Fireworks

Is there anything I should do for my chins when it's the 4th of July and New Years? Two of my nearby neighbors tend to set off a good amount of fireworks on those two holidays, varying on intensity.

Looking for the safe wood list...

I know I have seen lists of safe wood for chinchillas, but searching for "safe wood" brings me pages upon pages but none is with the list of which wood types are safe :-(
Can someone link me to the right page?
Thanks & Happy New Year!

Bandit & Buttons

I've done a personal introduction when I first joined the forum, but I've never properly introduced my two chins Bandit & Buttons. They're standard gray twin brothers, and they've been with me for three months now, and they've definitely come out of their shell and have no fear showing me what they like and dislike. So, I figured it'd be fun to type out little descriptions about the B Boys (the household nickname for them at this point, lol) so you guys can really see what they're like if...

Chinchi scoots on wet towels

So, this isn’t an issue really, more of a query as far as behavior.
My chinchi, Chinchi, will scoot her butt on wet towels. Any wet fabric really... and when my mom was chinchi-sitting for me, she twice shot piss after encountering a Diet Coke and then a glass of wine sitting on the floor with my mom. It’s like she is a weirdo with liquids... is this a thing for anyone else?
Thanks!
Sincerely, Chinchi

Hello chinny lovers!

Hi everyone! I'm Savannah! I'm a full time musician professionally and new to the chinchilla owner world! It started as a love of chinchillas when I first saw one when I was 5 but never had the money to get one. Then I was offered two chinchillas that had been adopted out from two sets of owners who had neglected them/not really learned how to take care of them. The chins were not happy or super healthy, and I literally adopted them to learn about them and give them the best and most loving...

Crash course on sick Chin care (my chin is on Meloxicam and not eating much now)

I've had my chinchilla, Mr. B, for about a month now. I adopted him from a Chinchilla adoption center and he was a bright happy chin! Been feeding him Oxbow Essential pellets, timothy hay, occasional chinchilla safe dried flowers/herbs, and spoiling him with apple sticks, chew toys etc. Unsure of his history tho.

A few days ago he had some obvious mouth pain (rubbing mouth, loud/constant teeth grinding, wincing/flattening ears), I posted this in the other topic thread under health. After...

Reluctant to eat (X-ray)

I'd noticed for a while that Henry wasn't eating everything, especially all his herbs, but since I'd got few nicer bits in and he was eating those and still eating harder food incl. pellets, and I think more of them, I thought he was being fussy at first and maybe just bored of some of the herbs, till he stopped eating his favourite things too. On the 17th he had a spur on his front teeth clipped. Unfortunately, the vet caught his tongue while he was doing it. I wish it'd been burred under...

How to prevent molar spurs

Hi! I'm a new chinnie owner and have had my Chinchilla, Mr. B, for about a month now.

On Friday he started rubbing his mouth/grinding his teeth and kind of wincing in pain. I brought him to the vet and she says he has points on his molars that are causing inflammation in his mouth, so I am going to take him to get them shaved down by a specialist vet soon. Right now he seems fine and is still eating/drinking at least, but a bit underweight which might be bc of the molar spurs. I feed him...

Rehoming Chinchilla in Arizona

Due to allergies, I'm having to rehome my 1 year old mosaic male chinchilla. He's the sweetest little guy ever, so I want to be sure he is going to a good home. He comes with a double ferret/critter nation cage, several hammocks, some ledges, his food, dust bath house, blue cloud dust, and everything else in his cage (no plastic).

He's very social and loves to meet new people. He knows a couple tricks and loves training. So far he knows 'crate', 'paw', 'high five', 'spin', 'hop on hand'...

Chin too thin?? Please help!

Okay so I have a lot of chinchillas. Backstory, we adopted two chinchillas who had not been cared for properly by either sets of previous owners. (Yes, these poor babies have had two different sets of bad past owners. This is why I took them immediately) All we knew about them was that 1 of them was 1 year-old, the other was almost 2 years old. They were not related, and they were both males and caged together.

Two weeks later. One of my "males" popped out two babies while we were asleep. I...

My Troublesome Chin "Fluffy"

So I have a chin who is around 1 year or 2 years old. His names Fluffy because when we got him my mom was so surprised by how fluffy he was that she was like "You are now called Fluffy!" So we made it his name. But, he loves trouble and scaring me. I just had him in playtime and he started to jump up the walls and cage! I assume it's normal but, he loves to jump from a box in the one corner to my shoulder and sometimes he misses. He's sometimes scary and funny to watch...... And as im...

