2 female introduction failed
Hello all, this is my first post. Also please note that I am not a native english speaker- so sorry in advance.
I have 2 girls ( Chinchi and Coco) ; one is about 1 year and 3 month and the other about 1 year- I bought the first in september at 6 months and then the other one about one month appart thinking it will be good for them to have company.
I thought they will get along till now, but I quite lost my hope.
They live in seperate cages, next to each other.Sometimes they spary urine on each other from the cage. If they are outside they will always chase each other and make noises, leave hair behind- does not seem friendly at all. Once tried to but them both in one cage- was a disaster.Once tried to switch cages, did not work so then get used to the other sent.
Recenty I read about the Smooshing method and thought to read first more about it and also try the Cage in Cage method first.
I put the dominante chinchilla - Coco in the small cage (which was a pet carrier -http://ift.tt/299sQZd ) and then in the big cage. Chinchi investigated the new situation and was sitting on the small cage , both trying to get to the other one. After only 5 minutes, Chinchi jumped of the small cage and when into her hidding place- then I noticed that she was bleeding form her toe. The result was that Coco bit her toe of.
I went to the vet and Chinchi is recovering , she received an antiseptic solution. Please advise if you have any other suggestions.
Now i completly lost any hope for both of them to ever get along. I think if i had used the smooshing method the injuries were now worst. What do you thing, should I just do not try it anymore?

Too much alfalfa?
While my little guy has been eating great, he lost interest in his timothy. All he wants is alfalfa. I can get him to eat a little bit if I mix the two together, but all he will consistently eat a good amount of is alfalfa. He's on Oxbow so obviously only having alfalfa isn't good for him. I've tried different brands, it doesn't make a difference.
Any suggestions?

My chinchilla stinks
Hi
I've had my youngest boy for about two years now. He's in a seperate cage to our oldest as they fought and it got awfully bloody. But anyway. Just recently, Baby has started to STINK like pee. It's so bad you can taste it in the back of your throat and when I go to work I sit at my desk and I can smell it on my clothing. He seems perfectly healthy - his poop is fine, he eats, he's drinking etc. Anyone got any ideas? Cause it's getting to the point of I'll have to sell him if it carries on.

Gum flap covering tooth
Hi, was looking at Chunkys mouth and noticed he has a gum flap of sorts partially covering his bottom front teeth. the actual teeth look fine and he is eating and playing normal. Any ideas??

Catnip
I was curious if anyone knows if catnip is safe for chins. I'm currently growing catnip for my cats and myself, and was wondering if the chins can have some too, once dried out of course. The catnip is organic and grown from seeds I planted, so no chemicals on it ever.

Question about housing 3 chins together
I'm not a new chin owner, but I am new to chin kits. A rescue male I've had for 4 years was supposedly castrated, but I bonded him with a female in January who unexpectedly produced kits last week.
I think I have a boy and girl but not entirely sure yet. I have yet to work through the many issues/problems this birth has raised. I know there are several options, but one idea is that I could keep the girl kit with mum and dad (if I get dad neutered). Would that work? I know you can't have 2 males and a female together.

Quality Cage Crafters
I can't seem to find whether or not Quality Cage Crafters cages are made with chew proof wire? Maybe I'm missing it? Does anyone know? If I get one, the purpose is because my chin is chewing on the plastic floors of his current cage, though the wire is chew proof.
Thanks!

Bonded male chins in northern virginia
It pains me to have to put these guys up adoption, I've had them for about 3.5 - 4 years and have grown attached. There's been changes in my life (second child on the way) where these guys just don't get the attention they need.
Spaz is grey and Sprout is several shades darker though I'm not sure if is categorize him as black in color. Unsure about age since I adopted them from another person. Everything goes with them including cage, all linens, food, treats, toys, hay etc.
I'm asking $100 for the fellas and all of their possessions. Located in the Springfield/Burke area. Feel free to ask questions or request more pictures.

