Playtime setup

My chin his cage is currently in the living room which is impossible to chinproof (in september he will be in my bedroom since I'm moving) and I currently haven't let him out for playtime yet, he is now 6 months old (a hetro beige chin).

He is very social and loves jumping on your hands to chill there for a while but the moment I try to pick him up (not with the tail) he jumps away and I cant really hold him since he is just sitting on my hands so I'm scared(and not going) to take him out the cage with him just sitting on my hands when he can jump of at any time and hurt himself.
Everyone advised my to just gently hold him but I cant get as far as holding him, and I would like to be able to hold him so if a vet trip is needed I can get him safely out of his cage.

But since I can't really pick him up I'm scared to let him out for playtime, I was planning to carry him to the bathroom and let him have playtime there but what that's impossible if I can't cary him, I currently have a carrier but it only opens on the top and he doesn't want to go in, so I'm planning to buy one that opens on the top and the side so in the carrier is also a problem.

So I was thinking about setting up a playpen in the living room and with a kind of staircase so he can climb in and out it on his own, but since there isn't much room around his cage the set up would be long but not wide.
And even then I would be scared that he will try to jump from his staircase over the playpen since the door of his cage is about 50cm from the ground. And what should I do if he doesn't want to return on his own?

Pee stains on fur on feet and tail

Hi,

There's pee stains on my chinchillas feet and tail from walking over their puddles. The fur is yellowish brown. It looks pretty disgusting and I'm wondering how I can clean it up. Thanks : )

Free in Philadelphia (Conshy) Area

Our beloved Chin, Squirrel, passed away this weekend.

I have 1 large unopened bag of Oxbow food and an open bag of oxbow food to give away. There is also an open jar of Blue Cloud dust. I live in the Conshy area, and would ask that you pick it up.

New cage/playpen setup - help with ideas, please!

Hi everyone! Once again I turn to this super-helpful forum for suggestions.

This summer I will be moving into my very first house. This is the first time I will have a choice in terms of where to put my chins...up until now I just separated half of my living room as the chin-exclusive resort.

My first question is in regards to where to keep them. I am leaning towards still setting them up in my living room, as this is the set up they are used to and they quite seem to like to watch TV (or watch me reacting to the TV) as I unwind after work. I also feel like I interact with them a lot more if they are in a central part of the house.
The other choice is to chin-proof part of the guest room that I was going to use as a home-office. However, I try not to take too much work home so would not be in that room as often unless I make the point of going there and they would get far less interaction.

Thoughts?

My second question has to do with the set up. For my current set up, I took a tarp and laid it over the area, and covered it in fleece. I took two Marshall's animal play pens and set that around my Critter nation as a permanent play area. Chins have free roam of their area whenever I'm in the same room to keep an eye out for them. Whenever I have to clean, I just change out the fleece and then clean whatever has gotten down to the tarp. I'd like to keep a similar set up (my chins have really like this one compared to being taken to a play area) but would appreciate suggestions in:

1. Waterproof material - The tarp I am using was more of an afterthought as I was trying prevent my girl from marking the area in my apartment...as well as not give her access to carpet (she started pulling the strings apart)

2. The playpen - There isn't anything wrong with the Marshall pen, but since there isn't a door, I basically have to go over a fence that goes as high as my waist. For about a month when I was dealing with a leg injury that got quite tricky to deal with, so I wanted to see if anybody had better ideas.

Thank you!

Help, think my chin has a fungus

I have a 4 year old chinchilla and a month ago I bought her a baby for company. After a few initial squabbles they're now happy together from what I can see and hear. However last night I noticed the baby suddenly has a tiny bald spot below one eye and all around her nose and whiskers. Her whiskers one one side don't look that smooth either and having had a good look this morning she seems to have quite a lot of fur missing under her jaw too. She obviously hasn't chewed it out herself but could the older one have gone a bit extreme with grooming or even pulled it out in a fight? The rest of her fur is perfect.

