Polyp in mouth

One of my Arlington TX chins has a polyp on the roof of his mouth.
Have had him to two different exotic vets and they have no idea what/why he has it.
Last visit he said at some point it would grow to large and he would not survive.
Has anyone else ever seen this?
Tonight he is making noise when he breathes. Sounds wet like congestion.
Two vets don't know so thought I would ask the experts.:help:

Cage bottom questions - please help!

Hello!
I have recently adopted 2 chinchilla brothers. The cage I bought was supposed to be safe for chinchillas, but upon doing research I've found that the bottom is not entirely great for them so I'm looking into ways to improve it.

The cage has a wire bottom that is 1/2 inch apart in one direction, but larger gaps in the other direction (probably more appropriate for birds?). As seen here:

http://ift.tt/2byb3QP

I'm thinking about placing a tile in between the two houses on the bottom level where I see them constantly land during their frolicking around. But wanted to make sure -- are porcelain tiles safe for chinchillas (as this is what I have on hand)? This would just be an interim step until we have the supplies to refit the wire mesh bottom with 1/4 inch x 1/4 inch mesh.

Just want to keep the little guys safe! Thanks!!

Yellow fur under chin ): Please help!

Hi there

My chinchilla, Chester, has has dried but wet-looking yellow fur under his mouth and above his belly. He's had this for about 3-4 days. I had him on medications recently from the vet for his bottom teeth growing in a little fast. He's never had any issues like this in the four years I've had him, and I got him as a baby.

I've tried dry paper towels, and unscented baby wipes to no avail, and they aren't touching it in the least. My very recommended warm water, and possibly some very light brushing, but I'm scared because I wouldn't know how to dry him.

Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advanced!

Crusty eyes

Hello everyone, I found this group in hopes to get some advice. I work at a pet store (a good one, I wouldn't work here otherwise) and we got a chin from a breeder I think in NY. Anyways, he's been fine for the last couple of weeks he's been with us but starting a couple days ago, he has goopy eyes and one is crusted shut. He goes to the vet tomorrow, but I want to try and make him a little more comfortable until then. What do you suggest and what could it be from? He was on wood Pellets, now on paper bedding. He gets a dust bath every day during out of cage time.

Any advice? Would a warm compress help? Terramycin?

Thanks in advanced

Rabbit moving in..potential health concerns?

Hi,

My new tenant has a rabbit who is moving into the house. I know there's a potential risk of chinchillas getting diseases from rabbits, but how big is that risk? I'll never allow them to interact, but how far away must they be kept from each other? Can they be kept in the same room?

Bass Equipment Pans for FN?

I recently purchased some Bass Equipment pans for my new FN. Pans haven't arrived yet and I'm wondering if they rest on top of the FN metal grates or take the place of the grates? Thanks.

Molar Spurs (Novel Length fyi)

So about 9 months ago my chin, Chloe, had an upper respiratory infection, possible tooth root abscess and GI stasis. She recovered from that but now I think she has an abscess from a molar spur.
Last night I noticed the classic drool neck, odor and pawing at mouth. I noticed she'd been eating less hay the past 5-7 days and maybe pawing at her mouth. I started her on baytril, metoclopramide and probiotics last night that I have at home (I work in an animal hospital I don't suggest everyone treat their own animals or go out and buy a small veterinary pharmacy for yourself).
Today I took some rads, sedated exam. I found no abscess and roots look ok but she definitely has maloclussion. Her rads from 9 months ago are very different looking (just the crowns of her teeth, roots are the exact same). She has spurs that I suspect caused an infection and I just couldn't see the laceration on her cheek. I may have seen a abscess/wound in the way back of her mouth but I couldn't manipulate the light enough to get a good look.
There is a vet at my hospital that sees exotics though she does not see them exclusively and is not considered a specialist. I'm sure she's done spur filing before so I'd rather be the surgery tech for a routine-ish procedure than have it done elsewhere.
The vet does not feel they are bad enough to file. I disagree and want to go ahead with the surgery. I don't see how they would get better on their own.
I was just wondering what people's experience with removing spurs were? I will try to get her infection under control before the surgery, though the spurs are just going to keep cutting her cheek/gums so I'm wondering if I should just do the surgery asap. I think it would be pretty quick if we were smart about it. She would probably be sedated for as long as she was today anyways!
Just wanted to know some opinions about surgery while being ill and recovery process etc.
Thank you very much.

Emergency!!! Chinchilla pulling something out of genitals

Hello everyone. Our chinchilla is about one year old. Today, she started to pull something out of her genitals and eating it. We tried to stop her but she kept on continuing and we are very worried about it because we have no idea what is it. Does anybody know what it could be? She removed about 4 of those (see attached pictures). At first, she seemed to be in pain but 30 minutes later, she was running fine.

Looking for Male Chinchilla

Hello!

Looking for a male chinchilla... preferably Violet HOWEVER not picky. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada! Please respond if you have one available OR if you knowif a breeder in Alberta as I have not been able to find one.

Britt :)

Chinchilla cage questions

Hello, I have a standard gray chinchilla named Gandalf who I've had since birth and is now 3 years old. I currently have a double level ferret nation style cage (off brand from Amazon) the grated floors are covered with cardboard with fleece attached to cover that, I like that better than when I had the bottom floor completely covered in bedding but it still is tedious to remove and clean. I would rather have some sort of permanent floor system preferably a steel material of some sort that way I can just shop vac and wipe the floors. She is potty trained to pee in a glass baking pan with bedding so that won't be a problem. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as how to go about this or any other alternatives that worked for them?

DIY Cage

I plan on building a cage for my new male Chins (Maybe adding a divider and adding my female as well) I have an old tall cabinet. But I'm not sure what to buy and what kind of layout to have! Please share your custom cages and a list of materials! (Including shelving, toys, everything!

I'm not sure what's going on?