Chinchilla reintroduction after illness
Hi everyone,
I have 3 female chinchillas: Prudy, Hiccup and Baby. Long story short, we bought the first two without realising that Hiccup was pregnant and ended up with another little one! They've lived in the same cage very peacefully for six years, and Baby has been with them since the day she was born. They've never had a fight or had any problems.
Baby recently got sick with an infection and we've kept her in a separate cage away from the other two while she recovered to top the infection spreading. Now she's finished her antibiotics and has the all clear from the vet, we tried to move her back into the cage with the other two. For half an hour or so they were perfectly fine and I thought they'd be happy to be together again. But now Baby and Prudy recently started fighting. They're barking at each other (not in a friendly way) standing up to each other on their back legs and chasing each other around.
I've temporarily separated them so that Baby is on the top level of the cage (with Hiccup - she's perfectly fine with her mom!) and Prudy on the bottom level, but does anyone have any advice on how to get them friendly again? They've been living happily together for seven years, and they've always loved each other so it's so sad to see them fighting now :(
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Odd question regarding raw food
My kitten stays in my bedroom when I am not home to watch him, and at night. While he generally leaves the chinchilla alone, he does hop on top of the cage to watch him(I keep a towel down so he doesn't have access through the top). His claws are kept extremely dull and I have a CN so he cannot reach inside the cage.
I've been considering getting him on a raw diet. He's been having some diarrhea and I'm hoping a change in food will remedy that. Anyway... My concern is the risk to my chinchilla. Since he spends so much time in my bedroom, do you think it's too risky to feed a raw diet? It's also worth noting that my bedroom is carpeted, so I cannot wipe the floor clean like I would prefer.
What's your take on this?

Think my new chins don't like girls.
Well I have two new chinchillas Toothless ((a homo Ebony)) and Hiccup ((Dark Velvet)) we believe they are brothers because me and my gf adopted them from petco and according to the paperwork we got they came in together and are suppose to be the same age ((about 13 Months right now)) and they get along with each other great its rather cute, yet when I made the attempt to introduce my little lady Lily ((20 Months)) They both rushed her and attacked her and I had to step in almost immediatly, I did the whole Neutral ground meeting with toys and a dust bath and food scattered around the bedroom but both my new males ignored the tasty treats dust bath and new toys and attacked lily I even placed them on separate sides of the room needless to say my two males have a few bald spots and my female didn't lose a single hair and now dislikes those two males with a passion as she keks and sprays at them when she see's them, however when she see's her hubby ((boco 4.5 years)) or her baby ((Zero 3 months)) she chirps gets all happy pop corns and tail wags. So i doubt that my female hates males just these two new chins dislike my female as lily is a very social chin and doesn't shy away from being touched or giving whisker kisses.
Bedding
Good morning. I'm new to this whole thing so be kind :)
I just purchased a CN Double for my single Chin. I'm sure she's going to love all the room compared to the cage she currently has.
Does it have a pull out litter tray? It looks like the bottoms are mesh, if so then I need to put something over it correct? I read about BASS pan's and will probably order 1 (or 2?) of them.
I was thinking: Towels then fleece over it, with a glass baking dish in the corner with some Aspen so hopefully she'll go potty in it. I know with my Hedgie I could go a week and then wash all her bedding (towels, fleece, wheel) and put a new set down.
Does this should about right? Currently in the cage she has now the previous owner was just using puppy pads, and I don't like it.
All suggestions/criticisms are welcome. I just want the best for her.

Whats your Daily Routine
Im a new Chin daddy, and I didn't see a thread like this on here.
What's your daily routine?
I just got Zoey on Sunday, but here is mine so far:
I get off work about 5:30ish, I go home and eat do chores, then at about 7:30 every night we get her out. I have a long hallway in which I can put up 2 baby gates (so she doesn't jump over them) and close all the doors. We wheel her cage out to the hallway and open the door. She is still learning to come to us so we can pick her up and put her on the floor. We let her run around (she loves doing wall jumps) for about 30 minutes, then I put down her dust bath house. She does it about twice and continues to play. While she is jumping and playing I vacuum out her cage, she doesn't seem too scared of the vacuum which I am very surprised about. I give her fresh food and water as well. We let her play for about 30 more minutes and then we put her up for the night, or when she goes into her cage and wont come back out.
Am I doing anything wrong or could do something better?