I'm concerned it's a fungus but surely it wouldn't appear that quick, and my other one is fine. I'm afraid they've already had a dustbath and they share it so it's too late to do anything about that, other than replace the dust. Is this something I can sort myself without a vet visit? I have read to put Tinactin in the dust bath, but I'm in the UK and we don't seem to sell it, is there an alternative? Also my main problem is that all the things I've read say to throw out anything wooden, but the whole cage is wooden as they live free range in a converted shed and I can hardly throw that away! Some advice would be very gratefully received!

Fleece for Chinchillas

Hi, I was planning on getting a Chinchilla soon and was wondering about fleece for Chinchilla cages that have wire bottoms.

The things I’m mostly concerned about are washing them and how much it would cost overall for the upkeep of the fleece. Thanks!

Bedding for Chinchilla Cage

Hi, I was planning on getting a Chinchilla soon and I was wondering what type of bedding you should use if a cage has wire bottoms. I’m not sure how well you could put aspen shavings on top of the wire (and if that would help at all).

A lot of people I’ve seen have recommended fleece bedding, but I’m not really sure about the cleaning of it and how much it would cost to upkeep it. Is someone able to explain that for me? Thanks!

Why is he doing this every night now?

I got my chinchilla a few months ago at the beginning of the new year.
I noticed just once after about two months that he sprayed urine. I didn't think much of it, but this past month he's been doing it daily.

I never actually see him do it, but every morning I notice it.
His cage has wheels on it so I wheel him into the restroom area. It's dark and quiet at night. (My hedgehog is too scared to come out when he hears my chinchilla play.) There is always pee sprayed on the counter when I wake up. Today there was a pile of urine on the floor. He typically is spraying from the same area on the same side of the cage. I also noticed he's not using his litter box like he use to.

What do I do? :(
Should I maybe move his litter box to the side hes spraying?

Is mine odd?

I finally picked up my little guy, Gambit, last Monday. He's 9 weeks old and an ebony. After I got him home I put him in his palace. He seemed really excited and was jumping all over excitedly almost immediately. I left him alone for the first 5 days except for occasionally observing him and talking to him. When I put more hay or food in his cage he seemed more curious about me and the open cage door (ferret nation) but I didn't bother him too much. He did try to dive bomb out the door once!

Last night (night 6) I placed my hands in his cage. He was so excited to play with me and instantly started nibbling at me and jumping/ climbing on me. I keep one door open and block the opening with my body while letting him sit on me. I didn't attempt to pet him, though.

Today I did the same things with my arms/ hands and slowly worked up to petting him. In no time he was loving his cheeks scratched and eventually his whole body! It's only been a week! He even fell asleep in my cradled arms while I was petting him and started this little light chirp sound. I'm amazed at how quickly this little guy is being affectionate.

I'm loving how he goes from being this little crazy Rambo jumping around in his cage at night to falling asleep on me during the day and loving getting scratched.

So two questions.... I have this wire hay rack that hangs off the side of the cage. He constantly knocks it off and all the hay ends up on the floor. He doesn't touch the hay if it's on the floor. What kind of hay holders do others use? I prefer in cage since it's slightly less mess.

Second... he won't take a dust bath! I put roughly a half inch of blue cloud dust in a plastic fish bowl shaped bowl. He'll walk in but eventually jumps out without taking a bath. I eventually take it out because it's plastic and he start s to chew it. Should I leave it in longer? Maybe not enough dust?

Chewie for chin' supplies

Hiya Guy's :) ...
Wow, it's been several months or so since I checked in so I made it a point to get back on the board for a while :-). Little miss Rain Chilla' is doing good & as of late I've been ordering a lot of chin' supplies from www.chewy.com . I don't know how many of y'all have looked into it or have been ordering from them yourselves but that's one of the reasons I decided to drop in and bring the subject up.

I recently rebuilt Rains cage with this 12" exercise wheel & these 2 toys as well as numerous different types of treats for her :) ...

