Desperate in Bakersfield, CA

UGH!!!! :banghead: The following was posted on one of my local homeschooling FB groups. I have responded with some info for her and telling anyone who is considering taking these animals that they are high maintenance with strict dietary, housing and exercise needs and that I would be more than happy to answer any questions. I cannot take these chinchillas in though. Was hoping maybe there was someone on the forum that could lead us in the right direction to get these chinnies into a good place.

"Hi. I know this is random. My husband thought he'd surprise me one day with a couple chinchillas. He bought them from a breeder. I never could hold the little monsters. Plus I just don't have the time or patience to work with them to get them tame. They are 4 month old sisters. One is dark grey and the other light grey. I'm looking to rehome them. I don't know what to do with them. I contacted the guy we got them from numerous times and he refuses to take them back. If anyone is interested they can have them. My husband wants to keep the cage is the only thing. I just want a family who could have the time for them since I don't. They are very cute and friendly but I can't tame them enough to hold or pet them."

Spurs?

If a chin has tooth spurs once are they prone to getting them again? Ferdinand is ignoring his hay. I'd hoped he would start actually eating it since he had been picking at it after weaning off cc, but nope.

The vet had suggested bringing him back in to try a filing if he kept losing weight (which thank goodness he hasn't), but I'm wondering if he maybe should go back and give it a try. His weight is stable but not as high as he was before and he is eating pellets. He did have spurs before which were filed over a year ago, could they have come back?

He's generally picky with his hay, preferring it fresh from a brand new bag- and when I say fresh, I mean the first feeding with a new bag he (when he will touch his hay) chow down most of it right away. The second feeding from the exact same bag, isn't anywhere near as excited about!

Speaking of shows are there any Southeast this year

Tiffany or whom ever might know what are the closest shows to NC this year? Checked main sites but couldn't seem to find anything for down this way? I'm hoping for a SC maybe....

My Cages

Chinchilla biting tail stump

My rescue chinchilla Wilson won't stop chewing his tail stump and I'm running out of ideas what to do. I've had him several months now and he came with his tail amputated as he got in a fight with another chinny which severely damaged his tail. It had all healed nicely but the last few weeks he's has been chewing it. I have got some hibiscrub and cream from the vet and been keeping it clean. I have also been putting a tiny sock like bandage on it but he's now realised he can chew this off and start chewing his tail again. Today he has chewed it so bad I just don't know what to do anymore. Everytime it starts to heal he chews it and were back to square one. He has plenty to do and is out several hours each night. The last 3 days he'd not touched it but then today he's made a right mess of it again

Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I'm all out of ideas.

Thanks

Chinchilla Question

So I got a 7 year old chinchilla from a friend a few months back and originally she gave me a everything I needed for him including a brand new cage. I thought the cage was kind of small so when I got the money together about a month after I got him I bought a brand new critter nation cage. Ever since I got this cage he doesn't really want to come out of it. I want to take him out for play time in the hall but he will just go sit in the corner so I can't take him out or run away ( I don't want to chase him because I don't want to scare him). He used to be good with me scratching him but he seems to be more annoyed with me touching him now... any suggestions on how I can get him to warm up to me again? I thought I had been making strides before because he would always come up to me but I seem to be going backwards with him now?

Is Manna Pro a good feed for my chinchilla

Need a railroad from Sacramento to LA/Riverside.

Hi, everyone. I am in need of a railroad from Sacramento to either the LA area or to Riverside, CA sometime during the next month. The chinchilla is coming from Jessica Olson and we already have transportation from her home to Sacramento. I am willing to pay for gas. If you can help, please let either Jessica or me know.

Thanks,

Possible Amputation

The rescue took in a young chin today who has a terrible leg injury. What is the youngest age a chin has had a successful amputation? His leg, the front one, just drags behind him. It has been left this way for an unknown length of time.

I have a vet appointment first thing. I will try to get some pics up.

Close call!

