Abcess (Retrobulbar Abscess - Bulging eye) - Good antibiotic? Baytril Alternatives?

So for the past few months my chin has been having one issue after another in one of her eyes.

She initially had an abcess above her eye, and now her eye has started to bulge. With this eye bulge its also causing other issues (corneal ulcer and conjuctivitis currently).

I just got a new vet, and I am waiting to do further diagnostic testing. I have an appointment this coming week to do some xrays and take some blood work for my chin to see if the bulging eye could possibly be due to a...

Corneal Ulcer/Conjunctivitis - Treatment Options?

So my chin has been going through a number of health issues in one of her eyes. Its morphed from being an abcess above the eye, to a bulging eye and now apparently a corneal ulcer with conjunctivitis - This is all happened for the past few months.

I just got a new vet, and they suspect that the reason why my chin has a corneal ulcer is because of the bulging eye. Apparently a corneal ulcer can be caused usually by trauma, or some debris in a chins eye. But unfortunately since my chin has a...

Fresh Apple Sticks vs Baked ones

A few weeks ago I bought some apple wood chew sticks off of etsy for Mr. B. When I got them in the mail I noticed he looooved these apple sticks. Normally he is quite picky and won't chew about 1/3 of the ones I have. But today I noticed when making another applewood purchase, that these sticks are "fresh"? This is where I bought them. The seller says the trees are...

Best treatment bath dust mix for treating and preventing ringworm?

I came across this post by Forever Feisty Chinchilla Rescue about using Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) mixed with bath dust for treating ringworms (reference: see "Fungus"). I also read that some people add sulfur powder (reference: click here) or over the counter antifungus foot powder (as mentioned by many webpages including posts in this forum)...

Chinchilla Breeders/Rescues

Hello, I am currently looking to adopt a chinchilla. I know a couple pet stores around that either have them or can get them in. But I know that its better to adopt or get from a reputable breeder. This is where I'm stuck, I can't find any place thats not too far. The closest it about 3 and a half hours. If needed I can drive that far but if possible find something closer. I live in Western Illinois. Thank you.

What filling/stuffing material is safe for a DIY fleece pillow for chinchilla?

I saw a lot of Etsy fleece pillows are filled with cotton or poly-fil. Are these materials safe? If not, what else is a safe option? Thank you.

Potty pads instead of bedding?

I am thinking to remove the potty pan (currently filled with recycled paper bedding) completely with fleece potty pads (the rest of the cage floor will be lined with tiles). Is that recommended?

Uneven poop sizes and no poops during the day. Is that normal?

My chinchilla seems to have a timed scheduled to his pooping. He only poops at night (after around 9pm) and no pooping at all during the day. I also found his overnight poops vary in sizes. Some are only a few millimetres long, some are over 1 centimetre long. Is that normal? Thank you.

Behaviour during playtime

Recently my chin has started getting very ’argumentative’ during playtime. Playtime hasn’t changed for a long time but she’s been getting quick to anger when she doesn’t get her way. Something as simple as stopping her from chewing on my pants or picking her up to put her away has been leading to angry outbursts and spraying urine. What should I do?

Back and forth relationship

Hello all! I'm new to this site but I'm so glad I found it!

I will try to explain my question as best I can:
I have 2 female chinchillas who will be 4 years old in September. They have always been cage mates and best friends. (They aren't sisters but they were both born in September 2014. I originally had two sisters but one of them passed away about a week after we got them. That's a different story for maybe a different day. My heart is still healing from that experience.) We were able to...

My Chinchillas Still Sprays Pee After Two Years HELP

I’ve had my rescue chinchillas for two years, both are females and approximately 3 to 4 years old. My one girl Chynna has always sprayed Urine, however I expected after two years that she would stop spraying me. I am so extremely frustrated because I play with them every single day, I handle them so gently and never force my attention on them, and I do not do anything to provoke her except for pushing her off of my feet when she chews on my toenails during playtime. I don’t even take them...

How to tell which chinchilla is spraying

Hello! I recently took in 4 Chinchillas that were surrendered by someone who could no longer care for them... They share a very large three-story cage and I've noticed there is a lot of pee on the walls and surrounding the cage I have two chinchillas myself that have never sprayed and I'm wondering how I can tell which chinchilla is spraying so I can separate them in a different cage on hardwood instead of carpet. I I'm also wondering what to do about the spraying I contacted the previous...

Heat treated pine shaving safe for chinchillas?

post anesthesia question

Hello,

I posted a thread last week about my Chinchilla Echo. The very good news is, Echo just came back from a second vet appointment where they looked at her teeth (including X-ray) and they said her teeth are all perfect! Bloodwork also almost perfect, just a little high in one area that the vet said is probably leftover from the GI problems she was having last week.

Today she was given anesthesia for the dental xrays and I noticed afterward the fur around her eyes was all covered in...