Chin Wheel
HI, i currently have wheels for my chinchillas that are similar to the "chillawheel" but i home made them, they are great and large, 16 inches but are super loud at night and my two newest boys run all night long. i was looking around and saw 15 is the minimum diameter for chinchilla wheels, does this make he silver surfer and lenkas wheels unusalbe since they are only 14 inches? I know the chin spin is 15 inches, but it is also more expensive.
Picking up a chin!
I got a new chin, and she hates being held. My first chin I got over 10 years ago (and still have) grew into it but it took a couple years. This new one loves being scratched and petted and let's me feel her cute tummy, but I cannot pick her up. I was working with her and realized she will climb into my hands and on my arms but what she doesn't want is to be restrained in any way. This poses a problem as I don't know how to get her to the bathroom for play time so she can have time out of her cage. I have no problem working with her as chins are a hobby of mine, but does anyone know how I might get her to let me carry her safely to the bathroom and back? With my first chin I was stupid and inexperienced so I would chase her around the cage and snatch her so I think that may be why it took so long to get her to let me pick her up. Now I can just scoop my hand under her belly and lift her out of the cage no problem. So anyway, this new chin is very tame in one sense but in the other she absolutely freaks if you pick her up. If that's just the way she's gonna be no matter what I do I can deal with that, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to get her safely to the bathroom without stressing her out, I'd like to hear them! :)
Chinchillas keep fighting!
So i recently bought a new baby chinchilla for my 1 year old. My 1 year old chinchilla was very interested in the baby so i let them meet. At first she was just chasing her and jumping on her back. However, they just started barking and fighting and rolling all around. I separated them instantly. I have my older chinchilla in the upstairs part of the cage and the baby at the bottom. My 1 year old always tries to jump out of the cage but as soon as they go nose to nose through the cage, they bark and attack. This is my second day of having them & I'm hoping they will eventually get along. I think dominance is the main problem.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get them to stop fighting and be friends? How should i reintroduce them? & Why do they keep watching each other? Thank you! :)

Chin pairing: sleeping next to new chin's cage?
So I'm currently attempting to pair my 2 year old male with a 3 month old male using the side-by-side cage method. Their cages are currently about 4 inches apart. Since starting this side-by-side method, the older boy has been sleeping right up next to the bars of his the cage on the side of the new little one's cage. His eyes are closed when he sleeps, sometimes angled away from the little one's cage. I feel like these gestures are trustful, but I've also read that chinchillas in the side-by-side method like to "protect" their cage by staying on the side that the other's is close to; however, he's literally just sleeping... with his eyes closed. Could this still be his defense (vigilance?) or could it be a good sign for the pairing? He just looks so relaxed.
EDIT: And he doesn't usually sleep in that space; he started when we started the pairing process.

New Chinchilla!
I am going to be getting a 7 month old white chinchilla from Aces Up Chinchillas tomorrow and I'm very excited! As some of you know a while back I lost my female to Malo and soon after my male was also diagnosed with it. While I'm very sad by losing my 7 year old pair I decided things don't feel right without a chin baby around the house. I've been talking with the breeder and have made a few changes to hopefully prevent the new baby from getting malo.
I would love to hear any other changes I can make to improve my new baby's life.
I have a 3 level critter nation cage, but until we can get her settled in I'm going to have her in only one level. I use aspen bedding on the main floor with fleece covering the plastic platform.
I've got a bale of fresh horse quality Timothy hay. I've also got alfalfa/oat hay cubes, some compressed alfalfa pellets, old fashioned oats, and Un-frosted shredded wheats for treats. I'm feeding oxbow pellets as a primary diet.
For chewing I have lava rocks, loofa, willow sticks, and apple sticks.
Also it's been a while since I've had to tame a chinchilla what is the best method? Last time I just sat on the floor during play time and handed them a treat whenever they were nearby. To catch during playtime before they were tame I just left their carrier on the floor and would just close the door when they went inside.