Cages

Hi guys!
I recently got my chinchilla at the beginning of the new year. He's now 10 months old. He's happy, active, playful, but so extremely loud.
I understand that chinchillas will ALWAYS make noise. (I have a hedgehog who use to be so noisy until I did research and changed his cage a bit. He now doesn't wake me up in the middle of the night because the noise is moderate.)
I can't seem to figure out what's best for a chinchilla though.
His wheel is not a problem. It make's just as much noise as my hedgehogs.
I purchased a cage from Petsmart by the brand "All Living Things". When he hops around the metal tends to be extremely loud and disruptive. He has fleece at the bottom and it's three stories.
Are there cages that can absorb the shock of his hops better to be less noisy? Ir read ferret nation can help this, but I don't want to spend $200 if it's ultimately the same thing; or is it best to find a blueprint online and build a home for him out of wood?

First Time!

Hi Everyone,
Double whammy for me as I’ve never introduced myself on a forum before and have never had a Chin....until last Wednesday evening!
This site has been such a great help already, thank you to all who share their knowledge, advice and stories.
We’ve (me, husband and 10 year old daughter) have adopted a handsome boy called Storm who’s 3 years old. Tonight we had him out for playtime and I really don’t know who had more fun :)
Here’s to learning more from you wonderful people and to being part of the Chinny world...even though I’m a long way away (UK)!

eye infection???

I saw today that my oldest chin, Cass, was messing with his eye. I looked at it and saw that it was a bit watery and looked like it had a little bit white goop coming from it. It doesn't look like it got worse from this morning. I have to wait until Tuesday to take him to the vet. Any suggestions on how to keep it clean and healthy until then? I had a hamster with an eye problem and we washed it with saline a couple times a day, but I don't want to do anything until I get some advice.

samedi 10 mars 2018

Could this become a problem?

I've had my two rescue girls for about a year and a half now. JoJo is definitely the boss of the two, and has always humped Daphne at times. I'm not sure humping is the correct term; there is no movement once she gets on Daphne's back. And it mainly seems to happen when they are out of the cage, although that's when I'm usually with them when they are awake.

Twice in the past few days when they were out of the cage, Daphne was not having any of JoJo's humping, and she stood up to her. They stand facing each other, and one of the times they may have been nibbling the other's face. Their mouths were definitely touching, but I don't think either bit. No sound, and lots of running around afterward.

Could this lead to something bad or are they just playing? I've just never seen them do this before.

Thanks!
Trish

Chinchilla Eye Looks Wet

Hello!

Pepe, my chinchilla, looks as if the area around his right eye is wet but it is not. It has been like this for a few days now and there is no redness or discharge. He's perfectly happy and shows no unusual signs (active, eats, poops, etc.) but I did notice his teeth were more on the yellow side (and I'm aware his teeth should be dark orange).

Could dental issues be the reason why his eye looks as if its wet? I switched his diet to a much healthier one (I was not giving him as much calcium) and I'm hoping this will help.

If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know. Thank you!

First Time Posting Questions!

Thank you so much!

Help! Mom died - kits 3 weeks old - need foster mom!

I was given mom by someone who knew nothing about chins. She was very ill and (unknown to me) pregnant. She gave birth, but despite my best efforts mom and one baby didn't make it. The baby passed at birth, but mom just passed yesterday. I now have 2 kits - one male , one female - both light cream almost white - They're 3 wks old and not interested in hand feeding. Does anyone have a lactating mom with kits of comparable age/size? I live in the northeast corner of GA about an hour away from both TN and AL. I want nothing in return except a good home so these babies can have a fighting chance... PLZ HELP!

Missing or wet fur round eye

Hi we have just addicted 2 chinchillas they have quite bad history both have dermertitus which is better than it was, but we have got them home today and one of there eyes looked strange. Taking a closer look it looks like the fur is either wet and flat or missing :( anyone any ideas what it could be . His actual eye looks ok now I’m wondering if he had a problem that’s cleared up but it wasn’t mentioned.

