Average vs Mini vs Dwarf

What is the difference between a average sized, a mini, and a dwarf chinchilla? I know that dwarfism is a homozygous recessive trait, but is it the same thing as a mini? Or is a mini just a petite chinchilla?

What is the weight difference between an average sized chinchilla and a mini?

Chinchilla puffy eyes

Two days ago I noticed my chinchilla had puffy spots underneath her eye, I got some saline and dabbed it around and on the eye to help get rid of anything in there irritating it and it helped but now her other eye has become puffy too and I'm unsure what to do, she's acting fine and it doesn't seem to be irritating her, going to weigh her now and see if she's lost any weight but she's been eating and acting fine overall, there was also some eye booger/goop but her cagemate also has a bit of...

Room Temperature??

I’m curious to know what the room temperature should be?... My chins will be housed in my living room area and being that it is winter here, I tend to turn the temperature to 80 degrees to knock off the chill... should I buy a thermometer to keep track of the temperature?

Hi, has anyone ever used Tmp-Smz for an antibiotic?

My vet prescribed Tmp-Smz for an ear infection and Zymox Otic ear cleaner for wax in his ear, has anyone ever used either of these? Thanks

One red ear

I have a chinchilla names millow she about 4to6 months old and a day ago was sleeping when I went to go check on her and on ear was completely red. She is a light gray color and her ears are a pink like gray but this ear was red with vain but after she started running around her cage and moving it went back to normal color. She did recently have some dry feet but there no longer cracked. Should I be worried

Warning Behaviour?

I have two male chinchillas (10 months and 14 months) neither are neutered and they are a bonded pair (rescued). Recently the 10 month old has started trying to mount the 14 month old (who isnt all too pleased about it, as you can imagine). It started as a little thing but has progressively gotten more feisty. Is this just adolescent behaviour, trying to assert dominance or could it be an early warning sign that they may start fighting?

This mainly happens during playtime- in their cage...

Need some advice and help

Ok so this might be a bit long. So I’ve had a chinchilla for around 10 years. Not long ago my last one died and about 5 months ago i bought a new one. But he’s kind of a little ass lol. I love him of course and he’s just recently finally let me start to pet him, I try to show him a lot of attention so maybe he chills out. He just is irritated easily. my old chinchilla never barked and was always calm. This one, if you touch him to much he instantly barks, he’ll hold grudges for awhile, won’t...

Home needed for 1 1/2 year old male Chinchilla in Rochester, NY or surrounding areas

Hi,

We are looking for a forever home for Dash. We would really like him to go to someone who already is knowledgeable on Chinchillas and maybe already has one or two, so he has companions.

Dash is from a pet store and was sold to us a standard grey but he is unique - as while he has grey in him, he has a lot of white as well and is the lightest standard grey I have ever seen. Happy to share pictures.

He is healthy and very personable. While like most Chins, he doesn't like to be picked...

Ringworm!! Advice needed!!!

Hello I need some advice regarding ringworm. I got two baby chins two months ago and three days into having them I noticed one of them (Disney) was starting to lose hair around his nose. Turns out they had pretty bad ringworm.
Sadly we lost Disney 3 weeks ago. Walt his brother finished his 28 day treatment of oral anti fungal medication and the vet gave him the all clear for ringworm.
Unfortunately my partner and I now have ringworm. My partner in the past day seems to be getting it...

Noise

I have had my chinchilla Sheldon and his new pal taco in different cages in the same room spread apart. It’s been 3 days and tonight they are making a run of noise seeming almost at each other. Doesn’t sound like a bark but almost a purr. They have been seemingly to frantically try to get to each other. Taco running side to side at the front of his cage and Sheldon which I have never seen climbed the wall of his cage up behind his wheel to get closer to taco.

Beds

I was talking to someone today who mentions that. Beds like hammocks with poor support can break a chinchillas back??? Is this tru? I see most people have them for their chinchillas.

Teeth

How can you tell if teeth are over grown??? Once over grown must they be trimmed down or will extra toys grind them down???

How soon

How soon should I be letting my new chinchilla out for play time?

Question about fur loss

Hello I had a question about my 11 year old chinchilla Chinta. She is housed with another chin who's only 8 months old and they get along pretty well. . Sometimes they argue about food but that's it.
Now on Chinta's tail on the top, the fur is missing in a strip.
the skin doesn't look to be irritated or infected and I don't believe
shes been over grooming herself.
I was curious if anyone has seen this before or if you'd have any ideas as to what I should do to help the fur grow back.

Sneezing without mucus or drooling

Hi Everyone, I‘m hoping some experienced chin owners could possible help me.
My chinnie started sneezing and not acting himself roughly a month ago. I immediately took him to the vet and they diagnosed him with URI. He was on antibiotic, probiotics and critical care 2x per day for 10 days. After finishing the medicine his left eye the fur seemed matted compared to his right. I immediately took him back to the vet for sneezing still & his eye. He was then put on eye drops 3x a day for 10...