Let me start by saying I use this site simply to educate myself on my chinchilla. I just got him a month ago and he is a year old. I adopted him from my brother who couldn't give him the attention he needed and the chinchilla and I bonded almost instantly, so he gave him to me.

Since I've had him everything has been fine. I've been taking slow steps into gaining his trust and he is pretty comfortable around me, and allows me to pet him, give him treats, and climb on my shoulder. I'm only posting this because I can't find anything that matches exactly what is happening right now.

I spent all day with Mousse (the chinchilla) and let him play like normal, changed his water, refilled his food, gave him a dust bath, etc. Tonight however I heard him start to bark in his cage. I know this is a sign of fear usually in them so I approached to see what the matter was. He instantly backed into a corner and barked louder looking directly at me. I didn't know what to do, I didn't want to stress him out so I moved away from the cage and checked the site.

People were saying it can also be a sign of being lonely so I thought maybe he wanted petting. When I reproached Mousse (who has been barking this whole time) he goes back to shoving himself in a corner and when i reached out my hand slowly he flipped out and ran from me. He is currently hiding in his little house. :(

I don't know what happened to trigger this sudden fear of me. He and I have never had an issue with each other and he is usually a pretty tough little guy. Could something else be wrong? What should I do?

One of my chins died..

And its my fault. My two chins, Eko and Tuco have to be seperated because they sometimes don't get along. They get along during playtime when I'm watching them but Tuco sometimes chases Eko around and a little fur slip occurs. The other day I had them loose in my room and they seemed to be getting along well. I went to the bathroom and when I came back there was a bunch of fur on the floor. I separated them and Eko just sat in the same spot and wouldn't move. You know somethings wrong when you can pat your chin and they don't try to run away from you and just sit there. I brought Eko to emergency vet (it was about 10pm) and they didn't deal with exotics. They did however give him some pain killer and antibiotics. I brought him home and put him in his cage and he didn't move all night. The next morning I had an appointment at a vet that deals with exotics. They vet said he was going to do an x-ray of him to make sure there were no broken bones. When he came back he said he's never had a chin lay on his back and just stay like that while taking the x-rays, they didn't need to hold him. The vet said no broken bones, but he thinks he's depressed and his core temperature was low because he hasn't been moving around much. He wanted to keep him for a few hours so they put him in an incubator and monitor him and give him some food and water because I don't think he ate or drank anything since his incident with Tuco. I got a phone call from the vet and he said Eko passed away, and he's not sure what happened for him to die so suddenly.

I know I shouldn't have a favorite chin but Eko was mine. My chins are given plenty of play time so I don't think that is what caused his depression. I live in a basement and have a hole in the wall of my room that leads to another large wooden cage and a tunnel from that goes up to ceiling then straight for about 10 feet, then to a y intersection to two more small wood cages mounted from the ceiling. Eko would always greet me in the morning and follow me by going through the tunnels if I had let him out of his cage. Of course me giving him a treat helped him to do that as well. I'm going to miss seeing him waiting there for me every morning and following me around.

Tuco was more of an alpha and I felt like Eko knew I was his protector, because he would run behind me during playtime if Tuco started chasing him. I wasn't there for him this time.

Someone told me I should try to form a closer bond with Tuco, since now I'm essentially his other chin buddy. But I can't shake this feeling of being mad and feeling resentment at him for what he did to Eko, even though I know its his animal nature to do what he did. Its like I want to change his name and forget there ever was an Eko and Tuco, like pretend he is a totally different chin all together.

I'm wrote this because it feels good to just let out how I'm feeling. Thanks for reading and
R.I.P. Eko

"Shared" level of FN an option?

I just brought one of my bonded pairs to college and am enjoying having them so I'm thinking of bringing my other two girls as well. They are all used to double FNs but there is not room for two in my apartment so what I'm wondering is if it would work to get a three level FN and have the middle section be a "public" space of sorts, where I have it open for one set every few days and let them alternate so they're not in the same space together but could take advantage of the space. They have been situation in cages next to each other for a little over three years at this point, so nobody's smell is new.

Chins staying on bottom of cage?

One of my chins has been losing wait and powdering her food. A visit to the vet led to xrays and what looked like the very beginning of a blockage, she was still digesting and passing food so they put her on antibiotics and gave her fluids and that seems to have resolved. My parents normally care for them while I'm at college but because of the health scare, I brought this bonded pair with me to take to the exotic vet at the vet school here (very well respected institution), as I want to be sure she is fine. As this is only temperary and I have vet bills about to hit, I wasn't up for spending a bunch on a second cage. At home, they have a double level Ferret Nation that wouldn't fit in my car with everything else even if I could get it back together when we got to school. I ended up finding one of the Super Pet my first home cages on craigslist for cheap and getting some new shelves, etc so that I don't have to lug things back and forth for them. I took our the plastic shelves that came with the cage and got it all decked out. They have plenty of places to go plus their favorite wall hut, tube, lounger and hammock are up top. They'll need more play time outside because the cage is smaller but I feel like they have plenty of room and things to do in there. The problem is that neither of them seem to want to leave the bottom of the cage. They have been taking turns on the wheel and the poo reveals that they went one shelf up for hay but it doesn't look like they are exploring upwards. I expected this from Lilly. She gets nervous climbing at times, I had to keep the ramp in their FN because she wouldn't change levels otherwise. But Cindy is my tree climber and even when she wasn't feeling well, she would head up and sleep in her tube. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to help them take advantage of the full space!

Need someone to make a wood or metal flooring for cage

Hi, I adopted a chinchilla that came with a cage and different things. The cage is a Prevue Hendryx 485 Feisty Ferret. I was wondering if someone could make a wood platform using wood safe for chinchillas. I need it for the second floor (the one with the square cutout) I am thinking of taking the roof of the cage (which has the cutout more toward the side rather than the middle) and switching it with the second level (they look like that can be swapped)

So long story short I was hoping someone could make me a metal or wood floor for me. We can discuss pricing and detals. Email me at Cjfarrow@yahoo.com or reply on here. Thanks!

