A bonded pair playing together - what does it look like?

I was just wondering if people who have happily bonded pairs could share what their playtimes with both their chins together looks like? I am sure every chin is different so it varies quite a bit, but I'm just trying to get a good idea of what is normal/not normal as my chins (and I) are still getting the hang of playtime.

From what I understand chinchillas are herd animals and live in social groups. So what does 'playing' with another chinchilla consist of? I know the warning signs of too much chasing, fur pulling, and biting; but do 2 chinchillas ever playfully chase and stand on their hind legs sort of like how dogs might? Or does 'playing' really only include the nose-touching, grooming, and snoozing together?

We had a playtime this evening and they were extremely excited and hyper. Both seemed to be having a very good time - lots of wall surfing and the more outgoing one was popcorning. But towards the end there was some chasing, a bit of humping, and lots of peeping noises. They didn't sound like aggressive noises - definitely not kacking or barking. Just to be safe, I got one of them back into his carrier. The other one kept poking his noise into the carrier through the bars. They nose-touched, and kept on peeping to each other. Are they just excitedly chatting?

I just want to get a sense of how happily bonded chinchillas play together. Any stories would be appreciated!

Angry Rescue Chin

Hi! I just recently rescued two new chinchillas from someone who wasn't keeping up with their care. I'm really not sure the living situation of these chinchillas because they've bounced around temporary homes when I got them. All I know is that ther living situation was bad, there were 10 other chinchillas they lived with that found new homes also. The two I rescued are both extremely shy females, a beige and a grayish black. Upon originally getting them, they were extremely frightened, did not want to be handled, looked like they hadn't had dust baths in ages and the gray one is still extremely matted.

It's been a couple weeks now, they live in their own cool bedroom with a nice tall cage. I keep them in their own bedroom as my dog is obsessed with chinchillas and would gladly terrorize them all day.

Anyway, on to the point, the beige chinchilla is extremely skittish, but very friendly and I think we're starting to bond a bit. The gray/black chinchilla, who is much heavier and I'm assuming is pregnant, is extremely mean. I've owned chinchillas before and have never had to deal with a mean one like her. She hates when I open the cage, when I stick my hand in the cage, if I try to touch her, if I try and fix one of the levels, even if I'm just watching from the outside and not even moving towards the cage, she kacks at me and chatters her teeth. I'm not sure if it's because she might be pregnant or she just doesnt enjoy my presence, but she is extremely moody. She'll even direct her anger to the beige chinchilla and start kacking and barking at her. She's accepted sunflower seeds from my hand before, but still gotten mad right after. I'm not sure how to deal with this behavior. I often will leave the cage door open and let her come out to run around the room since there's no furniture, but when I try to get her back in the cage she obviously doesnt want it and I don't want to make her more stressed out. I would hate to not be able to let her come out it I can't even touch her to get her back in. And I'll never be able to get those mats out if she doesn't allow me to touch her. Does anyone have any advice? And I apologize for the lengthy story!

Wheel question

I bought a wheel for my chin about a month ago and he won't use it. It's huge, 15 inches in diameter I believe. Do some chins just not like to run on wheels? He often poops in it but he's never figured out how to use it. Perhaps it's because I let him run around his chin proof room for an hour each evening? I just wonder if it's worth keeping in there if he doesn't use it or if I should remove it and just add another perch.

New Chin

I work at a pet store. And when this chinchilla arrived I fell in love with him. He was so friendly, would let anyone pet him, and was always scratching at the glass when you walked by because he wanted pets. I would put my hands in the cage and he would jump in and run up my arm and perch on my shoulder. Him and I became buds and I didn't want anyone else to have him so I brought him home. He has a huge cage with lots of chew toys and hay and food and water and places to hide. When I got him home and before I got him out of the little box he started making this crazy cry/screaming sound and so I got him out and put him in the cage. He spent the whole first night in the corner periodically making that same sound and would only stop if i sang to him. I was gone all day the next day and could tell that he had been out exploring, but as soon as I came in the room he went right back in that corner. The second night he didn't scream as much, but did close to 5 am. He has finally let me pet him but he still seems so scared. He doesn't even seem like the same chinchilla I played with at the store every day. I'm getting sad because he seems sad and I just want to make him happy. Any thoughts ?

Chin consistently sleeping on hand

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with a chin sleeping on top of your hand?