It's still like a healthy size, hard and not soft, and doesnt have an odor

Sisters fighting occasionally

Hello!

i have 2 female chinchillas that have been living together for around 3 years.
Occasionally i hear little scuffles in their cage and i ends up with one chasing the other one around the cage and eventually the one being chased hiding in the corner barking at her if she gets close and shooting pee.

This has happend probably 3-4 seperate times over the 3 years and i seperate them when the one hiding looks to stressed or i see fur fly. Sometimes it lasts a day or a few days and then...

Does anyone know of a good combo hay & pellet feeder?

Wooden cage??? Help!!

Hello,

I am trying to find a new cage for my Hedgehog Noe. I could a woodworker who makes structures with upcycled wood. I I'm planning to get a 4x2 ft cage from him, with an open-top and a mesh wire window covering the front long side of the cage. The wood isn't polished or anything, but it won't beer rigid and dangerous for her either. I don't know what type of wood he's using either, I'm guessing it's a mixture since its upcycled wood. Chin concern (digestion/teeth)

I've been searching around the forum a bit and I've seen some people with similar problems, but I still wanted to see if I could get some fellow chin owner advice.

My chinchilla's name is Echo, she's a 9 year old female. I've noticed over the past few weeks it has seemed like she's been chewing less. I didn't think too much about it until a few nights ago where it seemed like she was eating less than normal, but was still definitely pooping and everything and I didn't see any other weird...

Complications after 2 foot fall?

Raichu took a vertical splat fall from one ledge to the one below. He expected to jump to the one that’s usually attached to the cage door but i had it open to pet his brother. He jumped down to the food bowl to eat but didnt eat. He just sat in the food corner and closed his eyes and mouth pawed very slowly and whined(¿) every few seconds (sounded more like a loud sneeze). Possible issue with Mr. B's Junk and a Fur question

Lately I've noticed my Chin Mr. B hasn't been cleaning his privates at all (I used to see this occasionally and laugh). And normally he is pretty enthusiastic about making sweet love to his plush friend during play time, but for the past month or two he'll only mount/grasp the toy, but that's about it. Today when I was checking his feet for any pinkness/dryness, I noticed his penis tip was kind of wet looking. It wasn't hanging out, and the fur around it was not wet. Is something up or...

Today while saying hello to my chin I noticed one of her eyes won’t open all the way. It’s clearly effecting her vision as she seems to stumble and miss ledges on the one side. It looks like a bit of fur is holding her eye shut, but she won’t let anyone touch it. What should I do about this?

Giardia symptoms persist after second treatment

My friend 2 chinchillas have been diagnosed with severe giardia infection about three and a half weeks ago. They have been put on Tiabendazole (every 24 hours for 5 days, 2 courses with a 9 days break). Chins Don't Adore The Cold

I know, the title may seem weird. For context, I've heard that chins love when the temps are below 60 degrees F. 50-55? They love it! So active and everything. But my two aren't like that at all. When the room temp is below 60, they actually aren't very active at all. They aren't lethargic or reclusive, they just aren't as hyper as they could be. Even at their active hours, dawn and dusk. They don't love it, they don't hate it. They seem.. meh. But in temps 64-66? Oh, that's their prime...

Blue Cloud Dust

Hello, all. I am struggling to find some reliable dust for my chin. I ordered a couple pounds of blue cloud dust from someone in California a few years ago, but I went back to that website recently (I cannot remember the name for anything) and it said the mine was empty. I am hesitant to buy anything form a local pet store and would like the best quality dust without all the sparkles. Where is everyone getting their dust nowadays? Thanks.

It would be great if I could keep it see through, for my own enjoyment.

Points, Spurs, and even occlusal surface

Hi everyone, it's been forever and a day since I've posted on here.

So, Bella, my 10/11 year old girl has recently had both a spur on her lower jaw and points in her check teeth. Two separate visits, the first caught the spur. She has only been eating critical care since early November. They took ex rays and did not show root elongation.

*Sigh* here we go again. The redness on the heel of my two chins' feet is still not gone. To be exact, the redness on their heels doesn't cover the whole heel, just the center mainly. There's also no scabbing, scratches, heat, bumps, puss, etc. All there is, is some slight normal callusing here and there. The heels are also a little bit wider than normal. I've tried basically everything. Vet advice, cushioning almost every inch of the cage, perches instead of ledges, bag balm for a few...

Chinchilla food

recently bought the Oxbow Garden Select pellets for my chin and I realized that they aren’t supposed to eat dry fruits or veggies. My dumb*** thought that It was no different than the Oxbow essentials pellets. Hello so this is my second time posting about ringworm.
For the past 4 months it has gone wild throughout my home and although I’m doing all the things I’m meant to be doing I still can’t get rid of it. I am disinfecting the whole house daily. I’m using tinactin in Walt’s sand baths and cleaning his cage on a daily basis.

Can chinchillas have dry skin without it being ringworm? My chin has some flakes, but there is no redness/pinkness of the skin and she doesn’t itch. She is also not losing fur.