Greetings all!

Hello all! I’ve been reading a ton of stuff on this forum and associated links learning about chinchillas over the past year before we took the plunge and surprised our daughter this Christmas with chinchillas! She has been saving up for the past 2.5 years and helped purchase the trio we adopted. We were super fortunate that the car ride method worked well to bond the three as none of them had been together prior to this. Looking forward to continuing learning more from all of you...

Feeding meds

My two boys were diagnosed with a fungal infection on their ears yesterday. They got it from past owners, and it just didn't show up until it got into the later stages with me. They now have meds for it, but I have to feed it to them with a syringe. Is there any specific method that's easiest to do it? Also, what should I do if I get some medicine on the fur near their mouth?

Wire floor covering help

Hi everyone,

I recently got a new cage for one of my chinchillas that i'm setting up for her, however it has a wire floor which definitely looks unsafe to me. I've been trying to figure out the best way to cover it and I just can't figure it out. I have a wooden ledge that will cover about 2/5 of it.

I know fleece is a popular option and my chinchilla is litter trained so she wouldn't be peeing on it often (I think) but my concern with the fleece is how to get the hay out of it for...

What to do in a pinch?

I have been using fleece liners for the past year or so, with no problems at all. Recently one of my chis has started chewing. Theres a golfball size hole in the liner now. I'm planing on tiling the floor, but I wont have the money until my next payday, which is next friday. I would prefer to not use bedding, as I have a FN, and it makes a HUGE mess! But I know the fleece has to come out today! If need be, I will use bedding until I can tile, I was just wondering if anyone has any other...

Fur Tufts

20191108_000710.jpgThis is my chinchilla Timmy. I'm not sure if you can tell from this picture, but he has tiny tufts of fur that stick up all over his back. He is a rescue, and used to chew the hair on his chest and hind quarters quite a lot til I changed him to a better diet. However, I'm still seeing these tufts. Could it be from allowing him free access to his dust bath every night when I let him out to play? He refuses to let me brush or comb him, making an...

Spirit of Xmas but someone can help with the happy ending

Could write a book on the last 4 days, I need some simple advice but will post the question at the end

Day before xmas eve, come home from work slightly early, keep up the habit of saying hello to my two chinchillas. Barney greets me, Bertie follows. I notice Bertie has a train track of drool on his right hand side. Having lost Bunty aged 23 I am fully aware of dental issues, and assume this is the case. I IMMEDIATELY phone his vet. Wasteful Chins

My two chins enjoy pulling a pretty decent amount of hay out of the hay holder and then peeing all over the layer of hay they made on the cage floor. This is not only wasteful, but also makes it difficult to know how much hay they actually eat. Does anyone know how to stop or at least lessen this habit of theirs?

Vaginal Discharge from Chinchilla

My chinchilla is very sick right now, she is barely moving, eating, drinking, and breathing for her seems difficult (her chest is rising out a lot and she is kind of gasping). Shes been like this for about 3 days now. I took her to the vet yesterday and they gave her antibiotics, and im waiting to see how they work but im very nervous for my chinchilla. She doesnt look well, and when I picked her up to give her her medicine, lots of discharge leaked out from her vagina. It was kinda cloudy...

I have hammocks and TONS of chews. My chins are VERY spoiled. I only would like to spend up to $50 but may negotiate especially if...

Urine Color

I got my Lea about a month ago now. She's 10 years old and the family said she wanted a good place for her. She's my first chinchilla and I want her to have the best life possible.
My problem started about a week ago. I let her out into her play area and saw that her urine is a reddish color. I read online that this could be a problem with her diet. I ask the past family about her diet and they said "We gave her the usual Chinchilla food you get at petsmart, but we would also give her...

My chin can't eat. I need help!

Hi! My chinchilla Chila fell yesterday and since then she can't eat anymore and she is lethargic. She takes the food in her hands and she tries to bite it but she can't.

Today i took her to the vet and he looked at her mouth and didn't find anything wrong with it and he gave her an anti inflammatory injection. He also said that she might be scared because of the fall.