Help! Mom has died and kits are 3 weeks old

I was given a mom chin who was not doing well... She was on a poor diet and I was told she was having occasional siezures. Turned out she was expecting. She gave birth to 3 kits but one didn't make it. This morning I found mom had died. The kits are three weeks old. Do I need to feed a milk replacer? If so what and how often?

Dental Help

Hi

I have a 4 year old male chinchilla, Ollie. Last month, I noticed that his breath smelled terrible, he wasn't eating, and he was drooling. I took him to the vet. A dental procedure was done and the vet found that Ollie's teeth were very overgrown and he had one very long point which cut into his cheek. His gums were quite inflamed too. All teeth and his points were burred down. We were feeding him critical care and giving him pain medication and antibiotics after. Now it's been a little over 1 month. He is eating some hay and pellets. But I've noticed that he is dropping a lot of his pellets, just like before when his teeth were overgrown. He's not chewing on his sticks like he normally did. I'm starting to get worried. I'm wondering if I need to take him back to the vet again or if healing after a dental procedure takes time before they are "back to normal."He is running on his wheel and around the room like nothing is wrong though. I haven't noticed any bad smell from his mouth but I've noticed that his mouth area is a bit wet sometimes.

Chin kit weaning/separating questions

After being told my boyfriend's chinchillas (male and female) were both neutered, we came home to 2 chinchilla kits about 6 months after we had adopted them. Surprise!
They were born either late January 19th or early January 20th, so they are just about 6 weeks now. We have one female kit and one male kit housed with mom while dad is on his own for the time being.
They are both eating well, drinking water, and growing well. As long as they are 200g am I supposed to separate them immediately at 8 weeks? They are eating pellets and hay on their own and I sometimes see them drinking from mom but most often I see them eating normal food.
I just really don't want them to breed with each other! If they are a healthy weight should I separate them before 8 weeks? I've been trying to read as much as I can about the weaning process but I want to be 100% clear as the 8 week mark is coming closer and closer. I will be sure to measure them soon to see how everything is going there as well.
Thanks for the help!

Holding my chin

Hello,
I have a 5 month old hetro beige chinchilla, and he is very social he loves to jump on my arms when I interact with him while he is in his cage but I haven't been able to pick him up on my own, and when he jumps on my arms I can't hold him because he jumps off when I try it and I cant let him sit on just my hands without holding him because he can jump of at a bad time and get hurt or escape. I really want to be able to pick him up for emergencies and to let him out for playtime, but I tried scooping him up but he jumps away then and I've tried to get him to get used to the feeling of a hand on his belly while petting him and he is okay when I pet his belly but when I try to pick him up like that so I can also support his bottom legs he makes a noice and jumps away. I am really clueless as what I can try because I do want to be able to pick him up if needed. Thank you in advance!

Hello everyone!

Hi all! My name is Christina and i am from Pennsylvania. I am a owner of a 12 year old male chinchilla. His name is Chalupa. I have had him almost 12 years. When I was 16 years old I begged my mom for him, she said no unless I got a job. Of course, I got a job haha. My first job (subway) was because of Chalupa. I love him very very much!

Chin housing...giving them more room

I am researching getting chinchillas and trying to give them an environment that is as enriching as possible and would love ideas. I'm not a fan of animals in cages and also think chinchillas being small, destructive, pooping everywhere, unable to wear harnesses, climate/temperature needs and our busy lives in general makes it hard to fathom how to give them enough out of cage time and maybe my answer will end up that they just aren't right for me however i remain fascinated by these creatures and would love some rescue chins.

I realize some people have many chins and they do not get out of cage time, I would say generally I’ve seen on most sites etc people say their chins get out for half an hour a day and many are happy with this however I would like to give them a lot of play time. I would love to replicate as much as possible an enclosure that has some aspects of their natural habitat or at least lets them exhibit their natural behaviours.

So far it seems there is no way around them having a cage, the bigger the better, with a companion.