I had a close call regarding my girls. I came home from work and found the room at 73 and rising. Chimi's ears were warm and Lilly was laying on her side on her chinchiller. I panicked and checked the air conditioner and it seemed to have just take a poop on me. I do have a more powerful spare but that's in the room my littlest is being quarantined. I ran out of the room and went straight to the nearest appliance store and bought a portable air conditioner. The entire time I'm thinking "I'm going to come home to two dead chins...". Luckily they were okay and the installation went smoothly though Chimi did not like went we turned the old conditioner off because she liked the white noise.

Ugh! I hate summer!

Quarantine is almost up...

Momo's quarantine is almost up. Technically it's done on Monday, but would it be alright to introduce them on Sunday?

Also... What is the best way to go about this? I've read multiple things on introducing them but I wanted to check here anyway.

Should I start with playtime? Or should I put them in a carrier together? Any opinions would be awesome. :D

2yr old male Chinchilla needs a new home (NYC)

Sadly, I am moving out of the country, and will need someone to take care of my chinchilla.

He is a 2 year old standard grey (I've had him since he was about 6mo old) with a white belly and hasn't had any health problems. He is very special to me and I am really hoping someone who currently has a chinchilla would adopt him, as he has grown up just by himself, and it would be great if he could have friends.

Please PM me if you are interested and we can set up an interview.

Safe wire for cage building

There are so many types of wire and i'd like to make sure whatever wire i get is chinchilla safe, could you all tell me some safe wire i'm going to be going to lowes for my cage building stuff. :bliss:

Chilly is so happy!!

I got the fleece from Fleece for Furries. I can't thank her enough. :)

I love it♥ and obviously Chilly does too. :D

I still have another tube, but I am unsure where to put it. I thought I'd let that sit until both my chins share the cage. Momo's quarantine should be over on sunday, so I can't wait!

Does anyone have any opinions on the cage? I rearranged as best as I could, and I'm making a hay pouch as soon as I can. He really loves sitting on top of his wooden house(between the above level) so I don't want to move that... So that limits how I can use things.

So any suggestions?

Signs of aggression

Hello,

I enjoy learning about animal behavior.

Each animal has their own unique way of communicating with one another, I was just wondering if someone could provide a list of signs of aggression as I plan to place two chins together I would like to make sure I don't look over any possible signs of aggression.

For example, you can tell if a horse is angry if they pin their ears back. Dogs if their fur is raised or teeth bared or certain stances, certain ways they hold their tail, etc.

I already know some like biting or aggressive. Also, they will both be males so any male specific aggression signs?

Thanks!

Ciprofloxacin for a chin kit?

I had a chin baby to the vet today for a crusty eye. She got his eye open and a lot of pus came out. I feel so bad for the little guy :( anyway, she said it was infected and said that she would prescribe an eye drop antibiotic to treat him. She warned though that chins do not tolerate most antibiotics well, and because he's just a baby it could be risky. She said though that it had to be treated, there really isn't a choice. She prescribed ciprofloxacin, 2 drops a day and wants to see him again on Monday. She also said I should clean his eye first. Is this safe to use on him? I'm very worried about him. Has anyone used it with success?

Fleece set

Got my Aayla a super cute fleece set made, from fleece for furries! She is loving it. Two fleece liners, a shelf liner, tube, hammock, house and hay bag. :) Also received my order from TJs chin supplies. Lots of wood chews, toys and two shelves.

Chin "sits/stands" up in cage

So I've been noticing my chin started to do this thing where he sits/stands straight up. He's not actually extending his back feet so I don't know what you would technically call that... But I digress. I've walked into the room several times and he was like this. This has been going on for the past month or two, and it is just so confusing because I'm not sure why he's doing it. He faces the wall, and then sits on his shelf and his top paws are resting against the next shelf level. He just chills there for a while. Tonight after play time he went to sit there again. Not sure there's a really pattern, it's just kinda on and off where ever he wants to be.

I wouldn't call it begging or anything because his back is then towards me. Did he just find a new position he likes or does this mean something? Does anyone have any ideas?