Fleece Issue

My cat Shadow can have some pretty hideous hairballs. Sometimes he's a brat and hacks it up onto his fleece padded wooden ledge that was built to a wall. Another Question List

  1. In March, I'm having construction happen which makes me have to move out of my house for a max of 3 months. My two chins will be boarded for that amount of time. Since their wheel is bulky, and I'd like to limit as much stuff I have to transport back and forth as possible, could they be okay without a wheel temporarily? They will also be boarded for about 10 days in July. For those amounts of time, should I be aware of any behavior from them, like them not being as friendly...

Vitamin E

How long should I wait to see any good results after applying vitamin E daily to my chin's ears? I'd like to schedule a vet visit if I see no changes, so knowing how long it takes to notice results will help.

Bedding

My chins will be getting a new cage in about two months with actual bedding, but right now I'm a bit stuck. I've asked this before, but didn't get a very clear answer. Will they be okay with no bedding and three litter pans with aspen shavings inside, so only the Critter Nation plastic pans and shelves? They haven't been chewing on them at all. Should I put some aspen shavings on the pans for bedding, or would they be fine for two months until their new cage arrives?

Weighing Chins

Should I weigh my chins regularly? I already plan on getting a scale in the future, but is it even necessary if they don't show any signs of being under/overweight? I was thinking that handling them and putting them on the scale repeatedly might stress them out.

Bonding with my Chins

What are some of your suggestions on how I should begin the bonding process with my baby chins? Is it ok to introduce treats to 10 week old chins? If so what kind of treats should I have? I know that they will always have to have hay in their home but how much pellets should I be feeding them per day/hour?

Raspberry Leaves?

My boys' birthday is tomorrow, and one of their gifts came with some organic raspberry leaves. I know they're safe, but how much should give? I'm assuming a small pinch?

Lacking Pellets

I made the mistake and overestimated how much pellet food I have for my chins. I'm not sure how much they have left, maybe two days. But their new food is arriving on Sunday. Can a chinchilla go without pellets for multiple days, or would I have to take an emergency trip to the nearest pet store and hope that they have it?

Should My Chin Go To The Vet?

My chinnie has had dry ear issues for about a month or so now, as some of you have seen. But now it has worsened to painless cracking and flaking of his outer ears. I'd hate for him to go to the vet as he's already gone through enough stress, and his carrier isn't prepared yet. But of course if you guys think he should go, I'll take him. Confused about bathing dust

Hi guys!
As I understood, chinchillas need dust rather than sand for bathing. So I ordered a bag of this https://www.amazon.co.uk/PROREZULT-Chinchilla-Degu-Bathing-Dust/dp/B07L5YLWFT as it specifically stated it was dust. But the particles looks quite large and "sandy" to me (attaching a close-up).

Water Bottle

While browsing the forums, I came upon someone saying that water bottles that leak are a no-go as chins shouldn't get wet. I agree, but I have water bottles that do occasionally leak and I've almost never seen my boys get water on them. They never use the bottles when they are leaking. The bottles usually leak when I refill them, and when their wheel is being used. The cage they have isn't the sturdiest, so the cage walls shake when they run on the wheel, which causes the bottle nozzles to...

Reintroducing Cagemates

Hello,

I have 2 chinchillas that have been cagemates for about 2 years. They are both female. They have never had fights, and always loved to cuddle together. About a month ago, I noticed one of them limping, and took her to the vet. The vet diagnosed it as torn soft tissue, and issued cage rest. I separated the two, and kept the one on cagerest in a smaller cage, right next to the original cage, where the two chins can see each other and smell each other. I finally got the ok today from...

Sometimes, for some reason, the humidity jacks up from about 56% to in the mid 60% range. I'm not sure when it starts to die down, as it's mostly in the evening and/or while it's raining. (I live in a quite wet state.) But I know it's not constant. Bandit's Dry Ears (UPDATE)

So, as some of you may have seen, one of my chins has a case of extremely dry ears. I've continued the normal schedule, dust baths Wed. and Sun. with balm a day after each dust bath. But, yesterday and today it seems to have worsened. The dry skin now has a cracked pattern throughout both of the outside of his ears, and the raw skin has spread. Whenever I touch the raw skin, he doesn't flinch or give any signs of sudden pain. It's not bright red, just skin pink. The cracked skin does rub off...

Hi All,

I've come home today and noticed something different in one of my chin's eyes (photo attached- sorry it's not better, he's a little skittish, hence the luring him with an apple stick). It seems crusty to me, as though there's discharge.