How to regain trust

I just got a chinchilla for the first time and it’s been a bumpy road. The first few days weren’t the best she was in a dog cage cues her cage hadn’t gotten here yet and she was constantly bothered by my family. Once her cage got here she started show signs of pain and at first I thought it was bloat but the sings stoped and she started feeling better. But as far as bonding it hasn’t been well. She naturally curious but also easily scared. I’ve scared her multiple times during play time. I...

Lava Ledges

Usually I make sure my two chins have two lava ledges at all times, but they've already chewed through one and broke it off the mount (now it's just a chunk on the cage floor) and about halfway chewed through the second one. During these Coronavirus times, I'm not sure if I'll be able to find more lava ledges for them that aren't overpriced. I tried a brand other than Kaytee (I know, I know, terrible brand, but their lava ledges are decent) and it was pretty good, but I found it in a pet...

Just Wondering if this is normal...

When I scratch my chin’s belly or side he closes his eyes in “approval” and enjoys it. But sometimes he will squeak and twitch his head. Is this normal? He is acting perfectly normal but wondering if this is like a purr?

Hey everyone!
It's been forever since I've posted on here.
As of right now I'm stuck at home for two weeks or so. I've decided this will be a great opportunity to revamp my girls cages and actually move them each into their own full ferret nations!
Right now I have one Chin on each level(4 girls all together). We just finished the ledges and hidey homes, cuddle tubes and cuddle ledges will be next.
I might also do some names plaques.

Both won't eat any hay

Hi so my two rescue girls are settling in really well but I've had them for almost 2 weeks and they still won't eat hay. They eat pellets (supreme science selective) but won't touch their hay. I've tried meadow hay (pets at home) and a meadow hay/timothy blend (also pets at home) and timothy hay (science selective) but nothing. They won't even touch. I tried those hard "cookie" type things which are 100% hay and still nothing. I tried a hay rack, a bowl, and the floor. Also have been trying...

Shaking and weird noises

I just got a girl chinchilla a few days ago. I settled her in and got her a big cage the day after. She was kinda shy so I thought I would get her a treat. I asked google for what I could give her and I saw Romain lettuce. But without doing all the research I gave about a one inch long leaf of it. Since then she’s been sleeping more than usual. She stops randomly anywhere in her cage and sits for a few minutes and stretches. And it seems when ever she gets the chance she rubs her face and...

Boarding Issues

So the vet I was originally going to use for boarding my chins cancelled due to the Coronavirus. I then asked the person I'm renting an apartment from (house is getting renovated so I have to move somewhere for 2 weeks) if I could bring the chins. She said yes, which is great, but then I realized that I'm not sure what the temp or humidity is in her apartment. I'll ask, but what do I do if it's too warm, too humid, or both? I doubt she'd appreciate a dehumidifier running almost all day if...

Bonding

Hey guys I know I have gotten some advice on bonding recently. I know that they will require their own cages for the time being. I was curious if it’s best to used my ferret nation double and just block them off to singles or if it would be best to put them in cages away from each other where they can see each other?

An Update!

As some of you may have seen, my chin Buttons had a planned surgery on Monday. Somethings changed, and it was moved to Tuesday. However, today I got amazing news. Somehow Buttons' abscess is gone. The Bumblefoot healed by itself. The vet hasn't seen anything like it before, so we're both shocked. No surgery was needed! The vet didn't make me pay anything too, which was great. I gave him a dust bath while I cushioned the cage (vet said to still do it until 3 weeks for a follow up appointment)...

Complications

My chin was supposed to go in for surgery this morning, but something came up so he's staying overnight and the surgery will be done tomorrow. I have a couple concerns with this.

1. How will his brother feel once he finally comes home? I don't want their bond to be broken because he was at the vet for so long. Any advice for introducing them?

2. I already gave the vet hay, food, and they have water, but that's it. Should I give them some wood chews for him, or will he be okay until...

At a loss with sick chin

Posted this a while back:

Since then he continued having ups and downs, but was I thought improving. He ate a little more solid food, his favourite things, chewed up an apple twig, then, that same week, suddenly stopped eating. Back and forth to exotic vets and:

Tooth trim

Hey everyone! Hopefully I’m in the correct section. I need some advice on my chinchilla and her teeth. I have a 6 year old chinchilla who was recently (Jan 24) taken to the vet to have her teeth checked. She had stopped eating hay and started throwing her pellets out of her bowl which is very unusual for her. The vet was able to get her in for teeth trimming that same day, and she got her molars trimmed down. We came home and everything has been fine. Now, almost 8 weeks later, she has...