One of my chins has become super cuddly over the past 3 weeks. He has really trained my partner and me to be his personal pillow while he naps for half an hour or so. He'll go over to one specific shelf, and if either one of us puts our hand in he'll push it down with his paws, crawl on top of it, settle down, chirp and usually fall asleep for a while. He's been doing this consistently every night. He doesn't like the palms (too hot and oily, I'm guessing?), but he seems to find resting on the backs of our hands comfortable. His brother is less snuggly in general. But he will come over and try to groom his brother, or chew on something right next to us, just to be close. It's very, very sweet. Is this them accepting us as part of their herd?

People seem to say that if a chin is acting 'snuggly' you should be wary that something might be wrong with them... so I'm just checking if this is completely unusual behavior. He is eating, drinking, pooping, and peeing as usual. Weight is consistent.

I am also wary of him getting too hot if he's resting on my hand. I keep an eye on his ears, and the temp is usually around 65F degrees. My hands are usually freezing anyway; I feel like he's the one warming me up.

I feel like we've been bonding well lately largely due to playtime. The last time he was out for a run, he let me scratch his tummy and under his chin for minutes on end, and then kept returning to the same spot to get more. He just stared at me with a big doofy smile; it was adorable.

I'm just hoping that this is him growing to like/accept us more, and there isn't something wrong...

Missing Hair

So my chin was playing tonight and I always let her run around my room, it is chin proof or so I thought it was. When she jumped back into cage tonight, I notice she has lost a huge patch of hair on her nose/ between her eyes. The skin has no cuts on on it and she is acting like her normal self. I'm not sure how it happened or why.

Any recommendations on what I should do for her would be great!!

Newbie questions

I just picked up my first new chinchillas tonight, I've been doing as much reading as I can and still have a few questions, I'm sorry if they are stupid or obvious questions.

First, after moving the chins to a new house I know it's best to let the settle in before play time or too much interactions, but should I still offer dust baths inside their cage in the mean time?

Second question, the cage that I got them in has just a plastic tray on the bottom (I replaced it with a sheet of melamine) but at the moment there is no lip or guard around it. As far as I know they have always been using just fleece on the bottom with no bedding, should I continue with just the fleece, or see if they would use a litter pan with bedding? I could even build something with a guard on it, just don't want to build something if it's not going to work. What has everyone else had success with?

Again sorry for the possibly stupid questions. You guys are all amazing for helping us newbs :):)

Litter pan/box idea for chin that kicks out shavings in the pan

Hi. In the past few days, I noticed that more than half of the shavings that I put in my chin's litter box (pyrex baking dish) were out on the fleece floor every morning when I got up to clean her cage. She must had kicked the shavings out during the night. This makes the cage really messy and hard to clean. I would really appreciate if someone could provide ideas for litter pan/box that would prevent this from happening or any ways to discourage this behavior. Thanks!

Messed up, help please moderators!

I just tried posting about my chinchilla in the hedgehog health and hygiene forum! Could a moderator please message me back with the text I had in that post, so I can post it in the proper forum? I spent a little while writing it, and it is important. Thank you so much.

Bo is dozing off in unusual places... and other questions

My 6 month male chin, Bo, has been falling asleep near the door of his habitat, rather than in his hut, like he has for the 3 months I've had him. This behavior started maybe 3 days ago. I realized he had been eating his bedding (Kaytee Clean&Cozy) and switched him to pine shavings. He also has been drinking much less water than is normal for him. I can't currently afford to take him to a vet, but I was wondering what could cause this change in where he wants to sleep? I bring him out to play quite often, he has a puppy pen where he loves to run around. I am wondering if he is sleeping by the door to be closer to me, but he has slept in his hut because it is dark and cool since I got him. Also, he occasionally gets little crusty bits in his fur because I give him compressed timothy hay cubes and he goes to TOWN. The resulting saliva/hay can give him little tangle spots that stay around after his dust baths. I was wondering if it would be safe to use a cushion slicker brush on him, to be gentle on the tangles. I would love any advice that anyone has to offer!!! I want to give my baby the absolute best. Thank you (:

New chinchilla owner

Hello! New chin owner as of this past December, and I love him to death. He's been a great companion. I joined the forum mainly to post a health question which I'll put in its appropriate topic area.