New Owner, Hedgie to Chin
Hi guys, this forum is like a heaven send. Unfortunately my hedgie Penelope passed away a week ago due to my heat lamp malfunctioning. EVERYONE CHECK THIERS PLEASE!!! She was taken way too soon from us.
I found a Chinny near me that the owner was getting rid of due to landlord not allowing it. So far I am in love. I keep comparing the two though, like, my Hedgie wouldn't just sit out in the open like this, is everything ok! ha.
Today was the first day with Zoey my Chinchilla, owners says shes 8 months old. Shes kinda skiddish so I'm not holding her, but we did let her out in a secure area to run around for an hour to get use to us. I understand it will take a lot of time to foster that trust relationship and I'm excited to see it bloom.
The cage that it came with is a 3 level cage but I feel it is a little small, plus it doesn't have a pull out tray so I have to take the whole cage off to vacuum and clean the cage.
Done a dust bath tonight and she enjoyed it, the food the previous owner used I don't like, so I'm ordering some more healthy food and going to slowly transition to it.
Is there anything I need to look for or start doing? I miss my ease and "slowness" of my hedgehog, Zoey is all over the place, they sure do like to hop :)

URGENT - unexpected birth of 3 kits
URGENT please advise me!
My rescue chinchilla has just given birth to 3 kits. I wasn't expecting this and so have not prepared. I have out her in an indoor gp cage with her kits to separate her from my male (who has been mounting her). She is going mental in this cage and wants to be with Freddie, but their cage is too big and tall so not safe for her kits to be in. Should I leave her in the gp cage and hope she is going to settle??
I am totally freaked out by this.
Should I take her and the kits to the vets for a check or just leave them for now? I think she only had them in the 24 hours as their tails are totally straight.
i'm assuming a) that Freddie may well have impregnated her again already and b) the runt may well not survive. Is there anything I can be giving her to help keep her strength up? Thanks for any advice.

New Chin Bros
Hi guys,
I am about to get 3 kits (woo hoo!!). and I came across this community. I am really excited to welcome my new chins, but also have so many questions.
I have 3 guinea pigs for a while now (hope they get along during play time), and I know that chinchilla also eats timonthy hay. But I don't know if chinchilla kits need alfalfa hay more of timonthy hay or the mixed between the two.
I also need a good source of Blue Cloud Dust if someone in this forum is selling them or know a good website to order them!
Beside from those I have pretty much everything else ready!
Thank you.

Another Chin Color Question
So I was at PetSmart getting hay for my boy, and they have this guy currently (see photos below). Usually they only have standards, but he looks rather light. Anyone have a more-educated guess as to what color he might be?? I would say he's even a tad lighter than these photos make him out to be. (I'm sorry they're so large; I don't know how to resize!)
***I'm just curious; I do not own this Chin. The cage setup is PetSmart, not mine and I agree, it's horrible.

Chin color mutations
I know it's difficult/impossible to tell what mutations a chin is from look alone, but was wondering if anyone had some guesses as to this female I got last night. She's originally from someone who breeds, but the last owner that I got her from can't remember the breeder or what mutation she is.

R.I.P Rose
This is actually REALLY late but i figure its better late then never.
My Baby girl died 2 weeks after her birth on 03/09/2016 :( she died while i was away During my AT for the national guard and only found out when i returned a week later from the day she died, My gf did everything under the sun to keep her alive but she just refused to eat for whatever reason her death weight was 43 grams :( she was then put in a box and placed in our deep freezer till i got back and was given a proper burial in the back yard with her own little tomb stone. she will be missed she was very energetic while i knew her and was very curious unlike her brother.

9 year old Sapphire female
We got our baby Dizzy 9 years ago in Illinois before moving to California. Now, with the prospect of moving cross country again to the East Coast, we would like to rehome her rather than put her through another cross country move during the summer in which we have to drive.
She's been a lone chin since coming to live with us, and while she loves human interaction, she still shies away from being covered with a hand like I see some other chins warm up to. She has a double level critter nation cage that we would be happy to include if desired, though it is nearly as old as she is. We've replaced the plastic bases with metal bases with raised edges and terry inserts for clean-up.
She typically eats tradition food along with her timothy hay, and she gets the occasional raisin in addition to apple sticks for chewing. We will be leaving the state July 1st, so if we cannot find a good home for her before that date, then we plan to take her with us. We'd very much prefer an experienced chin owner to take her on if one is out there.
She loves to get exercise in her quality cage 15" chin spin, but it's getting old enough that it should be replaced soon. We never could convince her to try out a saucer type wheel, though we have that to include as well.
We are in Redondo Beach, CA. While we could drive to meet someone in the area, the cage would have to be a local pickup in SoCal if that interests you as well. We would be sad to see her go, but we think this would be in her better interest in the long run.
She's been a lone chin since coming to live with us, and while she loves human interaction, she still shies away from being covered with a hand like I see some other chins warm up to. ate plastic :(
I have recently joined the feet nation band wagon. I have the plastic covered with fleece, but my chin pulled up the fleece and chewed the plastic shelf. I will keep a close eye on her in case it causes a blockade. What should I be looking for? Is there anything I should do besides watching closely and figuring out a new way to cover the plastic?
noticing a few problems with new chin
I am just getting to know my new chin and since he is letting me get close to him now I have noticed somethings. He has 2 red nodules on his rear end and one of his front toes is red and swollen around his nail. He chews at it a lot.
He came from a wire bottom cage. Could this be the problem? Should I take him to the vet?