Drinking Water

Aloha,

Ok, so I know I don't want to use just tap water to fill their water bottle. This is what I usually drink, would it work?

http://ift.tt/2bkJic1

Or maybe distilling it myself?

http://ift.tt/2bkKxIg

Or, would getting it out of my refrigerator that filters the water be sufficient? I change the filter regularly. I want to do what's best for them, but after a new Critter Nation and everything to accessorize it, funds are a little tight!

Mahalo in advance for sharing your knowledge!

Breeding

I am a first time breeder. I have had my Theodore for some time now. He is a bit older, 3 years, and I know it's not ideal but I read that it could happen. I also just bought a female who is almost 5 months old and won't be put into breeding until at least 8 months. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips and must-do's about breeding and caring for the babies before I actually do it. I bought a large cage with 1/2 inch slots for the babies and mom when they are born. But other than that I am not prepared and need to know everything I need. Thank you in advance!

New chinchillas fur loss

Hi my daughter has recently got 3 new chinchillas mum and 2 daughters the age of them is unknown or there back ground. The lady she got her from has had them a year and that's about as much as we know, when they arrived they were in a very small cage and fed on tesco rabbit food no hay and there sand was more like play sand than chinchilla dust that we use. My concern is the mum is small compared to the two daughters she is missing half an ear and her fur has come out in big clumps. My daughter said when she went to collect them there was a cat climbing up there cage and they had loads of animals. They seem to be doing well we have bought them a large cage changed there food and got some chinchilla dust. They come to my daughter she can now pick them up and they run round her jumping about in a pen. But I was looking at mum today her fur is really bad not to skin but looks really patchy has anyone any ideas on what could be causing this or how to try and make her better 😢

Odd sleeping after playtime?

So I let my chinchillas out for playtime, and one of them always manages to get out of his play area, so i pick him up, tell him to stop, then put him back in the play area. immediately after he shoved his face in a corner, and went to sleep. He does this almost every time i scold him, or I put him back in his cage after playtime. Today, my other chinchilla did the same thing when I put her back in her cage, She's never done it before.
So do you think they're ill, sleepy, or just being brats?

Names

Yesterday, I went out a bought two 5(ish) month old brother and sister. Their previous owner did not name them so now I've been observing them for a day and still can't decide on anything! Help

Burnt Toast

I have one chinchilla, Theodore, in a cage by himself for a few weeks. Yesterday, I bought a brother and sister and put each in their own cage. They came from another household and I have noticed that their poop was soft, short and round. I read that burnt toast can help. However, they didn't eat it from my hand so I crumbled it in with their food and hay hoping maybe they would get a little bit. I am not sure what the other family fed them so they are eating Carefresh Complete, Sunburst Gourmet Blend, Timothy Hay, and Timothy Hay bites broken up in their food dish. They have been getting fresh water. Is their anything else I can try if they do not get better in the next few days? They both seem fine. Running around and playing. They don't seem any more tired during the day than my Theodore.

Emergency Heat Plan Recommendation?

We have air conditioning but it's going to hit 100 for a couple days this week (this is the most stressful time of year for me!)

I have this down as an emergency plan if the power goes out:

- Take chins carriers with ice packs covered in fleece/marble/water and go to nearest vet in air conditioned car until they cool off.

If the air conditioning fails I have a backup standalone unit.

What are the finer points I should be aware of? We have a freezer full of cold things to put in with them.

What would you recommend?

I also have a list of pet friendly hotels with AC just in case. The vet is an interim plan.

Fur stuck to wiskers

Hi, I think my chinchilla accidentally rubbed his whiskers in some glue or some kind of adhesive somehow and now some of his fur is stuck to his whiskers. I've tried gently to remove it but it wont come out, should i just leave it, cut it off, or try to give it a bit of a harder tug? I don't know if his whiskers serve certain function that he now can't do, so I'm not really sure what to do.

Thanks

Willow

My gorgeous 15 year-old girl, Willow, left us on Friday after what we all, including the vet, assumed to be a minor routine illness. While she undoubtedly lived a long happy healthy life, I never expected to lose her right now. Two years ago, she narrowly cheated death, and since then she has almost seemed invincible. It was almost like she found a fountain of youth somewhere under the couch! I really thought I might eventually have the world's oldest chinchilla.

Willow was my third chinchilla, one of my original three of girls. I saw her picture on the previous version of this forum in January 2005, and knew immediately that we needed each other. A bit of research told me she was born on a large ranch, purchased by a hobby breeder, and then sold to a pet home where she wasn't getting the care and attention she needed. Thank goodness that owner had enough sense to rehome her, even though she didn't even tell me her name! Having been bounced around so much in the first few years of her life, this gorgeous girl was understandably terrified and cried her entire first night with me (I cried too). For whatever reason, I had a list of trees on my desk that night, and when I saw "black willow" and "weeping willow", it became clear that I would call her Willow.

She eventually bonded beautifully with my other two girls, and took on the motherly role in their little family. While patient and tolerant with the other chins, she refused to take any @#$% from humans. She was full of black velvet attitude, and made more noise than all of my other chins combined. Sometimes she yelled her opinions from across the room, sometimes she threw things, and if particularly upset, she wouldn't hesitate to spray someone in the face. While she usually hated to be picked up, she was a dream to hold - big, silky soft, and super calm.

Willow was with me my entire adult life. She stuck by my side through three graduate programs, three homes, two states, four jobs, and two serious relationships (she told me how she felt about the first guy in no uncertain terms, and I should have listened to her sooner). Her original "sisters" eventually left her, and new chins came into and left our lives. She was my constant and handled each transition with such grace.