Would you see how it goes over the next few days, or take him to the vet as soon as possible?

Where to buy Kiln-Dried Pine in the West Covina, California area

Lately I've been wanting to build my chinchillas a new house to go inside their cage. I was searching around the internet and found that they can be quite expensive to buy built already. My chinchillas are around 6 years old and I wanted to show them that i still love them all these years by creating a new and improved cage design for them. Cage Pictures ~ Playtime

We have four chins who get out for 30 minutes each night. We close the bedroom doors and they have free run of the house. Although this has been fun (around 10 years) our home is due for an update and before we replace things we have to confine them to some degrees. We have the double Critter Nation cage.

I would love to see pictures of others setups. Blocking them off is tricky because we have large openings and not letting them out is not an option. Maybe adding onto their cage...

Balm On Chin Fur

One of my chins is very squirmy and doesn't like to be held, but I have to hold him when applying balm on his dry ears which causes some.. slippage when it comes to putting the balm on his ear from my fingertip. So now there's a pretty visible amount of balm residue around his ears on his head and even on his forehead. Chinchilla pee/bedding smells?

I recently got two chinchillas, and this is my first time taking care of them. When I bought them, I received FreshNews recycled paper cat litter. It helped absorb the smell however I noticed the chinchillas eating the litter. I changed the litter to CareFresh the paper bedding but then the cage smell seemed much stronger. cleaning chinchilla shelves

I am wondering the best way to clean the pine shelves in my cage.
I usually just wipe them off while cleaning and once a month I spray them with a 50/50 vinegar water mix then wipe them off.
I soak them in vinegar and water then sand them when I do a big clean or if I think they need it (approx every other month).... but I find both of these methods don't really remove the stains that I want to remove.
Am I not leaving the vinegar on long enough? how do I remove the stains?

Any tips?
Thanks!

I have two male chinchillas, Radish and Peanut. We have had them for roughly 3 years and they were a year and a half when we got them. They have always been housed together and they're well bonded (they love playing together and snuggling together etc)
Peanut has always been the most boisterous of the pair, he loved to madly hop around, play on his wheel and generally be a mad-dashing ball of fluff.
Radish is more relaxed, never far from the food bowl, always ready to nap.
As you can...

Black Friday Deals - Take my Money

Any vendors having Black Friday, Small Business Saturday or Cyber Monday sales for Chinchilla items?

Hi!

Hi everyone! So excited to have found this forum! Looks like there's a gold mine of knowledge in here and I'm excited to dig into it haha. My name is Danielle and this is Javier aka Javi. He's roughly a year and four months old a bit shy but warming up. We are still getting to know one another as I just got him from a local girl who appeared to be overwhelmed with chins. He was one of five living in one cage. She had 2 - 3 year olds, 2 -1 year olds and the other one year old female had a...

I have a question about what healthy urine should look like. I've had my male chinchilla for over a year, he's been to the vet and is healthy, however, his urine has always been a reddish brown color, is this normal?

Chin making loud sound

Hi everyone,

My boy Kumo is a VERY chatty ~10 yo chinchilla. Over the years I've gotten pretty familiar with most of the noises he makes and what they mean (you know...happy grunts during playtime, angry kacks when he sees the carrier because he hates the vet, warning calls to warn all the animals at the vet that the vet is awful...). He's a very communicative little guy.

However, he's been making a new noise that makes me jump to check on him every time he makes it. It's a loud...

Dry ears

One of my chins has some lighter gray areas on his outer ears, mainly on/near the edge. Is this a sign of dryness? I've been applying bag balm to his ears every other day or so, and I'm waiting to see any improvements. He also has a small pinkish red area at the base of the back of his ear (near his head) on each ear. It feels a little rough, so I apply some balm on that area too. It seems to be furless. I'd like to avoid any vet visits because he's already gone this month, but I will do it...

Bedding and sticks.

I currently have my two boys in their Critter Nation with no bedding, just the plastic pans and three litter pans with aspen shavings in them. They're getting a new cage with tile on one level and fleece on the other in December-January. The pans have signs of past chewing, as I am using the cage they came with (I got them off of Craigslist), but they haven't chewed them at all since I've given them much more stuff to chew on ( two hanging toys, a wooden ledge, wooden house, wooden hay...