I've attached (hopefully) a photo of him doing it. This is from the side though (so the wall would be on the right [the direction he's facing]).

New chin is too fast and smart for me.

ase you don't feel like reading the spiel below, here is a summery:

How do I catch a chin who has learned to stay away from treats and only ever go half way into his dust bath?

-------------------

A week ago I took in an ~2.5 year old chinchilla who's owner didn't have time for him anymore. At this point I can pick him up to go to playtime pretty easily but the little energy ball never wants to get picked up to go back. The first time I brought him out to his play space the old hand over the dust bath trick worked. Then he learned to never go more than half way so he can dash away before I get him. I tried to lure him with treats but after one failed catch attempt he wont go after them.

I did manage to grab him one of the times he got close. I don't want him to start avoiding me during play time. Poor little guy wants nothing more that to get out of his cage to play and stay there but I have to go to work at some point ><. Little guy was out for 45 minutes last time and promptly passed out when I got him back to the cage. I've got him a bunch of new chew toys and tunnels for the cage and a wheel is on it's way. Hopefully the wheel with give him something to do aside from begging to come out.

Until then, and if that doesn't do the trick, anyone have any tips for catching him? I'd like to take him out to play for half an hour before work and half an hour before i got to bed but I can't afford the time for him to not want to let me take him back in. any tips?

Can't preform hair ring check

A week ago I acquired a chinchilla from a guy who no longer wanted him. He was willing to part with him for little cost and I may have discovered why. I noticed that the tip of my chinchilla's penis is discolored and will not fully retract. He grooms it often and and sit hunched over like he is in pain sometimes. He is eating and peeing still. I just tried to give him a ring check and he was a trooper about it, but I couldn't get the penis out. Gently pulling at the tip while pressing around the base area didn't budge it. Any advice. Looking for vets online at the moment.

Also do you think he will forgive me for traumatizing him >< he let out some wines when my boyfriend visited the cage when I was done.

Excited!

I've been waiting a month but I finally brought her home. I now own a pretty little 2 month old violet girl! She doesn't have a name yet. I'm debating between Dahlia abd Willow, but my boyfriend wants me to name her after the chinchilla pokemon Cinccino.

But pic after she's done being a ball of energy.

Kit Versus Adult Coloring

Something I was thinking about was if chinchillas' coloring evolve as they age? If so, does anyone have pictures of what their chinchilla looked like as a kit versus as an adult? Also, does it depend on the mutation? Such as, can you tell how dark an ebony will be when it's still a kit?

FN142, Silver Surfer Wheel and Extras for Sale

The cage and wheel are both in very good condition, used by one chin for about 2 years. The cage is not assembled but includes everything necessary to be put back together.

Extras include:

a whole bunch of treats and pumice (all from Rhonda's chins)

half bag of critical care

several fleece liners (large and small) and hanging fleece bed (some bought from forum users, some made by myself)

I also have some blue cloud dust (maybe 2-3 pounds)

I'm asking for $150 OBO

Looking for a new chin in the Dallas area

Hello everyone, I currently own one Chinchilla that I believe is a few years old. It was a rescue and not a lot of information was given to me about him. He's great though and the wife and I are trying to find him a new buddy.

We're looking to find a reputable breeder in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. We live about two hours away but we will take as many precautions as possible to transport it safely. I'm thinking taking a few chinchillers, and making sure that it's nice and chilly in the car will be ok, along with traveling on a cooler day or in the early morning.

Does anyone know any breeders in the Dallas area, or can recommend a reputable pet store? FYI, I'm looking for a 1+ year male. Color doesn't matter, I just want him to be older/bigger so that he's not too small to bunk with my current one.

Thanks in advance!

Cage Questions

So I am in the market for a new cage for my fuzzbutt. The only problem is, I don't know how much room I am going to have in a few months, but I need a new cage ASAP. I already know I want the ferret nation but I am having trouble deciding whether or not to spring for a double unit or stick with the single, and if I need more room buy the add on. I know that it is cheaper to buy the double in the long run (if I have the extra room) but i'm willing to pay a little crunch fee for the good of my chinchilla.