Throughout the years, she became quite possibly the best-behaved chinchilla ever. She was so trustworthy that it got to the point where I could leave her out almost constantly in a my chin-proofed living room. She liked to watch television from the hammock in her cage, but her favorite spot was under the couch. She would spend hours hidden there, awake, listening, and waiting for me to leave the house. She preferred to come out when no one was home; I'd usually only catch her out in the middle of the floor if I had to come back inside for something I had forgotten. The rest of the time she preferred to move about silently in the shadows. On Friday, I watched her crawl under the couch for the very last time. For years, I've known that she'd want to go there whenever her time came.

Words can't describe how much I miss her. My schedule was built around hers. My house was arranged around her needs and desires. Everything reminds me of her. Despite how much I'm hurting right now, I am so incredibly lucky to have had her in my life for the past 11.5 years.

Love you forever, Willow!

2. I have the upper unit of a critter nation for sale for $135. It includes a metal pan and the shelf.

3. I have this cage for sale (http://ift.tt/2aWHWCC) does not have the shelves/ slides/ ramps, however. Will sell for $50.

Please let me know if you would like any further pictures or details, I also may be willing to negotiate some prices. I am in Northern NJ.

Bonding father and son

I've reached the time to start weaning my kits. They ate 8 weeks old and with 216g and 230g.

having spent a couple of weeks reintroducing dad to sob i thought it would work putting them together. It doesn't appear to be the case. After 6 hours of calm alk Hwk broke loose. Dad wouldn't stop chasing son who hid and then dad just blocked him every time he tried to come out. I separated them overnight.

Does this mean they haven't bonded and that dad won't accept him?

If anyone's had any thoughts/advice id be grateful!
TIA

Painting wooden accessories safely??

Aloha kakahiaka!

So I've been busy reading posts on here, garnering and filing away any useful information I might need in the future. Back in January, someone posted this picture of a "hut" that's been painted and a discussion followed about safe ways for coloring handmade stuff for chins. Neither of the 2 options I've been planning to use were mentioned so I wanted to open this discussion again. First, the hut, currently sold through PetSmart's website... Safety is questionable:

During my research, I've run across several posts about using food color (either in water or in a non-toxic glue like Elmer's basic white school glue). So my first attempt (on my schedule for this weekend) is to test out regular food colorings - you know, the red, blue, yellow, green ones that we've used since childhood (in the US anyway). But then my little brain remembered that I have a more varied set of cake frosting dyes. If you guys agree these are safe ways of coloring wood, I'll play around this weekend and see how they turn out. The frosting colors are designed to color WHITE frosting, so I'm not sure how well they'd work mixed with water. I'm sure they'd look beautiful mixed in white glue, but while non-toxic (most kids have eaten some at some point even; I think I did nearly daily in Kindergarten, heh), would it be safe to "paint" the wood with the glue mixture??

Then I found an artist in Canada who does cage signs, as well as, many gorgeous designs for cage accessories. BEAUTIFUL colors. Here are my cage signs as an example:

And to give you an idea of her work (I.e., as in how colorful they are). She lists this set specifically as "chin-safe":

Gorgeous, isn't it? I asked if she would please share what she paints with. I'm not the artist she is, but I wanted just some basic color. She said that she uses soy paint. What in the heck is that?? It's a plant based paint, completely non-toxic from everything I have found about it. So I jumped to my handy Amazon and were able to find 10 or so colors of soy paint and ordered them. These are the ones I'm really interested in using as they are so bright and cheerful. Course, if they aren't safe for my Chinnie's to chew on them, doesn't matter how bright they are. Any ideas on using soy paint guys??

I have a message in to my cousin who is a Veternarian in Phoenix - she's had chins before and she helped her mom with bird rescue for years growing up. I figure all that PLUS the 8 years in school and the Dr before and DVM after, she should give good advice. So I've asked her and am eagerly awaiting her reply...

In the meantime, I wanted to get your feedback about the 2 directions I'm currently heading. I'm looking for something I can color wood with, something bright but chin/chew-safe at the same time.

Mahalo everyone, you are AWESOME!

~ Tina

2 year old female hedgehog NH

Hi,
Unfortunately, I'm going to school this fall and won't have the time for my hedgehog anymore.
She will be 2 in September. I spent a lot on her and all the things she's accumulated so I'm hoping to get $100 for her, her wheel, various hides, fleece, food, heat lamps, nail clippers, and heating pads. She came from an excellent breeder who has bred WHS out of her hedgies, so she'll most likely stay healthy.
She is not particularly friendly but loves exploring and running on her wheel. She also loves bath time (:
I just want her to go to a home where she'll get more loving attention. Let me know if you are interested in buying her or know someone who's looking for a hedgehog! Thanks!

Hello

Hi everyone

I am Alan from the UK, im 33

I am the proud owner of Bunty, who is 22 years old

She is my world

I look forward to interacting with you all and sharing stories and pictures

New but experienced owner in need of help

Hello Everyone

I am Alan, I am 33 years old, I live in Essex in the UK

I am the proud owner of Bunty the chinchilla, she is 22 and I have had her from when she was a baby.

This is a bit of a story so apologies its long, all I ask is kindness and helpful advice.

Last Wednesday, I let Bunty out in my room as I have done all my life for play time, she usually runs out her bed and jumps on my lap. This time she came out slowly and sat by her box. I approached her, and noticed an awful smell instantly. She was caked in diarrhoea. I have an excellent exotic vet, who i contacted instantly and he saw me as an emergency the next day. I cleaned her and stayed up all night checking on her.

At the vets he gave me sulfatrim (apologies spelling) performed a minor dental and excellent examination. He has seen Bunty since the age of 18, she has regular dental check ups

Although greatly improved her stool is very loose, and she is off her dinner tray. With the help of my mother we have been administering critical care. To look at you wouldn't know anything was wrong, no sign of stress, very playful again, just off her food and soft poo.