Chinchilla with a head tilt
I just bought an 11 month old chin named Cleo. She seems to be lethargic and zoned out. She stares off into space and doesn't realize I'm there often until I touch her wiskers. The main concern of mine is that she holds her head at a tilt, always with her right ear up. Is this normal?
Is my 4 month old chin underweight?
I've had Gandalf a black velvet chinchilla for two months now, and I'm worried that something is wrong...he hasn't gained any weight and weighs only 220g. Is this okay? I know it's low, but should he be gaining more?

Help! Paco the chinchilla!
Hi, I'm new to this and am extremely worried for my chinchilla, paco.
He is around 9 years old and he is a male. The last couple of days I have came home to an eye that appears to have had discharge and his chest has been wet. I know usually what this means and I'm worried for him and have no money to take him to a vet as I'm only a student in high school and money is tight in my family. I woke up this morning and his chest was again I believe from drooling and I haven't seen him eat much. He is still very active but I'm worried for his health and I have no idea what is causing this issue. If a chinchilla develops teeth problems will it eventually lead to their death? if so, how long? I feel terrible knowing he's probably in pain and there's not much I can do for him. Help and responses are appreciated.

Hello from Kansas city (Lenexa)
Hello!
I am a first time chin owner.
I got my chin yesterday from Mark Miller in Nebraska.
He is a 6month old violet male.
I have not settled on a name yet but I think Tom Petty. Since he really seemed to enjoy his music in the car ride home.
He has a small scar on his face he got when he was a baby.
I am unbelievability happy to have him. I am an animal lover and can't wait to get to know this little guy.

Vet Visit
I brought my first chin (6 month old violet male) home yesterday. He, as expected, is still very scared. I want to take him to the vet for a check up but I'm not sure when the right time is.
How long should I wait to take him on his first trip to the vet?

Lolo and Stitch are chewing each other's fur! :(
This is my first post. Have learned a lot since the first time I came on here in December.
Got my first chin, Stitch, in December, then got him a little buddy Lolo in March. From the first day they were introduced, they seemed to kick it off. They were cuddling and sleeping together the first night they met. I thought everything was working out great...
Fast forward to now, they are still friendly pals and snuggle to sleep. I haven't seen them fight, but every time I approach the cage there seems to be more pulled fur on them. I know for a fact that they are doing it to each other. It seems that they are grooming each other, but end up taking fur.
My question is, being at thaty is there anything I can do short of separating them to get them to stop pulling each other's fur out?
I'm afraid I may already know the answer..

Chin hidding under cage!
I just brought home my first chin today. (6month old violet male). He is used to automatic water at the breeder. The breeder advised me to put the bottle up to his mouth to teach him to drink from a water bottle. I went to do that after leaving him for several hours so he could get used to his cage a little.
When I opened the door to do so he leaped over my shoulder and ran under the cage (double critter nation).
He is set up in my walk in closet with nothing but him, the cage and his things.
I shut the closet door so he can get out.
After numerous attempts to get him back in I can't and I am worried I have stressed him out WAY too much.
I have no idea what to do.
Do I leave him?
Do I try to get him back?
I worry about him not getting proper ventilation with the door being closed. I also worry he will get sick from chewing on carpet.
I feel horrible. Please. Someone help.