Fell in QC Chin Mansion

Hi all - I may be paranoid but I'm hoping to get some advice.

I was slowly unlatching the top door of my chinchilla mansion & my chin jumped on the lava ledge connected to the door. She must have snuck up there without me realizing as I was grabbing hay (I feel awful) she got startled as the door opened, jumped off and tried to catch her footing on the way down - from what I saw she jumped onto shelves (I have shelves in somewhat of a cyclone around the cage so she was never far from one)...

Hair matting

My chichilla is a rescue from an animal shelter. He is 4 to 5 years old and used to chew his fur quite a bit until I changed his diet from a harvest blend type food, to mainly Mazuri pellets and timothy hay. However, it now seems that he's developed several hair mats on his right haunch. He hates to be picked up and vibrates in fear when held. He will let me scratch all around his head, ears and chest, and down the middle of his back. I am wondering how I will be able to remove these mats...

Looking For Words Of Comfort

My beloved chin Buttons is undergoing surgery this upcoming Monday to remove a small abscess on his foot. Knowing how fragile chinchillas are, and after seeing so many stories of surgeries gone wrong, chins not waking up from anesthesia, etc. I'm nervous. The vet that will be doing the surgery is a retired registered breeder and has done surgery on multiple chins before, so that helps my nerves a little. If anyone could reply with assurance, comfort, positive affirmations, or anything...

tape was stuck, now removed using oil - did i do the wrong thing??

somehow during free roam in a chinproofed area (clearly I did a bad job and am rechecking everything three more times) my girl somehow got a piece of tape stuck to her. i used the smallest amount of olive oil i could get away with to take the tape off her. She's not "tamed" yet so it was extremely stressful for her and I haven't been able to wipe off any of the excess oil. The tape is removed now and i don't think it was ever on her skin, just her fur. do you think it will be ok that she...

Toys

Currently trying to set up an out of the cage time little are for my chin. Any recommendations on toys or things to put there? When I search chin toys it’s kinda the same old same old ones that the pets stores sell. Any your chins love or out of the box ideas to give him a good time and to explore???

Respiratory

I was talking with someone about candles, air fresheners, plug ins, perfumes, the powder your put down on your carpet and vacuum up to get rid of pet offers ect. Are these dangerous to use in a house you own a chin? Has anyone heard of this? Can these products cause respiratory illnesses for our little furry guys??

Chinchilla Games!

Are there any games your chinchilla likes to play with you?

Mr. B and I recently discovered a new "game" he likes to play! When it's playtime, there's a pumpkin in the corner of the space we play in (it's from halloween.. never been carved! Still hasn't rotted yet!). He'll jump up on top of the pumpkin and sit there facing me. That means I can scoop him up with both hands and he'll stay put in them! Normally he HATES being picked up so I thought it was pretty weird that he'd tolerate...

Cloudy Urine

A while ago I had posted about Mr. B's urine leaving a white chalky residue (and it turns out that was not abnormal), but just today when we were playing he pee'd and I noticed it looked yellowish and cloudy.. which I heard can be problematic! The urine didn't smell bad and he hasn't been having trouble peeing, so I don't think it's a UTI. Its hard for me to tell how often his urine is cloudy since it just sinks into his bedding in his cage.

A Purple Dilemma

While applying some Blu Kote to my chin's foot, he started violently kicking and got it all over my hands. Which is fine, but he also got a few splotches on his fur. Which means he is now a chin with purple markings. I tried drying it off with a paper towel as much as I could. Will he be okay with some Blu Kote patches on his fur? How do I clean it off?

How Do I Give A Dust Bath To A Chin That Has Bumblefoot?

My chin has minor bumblefoot, and he hasn't had a dust bath in over a week. I know I shouldn't give him a full dust bath, but at the same time he'd never let me just pat dust onto him. I feel like if I hold him I'd just get my skin oils all over him from him squirming. I tried asking the vet, but she's currently out of office. Advice?

Treats

As I’ve talked about many times I have been reaching out to a rescue for another chinchilla. She asked many questions about Sheldon’s diet and it seems him and taco eat the same things aside from treats.
The rescue has asked me not to feed taco any of the treats that Sheldon eats. I am worried about this because sheldon loves them and am not sure if they are actually good or okay for him to eat all thought all labeled for chinchillas or small animals.

2 Males need a home in Georgia

Through a series of very unfortunate and sad events I have 2 male chinchillas that need to be rehomed. I have been put into a position where I can no longer care for them.

I'm located in north Georgia and would really like to try to find someone local - either a rescue or a person who would like to bring these 2 sweet boys into their family. Is This Bumblefoot?