Yesterday I took Bunty back to her vets for the follow up, he witnessed first hand the soft stool, and said there are 3 next steps, two were implemented immediately

1) She was given baytril, I have administered this 3 times now. She has a tiny bit of loose stool this morning but she has hardly poo'd at all.
2) He took samples of the loose stool and sent this away to specialists for analysis (he often works at a high profile zoo and assures me the analysts are the best in the UK)

3) depending on the results of the above he may wish to take a blood sample

Guys this is my baby, I got her when I was 11 shes now 22 and I am 33, has anyone experienced this before, my fear is reading the internet we are getting on in terms of number of days. She remains off her food, and stools whilst improved are not right.

My email is a.acflower@btinternet.com if you prefer not to post here.

Any advice, or even sharing your experiences would help.

Two things to add, her vet is world class, his knowledge is second to none and he takes great pride in his care, he also weighed her, she hasn't lost any weight

I will share pictures of her and actively contribute to this group, a long term fan, first time poster

I look forward to your kind words

New: Sorry first post is here

How long is an open bag of Oxbow food good for?

I have 3 chins and we feed them Oxbow.. usually just buy a few bags of the 5lb at a time (All my local petsmart has) but the prices just went up and it'd be much cheaper to buy the 25lb bag off Amazon.

My only concern is once it's opened how long until it goes bad? I'm guessing it would take them about 3-4+ months to eat it all.

Female Chinchilla Wanted in NH

Hi~
Unfortunately, I just had the sad and hard situation of having to put one of my two chinchillas down (she had malocclusion).
Now my remaining chinchilla is alone, and I think she's a little lonely. She doesn't love being pet or held (she will tolerate both) so I think she needs a fellow chinchilla to play and cuddle with. There's no rush, but if I can find a chinchilla in need of a home around me I definitely want to help.
Her name is Aurora and she's 2 1/2. She's a little bratty so an easy-going chinchilla would be best. I do have 2 cages in case they end up not getting along.
Thanks!

2 questions

How many chins can I put in a width 20" x 31" x 33" Height? I cat upload pic.

How do I catch my chin without her running away or getting scared?

Traveling with chin?

I'm going to be going up to college again in the end of August (I leave the 20th) and this will be the first time i'm going up since I got Eli. My school is an 8-9hr drive from my house. Originally I was going to fly up with him and keep him in a cat carrier but according to JetBlue they only allow cats and small dogs to fly (which is weird because so many people have cat allergies, who has a chin allergy?) anyway, if I were to put him in a carrier (most likely a cat carrier) would he be okay for the 8 hours? He would have water of course and I'd stick some of his hay in there too

Not eating and bloody poop

My chinchilla Dexter is about 3 and two days ago I noticed he wasn't eating very much hay and then last night he started having diarrhea. I took his pellets last night to try to get him to eat the hay and it seems he ate about half of what he normally does overnight but his poops appear to have blood in them this morning. I'm trying to get to a vet very soon but has anyone ever had an experience like this?

Me and My Chinnies, Joey and Kira

Aloha!

Guess I'll introduce myself before I start asking questions. My name is Tina and I'm about to get my first 2 chinchillas. I live on the Big Island of Hawai'i. My chins are coming from a breeder in Honolulu. I've wanted chinchillas for several years now. I've been voraciously reading everything I could find online about chinchillas and I've watched a gazillion YouTube videos over the last 14 months. I consider myself a fairly crafty person and am planning on making quite a bit of my own wood and fleece items. I grew up on a farm, raised livestock, and was a 4-h member. I have raised and shown English bulldogs and toy poodles.

Let me introduce my chins... Joey was born 5/13/16. She is pedigreed and is considered a Standard Sc 50% RPAc. She's a gorgeous little girl with a wonderful disposition. If I lived on the mainland, I would be showing her. These pictures were taken at 5 weeks old.

Her cage buddy will be Kira. She too is pedigreed and she is a dark Ebony. As with Joey, I'd be showing her if I could. Everything points to her being as wonderful as Joey, but that could change as Kira was born 7/25/16 and is only 2 weeks old. This photo were taken that first day.

My girls will be coming home mid-September when the weather has cooled off and Kira has been weaned. My 1-story critter nation arrived yesterday and my 2 add-ons should be here next week. So that means I'll have a 3-story to play with. Until they each weigh about 300 grams, they will only have 1-story to explore, expanding to 3-story when they get a bit bigger. I'm planning to set it up so no one can fall more than about 6". I have pine shelves, ledges and a hidey hut. In fleece, I have hammocks, a cube, some tunnels and my cage liners (I think I probably went a little overboard here, heh). I have a 16-inch super quiet, solid metal wheel, but it won't be offered until they gain some weight as well. Because I live on lava rocks, I thought I'd take advantage of that and am planning to custom make a rock "zone", something with tunnels and caves to explore. I'll scrub, boil and bake my rocks before putting them together with a non-toxic glue. I want to make sure they can't move the rocks and have an accident.

They'll be in my room as that's where I spend most of my time (I telecommute from home) and I have an air conditioner in here to keep it about 70-72°. I'm going to feed Oxbow (which is what they have been on since birth) with a second-cut Timothy hay and a few alfalfa cubes. Treats will be oatmeal, rose hips, goji berries, bite-size unfrosted shredded wheat and Cheerios (max of 1 "something" a day). I did get some raisins which I plan to cut into thirds and will only use them for training. When they are older and bigger, their play area will be my room. All my wires have been hidden (either run in the wall or moulding put up to cover them), and I've ordered a waterproof type blanket to throw on my bed while they are out. My bed sits on the floor so they won't be able to get under it.