Converting a room seems impossible as they are said to chew through walls. If they had a very enriching environment such as similar to the pictures vinyl or something easy clean how destructive would they still be? Around the walls could be play pens or (on the cheap) cardboard walls to protect skirting boards.. the window/windowsill would be hard to protect though. And I am talking in the sense is it really no matter what, no matter how extreme you go (within a realistic budget), too hard to leave them on their own for a few hours with just checking in on them? If they had a room such as I’ve pictured are they going to bother the walls too?

In the wild they sleep during the day so cage time then seems practical (although that said, even my bunnies should be active dawn and dusk, they have a huge fenced in yard and can often be found outside most of the time mind you I suppose im at work when they are sleeping) and in the twilight hours chins in the wild are out foraging for food which is something pets don’t need to do.

I had wondered if any of the treat puzzles were interesting to chins…from treat balls where they have to roll it to get food out to any of the cat enrichment/puzzles that you can buy where they have to work a bit for the food.

I love the “Trixie natural living” range of things you can buy which are available here in new zealand and also these photos give an idea of what id love to accomplish.

Another idea (dont shoot me!) would be is it possible to have an indoor/outdoor home. I don’t think the temperatures where I live are too extreme for chinchillas, rain/damp would be the main issue to work around, heat would only be an issue for a very short part of the year...it would hardly get too hot. Let’s just say for example you had an insulated room with perhaps a cat door on, and there was a run outside… surely if the temperatures or conditions outside were not ideal they were stay indoors if they had the choice?

What are your thoughts? I've tried to attach some ideas (indoor) but not sure if i've attached them right...guess il see.

Please help. my chinchilla is behaving strangely

I went away on vacation and left my chinchilla with an experienced breeder.

I brought him home two days ago, and I could tell right away he was acting strangely. He was slow- didn't want to jump. Almost like he was slightly dizzy- not falling over or anything, just slower and hesitant. He also seems to be grooming himself a lot.

I was really scared, but I wanted to give it a day or two to see what was going on.

Then, last night, I took him out to play. He was great! He acted with his usual amount of playfulness and speed.

THEN, just this morning, I took him out and fed him some critical care (he is eating, but my breeder said it might help him get some extra nutrients if he isn't well).
He took it fine, then I put him back in his cage.
All the sudden he was back to how he was... slowww movements. Almost like he as on a sedative, didn't want to walk much.

I am so scared but I don't even know what to ask for from the vet when i bring him in. You know how vets are... She is experienced with chins, but I just don't know what I would ask her to test him for. If the stress of me giving him critical care made him act like that again, I am so afraid that a vet handling him would kill him or something.

Tail biting

Hi, I rescued 4 chinchillas a year ago and have been experiencing problems!
The rescue was adult pair and two young from two different litters.
I was a little worried when they arrived as all 4 were in a cage together and it was a very tall parrot type cage with wheels, black painted bars and plastic shelves that had been chewed a lot.
One ceramic food bowl between them and the girl was very sketchy on what food they had been on and said that she had ran out but was same as what i showed her i used for my other chins, they were also on a biscuit type treat that they seemed to go mad for.
Within a couple of days of having them in quarantine away from my other chins just in case, i noticed a real pecking order for the food so put in some more bowls. The adult male was peeing in the food bowl and on the hay.
I also noticed that one of the younger chins had what looked like a twitch on her side and she was going down to lower levels and looking sorry for herself.
On inspection i found her to be pregnant and started taking the two younger ones out and putting them in a seperate cage with a center partition so they would be close but couldnt get to each other, this cage was placed in front of the adults cage so not to cause any upset.
This went on for a week or so and one morning very early she had a little baby girl.
Now obviously this baby is the result of interbreeding and im not sure who the father is as there were two males!
She is now a year old and is very large.

The adult male tried mating with the adult female and something went very wrong and i had to take her to vets as she was bleeding badly down there, i think it went in the wrong place. The vet had a really good feel of her tummy and while this was happening she squealed really loudly and within a couple of days she had blood pouring from her mouth and she had died early hours.