Eastcoast Chinchilla care

Hello my name is Jamie. I have chinchilla's now as pets. I own my home and have a lot of free space since my children are off to university. I am thinking on opening a chinchilla rescue for the eastern provinces of Canada. I live in Miramichi NB. I know there are other rescues in Canada but I do not believe there are any close to my area. I am wondering if this is something people think there is a need for. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Orphan Kits

Good day,
I need help, please!

I took in a female Chinchilla and she had three babies. She killed the first one by bitting it aggressively.
She later tried to kill one of the other two babies but I stopped her in the process.

I decided it will be best to hand feed the kits. I have a few questions:
* Is it normal for a mom to turn on her babies? I did not touch them accept when I removed the first kit. They are in quite environment, where she had been living for a few months.
* How much...

Cleaning

This isn't anything serious, just a curiosity of mine and a few questions. :) How often do you guys do a minor cage cleaning? (Sweeping surfaces, replenishing food/hay/water, wiping up any urine, cleaning litter pans if needed.) Once a day, twice a day, or something different? How often do you deep clean? (Cleaning water bottles/food bowls, scrubbing litter pans, wiping down surfaces with 50/50 vinegar and water mix or something else.) Also, how often should I clean wooden shelves and how...

Itchy Chinchilla

Hi all!
I’m a new member here but have always turned to this website for help with my chinchillas. Well, I need help once again.
My 4 y/o chinchilla has recently been scratching her hip in the same place lately. There is a tiny spot where it looks like she’s been biting. It’s not bleeding and there isn’t any bare skin. I’m just concerned of what I should do to help her? She freaks when I try to look at it too.
—Another note; I took her to the ER last night because she was sprawling out on...

Frustrating Humidity Vol. 2

I thought I had the issue fixed. I just put the heater on low constantly, and it'd turn off when it hit 68 degrees F and it also kept the humidity down with the addition of two mini renewable dehumidifiers and a large tub of dehumidifying crystals that don't have an aroma to them. The humidity was at, I dunno, 45%? But then it started to slowly increase out of nowhere. I never changed anything. Now it's getting to the 58-61% range. Temp is still fine, varying between 66-68 F. I tried turning...

Hibiscus & Apple wood

I know the flowers of a hibiscus are ok but I haven't found anything in the forum regarding the wood.
Everyone says "apple wood" is ok, does that mean ANY AND ALL types of apple trees are fair game?

I am wondering if I can feed my chin the hibiscus and apple wood that I have in my back yard?

The apple tree produces an edible apple, no clue what kind, looks similar to a Fugi but not as sweet and with a tang to it. It's also a softer meat.

Pimple-like abscesses on privates

My chinchilla just went to the vet yesterday for symptoms of Pyometra, luckily she doesn't have it, but there was something wrong. We have pain medication and something to flush out gas/food as that was the vet's assumption. Today we found several "pimples" on her private area. She is red and swollen down there. Could this be an allergic reaction to medication? Please help!

Tile? Linoleum? Vinyl???

In January-February my chins will be getting a much-needed new cage. On the first floor I'll be putting a Bass Equipment metal pan and then placing flooring inside of it. I just don't know which type to use. I've heard people usually use tile, but I've also looked at linoleum and vinyl. I'm not sure which out of the three to use. Any help is appreciated.

What types of air purifiers are safe?

I heard that air fresheners are unsafe for chins, which is explainable, but that air purifiers aren’t. I’ve never used either before in the chinnie room, but I’m thinking about putting one in there to keep the room smelling fresh. Are there certain types of purifiers that I should avoid? Are smells that chinchillas like in particular?
Thanks

Giving eyedrops to chinchilla?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to see if anyone has experience giving a chinchilla eye drops? My chin has glaucoma and needs 1 drop in the AM and 1 in the PM and I'm struggling to give it to him. I mostly need a way that I can pin him down or grab him that won't hurt him, I know either way he'll be freaking out. He also has an eye lubricant he was prescribed but I haven't been giving it to him because it involves me going to his eye with my finger and he really freaks out then so if anyone may...

I just got back from taking my chins to the vet for an exam. (They're both healthy!) But, they peed in their carrier and got some urine on their tails and some on their body. How do I clean it off?

Giant Dog issues

Not as bad as the title sounds. Mr. Batou, my Great Pyrenees is huge. It's impossible to find a halter for him...even harder to find collars.