And finally, I've added quite a bit of chin-only first aid items to my animal kit. I believe having everything I can think of that I might need to cover any incidents or ailments on hand before they are needed. I started my animal kit nearly 10 years ago for my dogs. As I get a new animal, I add whatever is specific to them. I've since added cat and chicken stuff... It's amazing how many things can be used cross-species. I mark expiration dates on everything and replace as needed to keep current. I have made sure my local vet has seen chinchillas before... Living isolated on an island doesn't give me many options but she seems to be knowledgeable about my dogs and cats so I think she'll be ok. I'm fairly competent taking care of most things at home and while she's not here, my cousin is an exotics vet in Arizona so she's available 24/7/365.

I'm a bit OCD (can you tell, heh) and am more than excited for my girls to be coming home next month!! Until then, I keep searching for sites I haven't read yet, re-watching videos, questioning and confirming everything I *think* is right! My hobby is photography so I expect I'll be sharing lots of images with those questions...So... That's me and my Chinnie girls. If anything I've written sounds off, please, please let me know!!

I'm really looking forward to meeting you all here. The forum seems to be fairly active. I've found a few other forums, but they seem to be mostly inactive with just 1 or 2 still reading and answering posts. Have met some nice people for sure, but living on an island, I'm really looking for a community - somewhere with other Chinnie-loving people!

Mahalo,
~ Tina

Cage and supplies for sale

Our chin died in an accident outside his cage and we are getting rid of it and all of our toys, supplies and treats. It has a wheel that I paid a good deal of money for. The cage is selling for $135 on Amazon, ours is five years old and needs a good power wash. Located in central jersey near New Brunswick. Selling for $50.

How hard should I scratch my chinchilla??

Hi everyone! I've got an 8month old chinchilla male named Bubba. I've had him since he was 2months old and he's an amazing pet. I was wondering if anyone could explain how hard to scratch underneath his chin or other areas of his body. I'm a 25 year old male and while I'm not huge and muscular I still stay away from doing this because I'm afraid I'll hurt my little guy. I always pet him and he seems to love it because he makes a bubbling sound when I do. Then he grooms my hand after I do it every time haha. Thanks for any advice!!

New Possible Owner

Hi! I've been thinking about getting 2 chinchillas for awhile now but have some concerns. One is the temperature problem. We do have air conditioning but I know my parents won't let us run it all summer long. So my only thought is the basement which is cool and has a dehumidifier but is an unfinished basement with only 1 window cement floors and rock walls (I live in an old farm house). I just want to make sure they would be comfortable down there and with not a lot of light would they mind that? If they would be okay down there in the summer that would be awesome but In the winter (here's my next question) I would want them in the spare bedroom next to mine so I'm closer to them. But would changing their location from summer to other months make them stressed out? They would still be in the same cage though. Any info would be awesome, thanks!
One more thing if anyone knows. I have an 8 year old Boston terrier who has never had another animal in her home would that make her stressed? I would keep them separate all times but don't want my dog uncomfortable in her own home.

Cardboard/Fleece cage liner

Hi, I am getting a chinchilla from a breeder next week and I have done hours and hours of research. The cage i got unfortunately has wire floors so I have been looking into covering them. I want to use fleece but I am afraid it wont absorb urine fully. Is it okay for be to use cardboard that is covered by fleece with metal clamps. This way the cardboard will absorb the pee, and I can throw it away every week or so and wash the fleece.

Any advice/suggestions I would appreciate.

Shedding

My 5 year old male chin, Chubbs, has been shedding more than usual lately. It is summer here, but it's consistently 69 F here in my house. Last night he was enjoying a pat, not at all distressed, and lost a fair chunk of fur. It didn't leave a bald spot so I feel it is more normal shedding than distress sloughing. I've read that brushing is bad and combing is not necessary and often very uncomfortable for the chin.

Is heavy shedding normal sometimes? Do you recommend combing or something else?

adopting a wounded rescued chinchilla

Hey guys! I am new here.
I’ve never had a chinchilla before but been wanting to get one. I was reading about them a lot and I looking for a place to buy a baby chin. But then I decided to check local SPCA (Las Vegas, Nevada). That’s where I found Brewster. When I saw him I felt so bad for him. So I am fostering him right now (I brought him home three days ago) but going to adopt him pretty soon.
I’ve been told Brewster is around one-year-old. 23 other chinchillas and he were recently rescued from a house where they were used for breeding. Brewster was in a cage with three other chins who beat him up. As a result, he has no tail, he has only 2 toes on his left foot and 3 toes on his right foot. He also has a huge wound on his head. His ears were beaten and have scabs now. You can see it on the attached pictures. Is he still in pain? I’ve read on this forum that chins can hide their pain easily. He eats well, drinks his water, pees and poops a lot too. He also sheds a lot. I’ve been brushing him but it doesn’t really help. Is it normal for chins to shed like crazy?
I’ve been taking him out of the cage for a play time every day. He was just hiding at first but on day 3 he started coming up to me to smell my hands, feet, etc. The thing is he does not jump. He just hops around my kitchen (that’s where he has his play time, it’s chin proved). He takes his dust bath and he seems to enjoy it. But I’ve never seen him jump. Well, I let him jump off of my hands once but I think it was awkward for him. I worry that it might be because he’s missing his tail and some toes on his feet. What do you guys think?
He doesn’t seem to be very scared of me. He comes over to smell my fingers when he’s in a cage but he runs away when I try to pick him up. I guess it’s normal plus it’s only his 4th day here. I feel bad for everything he had to go through so I am going to adopt him. Should I get a double unit or a single unit cage for him?
Sorry for the long message. Also excuse my grammar mistakes, English is my second language.
I am open to any advises you guys can give me. I’ll really appreciate it! All I just want is for Brewster to feel safe and loved.
Thank you for your time!

Where to get wood?

I would love to make new ledges for my three chins, but the only safe wood (kiln dried pine boards) that I can find are two inch thick (!!!) boards from Home Depot. I've used this for ledges, but I find them to be much too thick and heavy. I'm looking for something and inch or less, preferably. If there are any common places that provide these sizes, please answer below! Thanks!