Peeing out of anger?
Is it normal for chinchillas to start peeing where they don't normally pee out of anger or irritation? My eight year old male chinchilla Perkins has started a new behavior this year where he has begun urinating in odd places. A month or two ago, he started urinating in his hay dish. After the third or second time he did this, I replaced the bowl with a trough that hangs on the side of the cage. Then he started peeing on the roof of his wooden house and his hay mat after we rearranged his wooden house and wheel. He stopped this behavior as soon as we moved his house and wheel back to the position that it was in before.
Now, just last night, I noticed that he urinated on his little couch (which he has never done before). He is eating, drinking and looks and acts perfectly healthy. He was even running in his wheel last night. The only thing I can figure is that he is angry that we just got a puppy and he is displeased with my lack of attention (or the fact that there is just a new critter in the house). I looked into chinchilla incontinence, but his seemingly deliberate actions just don't fit the criteria. Is this just his newfound way of telling me that he is angry?

Moving with a chinchilla
Hello! Had a quick question about moving to a new house with my chinchilla. The new house is 30mins away but I don't have any small carriers because my others pets will need them. He also has a fairly large cage and I don't feel safe putting him in it on the ride to the new place. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!!!
Tail Mutilation :(
Gusgus is about 19 years old. I've had him about 10 years and he's always been an on again/off again fur biter. About 4 years ago I left him with a babysitter and ...he got heat stroke. I came home after a week away to find him bright red, on his side and with a bloody tail. Took him to the vet, got him taken care of but the incident caused him to start chewing his tail. The vet gave him anti anxiety meds which cleared up the tail biting after a month or so.
Fast forward to last December, he out of the blue began to chew his tail again. It horrible, bloody and the bites are very deep. I've taken him to see 3 different vets about this and the end result is a big idk. We tried the anti anxiety meds (no luck), treated for mites and pain. Tried the cone but the minute it comes off he's back at his tail and at some point he needs to be able to chew his toys or he's going to have teeth issues next!
Bottom line is he's hurting himself daily with no end in sight, the vets aren't helping and he's dang old. He sleeps more, misses jumps, falls off his shelves etc. I need a second opinion from another chin lover, but would euthanasia be in his best interest at this point? I check for infection every day, keep it clean and treat with a topical antibiotic but this has been bad for 6 months now...

New chinchilla owner with some questions
So I have an existing bonded pair of chinchillas, I don't know their age but they've been settling in for about a month and a half and will come play with me when I open their cage; they just don't like being held/pet yet. I got a second pair of bonded chinchillas, these girls are still growing and I'm assuming are around 12ish weeks? When they first arrived, after a half a day they started dropping wet poops, some were a little too soft.. they're also not pooping as much as I see my other bonded pair. I also skipped the quarantine period, I didn't know about it until it was already too late. I did some reading and I saw it might be stress? I took their oxbox pellets out and they have an inexhaustible amount of Timothy hay with some oxbow orchard hay mixed in too. I'm wondering if they might be sick? They play/eat/drink normally... but there aren't that many droppings and some (not all) are wet.
Another thing: my older pair of chinchillas usually gets along great, but Prim seems to be a lot more vocal than she used to be(since the new arrivals). I think she's making a warning call towards Teemo? There has been no evidence of fighting that I've seen, and they still cuddle up together sometimes (sometimes they sleep separately) could this be because of the new ones?
Both pairs have plenty of food/hay (only the older ones have pellets at the moment due to wet poops from the little ones) wood chews/hidey houses/ledges and the older ones have a size appropriate wheel
Also, does anyone have any tips for me on getting them all in the same cage eventually? I have a double level critter nation that I'd like to convert into a three story and put the new ones in there.

Female chinchilla in Arizona
So, I have a female chinchilla about 5 years old. I absolutely LOVE her to death, and I've had her for about 3 years. As much as I absolutely hate to do this, it isn't working out anymore. My life has recently gotten soooo busy and the poor thing gets no more attention.
I wanna be sure that she goes to the best home possible, so I came here instead of craigslist. * I am willing to drive a good distance for the right home. *
She is super sweet, definitely not your normal chinchilla. She loves to be pet and held and she gives kisses for treats. She always has so much energy and is ready to go no matter the time of day.
She's never been housed with another chin, so I am unsure of how she would do, but ya never know.
I am selling her with her CN cage, and all of her supplies.
Her supplies don't include much
-whatever chew toys and food I have left
-some ledges
-A couple of houses with pillows
- A chin cube and hammock
-water and food dish
-whatever dust is left (I just bought a 25lb bag)
And of course her and the cage
I am hoping to sell it all for $200 OBO
If you have any questions or want pictures of anything you can PM me on here, or I can give you my Email through PM.
Thank you for reading!

