just a coloration? Or some kind of sign that hes sick? I havent really looked at his ears too much since ive gotten him (cuz hes usually running too fast to look) so i cant remember if ive seen them on him before or if theyre new. Chins ATE Paper Towel!

So, last night I apparently left a dry paper towel somewhere while I was cleaning my boys' cage. I couldn't find it, and it seemed like it completely disappeared. But, this afternoon, I saw it in their cage! It had urine on it, and pieces of it were missing. About 80% of it was still in-tact, and it was only a single sheet. I'm not sure if only one got to it, or both of them did. I feel extremely guilty.

Is there anything I should watch out for? Is this worth a trip to the vet? What...

Sticks

Are multiple types of sticks necessary for chins? The four different stick types (the ones my boys prefer) that would last them a decent amount of time can get pricey. They both love apple sticks and they're cheaper. ($7 for 10 ounces, meanwhile the multiple sticks are $18, 3 or so ounces for each stick type) If I give them two apple sticks daily (one for each of them), would that be okay? Or is multiple types a must?

Chin passed, giving away wheel

Hello all, sadly my chinchilla suki died after 16 years. I know these wheels are very expensive and that they are the ones highly recommended for them, so instead of throwing it out I wanted to pass it on, and since I found it recommended here I figured one of you all would like/need it. Mine just came home after getting molar spurs ground down. The vet said he would be really lethargic for 12 hours or so. Right now he's hiding in his hut and has been making weird rhythmic sounds that might be linked to his breathing, or teeth grinding? It sounds like a low croak, and he makes it almost every second. I have no idea what it is.. occasionally there'll be a little louder squeak/croak. The vet closed just as I called...

Bonding chins?

So, I have one fluffy boy currently but am thinking about maybe getting another... What are tips and tricks with helping chinchillas bond? Also is there anyway to know if a chinchilla will likely not bond? Anything about bonding would help!