Basically, for a single chinchilla, should I stick with the single?

Thanks

Chinchilla kisses,

Possible eye infection? Allergies?

My chinchilla has a weird eye problem. Two days ago his eye looked strange (the fur around it, moreso) and we couldn't tell if it was fur drop, or moisture. The next day he looked fine, so that confirmed his eye had been watering. His eye looks watery again. I gently blew on his eye and he immediately closed it; the other eye doesn't have a problem at all. See attached photos. I'm not sure what to do -- he has never been to the vet, and I also don't know if this constitutes an emergency vet visit tonight.

Holes in Poop

My chinchilla has always had a sensitive stomach. so he's had issues with feces that never was indicative of a larger issue (parasites of enteritis or anything...) A week ago, he actually got into a wire and chewed it up. it was the wire to a digital thermostat i kept near his cage (my mom was looking after him and let it get too close accidentally. it's made of plastic outside and copperwire. which i know he ingested.). i took him to the nonspecialist emergency and they said the only thing we can do is wait it out. which pissed me off to no end but it was 2 am in the morning and the closest specialist was 2 hours away. i was manic and so upset. i cried that night and honestly thought he was going to die. he seemed to show signs of bloat for that night and i saw copperwire from the thermostat being passed in softer than usual and lighter poop. but pretty soon it became normal relative poop to what he had so i just assumed the worst is over and he passed all that he had ingested.

now in the last week, in the periods between dawn and morning he will definitely have tiny tiny poops that isn't constipated and hard but still soft--which is worrisome. also i've broken open some of the larger better poops (which he passes during the nightime and twilight hours) and they have had some tiny holes in them. should i take him to a specialist or do you guys think he should be fine and that the holes will pass? i don't know what i'm dealing with but i would like some basis to go off of. is this impaction or infection??? should i get an ultrasound or x-ray? or test the poops or both?

I like to spoil my boys

New to the forum, I've had my 2 boys, Charles & Darwin, for 2 months now. They are 2 years old, and rescued from a pet hoarder. Poor little guys hadn't had a dust bath in so long they didn't know what to do with the dust at first. Hoping to share tips and experiences with other enthusiasts.

We're going to Chinchilla!

There's this city a few hours away from where I live called Chowchilla and my niece and nephew go with their mom to the fair there every year.

Before going, my 5 year old niece (who adores my chinchillas) was super excited and was running around saying she was going to Chinchilla and expecting the place to be filled with chinchillas lol. She was so disappointed when my mom and I had to tell her that it was Chowchilla and we didn't think there would be any chinchillas at the fair. I was trying so hard not to laugh and ran to the other room where she couldn't hear me busting up.

Gotta love kids lol

Two Levels of Ferret Nation

Good Morning Everyone!

I am going to joining the Ferret/Critter Nation Club soon. Is it better to leave the middle floor in or take it out and just put in shelves or is it just personal preference? I have a Quality Cage currently so I am use to having the whole space open but from all the pictures I've looked through it seems to be a toss up.

Are there any pros and cons to each?

Change in Bathroom behavior

My little guy is 13 & has never really been one to pee on his ledges. Occasionally, it would happen but never with any consistency. Recently, within in the last 2-3weeks he has repeatedly been peering on one ledge. No change in poop, water or eating consumption, regular amounts of urine, and good energy. Why the sudden change? His environment hasn't changed, nor his cage, people around him or his diet. Any suggestions?

Any chance of adapting this cage for a breeding pair?

I'll be moving in a few months, so should finally be able to look at maybe having a couple more chinnies! As far as breeding goes, it's something I've been interested in for some time and have attended shows and talked with NCS breeders about it (which I'll continue to do), so it's not something I'd enter into lightly. I'll be at home so will have plenty of time to spend with them, too.