Then i noticed the adult male wasnt eating hay and his front teeth looked long so back to the vet and the guy gave him too much anesthetic as he died as soon as i got him back home.

The young male is tiny and is not eating much hay but does eat all his feed, he is very active and seems happy when out his cage.

The young female with the baby started chasing and pulling the fur on her baby when they were out and this started to stress the baby out so i started removing to a separate cage at about 4-5 months old.

Yesterday i noticed that the mum has started biting her tail near the base and had two bald spots and some scratches, today she has bitten into the skin and it look raw!

I am snowed in here since yesterday and will be going to see a vet tomorrow if i can get out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, i have owned chins for 16 years and have never seen such bad condition chins and have never seen tail biting like this before!

thankyou
Rich

Randomly crying and racing around?

Hiya,
So recently one of my boys has developed a strange habit, every now and again he will randomly start crying and race around his cage, occasionally doing a little hop or two. He seems to be panicking as when he's racing round he regularly misjudges and bumps into things or slips off ledges. Originally I thought it was just when he was asleep and he had a nightmare or something, but I've been observing him more and he does it when he's awake too now.

I check him over every time it happens and he seems perfectly normal, he's eating, drinking, and pooping as usual, his teeth look fine and I've checked him for fur rings, the only thing that's odd is his crying and racing round?

It started out once every few days but it's been increasing, he does it a couple of times a day now and it scares the life out of me every time.
The only thing I can think of is maybe he's spooked since I brought another chin home (about 2 months ago) to try and bond him with, but he does it even when I've moved the newer chin into another room?

Does anybody have any experiences with their chin behaving like this and know what it could be?

Loved & Spoiled Chinchillas for Sale w/All Supplies in Oakland County Michigan

After much consideration I've decided it would be in our chinchillas & our best interest to find them a new loving home... my mother has been ill and we have some big changes planned which will take up all my extra time & remodel our basement where the chinchillas live.

4 female chinchillas, born Summer 2015 (I have actual birthdates & baby photos). Amethyst (Violet TOV), Myst (silver mosaic), Ruby (pearl), & Onyx/Nixie (ebony). I purchased them all as kits from the same breeder, they are unrelated.

They will come with their Double Midwest Critter Nation Cage with Stand. I have custom made ledges & poo guards, using chin safe poplar lumber. I special ordered stainless steel bolts, screws, and washers to attach them so the girls wouldn’t ever have contact with any potentially dangerous metals. The bottom pan is original, the top is a 2.5” stainless w/cut out from Bass Equipment. Metal chinchilla wheel purchased new direct from Flying Saucer Wheels. Stainless bowls and glass water bottles are included. They use kiln dried pine pellets from Tractor Supply & pine bedding. They eat Manna Pro Rabbit food (also from Tractor Supply), and have 2nd cutting hay from Small Pet Select (will come with an almost full 25lb box and all remaining pellets in an airtight screw top bucket). Assortment of chinchilla safe treats, & any chinchilla dust I have left will be included, along with the two containers I use for their dust baths.

Serious interest only please. Asking $350 for the girls & everything listed above. Be sure you have a big enough vehicle to transport their cage and safe containment for them for the drive. We live in Commerce Township MI 48382, you can use the clubhouse address for our neighborhood if you’d like to googlemap it: 6011 Majestic Oaks Dr, Commerce Township, MI 48382

Help, please!

Hello,

My chinchilla (chalupa) is a 12 year old male. 2 days ago I had noticed his penis was out of the sheath. I checked for fur rings- did not find any and put it back in. Over the last two days every few hours the penis comes back out and I gently put it back in with no trouble. This has never happened before. My friend is a vet tech and checked his teeth, felt for any abnormalities and did not see any. Checked the bedding and he is urininating so the penis is working. I have taken him out several times and he is alert and peppy as always. I am worried because he is not taking treats though which he generally loves. Why is this happening? Is it something To be concerned about? Chinchilla does not seem to be in any discomfort.

Any advice welcome, please!