Esper is a male chinchilla about 8 or 9 months old now. I'll probably post some pictures when I'm home and this tread is approved!

Chin not eating and breathing very fast

I have an eleven year old chinchilla who has gone off her food completely when she used to eat like a horse. We took her to the vet on Friday who percribed baytril and an anti inflammatory. We have been hand feeding her critical care and water, she is still on her feet but we are so worried and not sure what is wrong with her. Does anyone have any suggestions about what could possibly be the problet? The vet said her teeth were fine, and she doesn't seem to have any obvious pain. She has also lost weight because she isn't eating what she usual does.

New Chin on Antibiotics

I'm a new chin owner so I'm already easily spooked but here's my story.

Two weeks ago my chin, Esper, got a toe stuck in a part of his cage (which has now been sealed to prevent further accidents) but he tore the nail badly and it bled a bit. I set up an appointment the next day, but the earliest I could get out of work for a visit was a week later. So last Tuesday I brought him in and other than a little infection he was in great health so I was prescribed an antibiotic (which I will update when I get back home to check).

He hates taking it and is now very afraid of me holding him or being out of his cage, which I expected, but he seems to be eating and drinking very little and I'm really concerned about it. His toe is less inflamed but still red and he's supposed to take it for another 10 days but I'm worried if he stops eating he'll be worse off than if the infection is left alone.

He's only about 8 months old but I love him dearly and just want to do right for him. I already browsed the forum and will be cleaning up the sticky medicine residue on his fur from struggling to avoid the medicine tonight with baby wipes and such.

Uneven incisors

Well...the thing ive been fearing has reared its ugly head. I rushed him to emergency when he stopped eating all of a sudden last wknd and his poops got smaller and smaller. They found nothing. I fed him 2 days on cc but discontinued because he seemed on the upswing and i wanted him to eat himself. Hes eating a little bit more but his poops are varying in size. Still kind of small and skinny. But hes eating more for sure.

I took him for a recheck today and his regular vet found that his incisors are uneven on the bottom. He was in 3 weeks ago from a recovering tail wound and they said his teeth were fine. It's slanted a bit or one tooth is longer. We are trying to schedule a CT scan in the coming weeks to check his molars. What could cause this? He has fresh hay and things to chew on. Pumice stones. Loofahs. Sticks. Hes 4 and hasnt ever had issues with teeth. Can people share their similar experiences? Or just support. I feel like ive done something incorrectly. Its just such a blow to me because hes never had problems ans i know how teeth problems are often chronic. It just makes me feel so hooekess expecially compounded with the fact that hes still so young.

Dustbathes... too many?

First off, I'd just like to ask everyone before I post this to not let this question change your view/opinion on me, while I am knowledgeable about chinchillas, I'm always learning every day.
My chinchilla loves playtime, possibly a little too much. It is always a difficulty getting him back in, as I'm sure it is with the majority of other owners too. I have tried many different ways to get him to go back in his cage, and the way I have had the most success with is simply to place his bath house on the floor and he will hop in and I will cover the exit so he doesn't jump out and place it back in his cage. This option has never backfired. However, he will not go into the house if there is no dust in there. I know that the limit on dustbathes are three a week.
So, my question is, If I were to sprinkle a tiny tiny bit of dust into the house, and he were to roll around in that mini portion everyday for a minute, would that cause his fur to dry up at all? From what I've observed, it has not and he has not shown any symptoms such as constantly scratching himself or has had irritated eyes/nose.
Thank you! :)

Male Chinchilla constantly mounting another male

Hello

My wife and I bought our first chinchilla, Teemo (right around a year old male), last April. He seemed like he really wanted a friend (making the call sound a lot) so we recently decided to get a second chinchilla, Moss (just under a year old male), about 2 weeks ago.

We had them in separate cages next to each other for the first week letting them out to play separately. During the second week we started letting them run around together. The seemed to be getting along and would sit next to each other and groom each other running around chirping and pop corning. Teemo would mount him occasionally(I read this is a sign of dominance), the first time he was very aggressive (not attacking but just constantly trying to) about it so we separated them. The next day Teemo backed off a bit and they got along fine.

Today, I put them into the same cage since they seemed to be getting along well. They were fine for a couple hours then Teemo started swishing his tail and constantly mounting Moss again. Moss got aggravated and barked and nipped at Teemo but Teemo wouldn't back off. I let them out of the cage and they calmed down for 30 min or so but then Teemo wouldn't leave Moss alone and they got in a bit of a tussle (some fur lost but no blood). I put them back into separate cages.