I'm just trying to plan ahead a bit, since at the moment I have the option of getting help with moving and setting up cages (otherwise it'll be me fighting to assemble stuff by myself).

I really like the look of these cages as a pet cage (with the ladders removed and wooden shelves added, of course):

http://ift.tt/1nKc4jb

But obviously I can see it looks like a definite no-no for kits. (clearer pic. of bar spacing here: http://ift.tt/1nn5cdi) Could it work for a pair if the top section were blocked, maybe the shelf removed, and with moving the female to a baby safe cage when necessary? (I don't mean right before the due date, or anything, that'd be cutting it a bit fine) I only wanted one pair, really, and was thinking of choosing an older female, so my first pair would eventually end up just as my pets anyway (not still caged together, obvs, unless the male had the snip).

Thoughts? :))

Shipping Chinchillas?

I've always been curious about this, I've seen people ship reptiles, dogs, ect, I was wondering if people are allowed to ship chinchillas? and if so how common is it for people to ship chinchillas?

Licking face

Carl licks my face sometimes does anybody's chinchilla do this and do you no why?

It's been chaos around here!

Hi all. I know I haven't been on here for a while. It's just that my whole world has turned upside down. If you remember, I last posted that I could not make it to the Spring show in Ventura because my husband was sick. Well, what started as a cold (or so we thought), put him in the hospital with a bad case of pneumonia. While there, the doctors ran all kinds of tests and discovered that the cause of the pneumonia was actually lung cancer which had already spread to the lymph nodes on both sides of the spine and to the back of his skull. There was nothing that the doctors could do for him. We brought him home so he could be with us and not strangers when he passed. The majority of his family was here as well as my own parents. He passed away on the 11th.

As a result of his passing, the decision was made to move back to Aurora, Colorado where I was born and raised. The chinchillas will be going with me as will the rest of my little zoo. I need them to help keep me sane. This will be a big undertaking as I will need to make an extra trip from California to Colorado, but I think it is worth it.

For those of you who have made it through my little tale, I thank you for letting me bend your ears (so to speak).

Are these acceptable?

I've been looking into different treats, because who doesn't like spoiling their babies? How does the chin community feel about the following?:

dehydrated celery

broccoli, a rare baby carrot, and tiny pieces of sweet potato (my vet recommended these...)

dried parsley

carob beans

dehydrated leeks

Messy fur

My chins have been sick one due to tooth damage and the other has a bladder infection from a water bottle malfunction. Their coats are matted and sticky from being sick and the antibiotics. Poor things look horrible. My question is should I try and clean up their coats or let it go and give it time to resolve as they get better?

Now i no why they were around 60% off...

Back in Nov/December last year (13) petsmart ran a sale on the 182 double ferret nation cages. What used to be around $220-250 was around 100-110 or something like that.

I ordered two cages back then. Yesterday i opened the first one up to try something with my ferrets (a complete disaster.) I noticed that both plastic trays had pieces that snapped off. The edge of one tray right where it starts to round had a large crack right down the length of the tray. The bottom right hand door was at such a bad angle that you could push the top part of it out with out pulling those latches together.

... And the metal bar on the second floor back piece was snapped! wtf?! :hair:

Considering the time that's passed i doubt i can do anything about it. But i sent petsmart an email anyway on Thursday. So far, no response at all. :impatient:

... I just wonder what i have to look forward to if i ever open the other one...

Chin's ears freckled? Jagged? Dry?

They dont seem to be giving her problems, but i thought i'd ask for a second opinion regardless. I take good care of her (i try my best anyway) but she's a very nervous chin - i've had problems with her being stressed in the past and she's quite the cage chewer.

She seems fine, lets me scratch her, play with her ears, and they've always been like this, but i'm very curious what you guys have to say.

Thanks!

Swap carriers?