The other night I almost bought him a doggie costume though. Almost. It was the Staypuft Marshmallow Man. Perfect for a giant white dog. So, I got out the tape and was measuring him.

My three chins are my fav little babies.
I have had Opie and gizmo since December 2018 and they are both very small. Opie is tiny actually. My third is Roo, I bought him in February 2019 (he was a Valentine’s Day present actually). Roo has his own double CN. Opie and gizmo have their own double CN.
I really want to get the 3 of them together and turn 2 doubles into a triple with the last level as an extra. The trouble is when I first got Roo i has quarantined him and then did not put enough...

Massive amount of missing fur?

My chinchilla has a massive amount of missing fur on his back and I am very concerned. He has a cage mate he was very bonded with and i’m wondering if maybe they could’ve got into it? Please direct me on what this could be? They’ve since been separated.

Three questions

1. Would my two bonded male chins still need cuddle buddies?

2. I know some people feed their chins 2-3 types of hay. I only feed my boys 2nd cutting timothy, but should I add some other type?

3. How many apple sticks a week is too much?

So I was thinking about making my own fleece liners for my chinchillas cage but I’m not very good at sewing. I was wondering if it is safe for the liners not be sewed but just tucked under the trays on the edges?

Advice on playtime and room setup?

Hello,
I noticed on some chinchilla blogs, stories and videos the owners let their chinnies free in their room, hallway, or staircases for playtime. What really bewildered me is how, if they are, they are able to keep their chins away from unhealthy objects to chew on. Also, how do they clean the wood or carpet when their little guys decide it’s time to go potty?

Currently, I have my chinchillas in a small room with both of their cages against the wall. This leaves some room in the...

The Debate On Playtime

I know I just posted a thread on playtime, but after some research, I've realized that there's a LOT of different opinions on this, and as a new chin owner, I'd like to get some opinions and tips on what to do. Now, some people say every day, a few times a week, or none at all as "They are prey animals and don't really enjoy the open areas for exercise. They prefer to stay hid. Also most injury or accident happen during out of cage time." What do you guys think? How often should a chin be...

Treat?

Is it safe to give my chin a pinch of crushed rosehips, whole oats, rolled oats, pearled barley, and golden flax seeds, as a mixture every once in a while?

Playtime

I've wanted to let my chins out for playtime, even though there's no toys or anything for them outside of the cage yet. I already have a gate made out of hardware cloth and wood blocking them from accessing the other half of the laundry room. My current issue now is that, from a few escapes, they tend to crawl underneath the cage and nibble at the walls. It's extremely difficult to get them back into the cage and keep an eye on them since it's hard to look at what they're doing behind the...

Chin testicle larger than the other.

While I was socializing with my chins, I noticed that one of them had a pretty obvious size difference when it comes to his testicles. One of them was small/normal, pretty much the same size as his brother's. But the other was around double the size. It was hard to get a good look as he is the skittish one and he's not used to being handled AT ALL, so it's almost impossible to hold him in a safe angle to check. It hasn't seemed to get any larger over the past couple weeks, but it does look...

Rehoming Mosaic Female Chinchilla-FL Panhandle

Hello all! I am looking to rehome my ~1.5/2 year old female mosaic chinchilla at this time, as I have 4 chinchillas total but the other 3 are males and share a space, so she is currently living alone, and I just do not have the time for her that I feel she deserves as a single chinchilla.

She is a super sweet lady with some very unique markings. I am not asking for any $ for her, just want to be sure she is going to a good, responsible home. If needed I would be happy to send her off with...

Question on Litter

Hello all!

I am a new hedgie owner and have found this forum so helpful in helping my Millie get used to her new environment. I had a question regarding teaching her to use a litter box (if possible at all really). Generally, I wanted to see if anyone had trained their hedgie or what I could do to help the situation. I had just put a little dish with litter in and she also tried to eat it so I immediately took it out. Any suggestions are appreciated!

So my Chinchilla has started to chew the tip of her tail. How do I get her to stop? She chews that she's making her tail bleed and using the hairs as bristles. I keep coming home to find a new bloody masterpiece on her wood shelf.

Loose stool?