Is it just too soon for them to be in the same cage? is there anything we can do to get Teemo to stop constantly mounting Moss? They both seem to like each other most of the time and haven't really fought but Teemo just seems to bug Moss until he tells Teemo to back off.

Too much Dust bath ? Help!

My three year old chinchilla Chinchi recently started breathing funny like a bit of sneezing and a squeaky breathing at first. I also noticed he's not barking as loud as before (he's a very vocal chinchilla). I was playing with him early in the morning and he kept getting to his dust bath on top of his cage. A couple hours past and i noticed the breathing, we have a vet appointment scheduled monday (today is friday). Am i worrying too much ? could it have been too much dust ? or a respiratory infection ?
* He is eating , drinking water, wants to play, and pooping normaly.

Do chins have any use for buckwheat?

My mother had a relatively short lived project preoccupations for making buckwheat pillows for people that was supposed to be better for neck alignment or something but she ran out of beneficiaries to benefit from them long before she ran out of a rather large sack of buckwheat. I suppose it would make a fine cat bed or two, maybe one for the dog. But that means she'd have to stay in craft mode anyway, and it would still be good to know if it was toxic to the critters so that any projects that did get completed would be kept well away from where it might get nibbled on. Given the draft in this room at the moment, I might stuff some tights with it andand cram those under the doors as draft blockers, but that still puts them in potential position to be gnawed also ....

It is all properly pesticide free and organic an all that, as it was intended for people to be resting their faces on it, and for kids to have toys made of it and putting itn their mouths and breathing it in all night. Since it is a grain she wondered if maybe the chins could find some value in it, either as food or litter perhaps?

It's so weird what might end up being toxic, so no chances will be taken unless we know for sure its okay for them. and I never heard any mention of buckwheat at all. I didn't even really know where to look other than google and this place is right at the top of the list of results.

Anyone know if its safe for chins and if so what they might use it for? And if not, anyone have any other creative ideas what do with a duffel full of buckwheat?

Cheers!

Hello :)

Hello everyone,
I'm Minnow! I recently became a parent of a little chinchilla named Milo. I have done a lot of research but I know there's still a lot to learn about chinchillas. I hope that by joining I may be able to find out some more about the proper care of my little guy and make some friends along the way. I have owned small animals all my life but never a chinchilla before. If you have any tips for a new chin parent, feel free to let me know! All information is welcome :)

Compressed Hay But Not Cubes?

Soo...I need a little advice. I have a chinchilla whose molars are being trimmed once a year. The vet suggested I get hay cubes in a different shape so she would have to use those back teeth more. She's never eaten loose hay so we give her hay cubes instead. She has wood shelves and hanging toys she chews on but she's never been a BIG chewer. I would much rather her wear them down naturally than spend ~$200-$400 at the vet every year.

Do hay cubes come in any shapes other than cubes? Maybe stars, triangles, etc? Have you seen these sold anywhere or know of someone that makes them? I have not found anything in my internet searches :banghead:. I would prefer for it to be timothy hay because she's on alfalfa pellets. Any other suggestions are welcomed too!! Thank you.

Hello

Hi there. I'm AfanenKittyn (Feel free to call me Afa of Kitty as well). I should put this as my daughter has 2 chinchillas, so I'm here to read, learn and ask questions if needed. I tend to be a lurker for the most part, trying to learn as much as I can. I'll speak up if I feel that I have something to contribute. It will be very nice to meet everyone.

Long eye/stasis problem

I'm sorry this will probably be long, but thank you to those of you who read it and provide your thoughts. I'm desperate to save my little guy.

Around the beginning of January I started noticing a wet ring around Shiro's (5-year-old white male) right eye. At first I didn't think anything of it and thought it would go away. After a couple of weeks, I realized it was a persistent problem. I took him to my exotic vet who is very well-respected and experienced.

I gave Shiro antibiotic eye drops for five days as prescribed, but that didn't solve the wetness around his eye. A few days after ending that treatment, I noticed a little white discharge from the eye. That's when I talked to my vet again and he prescribed Baytril for 10 days. As you may have guessed, this is when the main disaster started.