Need to find a Chinchilla breeder between San Diego, California and Boise, Idaho
Hi, I am moving From SD to Boise. I have been doing research on Chinchillas as pets and they seem to be an amazing fit for a pet. I am moving from SD Aug, 14th and driving to Boise. I want to avoid buying a Chinchilla from a pet store so I was hoping I could be referred to a Breeder that will be on the way (or close) to my drive. Obviously the closer to Boise the better so I don't have to put the chinchilla through the stress of a car ride.
Travel/shipping
I have a chinchilla I need to get from Seattle, WA down to Jacksonville, FL.
I am wary of sending him alone in the cargo hold of the plane as it's so hot in Florida and there is no telling if he would be exposes to the tarmac heat for long.
I have been told some airlines will allow pets as carry ons, but only in soft sided carriers. Obviously this is less than ideal as the chin may try to chew through the side.
Does anyone have any experience with carrying a chin on a flight? Any recommended travel carrier? I have a side by side (2 hole) Ryerson carrier, but I am uncertain if it will be sufficient to travel in on the plane.
In addition, does anyone have any experience with actual airlines that will allow transport of chinchillas?

Lump found!
Hello!
My hedgehog, Nettles, went to the vet this past Saturday. My mother noticed her eyes look weepy and her face slightly swollen Friday night, so we took her to the vet. My mother describes the look as when a person has a cold and they just look sleepy. When we got to the vet, we noticed a lump on her left side near her ear. The vet took a sample and gave me an antibiotic. The vet also said she had discharge from her eyes. The antibiotic has helped that a ton and her eyes seem much brighter.
The vet told me if the lump goes down, it's an infection, but if it doesn't, then it's cancer. However, she acts totally normal otherwise. Eats like crazy, drinks water, everything seems to be working normally.
Has anyone else ever experienced this?? I'm impatiently waiting for our follow up next Saturday so I'm just wondering what others have experienced. Or if you have any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Solo Chin
I've had a single chin, Chloe, for about 6 years. I got her as a single chin and as far as I know she hasn't lived with another for any significant period of time. Hearing the horror stories of chins fighting made me nervous. Also, if they don't get along, I do not have room for another cage the size of Chloe's current one. Though I'm sure I could figure something out if it would possibly make her happier.
I've heard mixed opinions on the subject but generally it seems like it would be healthier for them to be in a small group or a couple.
I wouldn't mind having another chin at all but I want to be safe about it. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Bloat?
I'd love some opinions.
Bean feels slightly bloated to me, so I've started him back on the cisapride and simethicone. I also still have metacam on hand if necessary. Still eating, drinking, pooping and peeing. Chewing and bouncing around like normal.
He did start this new thing where will lay on the cage floor, something I haven't seen him do. He was never one of the chins that sleeps that way, but he's taken to it recently. Now that his energy is back and I haven't finished ledges, his cage is empty and he's rather bored. Whether this is actually caused from him feeling bloated or not, I'm not sure. He hadn't done this before and he was in worse shape then, which is why I guessed it was because he's lacking fun things in the cage at the moment.
Is there anything I can do to prevent him from bloating after this treatment? Should I just make it a regular thing to give him simethicone as a possible preventative?

Want to trade a new Flying Saucer for Silver Surfer or Leo Braun-style
I've got a brand new "Original Flying Saucer", standard size. It's not going to work out for the type of enclosure I've got her in...takes up too much space. I'm willing to trade it for a silver surfer wheel or Leo Braun-style wheel in new condition. The flying saucer is fully assembled and has never been used. It comes from a smoke-free home.
Need opinions on food/hay/toys!!!
Need two or three (or 50) opinions. I found two websites that chin parents seem to like and found some items on each that I'd like to get her. I have grass allergies so I'm looking at hay cubes or pellets instead of the standard hay. Any thoughts? Any favorite toys for chins? She loves pumice and she loves sparkly stuff (my engagement ring and sparkly watch).