I am looking for a 2 hole carrier and I could swap someone for my 4 hole carrier. Depending on how much they are to ship, we each could pay for the shipping of the carrier we want to receive. If you're interested, please reply to this thread with pictures of yours. Thanks

Lol

Not long ago my chinchilla decided to pee in my BROTHERS shoe... At first im just like omg i'm gonna be in SO much trouble. Then when I told my brother he's like oh that shoe was broken and suppose to be in the garbage. :P I still got in trouble in case that was a new shoe... oh well lol.

Thirty day quarantine...and heat

So I've been preparing to bring home a new chin for about a month now. I've been keeping the room she'll be stored in at about 65.

Well, we've been warming up in Wisconsin and it seems that the room shot up to 74 and will not budge.

What do I do? My coldest room is the room I keep my other girls in. I've been looking for other rooms in the house but none are staying cool enough...

I feel like a failure to bringing home my first baby chin, I thought I had it figured out but honestly it's never this hot and humid this early on in the summer.

Edit:She's coming home next week and it seems that it's going to be even hotter and more him humid :hair: this is why summer is my least favorite season!

I am pleased to introduce........

Darrell and Earl were born today around 1pm. They are from my PW Male Dexter and my standard (from Tiffany's Chins) Sofi. Both of who took home a 1st place ribbon at the SEC MCBA show last November.

I will post better pictures ASAP.

"wild" hedgies and chins might run on wheels if provided in their natural habitat?!

Hedgiedaddy ran into an interesting article: http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.o.../20140210.full

Small preview from the abstract: "Here, we show that when running wheels are placed in nature, they are frequently used by wild mice, also when no extrinsic reward is provided. Bout lengths of running wheel behaviour in the wild match those for captive mice."

And from the observations section: "Some animals seem to use the wheel unintentionally, but mice and some shrews, rats and frogs were seen to leave the wheel and then enter it again within minutes in order to continue wheel running."

Now we just need a few Europeans to put some wheels out in their gardens to see what happens with the hedgies!

Misaligned teeth?

I noticed yesterday that Tseng's teeth seem to be different. At least I'm pretty sure it's different, I don't see his teeth a lot because he won't be handled so the only time I can look at them is when he's chewing, which is tough. Anyway the bottom teeth don't line up. At first I thought he'd lost one because I could only see one, but it looks like the other one is in there, just back farther. I really can't see any details though. Is this something I should worry about? Is a vet visit in order? On a side note, how do you guys with unhandleable chins check things like that?

Drooling? Choking?

Yesterday out of no where my chinchilla started drooling, and pulling at her open mouth with her paws and drool was just pouring out. It lasted about 2 minutes and then she stopped, took a dust bath and was fine. Was she choking or something??

HELP!!!

I have never posted here before, I mainly read and get ideas and information. I however am a little concerned. I have a pregnant female, her due date is Thursday based on my calculations from when I found the breeding plug to 111 days forward! However, she has a very thick sticky fluid on her back side near her tail and I am nervous. She isn't stretching, or constantly cleaning herself...she drank a whole freaking bottle of water yesterday and none today yet. She hasn't eaten too much in about 2 days. Does anyone have any advice? I attached a photo of it so you can get a better look. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You!

Salutations!

Hi, I'm Maggie. I'm 17, hence the name teenmom (I think it's kind of funny...). My chinchilla's name is Jasmine, she's two years old and I've had her for a year and a half. I absolutely adore her, and she is spoiled rotten. She is absolutely gorgeous, and super super intelligent. I also have three dogs (Two labradoodles and a havanese/yorkie mix. We call him a yorkanese) and another chinchilla. His name is Dusty, and we unintentionally rescued him so we're not sure how old he is. Another family we knew wasn't treating him right at all, so we figured it would be better for us to take him in. Now he's more of a family pet, while Jasmine is only my responsibility. Dusty was really sick when we took him in but we nursed him back to health, and he's completely healthy and happy now. Anyway, chinchillas are like the coolest pets ever, and I love mine very much. Jasmine is pretty much my baby, and she's the sweetest thing ever. So yeah.