I gave him the Baytril for 10 days (possibly 11), and he hated it. Around the middle of that period, he stopped running on the flying saucer wheel and started to just sit in the cage like he was feeling ill. The Baytril was likely the cause. After I finished the Baytril, I told the vet Shiro was acting like he didn't feel well. At this point he still appeared to be pooping ok in the vet's opinion when I took him in. I started him on Bene-bac around this time.

This vet saw the lingering wetness/matting around his eye and said he was "ok with it" at that point. It wasn't very severe, so I guess he thought it wouldn't be a problem. But he referred me to a vet farther away who is even more of an expert and the leading exotic vet in the area. My regular vet at first wanted to refer me there to get a CT scan to check his teeth, but we still have not done that.

I took Shiro to the other vet, and he did the iodine eye test, x-ray, and a bacterial culture for the eye. The teeth on the x-ray looked fine to him, and after mentioning the suggestion of a CT scan, he said he didn't think it was necessary/worth it at this point. The bacterial culture showed staph, strep, and one other bacteria in his eye.

Shiro ended up staying at that vet office for about a week. They started him on eye ointment, ranitidine, and syringe feeding. His poops weren't good by the time he got to this vet. After about a week there, his poops were improving some to the half-size poop, but still not a normal chin amount.

After bringing him home, I continued that eye ointment (they had stopped it for a couple days before finding out he had staph), ranitidine, and feedings. He has been back with me for about a week and a half now, I believe. I talked to the vet again last Friday, and I stopped the eye ointment then and went to the ranitidine once a day. I increased syringe feeding from twice to three times a day because his poops were still not normal.

On Tuesday, I noticed he had fewer but really soft poop, so I talked to the vet again. He said the soft poop could be a good sign for his gut in this case. Tuesday morning was the last dose of ranitidine he's had, and he is still pooping. His poop is currently still somewhat soft, but it's more than yesterday. He has that plumper, half-size poop still, which is the majority of the type of poop he's had since I've had him back.

After stopping the eye ointment last Friday, I noticed some white discharge again from his eye, so the vet told me to do the ointment again for maybe three more days in case it's still the staph. He's not had three doses. From all the ointment he's had, the entire right side of his face is matted and grayish. He hates everything about the ointment, and I wonder if it could be irritating his eye as much as killing the bacteria.

I should mention Shiro lives with another male chin who is 11 years old. They fought a little when he came back, but they seem to be back to being buddies.

I've tried timothy, orchard grass, and botanical hay from Oxbow so far. Shiro seems to like the botanical best. Throughout this whole process, I've seen him continue to munch on it, but being in with the other chin, I'm not sure how much he's eating. Sometimes he seems picky and just nibbles on a few stalks and throws them down. I haven't seen him eat any pellets since I've had him back, but I can't be sure he's not. I tried the Oxbow digestive health tablets on him, and he loved it the first day, but now he's reluctant to eat them.

When he's in his cage, he still sits around more than a normal chin and hasn't been running on his wheel at all. He squints his right eye and acts like he's uncomfortable. However, when I take him out for his syringe feedings, I let him run around the bathroom afterwards. He runs, jumps, skips off my back onto the counter, hops in the tub, and behaves pretty much normally there. I think he gets tired quicker than my healthy chin, but it amazes me the acrobatics he pulls off even with everything he's been going through. It makes me not want to give up on him.

A few strange things that are may or may not be unrelated:

He likes cat food... I have to hide the kibble in the bathroom when he's in there otherwise he runs over and chows down. He seems to be peeing a lot in the last few days. In the bathroom, I've seen him pee up to five times in an hour or so. Also, he's been doing it less in the past few days, but during this ordeal he was constantly sitting on a wooden ledge/shelf in the cage and holding his entire head over the side for the maybe the majority of the day. I wonder if it made him feel better. In the past few days, I haven't seen it as much, and I've even seen him sprawling on his side, which makes me hope he might be more comfortable--enough to spread out.

Do you think his poops could still go back to normal so he can be healthy again? They are just not the long cigar shape of my other chin. Especially with my syringe feeding, he seems to be getting enough food/liquids, but he still doesn't have the proper energy/activity level in the cage.

What are your thoughts? Do you think there is still hope for my baby? Is his GI tract likely damaged? I'm calling the vet again tomorrow to give an update.