My chin that doesn't have surgery coming up for bumblefoot bled from one of his heels onto a ledge 3 days ago. The vet said before this happened that he just had some normal calluses, and he didn't seem to have any abscess either when I checked him out in the past. Only some widening of the heels from bad past ownership. He's never on wire flooring either. He's walking and eating fine. This is the wound now. Is this bumblefoot or did he just scratch his heel? Sick chin still losing weight

I have another thread in Emergencies (not so much of an emergency now we've been through the vet) about my chinchilla with a probable UTI and bloat. She's on Baytril, Reglan and a probiotic. The problem (in addition) is she's lost a lot of weight. She's never been a big chin but she's dropped all the way down to 454. We're feeding 10 ml of CC 3 x every day and I do see her grazing a little bit on her pellets and hay.

I emailed Fuzzies Kingdom about 4 days ago but never heard anything back...

3 New Kits - 1 Loosing weight

Hi there - I’m really hoping someone on this forum can help answer some questions regarding weight concerns for one of our new kits.

Toy Amount

I recently bought a bundle of toys I'll be giving to my chin post-foot surgery for more enrichment (he'll have no wheel, playtime, and no ledges at all) and a distraction from his sutures. The bundle has 20 vine balls, 15 poplar slices, and two 14-inch garlands. He'll also have access to two lava ledges, broken up pumice stones, and his daily stick. Will that be enough, or should I get more? I'm not sure how long his recovery will take, but hopefully not long since it's just removing a small...

So I’ve been actively looking for a buddy for my 2 year old chin. Someone has reached out to me who has been fostering a chin for 2 years. The chin is named taco and is 7 years old. Is this considered an adult or senior??

My biggest worry is to finally get them bonded and taco to pass away way before sheldon and break heart.

I’m also worried that because the chin is older that they won’t bond. Do you think that is a good chance??

I just adopted a pair of 5 year-old girls who were rescued from an abusive home. One weighs 480g and the other 800g. This is their weight after they were rehabilitated by a foster carer who apparently did wonders for them. So I have 2 main question:
1. what is the best way to help a chinchilla gain some weight?
2. how do i give the fattening food to only one of them?

One side question:
It's possible the heavier one had to eat all the food in the abusive situation and that's how this...

Dust Baths With Bumblefoot

My chin has minor bumblefoot, so can he take dust baths? The last time he took a dust bath (few days after he first bled from the abscess) there was a quite small amount of blood afterwards, so that's holding me back from giving him a dust bath even though he doesn't have cracked feet.

Padding

A fleece pad/blanket with two layers of Poly-Fil quilt batting inside (chins can't get to it, it's not a pillowcase style. Just a squishy pad covering the metal cage floor since one of them is getting foot surgery soon) is currently being sewn as we speak. However, is it safe to wash in the washing machine? I use a very gentle detergent and setting when washing fleece, and I air dry. If it is washable, do I do it twice a week as I usually do with liners or more often?

How can I get my chinchilla more comfortable?

I have had a chinchilla for about a little over a year now. His name is sheldon and is a male I got him when he was about 3-6 months old. He has no problem coming up to me letting me pet his head and face when he is in his cage.

However, when he comes out and I let him do his thing he doesn’t like to be picked up or have his body pet. I always leave his cage open when I let him out so he can feel free to go back when he wants. It seems when I try to pick him up or pet his body he bolts for...

Should I Be Concerned?

Well, I already am concerned, but should I be even more concerned with this? Last night I noticed that there were a few half-eaten food pellets next to my chins' two food bowls. This normally never happens. There were also a few crumbs in the bowl, which isn't too unusual so that didn't worry me too much. Other than that they ate all of their food. My first thought went right to teeth issues, so I immediately gave them both sticks. They chewed on them happily, no change in chewing patterns...

We have 2 chins, 1 is about 13 and the other 10 or so. We came home from holiday last night to discover a huge lump on the 10 year olds front leg. Took him to the vet and she said it's a tumour she can remove for 750 CAD. Any thoughts on whether we should do this... Cushion

One of my boys has been diagnosed with minor bumblefoot, and the abscess needs to be removed surgically. To ensure a smooth recovery, most if not all surfaces need to be covered so he has constant softness. However, only one layer of anti-pill fleece is not enough. Does anyone have any recommendations for extra layers of squishy/softness inside the fleece? The vet recommended Sherpa and to sew it so the chins can't get to it. I also recently purchased a sewing machine.

My chins are getting boarded at a trusted boarding-vet facility, I already checked it out and stuff. They will be staying there for two weeks, but I have some concerns, mainly about cleanliness.

1. I'll be bringing their old cage, but their old cage has plastic. When we went to check on her outside her cage, she let us touch her briefly. Then it sounded like she jumped again and now she is barking very angrily and is spraying urine. She won’t let us even come near her cage. She won’t take treats and is hiding again now in her house.
Not sure if she hurt herself and doesn’t want us...