Bag Balm for Chinchilla feet?
New chinchilla, no history. She's got some thinning fur on her back feet on top (inside toe on both feet). Her toes are a bit red. Her pads are really dry and cracked. My vet thinks she's allergic to the aspen bedding and wants me to switch to using a fleece liner. She also thinks her previous owner was giving her too many dust baths. She recommended putting bag balm on her feet a couple times a day once I switch to the fleece. Also wants me to do a dust bath just once every two weeks until this clears up. She said it is not Bumblefoot.
Anyone else used bag balm? Any known problems? How often did you use it?
I heard it's got a natural antisceptic in it which will help prevent infections in their feet.

First ever message board!
Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself. Just rescued a female chinchilla from a bad home. So glad I found this place. Bit overwhelming right now but I can't wait to learn from you guys.
Can't wait to meet fellow chin owners (or do they own us...I always get that mixed up)!!

Massachusetts chinchilla available for adoption
I have a grey male chinchilla that I am trying to find a new home for. I live in the Worcester, MA area.
I am not sure of his exact age, we have had him for about three years. My guess is he's between 5-10 years old. My wife's friend gave him to us after they had him for a couple months, they no longer wanted to take care of him so they offered him to us. They had gotten him from a teacher that had him as a classroom pet and I think before that he came from a broader.
He is the first chinchilla we owned and we did our research before we took him and we have taken good care of him. We will be moving out of state in a few months and we just aren't gonna be able to bring him with us.
I'm not sure if he has ever been around other Chins but he likes to be petted when he's in his cage but he doesn't really like to be held. He's pretty energetic when I let him out to play and will climb on me and jump off the walls.
I'd prefer someone who has owned a chinchilla before and knows what type of care he needs. But I am also open to a first time owner as long as they can show me that they know what type of special care they need. I just want him to have a good home since he's had several owners in the past. He also comes with the cage and accessories of you want them. There are two metal shelves that I also have that can go in the cage that I took out since I have the wooden shelves in there.
Please message me if you are in the Massachusetts are and are interests in him, serious inquiries only please.
Im not sure why the pics aren't uploading, I'll try to load them again later but I can also email them to you.

Not sure sure about my new chin (long story)
About a month ago we got a 3 1/2 year old girl chinchilla to make friends with our 1 year old girl chin. My boyfriend and I both work full time and even though we spend every chance we get with our baby Zoey we wanted her to have a friend so she wouldn't feel lonely during the day or night (our work schedules are always changing). Well I think its back firing on us. When I first found Maizy she sounded sweet and playful just like Zoey and I thought it would be a good fit. The person I got her from said she has never sprayed urine or bitten and loves to be held and petted by anyone. The day I got her the girl couldn't give her up fast enough. She never gave me a chance to ask any questions and told me shes moved around a lot. And I didn't like the way the cage she was kept in looked. It looked very sad with hardly any toys and there was no place for her to hide. Thankfully, I have a large double cage that can be either two cages or one very large cage. And I was appalled with the way she aggressively put her into my carrier. So naturally I'm glad I took her to give her a good home. But shes not getting along with Zoey at all! I feel so bad because Zoey will run up to her cage and make the contact call in a friendly way and Maizy instantly sprays her. After about a week or so of holding one another up to the cage with no violent behavior we introduced outside of the cage and when Zoey went up to Maizy, Maizy attacked her and it was chaos. So there has been no more out of cage play together. I know this could take a long process and they may never bond but I really want Maizy to work out with us. Maizy has also bitten and sprayed my boyfriend multiple times and she will barely let me hold her. But I can pet her. So my question is how can I help the bonding process for Maizy? I want her to feel safe and secure. Also, I have recently brought them both to a vet who cares for chins and they are both perfectly healthy.

advice on getting a 3rd chinchilla
hello people i have been up to a local pet store and have seen a lovely male chin who looks like he would love a new home, i jave 2 male brothers atm and i have a large cage over 6ft long so their would be enough room for another, how easy or how would i go about this? i have seen a few methods online about a cage within the cage and that but as i have 2 chins i dont think that would be best if i had to put the other 2 in the smaller cage thanks