Also, the pictures are only of Jasmine. I don't have any of Dusty, but his coat is all white and grey on his tail.

Sleep well, Smudge

When I got home from work tonight I decided I couldn't let Smudge wait another day. I wanted to spend one last night with him but I gave him a cookie and he just gagged the entire time while attempting to eat it. As he sat on my lap and I stroked him I could feel his spine and the look in his eyes told me he was done fighting. I called the vet and she agreed to let me bring him in tonight.

Smudge, we had a great 8 years together. You never failed to crack me up with your attitude and strong personality. Even your cute perfect eyebrow gave you the look of sass you gave me every day. You lived a good almost 10 years. Rest easy, little guy.

Deciding on adding new feeding regiment

I been feeding my chins oxbow since they been babies. I been thinking of buying some mazuri and mixing the two together....would That be okay??? Thank u all.

Potential New Names for future chins... what do you think?

Hello,

I was recently thinking about getting houses that have artwork on them for my chin set up I am creating. Then I got to thinking what artwork I would want on them.

Other then being boring like I usually am, I thought about possibly getting movie inspired theme... Frozen, to be exact.

Then I thought, what if I take two of my favorite characters from the movie and make those the names of my future chins?

I am going to get two male chins at the end of summer, one mosaic and one black velvet.

I was thinking I could name the mosaic Olaf (for the adorable snowman in the movie) and the black velvet Sven (after the cute reindeer).

Do you think these are cute names? Or do you think I am going to regret naming and theming part of my chins double ferret nation after a movie?

P.S. I am not obsessed with the movie, just thought some of the characters are really cute.

Producer's Pride Rabbit Feed?

I just had an interesting question brought up to me and was hoping to get some input from some of y'all. One of the FB groups I belong to includes people with all types of pets, and today I noticed a post from someone regarding the 2 chinchillas they'd recently adopted. It's a male and female being housed together (ughh), they're in a cage with plastic shelves, have a wire mesh wheel that has a diameter of 12" at the most, and are being feed some sort of chinchilla food "mix" that the owner says she picks all the dried fruits out of and puts in a different container to feed as treats.

I offered advice on what needed to be done to provide a safe environment (along with separating them but I get the feeling she's already decided she wants them to breed), and gave her suggestions regarding what type of pellets to feed--and ditch all that dried fruit obviously lol.

Another member then replied and basically criticized the pellets I'd recommended because they all contain cane molasses in the ingredients. He then said that Producer's Pride Rabbit Feed (it's sold at TSC apparently), doesn't contain *any* sugars and is the only product on the market that doesn't, and suggested it would be a better choice for chinchillas as well.

I'd never heard of that brand before so right now all I know about it is the fairly limited amount of info I've found online so far. It contains 15% protein min. and 15-18% fiber. So far I haven't been able to find a complete ingredient list, although I did find a site where it mentioned that the first 5 ingredients are "Processed Grain By Products, forage products, roughage products, grain products, plant protein products". Am I being paranoid or do those sound a bit "sketchy"?

Anyway, I'm curious now and would like to be able to confirm to the person who brought it up whether it is or isn't appropriate and why. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

New to the chinchilla addiction!

Hey y'all I'm Chindiccted which is short for Chinchilla addicted, i might have spelt it wrong but oh well it's late in the night i'll go with it . But im new here i have a 2 year old chinchilla named Luna who is a standard and can i just tell you i think she is the most adorable thing on earth i love her like a child. I'm glad to come to a chinchilla haven where we can all adore eachothers chins and hedgies also!

Grrreat Wall?

Has anyone tried Grrreat Wall with their chins? The people I got my new cage from gave it to me. I'm sure my little rabbits can't get over it, but don't know about Cloudy. It would be indoors only and supervised, but don't want a chase on my hands.

Can I sprinkle CC dry?

So I'm needing ways to give my baby a little bit more fiber...he is so bad at eating hay...

i wanted to try critical care, but he will not eat it in wet form and basically every attempt to feed it to him ends in a goopy fur stained mess.

i was thinking that maybe i can just sprinkle in onto his regular pellets dry. there is no reason he wouldn't eat it because he's a good eater.