Rescued Girl Has A Bunch of Issues ; Extremely Weak ; Please help me!

Some background information:

I'm a student, but I do small animal rescues as a 'hobby' and out of my passion and love for animals. I usually take in guinea pigs and chinchillas, as there isn't a shelter here that does that.

In my country, hedgehogs are illegal and should not be owned as a pet. However, 2 weeks ago, I received a call from a fellow rescuer who passed two girls to me, surrendered by an owner who 'did not find it interesting anymore and they were too prickly'.

Luckily, the pet supply shop owner I'm familiar with was willing to deliver all the items I needed within the day - cat food, water dishes and bottles, Critical Care and Carnivore Care, etc.

When I got them, they were in a really bad state, poop stains everywhere and one of them was extremely weak. While one was extremely grumpy (kept huffing, curling into a ball etc.), she's now tamer and though she curls when I touch her forehead, she's willing to let me hold and cuddle her. She seems to be quilling too, as she lost 3 quills within a few minutes, and I can see half-emerged quills growing on her back. The other was extremely calm and weak. She walked and ran a little around my room, and fell asleep on my palm in less than an hour. She had no problem with me handling her and even till now, she sleeps in my palm always. I do think her 'relaxed' behaviour is also due to her weakness, such that she doesn't have the energy to curl into a tight ball, but is able to curl nonetheless.

They're currently supposedly 2 months old, although one of them weighs 60g and the other 220g according to the vet. I'm aware that one of them is severely underweight.

I never had any prior experience of taking care of hedgehogs, and neither of us knew who could help with them. Many of the vets here only tend to dogs and cats, a handful who are able to care for rabbits and guinea pigs, and far lesser who are exotic-savvy. (We have chinchillas here.) I felt like I turned into a hedgehog care 'expert' overnight due to me staying up all night reading forums and possibly every single reputable hedgehog care site.

I would really appreciate and need everyone's help in guiding me more on how to care for this two lovely girls. Correct me if I'm wrong and please do advise products which I can get for them.

---

Housing: I've made a 2x2 C&C cage with 10" walls to house them. I used piggy bedspreads (fleece) as bedding for them before I realised they had mites. Worried that the mites might infest on the fleece, I moved both hedgehogs into a glass fish tank with wood pellets as bedding, to house them till they're free of mites.

Food: I followed the list of recommended food as much as I could, but brands like Blue Buffalo, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Natural Balance are all not sold here. I got Acana's Wild Prairie Cat, Solid Gold's Katz-N-Flocken, and Wellness' Trufood Indoor - Chicken, Chickpeas & Chicken Liver Recipe. The weaker one, Ponyo, is currently on Hill's Prescription Diet a/d™ Canine/Feline Critical Care. She is able to eat on her own and I feed her every 4 hours, through the night too. I let her eat till she shows disinterest, and depending on how much I've seen her eat, I'll syringe-feed another 1 or 2 mL. She refuses to eat anything else - dry cat food, Oxbow's Critical Care and Carnivore Care, even if it's mixed into the a/d canned food. She can't be on a/d forever due to the high protein and fats and I'm worried she won't eat anything! So far, despite the high protein and fats, she lost some weight. The other eats the dry cat food just fine and I think she's put on some weight since I got her...

Heating: I live in a tropical country and the temperature never drops below 26C/80F, and is usually 32C/90F. However, I do sleep with air-conditioner and it's usually adjusted to 25C/77F on high power. The past few weeks, I never dared to turn on the air-conditioner as I'm worried it might cause them to be unwell. I can't move them to another room either due to space restrictions. I've ordered a heatpad off Amazon (http://ift.tt/2aAf1Sk) in hopes that I don't have to suffer in the heat at night, while they won't have to suffer in the cold.

---

Now to the most important part, Ponyo's health issues! :(

When I got her, her skin seemed flaky and her right eye wouldn't open. She was sneezing and scratching, and it just rang so many alarm bells in my head.

The day after I got them, I was able to convince a vet to treat Ponyo. She said Ponyo had mites and possibly upper respiratory infection. Ponyo was given a dose of Revolution and the vet provided me a few cans of Hill's Prescription Diet a/d™ Canine/Feline Critical Care. I then made an appointment to review her in two weeks. (Check: The vet said a dose of Revolution (Puppy/Kitten) for Ponyo, who was 60g, was 0.006mL.)

In the next week, Ponyo a little more active and very much less scratching, but she is often asleep, even in the night. The other girl (which I haven't given a name to) was more active, ate really well, but was sleeping most of the time too. She would frequently knock down the water bottle holder, trying to escape the cage. I tried giving them a water dish but they would always end up stepping in it and playing with it instead of drinking any bit of water.

Their poop were always soft and gluey, sometimes even watery. While Girl (temporary name :P) always had a consistent brown poop, Ponyo's was of different shades of green. Although green seemed off, I've seen so many varieties of poop I don't know which one is normal! So... What consistency is hedgehog poop supposed to look like?

Anyway, a few days before her next appointment, Ponyo's condition went downhill and she could barely stand. Her genital area started swelling and the skin on her forearms started peeling off. (See images below.)

At the vet's, they didn't know what was wrong with Ponyo but gave her a single dose of a medicine, to deworm her. List of Ponyo's prescribed medications:
- Metrogyl, antibiotics (Diluted 3x) - 0.1mL twice a day.
- Bacidin, antiseptic - used to wash genitals and forearms before applying cream.
- BNP + Ketoconazole - applied on genitals and forearms.

So, here I am, extremely confused and worried about Ponyo... The following images are of Ponyo's condition now and mostly what I'm worried about.

(http://ift.tt/2aBhaQZ) Weak, weak Ponyo.

(http://ift.tt/2aAfBzx) Initial state of Ponyo's genitals.