I can't lose this little guy. I lost my rabbit in October (after a similar stasis issue--granted she was 13-14), and I've been going through a very hard time in my life. I'm living in a bad situation, and trying to find a new place to rent, but I've put that on hold because Shiro is my priority. I'm so desperate to save him.

Treats for chinchilla

Hey guys I want to give my chin some more treats when he does something good. Right now I don't have any for him, occasionally I will give him one plain cheerio and he loves them but I don't want him getting chunky. Any recommendations for snacks for them to have that won't make him gain too much weight but also something that he would like? I used to give him dried blueberries and he loved them, are they okay to keep giving or is there something better that you can recommend?

Thanks!

House for chinchilla

Hello,

I used to have a wood house for my chin that he LOVED but he chewed the thing apart. This was the one I had gotten for him: http://ift.tt/2mdKAZl
Can someone recommend a good one that is durable but not too expensive? Right now he has a little rug in his cage that he loves to go underneath and have it cover him like a blanket but he has been peeing on it a lot lately (still goes in his litter pan but now on the rug too) and it's making his cage smell. I would like to get rid of that since I'm cleaning it so often and get him another house.

Thanks!

Really Scared -- Think we are losing one

We took our 7 year old girl Chi Chi to the vet yesterday when we noticed she was having trouble with her back legs. The good news no broken bones or no constipation/blockage.

The bad news, she has a degenerating disk in her spine. Only one. So we are feeding her Critical Care and the vet prescribed to her Meloxicam. It's only day two, so I am trying to be optimistic. But I am also really scared. Her movement is a struggle, she steers with her front paws and is dragging her hindquarters. And she does grind her teeth from time to time.

Now the vet didn't see anything to think she shouldn't recover, but like I say I am scared because her movement does seem so hard for her now. And she has began to grind her teeth a bit. Has anyone had a similar experience? Does anyone know how long for the meds to bring some relief?

Chinchilla eyesight

So, I am wondering how well chinchillas can see?

There was a thread here that I found (it was how I found the forum in fact) which had an article from 1949 talking about chinchilla eyesight. However, I was wondering if anyone knew of more recent studies of their visual acuity, whether they can see in any colours, etc.

Our chinchillas are happy housepets, but my wife is thinking of seeing whether they can be trained to react to visual cues, and the first step is figuring out whether they even can see the cues!

Proud owner of new Chinchilla :) Questions!

Hello. I'm typing this on my phone so please forgive any typos. I've been wanting a Chinchilla for years and reading this website off and on for about a year now. Thinking I was pretty prepared, mt husband got me mt first Chin for valentine's day along with a massive cage and accessories. I picked the Chin out from the pet store. (Please don't judge). I held 3 of them and this one had the greatest personality, just came right to me and let me hold him and pet him. Whenever the door was opened he didn't run away like the others but would come right to the door and hop out.
More reading since I got my chin (3 days ago) has convinced me I must have gotten pretty lucky. There was no initial period of having him warm up to me, from the first day he jumped on my hand right of the cage. He let's my daughters (both teenagers) hold him as well as my husband. Not for long periods of time but at least 5-10min. I sit on the bathroom floor with him twice a day and let him run around and he crawls all over me, popcorns and takes a dust bath.
But all that said, I do have some questions. First of all, do you think he's pretty young to be so warmed up to me already? They couldn't tell me how old he was at the store. He's on the smaller side so I'm wondering if he's young and that's why. Have you all heard of chins doing this?
Second, how much time does he need? Everywhere says spend lots of time with him, but what does that mean? I work nights 3 nights a week, hubby works days. If I take him out in the evening for 30min before work, then in the am when I get home for about an hour, then on days off make it longer in the evening, is that good? I spent about 2 hours in the bathroom with him tonight. I'd sat on the floor and was trying to do paperwork but he kept coming up to chew on my papers and folders so I had to just give up on that lol. Is there such a thing as too much time? By the way, he doesn't seem to really be nocturnal much either. I was good with the nocturnal part because I'm nocturnal also lol, but he seems less nocturnal than me! Like right now, he's sleeping and has been for the past few hours. It's almost 4am.
Third question, we got him this cute little hanging fleece house with holes in it to climb and hide in. 2 parts to this question. 1, he just goes in it to pee. Why is he peeing in the fleece house and how do I get him to pee in the littER box I set up in the cage? 2. He always sleeps out in the open. He also has a wooden house he can go into and a hammock and pretty much just sleeps out in the middle if the cage floor (covered in fleece) or at the end of one of the ramps. Is that weird? Why doesn't he like his houses?

