I have a Custom made chinchilla cage for sale in MA!

Hi guys,

I know this isn't a selling app or anything but I have a really nice custom made wooden chinchilla cage for sale, and I thought the best place to get a good owner for it would be here.

It measures 42.5 by 19 by 51. It has wire grids on the top and doors for ventilation. It has a bottom tray that pulls out for easy cleaning.

Looking for around 250 for it. It would come with two 16 inch aluminum wheels, 15 lb of dust, a dust bath, a water bottle, and 25 lb of food. You can take...

Is This Bumblefoot?

My chin that doesn't have surgery coming up for bumblefoot bled from one of his heels onto a ledge 3 days ago. The vet said before this happened that he just had some normal calluses, and he didn't seem to have any abscess either when I checked him out in the past. Only some widening of the heels from bad past ownership. He's never on wire flooring either. He's walking and eating fine. This is the wound now. Is this bumblefoot or did he just scratch his heel? I've been applying Bag Balm...

Hello!

Hello! I am the proud owner of seven chinchillas. Not quite three years ago, I decided to try a new pet and found a standard grey male chinchilla for a good deal, so I jumped on it. I named him Bartholomew after the Flash (sounded like a good chin name to me and I was a bit obsessed with the Flash then), Barry for short. I immediately fell in love with him. After a little while, I decided to double check his gender, just in case. Looking back, I should've checked sooner. His previous owner...

Hello!

Sick chinchilla. Could really use some advice.

I got my chinchilla from a breeder back on April 17th. He was born on February 13th. Everything was great at first except for he has never drank much water. A couple weeks ago I noticed that he stopped drinking almost entirely and his poop started to get small and then he stopped pooping almost entirely. He went to the vet that day and they gave me critical care and said they didn't really know what was going on. Vet said to give him 10 ml a day I've been giving him about 12. 6 in the...

New Playroom?

My SO and I are purchasing a house soon and would like to convert one of the bedrooms into our chins bedroom/playroom. Do you guys have any advice or ideas on how to set this up? Is there anything in particular I should know about setting up a full room? Any information would be appreciated from safety tips to what you guys like to have out during playtime!
Also, what do you think about shelves on the walls? Safe or not?

Um, I love my chin so here are photos of him

I adopted Mr. B last December and it's been such a good decision for me! After not having had a pet since I moved away from home (10+ years) its so nice to have another critter around now. :) Especially now that I'm stuck working from home all day (hope I don't make too much noise for him during the day) 😅
He's such a good natured chin too! Not a fan of being held much but he doesn't bite and is pretty easy going. I hope I can get him a buddy some day when I live in a bigger place...

Making new shelves for cage: help!

Hey guys! Today we got our first ferret nation cage for our chins. It was pre-owned by my niece and we got it for free from her. We cleaned it three times thoroughly, and then started construction on it to make it "chin-safe" and "chin-proof" because my chins are EXTREMELY good at escaping 😂
I have one homemade shelf and a set of 4 homemade climbing pegs, and one of the original ferret nation plastic shelves (that we're going to cover in anti-pill fleece.
We made a false bottom out of wood...

How many crushed rose hips?

I received crushed rose hips today from Quality Cage Crafters. I know chinchillas can have up to one rose hip a day but how do I measure crushed rose hips?

Blocked tear duct

Hi all,
My chinchilla Walt has had a weeping eye since I got him. His vet treated him with two types of eye drops and it did not seem to clear up. The vet said he possibly has a blocked tear duct. Is this something a chin can suffer with?
Walt is due a check up because he unfortunately had a bad case of ringworm which I think has finally cleared up now after nearly 5 months.
Has anyone any experience with this issue?

Chinchilla vet

How often should a chinchilla be seen at a vet?

Is it necessary to get a chinchilla neutered if you don’t have another sex and don’t plan on getting one??

Does anyone know of a vet in Michigan near warren that they can recommend?

Just a cute picture.

I had to be very careful to get this. 6248259E-D70C-48EE-97D7-BD974D4DBE69.jpeg

Penis prolapses again after removing hair ring

Our chinchilla had a prolapse issue so we brought him to the hospital. The vet removed a "tiny little" hair ring (which we we unable to find by ourselves) from our chinchilla and immediately his penis retracted successfully. However, one day later, his penis came out again and it still will not retract. What can be the possible cause? What should we do now? Our chinchilla seems to eat, drink and behave normally.

My friend's chinchilla has diarrhea please help!

Okay so, my friend is not a part of this forum but she asked me a question about her chin since im the only person she knows personally who owns chinchillas.

Here is the problem. Her chin developed diarrhea today pretty bad.
She accidentally bought and fed him the wrong food at the store. She bought oxbow for hamsters, (it was right next to the chin food. Just grabbed the wrong bag).
He ate it for three days (1/4 cup each day, plus his regular alfalfa hay) and now has diarrhea. Hes been...

Surprise babies please help

I was given a female chinchilla almost 2 months ago. I woke up yesterday to 3 kits in her cage. She did very well giving birth. The kits were 45g, 43g, and 42g at a day old. I didn't know that she was pregnant so I didn't prepare or give her anything extra for nutrition. The kits keep fighting over her nipples and I don't know what to do or if I can help by supplementing something to make sure they are all eating right. Also what can i give momma to help her with more energy or anything...

Chinchillas being wet?

Hello all,

Sorry I am posting so much, I have a lot of questions! So I know chinchillas can't get wet, but what exactly does that mean? Should I completely freaked out if their water bottle drips on their heads? What happens if the granite slabs I freeze in the refrigerator for them to sit on in the summer get wet because of condensation? Is that a problem? I recently just moved them into the same cage, and I can't seem figure out how to attach the water bottle low enough for them to drink...

Possible tooth worry, not eating hay/chewing, slow eating/drooling

Will is about 9 years old, and has recently altogether stopped chewing toys and stopped eating hay. He has been eating his regular food, but very slowly, and drools. Eating the occasional raisin is also a slow process, with drooling. He's been more friendly too lately, coming up to the cage for attention when I'm walking by, more comfortable being held, etc. He seems generally happy as far as I can tell, but so did our other chin Jack until he stopped opening his eyes because of ingrown...

Are my Chinchillas sad?

Hello all,

Thank you for all your help with my previous problems. The chins are eating and drinking fine now, and the brownish pee was from a bark toy that I gave one of them.

As you may know, they are not bonded but they have lived next to each other their whole lives in separate cages. These past couple of weeks, since I got them, they had become really close.

But another problem has arisen. They seemed sad all last week when I put them back in their cages after play time, one of them...

ISO adult male in New England (Boston, Massachusetts)

Hi everyone,

It has been a long time since I have posted! I learned everything I need to know from you guys in 2013 as I awaited the birth of my sweet boy! Bovril is 7 now and so sweet and mild-mannered.

While I think Bovril does fine on his own and shows no signs of stress or depression, I feel like i at least owe him the chance to find a bond, especially since I've seen how much bonding has improved the lives of my two formerly-single bunnies. Of course, there's always a risk that they...

Chin bedding mistake

So we realized the past week our chins bedding has been plain pine not KD mistake order from amazon. Now she seems to be not eating well and sneezing some. I swapped out the bedding for a fleece blanket until I can run to the pet store for aspen (45 min drive). Will she recover now that we have fixed the issue? I have called our vet locally but I would need to travel even farther for a small animal vet (90 mins). She is about 12 years old. Thanks

is basswood safe?

I have been scouring the forum's various safe wood lists and threads and haven't found a concrete confirmation on whether or not basswood is safe. Anyone have any knowledge or experience with this particular wood? I have a few blocks that were intended to be carved but are now sitting unused

Painting wooden accessories safely??

Aloha kakahiaka!

So I've been busy reading posts on here, garnering and filing away any useful information I might need in the future. Back in January, someone posted this picture of a "hut" that's been painted and a discussion followed about safe ways for coloring handmade stuff for chins. Neither of the 2 options I've been planning to use were mentioned so I wanted to open this discussion again. First, the hut, currently sold through PetSmart's...

TV?

I have a single chin and I've read that it's really helpful for them to have a TV so that they're not all by themselves with nothing to do at night. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I play with Mr. B at the very least, every other night. Usually try to play with him ever night for about 45 min or more, and interact with him. He has a wheel and a chew toys/sticks in his cage too. But I do wonder if he's lonely and if having a TV would help!