(http://ift.tt/2aBgLOw) After applying cream. You can see her wound on her forearm here too. The q-tips are there to prevent her from curling up and getting the cream all over her, as well as to prevent her from licking the cream.

(http://ift.tt/2aAf9RP) Eyes - they seem sunken and unclear. Is this a cause for worry?

(http://ift.tt/2aAf9RP) Teeth - do they seem normal? Could this be a reason why she's refusing dry food?

(http://ift.tt/2aAgcRR) Poop - while I'm typing away, here's what she left in the 'observatory' I made. It's actually just a huge lunchbox with fleece bedding.

(http://ift.tt/2aBhAXD) Posture - she seems to crouch and always tuck her tail underneath her... It may be because of the inflammation of her genitals making her uncomfortable, but I'm unsure.

(http://ift.tt/2aAfELL) Just curious... What colour is she? Some tell me pinto, some tell me salt and pepper?

Thanks so much in advance for all your help! I really really really appreciate every single response I can get.

Just for LOLs - Ponyo the altar sacrifice!

How often do chinchillas pee?

My partner got a chinchilla two days ago -both of us are brand new to chin owners, this particular one was separated due to aggressive behaviour to other chins which is the only reason we are keeping one solo.

In 48h we have not noticed any wet patches, although the chinchilla is pooping and eating a lot. Is this normal? Do chinchillas pee a lot?

Help! Info Needed for 2 Month Olds

Hi All!

I'm fostering 2 Male 2-Month Old kits and they were just dropped off today. They didn't come from a good situation, so I don't know much about their life before now, but I know their mother died a few weeks ago. They have been eating Timothy Hay and drinking water from a water bottle. I've had several chins but all of mine have been adults, so I've never had babies before.

Any help on what I should and should not do as far as housing, food, etc. would be most appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Chinchilla goes Waaaaah

I woke up this morning to one of my chinchillas jumping off a ledge and made a weird noise. Its was like a 1-2 second long squeaky Waaaah noise. It wasn't incredibly loude, in fact the warning calls they make once in a while tend to be louder. I've listened to multiple chinchilla sound recordings and can't find this particular sounds. I'm going to make a vet appointment soon to get her checked out, but i wont be able to go untill after this weekend, unless this is some sort of emergency. This chinchilla is a bit of a drama queen though and has given me false alarms for attention before.

General Housing Questions (for 6 Month Olds)

I'm going to be fostering two 6 month old little boys. And even though I've had many chins over the years, I've never had chins this young, so I had a few questions:

1) Does their housing need to be any different than a full-grown chin? I've always had the double critter nation, but I'm wondering if they NEED to be in something smaller for awhile. At the same time, I'm HOPING I can buy something smaller since I will only be their temporary home.

2) Can they have a wheel in their cage? I have two great wheels from Bass Equipment. But I don't know if they are too young for that?

3) Anything else I need to know about what shouldn't be in their cage until they are older? Or what they should have in their at this age?

Any insight is most appreciated! I want to make sure I'm all set for their needs when they arrive.

Thanks,
Kelly

10 week old babies to good home!

We have three males needing forever homes! Not looking to make money, just to find them a forever home.

Long lost sibling pairing?

So I have a female chinchilla named simba I've had since April and a male named taz I just got recently. He is her sibling my friend got with me when I got simba we were told they were both boys and recently I found out simba is a girl then my friend sold me taz, which I couldn't be more excited about! But I have some concerns.right now they are in separate cages of course, but one day I would like to possibly have them in the same cage, that being said I would like to get one fixed but I don't know which one would be the best choice to have fixed tho, and as far as pairing them how long should it take before I can put them together after one being fixed if they do hit it off? Thank you in advance for helping:dance3:

Introducing and breeding concerns :(

Ok so I have one female chinchilla that I've had since April and honestly didn't know she was a girl cause I was told she was a boy and my friend was told the one she got was a boy. Well, I wasn't worried about gender or anything and never planned on breeding or even having more than one. So a few months go by and I come across a video on how to tell their gender. And then I just got curious and decided to check...and well, she wasn't a boy which didn't bother me ...so then my friend sold hers (simba's brother) to me and he is for sure a boy they are in separate cages.... Now I have no plans on trying to breed them because for one, I know nothing about it! And I'm pretty sure breeding siblings would not be a good idea...that being said I would like to get one fixed I don't really know which one I should get fixed. :/ any opinions on this? Anyone that can help that has experienced this situation?

forum i really need ur help since im all the way in saudi arabia and we literally have only one vet here that know's a bit about chins i trust him since he's been very good with us be basically performed a Pyometra surgery on one of my other chins and it was successful, i went to see him the other day and after googling bumblefoot on many forums online i saw everyone say baytril so i told him we need baytril he said no not necessary now...he gave me chlorexidine to wipe on the pads to keep it clean and told me to put soft paddings in the cage clean towels shirts ect since we have no fleeces in saudi arabia .....i also just ordered blu kote of amazon and hopefully the shop and ship aramex service doesn't give me crap about illegal products imported into stupid saudi arabia liquids ect....im so stressed and scared i don't want anything bad to happen to him, if he goes i will literally crash he is extremely important to me.....i feel so freaking guilty, his cage is ocd cleaned twice daily no wired floors just a flat solid cage bottom his bedding is in the corner of the cage which he doesn't sit on at all....... :( help....

Hello new here

Hi there, I have been an avid chinchilla momma for over twenty years, since I was a kid.
I love helping others learn about the amazing world of chinchillas.
My passions aren't kids, chinchillas, and refinishing furniture.

Look forward to meeting other likeminded chin lovers.

Hey guys :)

Well hi, I'm a teenager that lives in Missouri and I have two chinchillas
One girl and one boy and I just wanted to join this website to help me
With some questions or concerns I might have, and just to find and
Talk with other Fellow chinchilla owners!:wink2:
