Likely teeth problems with chin

Hi all, we think our chinchilla has teeth problems. She's picking up pellets, gnawing on them a little bit and throwing them aside. She's lost a lot of weight.

We didn't realize what was happening because she's also been throwing her food out of her bowl, because she's like that. She's still pooping and drinking water.

Right at this second she's still bright eyed, alert, grooming, bathing, bouncing and chewing toys. We picked up some critical care from the pet store and we're going to...

Dust Baths

My two chins get a dust bath twice a week. However, one of them is currently in the early healing process of a cracked and previously bleeding heel. I gave him a dust bath yesterday and applied Bag Balm on the heel about 5 minutes afterwards, but today I saw a small amount of blood where he normally rests. Definitely not as much as when the foot firstly cracked though. I sprayed a little antiseptic wound wash on both back feet to be safe and applied Bag Balm. But, now I'm stuck. I don't want...

Chinchillas and TV volume

I'm planning on getting a pair of chinchillas either from a good previous owner or breeder and want to keep them in my living room. But I'm worried that the TV will stress them out when I'm watching an action movie or if a scene is suddenly loud. The speakers would be facing away from their cage, and their cage would be around 2-2.4m away from the speakers in a little gap between two chimneys. Can't keep them anywhere else as it will either be too quiet for them or too in the sun. Would they...

Chins Both Losing Weight

Ever since I got my chins, they've been losing weight. Due to the timing of their vet visits, I noticed that they lost a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 55 grams per month. When I first had them they weighed somewhere in the 700 gram range, probably above 720 but under 780. That was in the beginning of November. Then they just kept dropping grams from there. The first month wasn't too bad though, maybe a 10-20 gram drop. At the vet today, one of them weighed 722 grams, and the other weighed...

Prevue 7500 Cat Cage for chinchilla

I've been looking for a replacement cage for my chinchilla, Ebenezer, and I stumbled upon the Prevue 7500 cat cage. It seems to have everything I'm looking for:
-VERY spacious
-Entrance at ground level so Ebenezer can hop in and out as he pleases during playtime
-Solid rust-resistant construction with replaceable shelving (I plan on buying 3 more shelves to make it 5 levels)
-On wheels so I can easily roll the cage into another room if Ebby makes a racket in the middle of the night

New owner-got some questions!

Hello everyone!

I am a new Hedgehog owner, super excited and already in love. He doesn’t have a name yet (Hermes, Neptune, Berry are my top three choices). He’s 6-8 weeks old. I have several questions and concerns!

I will start this off with everything I have for him.

I have him in a storage bin lined with fleece. And a fleece snuggle sack he loves to go in. I also have a little fleece pineapple house that he tips over and hides under. I have a bowl of food (given by the breeder) and a...

Chinnie not eating his pellets

Hello,
I noticed a couple days ago my chinnie hasn't been eating as much pellets as he typically does. Usually I give him 1-2 tbs daily, and he hasn't been touching it much lately. He'll take a few nibbles from it but the bowl is never empty the next morning like it usually is. However, he's been eating his hay, chewing on his toys, and drinking fine! I've cut all treats from his diet for three days now. Here's his diet for the past week or so:
Oxbow Essentials pellets
Oxbow timothy hay...

Dental checks and anesthesia

Hello!

Just here looking for advice on things to watch consider/options

I was playing with my chins last night when I noticed one of Kumo's incisor teeth was fairly white. The tooth right beside it was a nice, healthy orange so it was quite a contrast. He's presented discoloration on this particular tooth years ago, he had a dental and thankfully it turned out to be nothing. Since chins don't usually show their teeth I don't know if this is a recent occurrence or if it's the same...

Treatment

So somehow I thought yesterday was Tuesday and today was the vet appointment for my chin's foot. This means I have to wait another 24 hours for him to be seen, which is fine since he isn't bleeding anymore and he's acting normally. I was just wondering what I should do in the meantime. I applied Bag Balm last night, so what should I do treatment-wise today? Should I repeat the wound washing treatment I did yesterday, or just apply Bag Balm?

Chin Cookie Recipe

It was my Chinnie's birthday, so I decided to make her some chin Cookies.
This is very simple and only requires a few ingredients that you already have on hand.
The whole idea of making this recipe not only it is fun and able to make your chin something by yourself, but it is also cheap. Because the ingredient are those that your chin already eats, this wont create an upset stomach.

The measurement in the recipe do not need to be exact and the recipe can change depend on what you have...

hello!!

after weeks of asking questions and preparing for his arrival, i can finally officially say hello to everyone and introduce my sweet boy; currently unnamed but affectionately referred to as Rat.. his previous owner bought him on a whim and had no idea how to care for a chin, so he sat in his cage 24/7 with minimal care or attention. he came home sunday and you could tell immediately all this little guy wanted was some love.. and some time outside his empty cage.. he's never been handled...

Over cleaning?

So, turns out some steps of my weekly cleaning is some chin owner's monthly deep cleaning. I'm already getting used to the weekly cleaning, and I'm not overworking myself physically or mentally, but for my two boys' sake, is this cleaning method okay? Or should I cut back on the cleaning a bit? Vinegar and water is the only cleaning solution I use. Also, I clean their Critter Nation in sections. So I block them off on the first level and deep clean the second level, and then let them go up...

Cracked, Bleeding Feet

Oh my goodness, I really can't get a break with these chins! I was doing a cage check this morning when I saw a pretty decent amount of blood splotches on one of my chins' ledges. After examinations, I saw that one of them had some dried blood on the bottom of his back foot, and some signs of cracking on the base (not much near the toes). I have an emergency kit, so what should I use to treat his foot and in what order? I don't want to make it worse. The stuff in the kit includes chin balm...

NURSING MOMMA CHIN WITH DIARRHEA PLEASE HELP!?

Hi everyone, so today my chin randomly got diarrhea and I have no idea what to do. I've looked through all the threads with the same kind of stories, but Im still kind of unsure what I'm dealing with here. I took a pic of her poos, they're runny/soft and mushy and she's tracking it when she steps in it. They're a light brown color. No weird smell that I can detect. And she's never had this before. She's still acting completely normal. I checked her eyes and nose, neither are runny or...

Chinchilla Penis Issues?

Today I walked in on my chinchilla, Beef Wellington, cleaning his penis. He is almost 2 years old. I noticed that his penis was swollen in two separate places. It looked like 2 bubbles. He was cleaning it for a little and it retracted back but I wanted to look at it again because my internet searches were yielding no results. I gave him his 'cuddle buddy' and let him hump it so I can see his penis again. When he finished and started to clean off again the bubbles were gone and his...

Best chinchilla pellets?

Hi. I'm a fairly new chinchilla owner as I got my chinchilla from a rescue in late September. Since he has gotten here I've fed him unlimited Timothy hay and "oxbow garden select" pellets. Recently I was reading on this site and found that a lot of people said that the garden select was bad for Chins. Can anyone tell me if they are bad or not? If so what are some good chinchilla pellets? I've heard of other oxbow pellets such as deluxe and essentials, as well as other brands such as...

Cleaning Heater

So, there's a wall heater in my chin room that I use on the lowest setting just to keep the humidity as low as I can during nighttime since I shut the dehumidifier off when I go to bed. However, I have no idea when it's been cleaned, definitely not in the past few years. As most heat-giving electronic things are, when cleaned and turned on again the heater will probably give off a burnt smell for a couple hours. I'm worried that my chins' health will be at risk because of this, but if I...

Pink Himalayan Salt Lamp

Long story short, I’m actually expecting a new chinnie friend in April. It was unexpected the way it happened but I truly felt the way it did happen was meant to be, and I’m extremely excited for him to get here. 🥰
I’m slowly getting everything I need for his arrival (I just ordered all of my fleece products and a new bottom pan for my Critter Nation), and was told by someone with a vet background In a chinchilla owners Facebook Group that I should remove all things with a scent out of my...

Chin eating, drinking, pooping, but lethargic

Hey all. My 9 year old chin has been acting depressed for almost 2 or 3 weeks. I recently took away his papaya treats and figured it was depression. He spends a lot of his time sleeping, but he used to come to the cage to say hi and now just stays in his bed. I have noticed cataracts on both his eyes now, instead of just the one. So maybe he is learning to adjust. I also recently switched to aspen bedding which I have removed and replaced with fleece. But I was worried he was allergic to the...

Eating loose fur

I couldn’t find anything from Google about it so I wanted to ask here. I’ve noticed any time my chin slips some fur she’ll end up eating it. Is this normal?

Behaviour during playtime

Recently my chin has started getting very ’argumentative’ during playtime. Playtime hasn’t changed for a long time but she’s been getting quick to anger when she doesn’t get her way. Something as simple as stopping her from chewing on my pants or picking her up to put her away has been leading to angry outbursts and spraying urine. What should I do?

Chinchilla and Parrot

Hi so I am planning on getting a Green Cheeked Conure pretty soon and I wanted to know if there would be any concerns with housing my chin and the GCC together. When I mean together I mean their cages will be in the same room and my GCC will be able to explore freely throughout the room. I know with dogs you have to be pretty careful and train them to be gentle since they have preditoral instincts but GCC's are pretty docile herbivores and relativity small for a parrot. Not sure if there is...

Wheel Removal

So, as some of you may have seen, one of my chins got a small scratch on the top of his back foot. It's doing okay, I think it's starting to scab over now. But today I saw some small blood streaks on the back of the wheel and on the wheel, mostly if not fully dried. I think it's from yesterday and maybe I just didn't see it because it was so small? I'm thinking when he runs on the wheel the wound has a chance of reopening. But, I'm not sure how his more active brother would feel about the...

Hay

What brand of hay do you guys feed your Chinchilla?

I have been feeding my chinchilla timothy hay since I got him as a baby, but he won't eat any hay in the past 6 months. I have tried different types of hay from Oxbow but still no luck. He tends to just play with it and throw it around.

I have to take him to the vet about every 2-3 months to get medicine to help him pass because of his lack of fiber.
The vet also says he has dental disease that he gets treated when necessary.

Brown Discharge Female Chin?

Hello! First Thread on here, but my little chinnie is experiencing a brown sticky discharge from her vagina. I’ve had her for years and this has only happened once a few years ago. Bald Belly Hedgie

Hey guys, I've had my hedghog for 5.5 years. She's an old lady now. I've noticed she's not eating as much and has lost weight. This could be due to tooth loss but I am unable to look at her teeth. I softened her food with water last night and she ate ALL of it (yay!) but last night I picked her up and noticed from her chin down to the middle of her stomach was completely bald. Think hairless cat bald. It really freaked me out...it's completely bald and now she just has skin on her belly...

Taming my chins

Hello everyone.
I'm sure this subject has popped-up in the past. I have two Chins. Got them when they were 3 months. Even then they would come on my lap for treats, but just hop away when I tried to touch them. It has only gotten worse. They are 18 months now, and I can't get close to them. Never mind holding them. I've only ever been gentle with them. Never forced them. I did have to grab the one for some medicine in the past. He went absolutely ballistic and squirmed like crazy

Foot Injury

While cleaning I saw a small blood spot on one of the wooden ledges in my chin cage. After examining each chin I noticed that one had a small blood spot on the top of his back foot. I didn't want to try and clean it off in case I removed a potential scab. There's no more blood to be seen, and the blood on his foot has since dried. Is this worth a vet visit, or is there stuff I can do at home? I'm assuming he might have scratched it a bit on something, causing the injury. Probably the side of...

Squish Bonding. Best Method Or Cruel?

As a disclaimer, I'm not trying to start any arguments, I'd just like to hear some opinions. On a chinchilla subreddit, a pretty heated argument went down about the squish method for bonding. As an example of how.. interesting it got, the person who supported squishing got around 6 upvotes, while the person who didn't got -3. I was included in that argument and my opinions were not taken very well.. I personally am against the squish method, as I find it cruel to make two chins bond with...

DIY Projects

I'm planning on making two things for my chins as it's cheaper than buying them. A large climbing toy for outside of cage playtime, and a hidey house. I already have KD pine, so does anyone know what to use to attach the wood together? I saw wood glue being mentioned in someone's house construction, is that safe? Is so, could I get a link to a good wood glue?

Happy Monday all 🙂

My chin has a chew-proof cage (the mansion aka "ferret" cage lol). But, it's the outside frame so he can't escape. The shelivng and ramps/slides are plastic. He's about 7, and after year 4ish of replacing the cage (it was the same price/cheaper than finding the shelving and such) a third time, which as you all know costs as much as he did, I gave up since he's never had any health issues.
He can have all the toys in the world to chew, his vitamin C tab, his hay, food, but...

Is it normal to not hear anything from your chinchilla?
I have had mine for close to a year already and I’ve never heard a sound coming from her. At first I thought I was normal and that she will open up once she gets comfortable. Though she is comfortable around me I’ve never heard her make any noise. I really hope this is somewhat normal in a way. A Couple Random Questions

So, I apologize if this sounds dumb, but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced chins acting the way my two do, or if it's normal. During playtime they hop out of the cage (they have full access in and out during playtime). But I doubt it even lasts 30 minutes. One of them jumps back in after 5-10 minutes. He may go back out, but not for very long. The other stays out longer, which is surprising because he's the timid chin. He probably lasts about 15-20 minutes. It just seems like a...

I got a baby male chin two weeks ago (he's about 2 months old). Since I got him from the breeder, he has had soft stool. It has no odor, it's just a little soft and sometimes sticks to surfaces (he manages never to get any stuck in his fur or anything). I'm not sure if this is urgent tbh!

Hi everyone. I've literally made myself sick worrying about this today, so I'm hoping I'm just far too attached to my chin and dramatic and that this doesn't likely need a vet trip. Pardon the word vomit, but as I said, I'm panicking. Last night, I was closing Sam's cage door, and I didn't realize his paw was still in the idk what you'd call it you know, corner area. Cleaning Fleece

I love my fleece liners, but the only con is that it's a pain to get the aspen shavings off if my chins scattered them out of the litter pan. I only have a brush and dust pan set at the moment, so that doesn't help much. I would take the liner off and shake the shavings off, but it's a hassle because I have unscented potty training pads inside the liner for extra absorbency (the liner is a pillowcase style), so shaking the liner would mess the pads all up. I have a shop vacuum as well, but...

Blood scare / inspection

So I had a bit of a fright several days ago when I saw a good amount of blood all over several of my 2 year old chin Gandalf's shelves, and immediately took steps to take him to the vet. However, he appeared in great spirits, was energetic, happily eating, peeing & pooping normally, and showed no signs that any of his paws / feet were tender or hurting him.

Hello!

I've posted a few times already - mostly first time chinnie owner freaking-out kind of questions - so I figure I should intro myself -

Hi! My name is Katy and I adopted a gray standard ~3y/o male chinnie, named Mr. B, in December. He was named Mr. Bigglesworth by the adoption agency, hence the B. Altho now I say the B is short for balls because Mr. B has these pink dangly balls (I don't know why they are that way but he seems fine and the vet has not remarked on them haha)!

Hello!

Should I get a dehumidifier?

I live in Portland, OR, and it gets kinda humid in the winter (70-80%!) but only around 60% in the summer, so I was wondering if I should get a dehumidifier for my chin? I haven't had him during the summer yet so it'll be a test. He seems fine with the higher winter humidity at the moment. The temp around his cage is usually around ~65F.

I have an window A/C unit and am wondering if that'll be enough combined with a ceiling fan set on low to get the air moving? Summers can get pretty hot...

Need to rehome a sweet boy near Philly

I have a standard gray 10 year old boy chinchilla named Rocket. Love him dearly and had him since he was a baby but no longer have the time to give him that he deserves. He originally had a brother who died at 6 years old. I didnt want him to be alone so i adopted a retired breeding chin for him. They lived in cages side by side but he just passed away and now Rocket is all alone. I had to move him to my basement so i could start a home business in the room he occupied upstairs. He...

What is normal weight gain or loss in a chin?

I currently have a chin that is about 7 years old that has lost some weight in the past two weeks.

What had happened was that my chin weighed in at about 585 grams, then we noticed she had a growth on her eye. This led to us bringing her to the vet the next day, which they diagnosed it as an abcess and sent us home with metacam and baytril.

We noticed an immediate drop in her appetite and after discussing with the vet agreed to stop the medication until her appetite comes back.

Giant Chinchillas

What are some of the largest chinchillas you've seen or owned? I really like hefty chinchillas. Here are a couple of mine to get things started. A pink white female bred here she's not a year old yet and 800g. The second pic is a black velvet v/c bred here as well. She's around 1000g

chinchilla safe yarn?

hello everyone! first, i just want to thank you for all the helpful info on this site for a new chinchilla owner, it relieved so much of the stress ive been feeling lately. im in the process of taking in a chin that an acquaintance bought without doing any research on chinchillas at all (insane, i know) and now cannot take care of. he is currently still in her care and, unfortunately, right now has the bare minimum to keep him alive. while im impatiently waiting until i can get him out of...

Laboured breathing 😔, please help!!

So I have a 5 year old chinchilla called Boo. Her cage mate Chinney sadly passed away Last October from upper respiratory tract infection. She was 12. Later on boo started to breathe strangely too and became a bit breathless so I took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotics and mucolytic medication. Her symptoms subsided so I thought everything was fine until recently.
Boo is now breathing heavily and her breathing problem worsens when she exercises And takes dust baths. We put her in...