I'd like to eventually get another chin...

Quarentine cage redo!

I decided to upgrade my chins from plastic shelves lined with fleece to a fully wooden cage. Was not cheap or particularly easy, but I love how it turned out and knowing they're safe makes it all worth it, my standard grey learnt how to unpick stitches which helped boost my decision along!!! I didn't have a before picture, but the socond one gives you an idea :) safe to say they love it too, much more levels to bounce around on

Urine on chinchillas fur

Hello everyone!

Pluto has been with me for a little over 3 months and he has been doing amazing! Except for one single bad habit he seems to have picked up in the last couple of weeks.. Lately for play time, he comes out of the cage and within a few minutes will urinate on the hardwood floor, which is fine for now... but then he almost immediately rolls around in the puddle. He does this atleast 70% of the times he pees while outside the cage. He gets a dust bath about 3 or 4 times a week...

Brownish pee?

My chinchilla happened to pee on a tupperware container today and I saw that the color was very brownish. Is this something to be concerned about? This is the only time I really seen her pee, she's been drinking water and eating so I'm not concerned about if she's peeing. I just don't know if all her pee has been brownish. I don't know if this means she's sick or something, please help me out!

When your chin has taken over your living space :P

This is the dining nook in my apt. Lately it's become Mr. B's playground!
IMG_7231.jpg
He loves the space and does so many popcorns when it's playtime! I think it's because he gets to be underneath the table and benches, makes him feel safe. Sometimes he'll jump onto the benches and table top, but quickly goes back underneath. He's not really a good jumper so its fun watching him figure out how to get up/down. ^_^ I've had to tape...

Quarantine and introduction questions

So my girl recently got spayed due to an infection and lost her lifelong cage-mate 2 months ago. We're ready to get her a new cage-mate.

So I have quarantining questions:

1. Is it ok if the quarantine cage is smaller then ideal? About 100x70 or is that too cruel?

2. How far away do the need to be in quarantine? My apartment is small and my girl free roams a lot so it's hard to find a place she won't get to. Does quarantining mean they can't even be next to each other or is just separate...

Dental Disease - What can be done? Teeth Removal Possible? (Xray pictures enclosed)

My chin for the past 6 months or so has been battling issues with her right eye. It went from an abcess (that we drained for a month) on the top of the eye, to a bulging eye (that got better for a short time), to a corneal ulcer that is also bulging her eye currently. Her ulcer now after about 1.5 weeks finally seems to be a tiny bit better, but her eye still looks inflamed and red.

Initially our first vet advised us that after all this, it was time to consider removing the eye. The vet up...

I don't think my chinchilla is drinking/eating!! I need help!!

Hello all,

On Wednesday I got two chinchillas, I am a first-time owner. I am stressing out because I don't think my chinchillas are eating and drinking!

I've seen one of them, Nova, drink from her water bottle once, and I've occasionally seen her eat her hay. I offered her pellets once and she ate one or two. My other one, Nyx, has also eaten a bit of hay but I have never seen her drink or eat her pellets.

Here's some more context to help you understand the situation:

They are not a...

Ferret nation two story. Free to good rescue group.

I have a used two story ferret nation. It needs a new wheel and shows some signs of age. My chinchillas passed away from old age.
I’ll give it to a good verified rescue in the Philadelphia area. Pick up only.

Ferret nation cage is wobbly?!?

Has anyone seen their cage become wobbly after about a year (even when my chins are just using their chin spins it wobbles like crazy!!!) and decided to remove the wheels or legs?
or is there another solution to this problem?
Thank you!

Where can I get tile cut?

I have tile for Sage’s cage. Lowe’s does not cut tile anymore, they even got rid of their tile cutter. I don’t really want to get a wet saw for three pieces of tile. I also have never used one. Where should I get it cut?

New female chinchilla

Hi everyone. I have a young male chinchilla about 7 and a half months old. I'd like to take a friend to keep him company. Now I would have the opportunity to take a three year old female who has already lived in a group. In my house I have room to keep two large cages close together and in the future I will sterilize my male. I have read, however, that it is a source of stress for the male to have a female close to him without being able to reach her. This is true? Or will it still be a...