...oh...well...okay...I guess I can share xD (no worries, it's just water. He insists on drinking out of my glass)

New cage setup

Hi all,

The other day my new cage was delivered, my dream cage would be a critter nation but in the UK they run for around £300 (about $500 for anyone in the USA), As I have 3 Chins that I want new cages for thats a bit too much for me.

Instead I found 2 tier cage on ebay for £100 which I have made adjustments to.

A few words on the cage:-

Overall the build quality is good there was an issue where 2 of the holes were not threaded when they should have been making it impossible to insert the bolts. Luckily I have a set of taps so was able to put my own thread on this. One of the catches on the lower tier was not positioned correctly and had to be adjusted. Besides these minor issues, once the cage was constructed it felt solid and for the money I really think this is the best that you can get in the UK.

It comes with a plastic slide out tray that fits underneath a wire floor, the second floor is also wire and it comes with 2 metal shelves and 3 , metal ramps. The tray, floors, ramps and shelves are all removeable so I took them out straight away as it wasnt what I wanted, It was at that point that I took the picture above.

I decided that rather than having custom steel pans constructed that I would tile the floors.

I also wanted guards on the floors so I started by building these, I used 1/2" Plywood as the bases which I got from a local saw mill as off-cuts for around £4 each. I cut them to size so that the bottom one woud fit flush into the cage and the top floor would cover about 3/4 of the cage leaving room for her to jump up there. I used Kiln dried pine from wikes for the guards 20mmx50mm this came in 1.8 meter lengths, I bought a pack of 10 for around £12 which is much more that I needed but its always good to have more for repairs and future projects! I used a mitre saw to cut these pieces to size at 45 degree angles and fixed them from under the plywood with wood screws.

I tiled these boxes with Glossy black marble effect tiles that I also picked up at wikes. I got a box of 17 of these for £12. Once they were cut to fit i used no more nails to stick them to the the plywood and grouted them with black waterproof grout.

I then went about making the shelves that i wanted. I used more kiln dried pine from wikes for the shelves this was 20mm by 140mm, came in 1.8m lengths and i got it in what I think was a pack of 5 for about £20. I made the guards from the same wood as before again cut to length with mitre saw at 45 degree angles where necessary. I attached them to the shelves from underneath by drilling through the shelf into the guards and hammering doweling into the holes. I used 2 pieces of dowel per guard. I know that this fixed them well when i realized I had fixed one upside down and had to pry it apart again!

I also made a hay feeder and a house out of various pieces of wood as mentioned above, these were also fixed together with the "dowel method" explained above. Once they were all finished they looked like this.

All of these pieces were sanded down before bieng put into the cage.

After this most of the hard work was done and it was a case of fitting everything into the cage.

The bottom floor required no fixing as it fit snugly into the inlay designed for the included mesh floor. The top floor was fixed to the inbuilt ledge to the left and attached to the side of the cage by drilling holes through the guards and putting 6mm bolts through the bars with large washers to hold it in place.

For the shelves I used woodscrews into shelves themselves with a combination of large washers and mending plates, i pre drilled the screw holes to avoid any splitting of the wood.

The hay box was attached with 6mm bolts and washers againn for easy removal (I intend to replace the nuts with wingnuts) and the house was just placed in.

Finally I put in several fleece pieces that my partner Emma had been slaving away at while I was doing all this, blankets for both floors (3 sheets thick) a hammock and a PVC tube cover for a piece of PVC tubing that I had cut earlier.

This is the finished product.

This project was done in a day and overall I am very pleased with the result and Poppy seems very happy in her new home. I think I will make some alterations/additions in the future and very soon creating a whole new cage for Willow.

I will be starting an almost identical project soon and was planning on making some youtube tutorials. Im not sure if I am allowed to post those on here but if I am and people are interested then please let me know!