Hi guys! Writing about my chin chowder. For a few weeks now his cage has been developing a strong odor which I refer to as “petting zoo” odor & im not sure if he’s got a loose stool. His poop is getting on his hut and the fleece as if he’s stepping in it and tracking it. He’s mosaic so his fur stains easily and was never perfect as he was a rescue. But does he have diarrhea? I’ve never experienced this before. My other chin is in the level above him (they’re separated, not friends lol) and...

Large Lump on Leg (might be cancer)

Hey guys. So I am technically a new member but have been following posts on this site for years as I raised my chinchillas and had questions here and there. My first girl that I got, Mochi, just recently developed a large lump on her back leg right around the knee joint. It happened over night. So, this isn’t an issue really, more of a query as far as behavior.
My chinchi, Chinchi, will scoot her butt on wet towels. Chin putting head in others chins ear?

Hi all,

Our chins are perfectly healthy and active happy boys but I noticed a strange behaviour earlier and was wondering if it's just a chin thing or something I should watch out for? One of my boys put his nose into the other chins ear and it looked as though he was rooting around in there.

Does this sound like something to watch? It's the first time he's done it and I haven't seen him do it since. They have been displaying any other odd behaviours e.g. scratching/ head shaking.

He is...

Bee Pollen

I just purchased a treat sampler/variety pack from a seller on ETSY. It contains about 10 treats. One of the treats is Bee Pollen. I have never heard or read about this as being a chin treat. The rest of the treats are the typical dried treats like hibiscus, rose hips, goji berries, oats, etc. Has anyone given their chins Bee Pollen before? Do they eat it as is or do you have to mix it up in their food?

Chin Fight

Hello,

I have 2 male chinchillas who are both 6 year old. I have owned them both since they were kits and they are actually brothers. They have spent their entire lives together in a double FN and always got a long great cuddling etc. This morning I woke up to barking and when I went over to them I could tell they had gotten into a fight- Some small cuts on each of them and fur slips. They were still chasing one another and I immediately separated the two of them, but I am just so...

RIP Spark

I have not been on this forum for a long time and have only posted once before (the time Sparkle jumped off the balcony and slid down the porch roof) but would like to add to this memorial page,

Wee Spark passed this week, and will be joining his brother under the apple tree.

My life has changed so much in the years I had you. You and Guss were my first pets and put up with a lot of changes- new cages, new houses, new dog, new human babies! You have brought such joy to our lives. From...

Lymphoma

My 16 year old chinchilla was diagnosed with lymphoma last week. The mass on her neck is getting larger and I'm concerned about her being in pain. Does anyone have experience with this?

What to do in summer?

Is there a temperature in which you shouldn't let your chin out for play time? I want to do what's best for my boy :)

Small Bump on Tail

So, we were on vacation last week and my mom was watching our pets. When we got back I noticed a small, like pimple sized, bump on Jack's tail. The only reason I even noticed it is because it moves the fur at a strange angle. I googled and the only thing I can find is abscess, but it doesn't look like those pictures. I waited a few days and it is not getting bigger but not getting smaller. He is acting normally, eating, playing, etc. Any ideas what it could be?

Frustrating humidity

So, the new arrivals to the household are here. Bandit & Buttons, the dynamic brother duo. I thought I'd be the most excited person alive once they got here and got a little settled in.. but then the atmosphere had to mess everything up. I have a dry heater running and an AC (that's suitable for the room I have space-wise) with a dehumidifying function. Those two are on A LOT. But, for some unknown reason, the humidity won't change from 56%. The temp control is fine, it usually stays around...

Loud breathing

Each time I pick up my old 16-17 year old girl she starts breathing loudly. I don't hear her doing it after she starts resting again but she does it when active too. So two nights now during play time she starts this. She does it when I pick her up to medicate her as well. She gets 1.5mg/ml of metacam at .1 ml twice a day for pain and inflammation for her chronic bumblefoot. She also gets 50mg/ml of gabapentin at .1 ml twice a day for pain. She gets sodium chloride twice a day every day, and...

Safe Wood

Hello guys!! i have been wanting to make ledges for my chin. I went to home depot and I didn't see any kiln dried wood, I searched online and only found this. If this wood is no Bueno, which wood can i purchase from Home Depot or Lowes? Do I need to prep the wood? I know I need to sand the edges down. I am new to this so any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.

He is...

This issue has had me worrying for hours on end, and I probably won't get much sleep tonight. I just want my fluffy children to be okay. Any tips on how I can lower the enemy that is humidity?
