Chin stopped taking gas drops

So I have been giving my chin gas drops cause she is slightly bloated. She has been taking them no problem the last two days. Then today when I tried to give them to her, she refused. Sniffed it, turned her head away, rubbed her nose and walked off. I tried giving it to her a few times a day but she just wont take em!! All of a sudden it is the grossest thing on earth! All she does is turn away from the dropper or pushes it with her paw. I need to give her these so what can I do??

Need Help With Medication Dosage

Jameson was in the emergency vet tonight. I just removed his second massive fur ring of the week (he's been getting them a lot lately) and he was displaying symptoms of another urethral stone (squatting/straining, pressing his lower abdomen to the floor). Xrays revealed no stones, thank God. This vet doesn't usually work with chins, but she suspects he may have a UTI or other bacterial infection due to the fur rings and urination issues they cause. She sent me home with Metacam (susp per ml/.6ml) .2cc every 24hrs and SMZ TMP (susp per ml/10mls) 1.2cc 2x per day. It's been awhile since I've had to give either of these medications, and the dosages seem high from what I remember. Is there any way I can double check the correct dosage? This vet admitted that Jameson was the first chinchilla she'd ever examined and the tech was having trouble converting his weight.

I'd also like some ideas on how I can do a better job keeping his genital area clean? Ever since Jameson had his stone removed he's been peeing on himself (he was marsupialized during his surgery). Initially he developed a case of urine scald, but every night since I discovered it I clean his genital area and inner thighs with a baby wipe, then I apply neosporin. He has some fur loss in those areas, but it's no longer red or inflamed. Is there a better way to keep this area clean? Also, he's been developing gigantic fur rings every few weeks (2 in the last 4 days). Besides removing the fur ring with KY gel is there a way for me to clean his penis so bacteria doesn't develop in his sheath (I'm not sure if that's the correct term for the anatomy, but that's what we called it on horses when I used to ride).

Planning to consult with an exotic vet this week, but I'd like to make him more comfortable until I can get him in. We just moved so I've been hunting for a new vet. :-(

Introducing my two females.

So I got a 10 week old chinchilla a while ago, she is beige and as cute as can be!! I already had a 2 1/2 y/o standard female. I have been working on introducing them for the past couple weeks here is my story so far and I also have a couple questions.

I started out putting their cages side by side and having separate playtimes where they couldn't see each other during these playtimes. Mayah (my standard) is a very curious chin. So she was sticking her nose through her cage trying to get to Serenity (the baby) she even reached her paws through the cage trying to pull Serenity's cage closer. Well after about 5 days Mayah acted like she wasn't even there, and they were perfectly fine to have their cages next to each other. Well after this I put Serenity's cage in the room where they play and let Mayah roam freely. I then switched them, let Serenity out while Mayah was in the cage. They did do some sniffing and Mayah attempted to bite her nose which I stopped. Then after each playtime id put each chin in each others cage for about a half hour. After another four days of repeating this process, they had their very first playtime together yesterday. I put houses, toys, hay and dust baths so they wouldn't be so focused on each other. It worked well. Mayah did start to chase her twice which was immediately stopped, other than that they did pretty good. Today they had their second playtime together and there has been a bit more chasing. We are still working on introducing the two of them.

Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Is there something else I should be doing?

Is the chasing normal at first?

What signs should I be cautious of?

Thanks for reading!! (:

Looking for a locken chinchilla in arizona

Metal tube safety question

From what ive seen, most ppl use some kind of coffee can or what not with both ends cut off and filed down for there tubes; then cover it in fleece. Are the tubes safe without the fleece? Im not sure what those items are made from. But my girls are chewing up there fleece tube cover a good bit lately. (and just when i was getting rdy to make them fleece liners to >< )

Pet-sitters?????

Hi all, I was wondering if any of you know of a chinchilla pet-sitter in Vancouver B.C? I might have to go somewhere for a few days, and was hoping maybe someone could help me out? Im not sure exactly when I have to go, but I need to make sure there is someone who could pet-sit.

Thanks :)

Plastic, Crossbar or Too Small Wheel?

Hey,

Here in England its a bit hard to get a metal wheel that's a good size, and I think its the same with some othef countries. So I'm wondering, if you really had to get an exercise wheel for your chinchilla(s), would you choose a plastic, crossbar or a wheel that's too small (10 inch+)?

I personally would choose one that's a bit too small as plastic can be dangerous if digested and a chin could break their legs or tail on a crossbar one, so if it is a bit too small then while it would make it a bit difficult to run on they wouldn't really get hurt physically. I made this choice today because I've planned a space for a wheel but I couldn't find a suitable one, and I've just seen some 11 inch metal wheels on ebay.

What do you think?

Oh Dear.....

Through an honest mistake of the husband, little Blueberry got the tip of a finger bitten off by Mela. There is bone exposed. We just got back from the ER vet with some Batryl (oh no not again) and Metacam for her pain. They put Gluture on her finger (which she has been constantly chewing at, so my hopes of it holding are slim to none) I was told if if didnt hold, then surgery would be needed. I have Glueture as I groom dogs, so I guess I could always re-apply if needed. Im hesitant about surgery as I know anesthetizing chinchillas isnt always safe. So, have any of you had luck with a nipped finger with bone exposed healing without surgery? I dont care what I have to do to keep her cage as clean as possible, I dont care if I need to clean her toe eighty million times a day. Ill do whatever needs to be done if anyone has had any luck and suggestions regarding this to avoid surgery. Ive read too many bad stories about chins going in for a simple surgery and not making out due to the anesthesia.

Male Chin Introduction

I recently got my Male chin (Kai - 6 Months old) a new chinchilla cage its a critter nation one that could be separated. And yesterday I got a new chinchilla male which is 4.5 Months old. Kai is a very shy, not very active boy. And the new one (un-named at the moment), is quite hyper. They currently living next to each other, the new one in his own cage. Kai was interested in him at first, but most of the time he doesn't go near him. They have touched noses before through the cage, but that's about it.

Today I put out the sand bath in the bathroom and let 1 chinchilla out at a time, with the other in a carrier. Kai approached the cage and put his nose in and the other one did the same. There was times where the new chin started scratching at Kai & banging in his cage. Not sure if its a sign of being aggressive? Or does he simply just want to come out and see Kai?

Let me know what you've done to introduce 2 males since I've never done before.

I only re-introduced 2 females that were sisters, and used to live in each others cage. Their re-introducing with her kits took at least a week. No fights, no pulling out fur. Just a slight bit of aggressive rising up on their feet and looking like they would bite each other. And chasing each other until one hides.

I also heard males are easier to introduce then females?

Beautiful 1.5 year old black velvet female for sale ARKANSAS

This is a really hard decision but I am looking to sell a 1.5year old healthy female chinchilla. She is black velvet and beautiful. She was living with our male chin but after having a baby wasn't able to live with the male anymore and we have had many failed attempts to reintroduce them. She comes with a large super pet cage, small house, a couple ledges, food bowl, and water bottle. $200 for all.

Ledges!

Ok, so its time for a drastic in depth cage cleaning again. Always fun with full double FN's. Along with that i wanted to make two sets of new ledges. The current old ones are far to dirty for my liking. And its been so long i dont even wanna try cleaning them. So i made two full sets for each cage. That way i can periodically take one set out to clean and put the other one in there so they always have ledges up.

Having recently moved to PA, i was sadden to see the supply of hanger bolts in local stores. Lowes (which i always used in NJ) did not even have standard hanger bolts. There's all had a unthreaded (smooth) bar in the center. And Home Depot workers couldn't even find them in the store the first time. When i did get them, the thread disintegrated right off upon use. It was horrible.

I eventually got them else where, but they were sold in a bag off 100. And it was there last one in stock. Needless to say i don't think ill be using quite that many in two cages. And there is no point in keeping that many around with no use, so figured id sell some ledges if anyone needed them.

--

I can pretty much make them to what ever dimensions you want as long as the wood comes in that size'

Most boards are listed as 6 or 8 inches wide, but there are a few 10" and 12" ones. Tho its worth noting for anyone unfamiliar with wood size that the width is usually half and inch or so smaller then the listed size. So in reality a 6" wide board is really 5.5"

Thats a basic one i made to replace the ones in my cages. 5.5" x 6" (with the width being 5.5 and me wanting the screw side 6 inches, i had to make it 6" long and then use that side for the hardware.

I always use atleast two hanger bolts per ledge. Only one in the center can cause the ledge to start turning/unscrewing to one side when a chin jumps on it. So i use a min of two for safety. Each Hanger bolt uses two 1.5" washers so they fit around 1 inch bar spacing nicely. And uses a wing nut for ease of putting on or off the cage.

PM me or leave a post here with any inquires or sizes you are looking at and ill get you a price.

Woods available: Poplar (what i use for my chins), Aspen, and Selected Pine.

Dust bath challenge :D

http://ift.tt/1nL544x

So adorable, I can't handle it. He dove head first into my dust container in one of the other attempts... He's so cute♥

I didn't even try it with the other one. He would have hated it.

hay

I sent my daughter into the store to buy timothy hay, she did buy timothy hay, but it has chamomile is that okay or should I return it and get something else.

Hedgehog quills turning PURPLE? (PIC)

I purchased my first hedgehog from a college student on craigslist about a month ago. I noticed she had a small purple patch of quills on her back. I thought it was really cool, but possibly a sign of sickness. After research, I found NOTHING about hedgehog quills turning purple. It seems like the patch maybe grew in size since I had her, but I am not positive.

If this is a health issue, I would like to know what is causing the problem. If it is harmless, I wouldn't mind if she turned completely purple. It actually looks quite amazing. Pic below

At a loss

Hey all,

I'm hoping I can gleam some hope from everyone here. I have 3 chinchillas, 2 that live together and 1 that lives on his own - he tends to be quite domineering and aggressive. I've had the one for almost a year now and he still won't let up on his aggression. There are some days that will be better than others, but typically it's just nips, bites and cacking all over the place. I give him treats - raw oats - and play time, I try not to stress him out too much but he just acts like he's petrified of me or just hates me.

What can I do to bond with my chin more? I hate to think that he hates me and I'd hate to "give up" on him and re-home him.

quality cage metal shelf

Has anybody tried quality cage metal shelves? What are your thoughts on them compare to the wooden ones?

My chins like to pee on the shelves and we have to change the wooden shelves all the time, not sure if the metal ones is the solution.

Thank you! !!

Looking for models

I enjoy doing art and have been getting various commissions lately. I'd love to start doing more chinchillas and could use some in my portfolio. I am doing my own babies but would also like to do some others. If anyone has some good photos of their chins, any good antics or adorable poses I'd love some reference photos! I will post any artwork I do and we can discuss me mailing it if I pick your chin. Once I figure out chin drawing I may also open up to commissions, hopefully.

So if anyone has some nice chinny pics they'd be willing to let me use please share! I would love a nice chocolate or tan or unique mosiacs but anything will do!

Introduction help.... and more

Introduction trouble...

Alright so... I got my second chin in May. Since June, I've been trying to introduce them.

Personality wise... Chilly is quite the sassy little guy. I got him from my brother who had bought him at Petco(he was bought for his kids but when that didn't work out, I got him). That being said, I'm assuming that he wasn't handled as a baby. I've had him since November 2013. He was about 6 months old when I got him, so he's almost a year and a half old. Anyway, he's the sassy one of the two. He kecks like crazy if you hold him, but he is okay if you let him jump on you. Scratches are amazing, as are pets. His back/butt is off limits though, or he'll keck and run off(though he comes right back as if it is a game Lol).

Momo is way more relaxed. He was from a breeder, therefore he is comfortable with being held. He can get a bit grouchy when he is woken up but otherwise he is super friendly. He is just very easy going, so there's not much to say about him.

Now... I've had their cages near each other for a while now.

I have tried the cage within a cage method:

I've tried it in all ways that I could. I've done Momo in the small cage and Chilly in the large one, I've done it reversed, and in each of their cages.

When Momo is in the small cage, Chilly will run up and go after the bars. I was worried about him getting one of his toes so I haven't pushed it. If Chilly is in the tiny cage and Momo comes up to him, he reacts the same. It doesn't matter what cage he is in, he does the same thing. Momo doesn't behave badly until Chilly acts out. This makes me think that Momo may be fine with another chin if it is just as laid back as he is.

Here is an older video of Chilly in his cage, with Momo in the small cage. This was his reaction when I took the cage out and set it outside his cage. He won't jump around like he did here, he will just stay at the cage biting at it aggressively. I think he does that a little bit in this video. He doesn't make those sounds anymore though. http://ift.tt/1u2jgu0

What method would you guys recommend that I try? Or should I pitch the idea all together?

My bedroom is the only place(temperature wise) that I can let them out for playtime. Since both cages are there, it's not exactly a neutral area either. Once it's winter, I could try the neutral playtime thing.

I also didn't want to try smooshing them in a carrier with how they were reacting with the cage within a cage method. Any opinions would be helpful!

My other issue...

As I said up there, Chilly won't let you hold him. I understand that not every chin likes it and you have to deal with it, but does anyone have any tips? Not only is he wiggly but he kecks like he's ready to bite my hand off. He's never bitten me or anything and he comes right back as if he didn't care, but I don't want to hurt out relationship by reaching for him all the time. I'm thinking my brothers kids were rough with him when they had him and that's why he's so afraid(or it was just Petco's poor handling that caused it).

He will allow me to hold him if he jumps into my arms but I cannot actually hold him(it's more as though he's just sitting on my hands, I cannot hold him to my chest or move him around or anything).

Either way, there will be times when I NEED to hold him. How would you recommend me deal with this?

That's all. :] Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to give as much information as I could. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. :]

Chinchilla prolapse penis, need help

hello i have a male chinchilla(his name xiaobai, 1 year 3 months old, that have been prolapse for 1 month.

Here are the story,

on middle of july 2014, i found my male chinchilla(xiaobai) penis prolapse(not swelling, redness or swollen etc) in the evening, once i saw my chinchilla having his penis prolapse, he start to lose his appetite day by days and laying down quite often, not so active as before, but drink still normal/drink more then usual sometime, so i decide to bring xiaobai to our local animal clinic, once the vet told me it was nothing wrong with his penis and the vet able gently push back his penis, he also told me chinchilla penis prolapse will come and go sometime , so i feeling much better to hear no problem with xiaobai, after xiaobai back from the clinic the day after, his appetite become lesser and lesser, but he still drinking alot of water sometime(60-70ml a day), so i observe xiaobai for 2 weeks, and everyday eat abit of oxbow grass hay & pellet, he leave the bowl of hay and pellet untouched, so every 4 hour i would change his bowl of foods, he start to stop pooping , everyday he only have a few small poop, weird round shape, irregular size, so i decide bring him to animal clinic again to find a senior vet which have well know for chinchilla, after the vet look into the problem i have told the vet when it happen, he reply me that maybe his having some digestive system problem tat build up gas in chinchilla stomach, and he told me the penis prolapse nothing to worry about cause there is not swelling/swollen/redness etc, and the penis look normal, so the vet only give me a medication call cisapride give him every 0.4cc every 4 hours (3 times daily), after i bring xiaobai back home , i start to give him the cisapride medi he take it with no problem at all it seem he like the taste of the cisapride medi, after i give him the sec time of the cisapride medi , he start to poop quite alot, but the poop of the shape still look weird and not normal size, no problem on urine and start to eat quite alot of oxbow grass hay & alfalfa hay, drink 60-80 ml of water a day now, after he took the cisapride medi couple of days , sometime it seem tat he don eat again, sit at corner with eyes half closing like he in pain /illness , but he still eating quite alot and drink alot of water. Every time i apply ky jelly on the penis and gently push it back and its when in , after an hour or couple of hours , his penis come out again, then i will need to put it back again , everyday i do this more then 4-5 times daily, but he keep like chewing or bit his penis more often like 5-6 time a day or more , but there is no hair ring or swelling etc.

sometime he still eat and drink alot, will it still be dental problem ?

because if chinchilla having dental problem or pain in tooth he/she will stop eating or drink right?

i look all over the internet , lot of chinchilla breeder say that when chinchilla penis prolapse due to both pain/illness/ dental problem , once he fully recover from illness or pain , the penis will retract itself and everything back to normal. is that true ??????

anyone have this problem before? can share with me how to solve it ?

please i really need advice & help!

already been 1 month now :(

Thank Alot !!!

Are these considered treats?

Hi

I received a whole bucket full of mrs pastors horse biscuit and was wondering if these were considered as treats?

I have a 8wk kit and I known you're not suppose to give them treats till at least 6months. But would you consider the biscuits as a treat? Should I wait till he's 6months in order to feed them to him?

And if not, how many of these cookies can I give him a day-weeks?

Colour vs personality

This is probably a dumb question but here I go.....

I will have a choice of colours when I come to chose my new chin and I was wondering if different colours have different personality traits.

I have owned hamsters now for over 6 years and I have noticed a pattern with the colours and personalities. For example out of the hamsters I have had: cinnamons are laid back, banded hamsters are placid, tortoiseshells are naughty and my grey was very clever. Not to mention the dwarf hamsters (I could go on forever).

I am thinking of going for a male because the male animals I have had all seem to be a little more chilled than the females. But having never had a chin I may be completely off the mark!

As for colour I am not really concerned because I want the chin to be happy and healthy first. But I would like to know if there is a patten with colour and personalities. Are there any health issues related to colour also (like white cats with blue eyes are likely to be deaf).

I really hope this makes sense! Sorry for the essay and potentially dumb question! :))

New chin with wet eye

Hi everyone, this is my first post here and I'm feeling rather desperate at this moment. I bought this chin one month ago who was born 2012 Nov. Within the first week arriving home, he developed constipation and I brought him to the vet to have that cured. But recently (since last Friday), I noticed one of his eyes got wet. The fur is wet. There might be a tiny teeny white goop at the corner of his eye and the corner might be a tiny teeny pink. But that's all. The eye is still bright, widely open. During recent days, it does not get better or worse.

He is fine in other aspects. He has strong interest in chewing toys and is able to destroy them pretty fast. He eats plenty of hay and water. When he is out playing, he still does wall surfing, exploring, and hopping. He is not losing weight (He lost some due to the constipation, but no further loss in at least two weeks). Based on these I think he is happy and not in pain. I'm guessing he has got eye infection or allergy?

I am going to take him to the vet if things do not get better in a few days. But I do know such problems can be very stubborn and sometimes even vets cannot cure them in a short time. So I'm looking for more ideas to at least give me more choices and more hope.

To be a little emotional, I feel so frustrated now. This is my first time to be a 'parent' and I feel overwhelmed when handling such health problems within a short time. Maybe I'm over anxious or maybe I'm still not careful enough. I also regret that in the past I never truly appreciated the gift of being healthy. Nevertheless, I will learn to be strong.

Please help!!! I dont know whats wrong!!

I dont know whats wrong with my chin. She has gained weight, her stomach is bigger, it feels hard. When I press a bit on her just to feel, she squeaks. She isnt nearly as active as normal, she sleeps most of the day, normally in a hunched position only standing on her back paws. She doesnt stretch or roll and I read that was a symptom of bloat. She eats and drinks fine. She doesnt poop as much or as often as normal. She does kinda have mood swings. One moment she will be very friendly and just sit there and let me massage her, then other times she wont really wanna be massaged or around me. She barked once today which she NEVER does and it freaks out my other chinnie. Is she pregnant? does she have bloat? Does she have something else wrong? Is there anything I can do or any herbs I can give her?? I would take her to a vet in an instant but unfortunately I can not afford one at the moment. PLEASE HELP I AM WORRIED!!!!

I also posted in the Health and Hygiene section, but I am so worried I felt like it was an emergency.

Chin feels bloated!! She barks and acts a bit different. HELP

Recently my chin has been acting a bit differently. She is sleeping more, eating her food really fast, not nearly the crazy active chin she normally is. Well the past couple of days I have noticed she has felt bigger, more bloated. When I pick her up from kinda her stomach area she does a little squeak, does it hurt her? She is barking a little bit and she NEVER does this. My other chin gets freaked out when she barks. I would take her to a vet in an instant but unfortunately I cannot afford it at the moment :( Does anyone know any herbs or anything that may help so she doesnt die, and so I can avoid a vet?? If there is nothing else I can do then I will try and find a way to take her to a vet. Just please help all you can, I am worried!!

sorry for the long post...

Fleece vs bedding?

I've always been a bedding person but honestly, I'm getting a little fed up with the messes it causes. And I've seen quite a few chin owners who use fleece as bedding which makes me curious as to its advantages.

I'd like to try fleece but I'd like to hear about people's opinions first. And I suppose it would also mean that I'd have to try to litter train my chins if I do change to fleece... I think.

I'd like to know all the advantages and disadvantages. That way I can make a clear decision.

Thank you!

Kit losing weight

I recently got a new kit and noticed she has been losing weight. When I got her at 8 weeks she was 298g. I weighed her at home a few days ago and it was 228g, I figured it might be a different scale, mine is old and might not be calibrated. Today it was 208g so I know it's going down. She is still acting like a kit, jumping around in her cage. I see her eat hay and have seen her sniff at and eat pellets. Her tail is not curly at the moment like my other chins. She is pooping and peeing normally and her cagemate whom I adopted her with is doing fine.

Any ideas? I am worried about her. As I said she is acting fine, besides the tail being long and flat ( curled sometimes) and the weight loss. I am also giving her supplement I got from the Ryersons.

Painting around chins

Is zero VOC paint safe to use around chinchillas?

Two beautiful girls stole my heart!!

Hi there!! I'm the proud mommy of one little human boy, and two little chin girls!! They are all equally spoiled and they all know it lol.

There is not much else going on with me beyond them, all of my little children are my life at the moment!!

So, HI!!

From Alecia, William, Athena, and Daisy!!

Don't cry over spilt milk, but chin food, yes!

I cleaned my chin cage yesterday and realized I JUST had enough food to last them until the 1st, which is my payday.

My two rambunctious little girls usually NEVER mess with their food, but last night they went crazy (I had visitors that were cooing all over them yesterday, and I think they were still wound up from all of the excitement...) Anyway, They went nuts, knocking over everything in their cage. Nothing was left on the top and middle shelves, and all over the wire bottomed floor : the last of their food embedded in the bedding.

I was able to salvage some, but only enough to barely last the day.

I literally have no money to buy any food, my son was sick and, well, that was the last of my stash of cash.

Anyway, I need help!! I am not sure what to do for food for the poor things !!

I have oatmeal? Lots of hay... Baby food, that's about it :cry3: HELP!!!

Chinchilla has dreams and nightmares

So every time Mayah ( my chinnie) goes to sleep she either has a dream or a nightmare. In her dreams she twitches and acts like she is running and doing happy squeaks. But recently she has had a couple nightmares, moving a lot and she has been barking in her sleep. The barks are very loud kinda high pitched at times. I go over there to wake her up and just massage her to try and make her feel better. Has anyone had this problem before?? Should I be worried? I want her to be able to sleep in peace, I dont know what could be triggering her nightmares I have never ever treated her badly since she has been here, and as far as I know she hasnt had any traumatizing experiences. Please help!!

General Tips Wanted

Hi,

I have already done heaps of research as I want the best for my soon to be chins, but I always welcome some more advice. I had reserved 2 boys a couple weeks ago and it is now a month until I can pick them up. They are Pepper, a 4 week old standard grey and Chili a 9 week old brown velvet, they are unrelated however the breeder is bonding them for me. Their cage is a 70 x 42 x 104 cm, but it had ramps and wire levels which I know was not only dangerous but it left absolutely no space to put anything so I took them out and am in the process of getting safe wooden shelves. I have brought a nest box, water bottle, food bowl, a hammock and have plenty of cardboard tubes and other wooden toys prepared.

I accept any tips for my two, but I have a few questions on some topics, so here it goes:

I would like some more advice on setting up the cage and I will post some pictures of it in September (on holiday now). Also I want to know how to chin-proof my bedroom as they will have an hour out every evening, I mean I know to hide wires and plastic but other than that. I am having a hard time finding a metal wheel or saucer so can they do without it if they have play time? I think I will upgrade their cage in the next few years but not yet as I don't have the money and since they will be young I think their current cage is big enough for now, but when I do have money, when is the best time to get the new cage? I know its good any time but I mean like when do they stop growing more or less and if there is an age where they get most hyper, I was thinking when they are two so is that a good age?

Thank you!!

I wrote a chinchilla book!

We all know how terrible the current chinchilla books on the shelves are. So I decided to write my own book. It has taken me pretty much all year, but I finally am close to being done. I just got my proofs in the mail today! YAY! Now I just need to do all of the edits and add my table of contents, and I'll be done.

What do you think? Does it look okay?

And here's a video of me flipping through the inside so you can get a general idea of what it looks like

http://ift.tt/1sy0VUR

Chin nearly gives me a heartattack, I (almost) learn a lesson

Henry is fortunately totally fine, but gosh did he give me a scare today! It was sort of my own fault, though...

So, I was doing my usual wellness check. Bright eyes, bushy tail, four paws with all toesies present and correct, no hair rings, no mats, just a few loose tufts of fur... Oh no. Then I felt a bump, deep under his coat. On pulling back the fur as best I could, I could see a red lump. A tumour, or some horrible wound? How could I have been so careless as not to have noticed sooner? My poor precious doomed wriggly darling, who won't let me get a proper look...hold still just a sec...

Hang on...that looks, suspiciously like...

A goji berry. A goji berry, stuck in the poor fluffball's coat. Oh.

Yes, I know, I know. He only gets one as a very very occasional treat, usually it's healthy stuff. I figure this one probably fell out of the packet, because I didn't give it him loose or he'd have eaten it right away.

A quick snip later, and the berry was safely detached, fortunately without too much trouble or further stickiness as it was mostly just attached to a few hairs, though close to the skin. I was torn between making a huge, tearful fuss over my newly miraculously healed precious baby, and cursing up a storm over the fright...so went with both at once.

So, I guess I have now learned a new, additional reason to be careful with chins and dried fruit - it's sticky! I'm sure his perspective on the whole thing would just be 'waste of a good goji berry', but he's enjoying his healthier dried herbs instead, for now!

Finally!!

So Chilly and Momo pretty much ignore their hammocks. Chilly pays absolutely no attention to his and Momo will bounce around in it, but never sleep/hang out in it.

I had purchased a fleece hanging house from Shooper and put it in Chilly's cage. Again... He payed NO attention to it. He didn't even touch it.

I finished Momo's cage(since he was peeing in his litter box, I opened the top half for him) and tried putting it in there. Later I walked in and saw this....

I about cried of happiness. <3

Building my own cage interior

I bought my chin cage off of craigslist and I dont know what kind it is, but after doing more research I am not happy with it. I would have liked to build an entire new cage, however that will have to wait until I can afford it. So I've decided to redo the inside of the cage and build all my own interior stuff. I will be going to lowes and home depot to get the supplies needed in a couple weeks. I have a few questions to get me started. I have done research and I continue to research so I know what I will be getting myself into :)

1. What wood do I use to build the ledges, houses etc.??

2. How do I hang them to the cage? it is 1" bar spaced cage.

3. How do I clean all the poo off the ledges and stuff?

I am sure I'll have more questions as I start to build. Also if some of you could post pics of your cage setups so I can kind of get an idea of how I want to do this, would be greatly appreciated :) I am open to any extra info you can give me.

Hair Loss on Chinchilla's Tail

Hello, I have a year old male chinchilla. He has never had any problems and shares his home with his best friend who is the same age as him. But the other day I noticed a bit of his hair on his tail is completely gone. He is not behaving strange and doesn't have any signs of chewing at this tail. Where the hair is missing, to me looks fine..I don't know if it was a simple fur slip or something more. So any help would be appreciated especially if it is something of an infection so my other chinchilla doesn't get the same thing! Thank you guys!

Cage mates help!

I just put my chinchillas together in a cage they've had play time in the hall together before and it's always been fine, but now that they're in the cage together they keep mounting each other trying to show dominance. My older one sometimes seems fine then other times seems annoyed by it all, and he will be a little more rough when showing dominance. They haven't fought but I'm wondering if I should keep them together? Will this all calm down? or should I separate them? It would be great for them to be cage mates but I just don't want either of them to get hurt because I made the wrong decision! Anyone have any advice?

Oh God, he swallowed it.

GUYSSSS I need help/advice from you all, asap... ( I usually post on Canadian chin forum but atm I really need answers from anyone and realize it's late so I'm posting this all over the place)

Chai and Loki have/had been doing fantastically as of late, but my little bugger Chai did something silly during playtime tonight. They were out in their pen and I was playing with them as usual, letting them use my hands and arms to climb over, when he suddenly grabbed hold of one of my rings and in a split second broke off a piece of baltic amber from it. I immediately tried to see if he had it in his mouth so I could take it away, but nothing. Then I looked all over the playpen, hoping to Almighty Thor that the little thing had just fallen off, but it's definitely not there.

I think he ate it.

It's a 4mm semicircle/circle of baltic amber. So it's technically not all that big, but this is still the equivalent of a toddler swallowing a toonie or something in my mind. I'm pretty worried, since I haven't had to take either of these two to the vet at all since I got them, we've been super healthy.

I've taken Loki back to the cage for now and am keeping Chai in the playpen for a little while to observe him. What should I do?

Please help D: ._.

I'm gonna take a picture of the ring using my phone in a second and put it up here as well. just need to get my phone.

Homo ebony born to two violets?

I was talking to a breeder about a kit she had last week and was curious about the genetics, and if anyone had heard of something like this before. I placed a deposit on a homo ebony v/c male. Now both of his parents were violet! His paternal grandfather was a dark violet wrap but that is the only ebony in his pedigree from grandparents onward. He and his brother are both homo ebonies!

Father and Son

We found that our Chinchilla had a baby 5 days ago. We didn't know she was pregnant. We want to keep the baby (boys) and have the Dad and baby neutered so we can keep the the 3 of them together. I am reading that even if we neuter the males we cannot leave them with the Mom because males will fight. I don't want to keep them separated because I see how much the Mom and Dad as missing each other while the baby is with the Mom. So is there anything I can do to be able to keep the family together?

Thank you for any information.

Link not working

Hi :wave3:

I don't know if it is just me having a problem with a link on the forum or if the link is actually broken. It is the chinchilla sounds sticky with the link to http://ift.tt/1BTaHau I can't seem to open the link on my computer and I get a 404 error.

Sorry if it is just me who is having the problem

I broke my chinchillas paw :'(

Hi,

I was cleaning up my clothes and suddenly one of my chinchillas was in front of me i didn't see her and now i broke her front left paw.

Im so scared that she won't be able to use it anymore. will she be fine she will get proper surgery tomorrow but im so scared that she will lose that paw i can litterly move her paw too left and right....

Doesn't like being held....

We have an adorable (and stubborn) 4 month old we named Chernople. He's awesome! This is our first chin and we're so happy with him. We've had him about 2 months he's basically a good boy but he does not like being held. I know most chins don't but I worry about an emergency. When we need to groom him, or if we needed to get out fast or, especially I worry about this, administer medication or first aid, I'm not sure we could.

He does climb and crawl on us and lets us pet him. He'll sit on us during playtime and bond but if you make like you're going to pick him up, he bolts. Sometimes if we do get him picked up, he'll sit for a bit but he always bolts. I'm afraid he's going to take off and hurt himself. I've heard you can hold them by the base of the tail but I'm scared to try this.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it!!! I feel I should get him used to being held in case of emergency but I don't know the best way to go about it. Or am I wrong?

Thank you!!

Need some help

About a week and a half ago i noticed my hedgehog had bad swelling around his mouth and a lump under his chin that had literally just appeared out of nowhere, and it looked like there was something stuck inside his mouth and he couldn't close it. I checked to see if there was any food stuck in there and there wasn't so i took him to the vet the next morning.

she said he had a large abscess inside his mouth and partway down his throat, she has drained the abscess and cut it away but the bone is very badly eroded, she put him on some antibiotics after his operation and said that if the soft tissue heals over the bone there is a good chance he will recover.

He has been on the antibiotics for 8 days now and i haven't seen any change in the swelling, the lump under his chin looks the same and his mouth still looks like it is prised open.

He isn't very active at all, he hasn't eaten anything for two days now. I've been giving him sugar and water but he will only take tiny bits of it.

How long does it take for swelling to go down after an operation like this? do i need to take him back to the vet.

thanks x

Various Other-Animal Items for Sale

I used to list these sort of used items on my webstore, but the time spent listing them versus the money made.... not worth it. So I'm listing them here for a short period of time before they all get recycled or pitched (except food bowls/water bottles). This is the entire list, some of this stuff is safe for chins, but some not, so if you're looking for just chin-safe stuff, check out the list I posted in that section.

These items are all used.

Everything's available for pickup in Hammond, IN (northwest Indiana, right off 80/94), or they can be shipped.

If you want a lot of stuff, let me know and we can make a deal. I just need this stuff gone.

All items are used. The water bottles will all come with springs or hooks to attach to the cage. The dusters I have oodles more of, I'm not going to take pics of all of them. Some have minor rust (but if that's a concern I can try to find you one with none/very little). Items have all recently been cleaned, may just have a little dust on them.

Pic 1 --11" wheels -- $2 each

Pic 2 -- 12" silent spinner, 12" flying saucer (plastic) -- $3 each

Pic 3 -- 11" wheels -- $2 each

Pic 4 -- 8" wheel, food/hay holder, metal hay rack -- $1 each

What are safe for chinchillas to chew on?

I just got two chinchillas and I am giving them a new cage tomorrow. The only thing in it are two plastic shelves for them to sit on. Because I am keeping them in my bedroom I don't want to have any wooden material in there because it makes too much noice when they chew on it. Are there any other option for things they can chew on?

Help refurbishing ferret nation?

I just bought my second ferret nation, I got my first one on Black Friday a few years ago and recently found one on craiglist for 80$! It is a two story, 142. It was used by a groomer and is kinda beat up. Some spots being rusted, does anyone have experience with cleaning cages like this and refurbishing them? What type of paint should I use on it, and what to get the rust off? Plastic pans of course have been tossed and bass equipment pans have been ordered. Having never fixed up a cage before I want to make sure it is entirely chin safe.

So how can I remove the rust? What is the best way to paint it, or any brand that is okay? Thanks in advance.

Issues with getting chin out of her cage

So we have had Coconut for 3 going on 4 months. She's my daughters pet and was a pet store rescue and I know that can have adverse affects on a chins social behavior.

She has actually been great exception for one issue: she hates being held.

Now that by itself is not a big big deal. Other than that we pet her, scratch her all over. She lets us scratch her chin, belly, neck with no problem. She will even climb halfway on my palm and let me rub her underside. During playtime she will hop up on us, shoulders, head, lap, she will wall run and bounce off the walls and occasionally popcorn.

She has nipped a bit but never drawn blood and I know the difference between her kind of scratching her teeth on you and an more aggressive nip. She has done the pee spray only twice that I know of but never to me just to my daughter who was probably annoying her at the time.

Now the issue is getting her out of the cage for playtime. Her safe room is our master bath which is pretty big for a bathroom so there is plenty of room for her to run around even with two or three in the room with her.

She's really smart and picks up things fast so tricking her only works one or two times before shes on to it. So the whole dust bath trick isn't good because I'm afraid she will stop using it and then she's all dusty for playtime. Tried a small box but again she learns that trick quick and won't get in it. I have tried moving the cage back and forth to the bathroom which worked for her but is not really a long term solution for us as its pretty big and kind of heavy. Tried letting her go on her own but she has to travel thru non safe areas (maybe about 25-30 ft away) to get there and will then avoid at all costs to go into the bathroom resulting in us chasing her around and under the bed even though we try and herd her toward the bathroom. I try rewarding her with plain Cheerios when she gets to the play area and back to the cage successfully. She loves plain Cheerios as a treat.

Funny thing is when she wants to go back to her cage she will literally come to your feet AND LET YOU PICK HER UP! I can carry her for brief moments but she is constantly on the move which I have learned to deal with and don't have to much trouble handling her. If she is tired she will kind of settle down a bit more and let me hold her without struggling too much.

Last time I took her out I waited till she was zoning a bit and just swooped in and scooped her up but shes seems to know when playtime is now and won't come out of her little houses and stays hidden. If I try she will run all over the cage trying to avoid being picked up. Its like she hates being held more than she likes playtime. Now one thing is she has a pretty large cage that she seems to love with three little houses and lots of levels, perches and a big running wheel.

I just need an easy and consistent way of taking her out of her cage that works for her and us without stressing her or us out too much.

Sorry for the long winded post, here is her cage

Cage Choice (Help!)

Hello :wave3:

I am new here and I do not have a chinchilla yet, but I am hopefully going to add one to my family in the early months of 2015. I am researching cages at the moment and I have come across 2 that I really like the look of. Would I be able to get some opinions please?

The first is the Aurora 450 by options/rosewood.

The dimensions are:

81cm H x 104cm L x 60cm D without the wheels/legs

(32"H x 41"L x 23"D)

Price: £100 delivered

Pros: Metal base which slides out, splash guards around the base.

Cons: Small door to the front of the cage.

The second option is the Royal Suite 95 by Savic.

The dimensions are:

120cm H x 95cm L x 63cm D

(47.2"H x 37.4"L x 24.8"D)

Price: £170 delivered.

Pros: double opening doors for easy access and metal splash guards.

cons: plastic bases (will need adapting).

Now I want to get this right from the start so I have some questions before I go ahead and buy one of these cages.....

1. Would the Aurora be big enough for a single chinchilla that will have play time every night in a chinchilla proofed room?

2. I have read different opinions on how important height is to a chinchilla. Is height a must for a chinchilla cage?

3. I know "the bigger the cage the better" is usually the way to go but money is obviously a factor. Is the Aurora a decent cage in the eyes of an experienced chinchilla owner?

4. I was hoping I could build a set of stairs for the chinchilla to use to get in and out of the cage when he/she likes during play time. The small door on the Aurora could be a problem and prevent me from doing this. Is there another way of allowing you chinchilla to return home when he/she wants?

Any advice is really appreciated and I am sorry if I am asking silly questions. :))

Oxbow bedding discontinued, need help

I've been buying the Oxbow bedding for my chins and I really like it. Well I just read that Oxbow is discontinuing it so I can't find it anywhere. Any suggestions on new bedding that does a good job and is safe for chins?

Not eating much and droopy tail

My 1 1/2 yeah old chinchilla hasn't been eating much the past 2 days, is almost always in his house, isn't curling his tail, and isn't as active as he normally would be. I can get him to eat some and I know he's drinking water and he'll also nibble at his poop and hay. He'll jump on top of his house sometimes and to his favorite sitting spot in his cage from time to time but most of the time it looks like he's trying to sleep. I've also had him outside of the cage to see what he does and he'll hop around and be his curious self but he isn't being as energetic as he normally would. His poop is also smaller and a lighter color then his normal poop would be. He'll let me pick him up and hold him for a little longer then he normally would. His eyes have that sparkle to them and as far as I can tell he hasn't broken anything. I'm just really worried about him and not too sure what to do. The only thing different I've done that I can think of is change his hay. He seems to be doing better a little more so then worse today. I also own a 6 year old chinchilla (in a separate cage) and he a seems to be fine.

Peeing on the spot while eating

My Chin, who was always good about peeing in his litter box, has decided within the last 2 months to pee on the spot while he is eating his hay. At first we thought it was just an accident, but then it started happening more frequently and now it is an everyday occurrence. I don't know if he is just being lazy because he still goes to his litter box. However, while he is eating, he will just sit there and pee on the shelf. It is getting so saturated now and although we can sand it and change the shelf itself, and we had done so twice... it would be nice to see him go back to his old ways. Has anyone encountered this behavior? Or any suggestions you may have to curb that habit?

New Chin Owner and Member

Hi everyone! Glad to be part of the Chin family. This is my first Chin and we are in St Augustine, Florida. We've had Chewy for about 8 mths now, we are his second owners as the first owner gave him up because their daughter was too young and wanted a pet she could squish. We love him to bits and he makes us laugh constantly with all the cute, quirky things he does. We recently started this obstacle course for him and he would push the things to the side, tuck it under his body and kick it with his back legs... it's pretty darn cute!

I do have one concern, within the last 2 mths, our Chin has been peeing on the spot while he is eating his hay. I don't know if he's just being lazy or if it's normal behavior. He still goes to his litter box to pee, but we have noticed that while he's busy chowing down on his hay, he will just pee and that spot is becoming really saturated. My husband built an 8 storey "condo" for him, so it's easy to change the wood panels, but I'm not sure how to have him not go by his food during the night. Has anyone else encountered this?

Mixed messages from my chinchilla

Hi everyone!

Ok so my chinchilla has been giving me mixed messages lately. I will sit in front of her cage and she will come up to me and let me pet her under then chin and I give her a treat for being good (trying to show her I am not going to hurt her), but not even a minute after I stop petting her and I am still sitting in front of her cage she backs into the corner and begins spraying me.

Quick background: I have had her a little over a year and she has always had behavior problems I believe due to two previous owners who did not have time for her. She dislikes being handled. I have been working with her every day, but she has seemed to regress recently and I don't know why?

How can I correct/treat this behavior?

NOTE: My biggest concern here is the 420 chinchillas that are now going to be in need of a home :(

Best thing about owning a chin?

What is your favorite thing about chins? Is it the soft fur that's like petting a cloud? The cute chubby faces? Psychotic episodes? Dust baths? Just what's makes these little fuzzies so wonderful to you?

Favorite color/ Dream color

I am aware this has likely been done a lot. But I thought a recent poll might be fun! What is your favorite color? Or dream chinchilla? If price did not factor in, and it was guaranteed to have a food temperament and most importantly be free of genetic issues

Hehwhoa!

Hehwhoa everybody!

My name is Doresa, and I have finally made an account here on CnH. I found out about this place through my baby: Stephen Elsbree. He's owned a chin 5+ years. His name is Henry (Standard). Henry was adopted from Petsmart; he had some health issues, so they couldn't sell him. Stephen used to work there, so he rescued Henry! I have been a chin owner for 8 months now. Together, we adopted our two cage mates, Snowball (Mosaic) and Puddles (Beige). We introduced Henry to the two, and we got lucky. They accepted him and are now all three cage mates. We then adopted Cheech, a large standard male. His owners were going off to pursue their careers and travel around the world; they needed a good home for their little guy. I think he is very happy with us. And most recently, in May, we added our newest addition: Halo (or as I like to call him, Halogen.) He is a beautiful Pink White chin that we adopted from Hendryx. Really lovable little guy. I love all of our chins; they all have their unique personalities. They are a lot of work, but they are worth it.

So, more about me then...I work for Sheetz, getting close to two years now. I just returned back to school to pursue a RN degree. I work full time, and typically am enrolled in classes full time...while also trying to take care of a house, six animals, and my hubby. I admit, my house chores often fall by the wayside, but I'm trying to get better at managing EVERYTHING. :) Things I also enjoy are artwork and photography, cooking and baking, hiking, swimming, gaming, and just animals. I have a passion for animals- I think. I am always doing research and trying to find out more about my chins. I also hope to have horses someday.

Anyway, that's a little about my chins and me!

Another question

I have a question about my two baby chins who were born yesterday morning. The runt has gained 2 g since born and the bigger one hasn't gained anything. They're both lively but should I step in and hand feed it some? I just don't want anything to happen. My question basically is, do they usually always gain weight their first day? I see they should be gaining 2-4 g a day? Is this correct? Thanks!

Hi from Ohio

HI!!! I am interested in getting a Chinchilla but wanted to talk to some Chinchilla owners before I get one. But first a little about me. My name is Megan and I just got married last year to my wonderful husband James, We are the happy parents of 2 dogs, 1 horse and lots of koi and fish. I also was the owner of 5 Hedgehogs but sadly the last one has passed, so after 12 years I find myself with out a small animal and was looking for a friend that has a longer life span. I know that hedgehogs and Chinchillas have different requirements and needs. I have spent a lot of time researching them but I know that the best way to know more about owning a pet is to talk to one of the owners. I keep my hedges on fleece and that seams to be ok with Chinchillas as well but I wanted to make sure, what the best bedding is, I am also wandering to know the best place to get a GOOD chinchilla. (no pet stores pets for me) I do live very close to a breeder, but am a little apprehensive of getting one of there baby's. They do shows and seam to do pretty well at them, but they are also a fur breeder, and that is what makes me nerves. How much time are they able to spend with the baby's to get them social, when they have hundreds of chinchillas to care for? Should I get a craigslist baby that has no pedigree but is used to be handled? I am also wanting to know the best way to choose an easygoing chinchilla that should hopefully bond with me. And yes I do know that sometimes they just wont bond, and can be hyper. I am also wanting to know what to expect for pricing. I am finding a HUGE range form 75 to 1,000 and I even was on one sight that wanted 13,000!! I was also hopping to get a list of the best foods and dust to use. Soo that is all for now but for some pics of my herd :)

First should be my male E-Che, second Tonja, then Gambit, Storm, and Rogue.

Moldy Ledges?

I bought some apple ledges to use in my degus new cage, however, noticed eye issues with one and took her to the vet and she's blind. I was concerned about moving her to a new cage but her vet said she had her sister to show her around. I continued buying different things for the cage, and her sister became ill. While their vet was looking into a tricky surgery, her sister didn't make.

I again became concerned moving her to a new cage but this time by herself so I moved the new cages and the supplies to storage. I boxed the apple ledges up (with other ledges and shelves, etc) in a diaper box with the flaps closed (not taped up or nothing)

Recently, I've decided I wanted to start looking into preparing the new cage for Lily (blind degu), however, when I brought the stuff out of storage I noticed the apple ledges are covered in mold. None of the other things in the box had mold on them.

Anyways... long story short...

Are the ledges no good or can they be cleaned off?

Just for the record, I want to state that I in no way think the moldy ledges are the seller fault which is why I am not contacting the seller. I bought these ledges sometime last year.

How can you even tell?

When most mammals get overweight, it's obvious. That said, when I tried to look up obesity in chinchillas I got nothing whatsoever. So is it possible to tell is a chin is fat by looking? Or do they look the same as a healthy one that's especially large?

Do comparative photos exist?

Introducing Qwerty and Elphaba

Both are from Susan Lamb of Chincherubs. Qwerty is the sweetest homo ebony, she rides around on my shoulders and snuggles against my neck when I read. As can be seen she lives up to her name and loves watching the ipad. ( she is named Qwerty like a keyboard). She will hopefully get big. She was a quad and weighed 298grams at 8 weeks.

Elphaba is more hyper, like well, a chinchilla. She is 6 months old and is a TOV violet wrap.

640g-448g, difficulties in finding cause. Long post, sorry.

Hi,

My chinchilla Egon is now 12 years old, and he’s always had some issues. But now I can’t seem to help him, he’s losing weight fast. My regular vet has sadly fallen off a horse and is badly hurt, and we can’t see her anymore. We have no vets with chinchilla experience nearby.

6 years ago we had similar issues and we went 300 km away to a vet that many claim is good with chinchillas. They made x-rays and said Egon has malocclusion and is going to have to be put down within a year maximum. His teeth are going to pierce his eye-socket, they said. He’s now 12, and this hurt my trust in these vets a little bit – but I’m saving up so we can go there again. Everyone makes mistakes and I really need to try everyone I can at this point.

Egon has the following issues:

• Few droppings, they’re small and thin. Usually hard (though they’ve always been).

• He paws at his mouth.

• Gnaws teeth sometimes.

• One of his incisors grows too fast and is cut every 2 months at one of the local vets.

• Doesn’t eat hay, and has never eaten hay except when he was < 2 years old. He's never liked toys.

• Weights 448 grams, usually weighs 620. Was at his normal weight 2 months ago.

• Eats critical care with appetite and begs for more. Eats 2-3 pellets every day but crumbles these. Still going down in weight however.

• A bit of a watery eye, but very much less than what he’s had the first time (6 years ago).

• Runs around a lot and talks a lot when doing so. Doesn’t seem to be constipated? Though for every day he’s less and less playful.

• Gets metacam once every day (2 drops) because of his teeth so he would be able to eat. He’s been on metacam for several months, but we give him a lot less than he’s prescribed for.

• He’s sometimes a bit wet under his mouth. I suppose his teeth are causing this?

We brought him to the vet recently because he didn’t eat so much and he made strange noises from his nose when he was running, like he was sneezing. The vet looked in his mouth (after cutting his incisors) and said one of the back teeth looks irritated (the flesh is too much red, not sure how to translate – hope it makes sense) or swollen.

She also heard a strange noise from his heart or lungs, but wasn’t sure what it was. The other two times we went there to cut his teeth the vet didn’t hear these sounds anymore, so she ruled out heart murmur.

Wow. Can anyone even bother reading all of this? I’m not sure where to begin and we couldn’t get an appointment before the 28th. Could it be his teeth? Could it still be malocclusion?

I’m guessing surgery is out of the picture since he’s so old. This pains me a lot. :( I would pay anything for him to survive just one more year.

Yours sincerely,

Stefan

Chin Treats?

Does anyone have good chinchilla treats that they feed their chinchillas? I feed mine cheerios, only one a day, because the breeder told me that cheerios were the best treats for them. I am too afraid of buying the store treat mixes, as who knows where they were in the manufacturing company. I do buy woods from the store for them to chew on, and ledges and such.

I heard that if you make little quaker oat balls with water that is a good treat for them. Is this okay?

I also know that there are websites where you can buy handmade chinchilla wood treats and they all come from someone who does it through their home, or it is a small business. Does anyone know any websites like this? I love to spoil my chins, so any info would be appreciated! :)

Looking for *iheart chins*

Someone nominated their chinchilla for Pet of the Day, her email address was in pert, "iheartchins" - is that someone here? I responded via email, but never heard back!

Hay

Hi all. I was wondering how long I can keep hay in my chinchilla's cage. It's in a hay rack, so it doesn't get dirty. Can I keep it for more then a day? Can i just wait till she finishes it then refill? Also what about the pellets? Do I have to change it everyday?

Help! Indiana to germany!

I have recently come across the opportunity to move to Germany sometime in January.

I am having trouble finding out how to take my baby boy with me. From what I have read so far, pygmy hedgies are allowed to be kept at pets, but now it is the part of getting him there & doing so safely that I am having trouble with. I need a some research buddies out there to help me gather info. Maybe someone on the inside to tell me what airlines will allow hedgepigs, hopefully some at a fair price.

Coconut oil on chinchilla

Last night I accidentally got a tiny bit of coconut oil on my chinchilla's fur. There was a little bit on my hand without me noticing. Her fur got messed up and it looked like it was wet, so I gave her a sand bath.

The next day when I went to check on her her fur still looked the same as it did the night before, but it dried. It's kinda hard to explain.

It was like darker and kinda matted. She is acting fine and all. I was just wondering if i should be worried or if it'll go away over time? Is there anything I can do? I combed it through with a chinchilla comb, but she didn't enjoy that much..

Picky eater! Diet Change?

My girl is 2 months old, she is a picky eater. I tried changing her diet to a walmart food. It was a fiesta blend for chinchillas(before I read up on them.) That was only for a day I had that food in there. I wont be switching her to that. I am wanting to switch her to Oxbow Pellets. Because its better for her Nutritionally. Since she already picks through her food and decide what she wants or doesn't want now. Will I be able to switch her food or will she just completely reject it. I don't want waste money on the food if she just refuses to switch healthy. I want to make sure she is healthy.

A little update on the chins ^ . ^

Just thought I would make a little update for all of you. ^ . ^

Both of them are doing great!

Chilly still detests being held but he's sociable enough. I've been making more fleece liners and tube covers for both of them. He still wants nothing to do with Momo but I'm still hopeful that I can get them to be cage mates one day. He's started this new thing where he burrows into my shirt... It's the cutest thing♥ Nothing else has really happened with him. :]

Momo is more comfortable around me, as he tends to torpedo into my lap whenever I open the cage. XD He will soon have the entire CN, as I was restricting him to half of it for potty training purposes(which is finally going well XD). I've been making ledges and fleece so I could fill it up. It will still be a work in progress but at least he will have more room. :] He has a terrible habit of dumping his food, so I just ordered a bowl to hang on the side of the cage.

I actually made them some chinchilla cookies and they loved them! I wasn't sure how often I could give them to them though(they're made of mostly pellets and hay, with a bit of oats), so they haven't had many.

The cat finally stopped climbing up the cages. The most he does is watch them now... Can't complain about that. He never went after them, he just wanted to be on top of the cage. He can be such a pain, but I love him. XD

Here are some photos of Chilly, as well as his cage(won't show Momo's yet since it isn't finished).

Any tips on the cage would be awesome. ^ . ^

Help determining genders

I was blessed with two healthy 64 and 56 g standard babies this morning and I need a little help determining the genders. This is my first litter so I'm not too familiar with sexing them. I did take a picture to hopefully get some help. Sorry for the not so good photos. They just didn't want to stop wiggling :) I hope the pictures go thru as I'm having a hard time with them.

Baby won't eat

Any suggestions on how to get my 10 week old baby, Meeko, to eat? I brought him home on Saturday and he won't eat anything for me..not even the kibble! I've tried unspiced pumpkin and chicken sweet potato and pea brown rice baby food too, with no luck! The only thing he has eaten is mealworms...about 12 of them. How long until I should syringe feed or visit the vet?

My previous hedgehog would eat anything so I have no experience with picky eaters!

I had a really great post typed up but my iPad signed me out before I could post it...so I'm sorry if this is missing details.

Should i feed more?

This is one ive never had to deal with before with any of my chins.

A little background info. When i took in my first chin, he was on some type of pet store food with all the little 'extras' in them. I eventually switched them over to Select Series Pro pellets. I started by mixing them a little bit to ween them off the old food slowly. After the very first night of feeding them the mix, i came in the next day to see that they ate all the new food and wouldn't touch the food they were used to. Which shocked me to no end.

So they have been eating the Select Series Pro for a number of years. When Chico was diagnosed with diabetes, i had to switch his food. It was switched over to American Pet Diner pellets. What i didnt realize at the time was that i ordered a Timothy hay based pellet. I usually stick to alfalfa based pellets with timothy lose hay to give them a rounded diet. But i was stuck with the Timothy pellets for a while. They ate it, but wernt thrilled with it.

I got the bags of the Alfalfa pellets in and started using them. Not only are my boys eating every last pellet, but they want moooooore. My boys who dont want to be disturbed when they are starting to wake up for ANYTHING; i have found them awake and at the bars already excited when it was feeding time. 0.0 Even some times when i check on them in the morning to spot clean cages, they will come running out to the bowls and stare at me excitedly. its unbelievable. Ive never had this kind of excitement from a chin over pellets before.

Now i always measure the food i give them. Only so i can gauge there appetite. I usually give each chin 2~ tbls. But they have been going through that and more every day and are still wanting more.

Im not sure just how much i should give them, and what a limit should be. Ive never had a chin that might reach that point before.

Question

I was looking around for some information and found this, I am sure I did not know this or maybe I am crazy and I did?

Chinchilla chinchilla and C. lanigera were formerly considered one species until some researchers recognized size and color differences among localities. Since the wild populations of C. chinchilla are rare, it may not be possible to further study this taxonomic issue. They are currently considered separate species based on ecological and morphological data (IUCN, 1982). The species may have coexisted in the northern part of the range of C. lanigera and the southern range of C. chinchilla (Jimenez, 1996). Male hybrids from the two species are sterile but females are fertile and may mate with males from either of the species. Although male offspring from a female hybrid are likely to be infertile as well (Morris, 1965).

In the U.S., it may be possible to raise C. chinchilla in captivity. Though most efforts to date have failed. Most of the chinchillas in captivity in South America are C. chinchilla (Morris, 1965).

hi, total newbie

Hi, I am total newbie, I have just acquired a female chinchilla. she is wonderful. I love her to bits

Curious or scared luna

I just got a 1 year old hedgehog a couple weeks ago, she was seemingly not taken care of by her previous owners as her ears are tattered by mites, the breeder did sell her to me though as she is still friendly, although I do have one concern. Whenever I take Luna out of her cage she is in a constant running frenzy, she looks like she's running around trying to find a place to hide (she often chooses a pant leg or couch) I'm wondering if she's trying to hide from me or if she just needs more exercise. She has a wheel in her cage but she doesn't use it and is constantly in her hut, I'm also worried she's to scares to leave her hut to even eat or drink because it doesn't seem as if she does much of that. We haven't been bonded yet, but I try taking her out of her cage once or twice a day but she just won't calm down

Hammock question

Hello, I am new and have been looking to purchase a hammock or sling thing. My question is : some have metal grommets, some have fabric loops, are there unsafe metals or fabrics for chinchilla's? I have seen brass grommets and unspecified metal

Dried herbs as treats?

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering what your opinion is about certain herbs for chinchillas! Chamomile, lavender, hibiscus, peppermint, and other tea/potpourri herbs seem like they would have therapeutic qualities to them (they certainly do for humans) and I was wondering if they are safe for chins and in what quantity?

Also I've heard that adding certain things like this to their hay manger would be good as well because it would support foraging. Is this true? And/or would a little bowl, separate from their pellet bowl, be good to put these in mixed together as a treat?

Let me know your thoughts!

~Brian

Hidey houses and activity centers

Hello, I just joined. We have two chinchillas. Chloe is 1.5 yrs and Sophie is 3 months. We've had Sophie a little over a month and Chloe two months. I'm having trouble finding instructions on how to make your own hidey house or activity center and was hoping that some people here could be of some help!

Male chinchilla anatomy

Hello,

I was noticing that my guys have something sticking out, I think it is their foreskin or something else and not their penis.. but just want to check that this is normal and what part of the anatomy I am seeing!

I have included a pic of what I see if they lean forward, more on their front feet.