Thanks in advance for the help. I've been googling to try to find this info for hours and couldn't come up with anything.
P.S. we also got him one of those little purse pet carrier type things. He doesn't seem to mind it, but how can I tell if he likes it? I've only taken him out in it once for about 20min.

Introduction

My wife and I have two chinchillas, four rabbits, two rats, and a gerbil. All are of course house pets.

Our chinchillas came from the Erie County SPCA, where we adopted them a couple of years ago as a pair.

I am a mathematician. My wife is currently studying comparative psychology and animal cognition. In fact, I found this forum while searching for information on the eyesight of chinchillas, as we were trying to see the types of visual learning of which they might be capable.

Chinchilla constipated/ill

I have a year and a half old chinchilla I bred from a resucued pair I got from two different people. The day before yesterday I realized he wasn't acting normal, ie; sluggish when he is normally very active, not accepting treats or affection, and was not producing waste at playtime. I immediately took him to the vet for fear of gastrointestinal stasis. Before he went I ground up pellets and was force feeding him a gruel type mixture that he would only peck at. The vet said there didnt seem to be a blockage, and his bladder was empty. She didnt want to stress him by taking x-rays and sent me home with critical care and a few syringes of stool softner. I have been up for two nights and days syringe feeding him critical care, water and giving him the stool softner every eight hours but to no avail he will not produce droppings. My husbnad went to the store and bought some apple baby food and I gave him some of that as well. Is there anything else I can do? I am so upset.:cry3:

Litter Pan

I need to find a metal litter pan for my chinchilla cage! Does anyone know where to find one? My girls have been doing so well using a plastic one but eventually they will start to chew at it. Help!

Bonding two chins- Next Step

I have two females that I introduced and would like to bond. I've read many posts on this forum regarding the topic but would like to know when I should make my next move and place both chins in the same cage.

So far, I've done the following:

1. Quarantine
2. Cages next to each other
-No biting or scratching at cage bars. One chin seems to look for the other but mostly they ignore each other it seems.
3. Play time in a neutral area
-No chasing, no mounting, no spraying
-They have begun to groom each other. I did hear one of them make a squeaky noise. It didn't seem to be a bark or knack but not a normal "communication" noise either (well in my opinion.. but I also don't speak chin lol).
-They take dust baths together
-They jump in the same carrier to travel to the play area. And actually on accident, the smaller chin entered the other's cage and there was no bad interactions.

What other signs should I be looking for?

Again, when should I make the next move and place both in the same cage? I have a ton of new wooden shelves and toys coming in the mail next week and thought this might be a good time as the smells would be neutral. I don't have a brand new cage so I will have to scrub one down and add the new shelves.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

Female or Male?

Hi Everyone,

I adopted a white mosaic chin off craigslist. I was told Mo was a male. I didn't verify when I picked Mo up but then start to get nervous about hair rings since the owner said she hadn't handle Mo in about 2 years. I took a look and was surprised ... I'm 95% sure Mo is a girl.

I attached a picture can you all help me verify?

Thanks!

Really Scared -- Think we are losing one

We took Chi Chi to the vet, when we noticed she had trouble moving hind legs. He gave her x rays. No broken bones, no constipation. She does have a deteriorating disc between her vertebrae though. We have been giving her Critical Care, and Meloxicam. It's only day 2, but she seems to be in more and more pain. Grinding teeth too, tonight. Moving her hindquarters seems to be a burden, her little legs are moving, but there is more dragging I think.

The good news, the vet didn't see anything yesterday to make him think putting her down was the best option at this time. It was only one disc and she is only 7.

Having said that, seeing her move the way she does really has me scared that she won't recover. But I am trying to be optimistic and thinking that after a week of the Critical Care and medicine she'll bounce back. Any one have a similar experience or have any idea how these things usually go, how long the meds start to make a difference?

How can I get her to let me hold her?

Hi Ya'll,

My sweet baby Ellie, my chinchilla, I have had for about going on three years now. She started out with my aunt and I know was terrorized because my aunt had about five dogs in the house too. So now I have the joy of being able to have her and she has been with me and I have tried to hold her but she absolutely does not like it. IF and I say IF lol I can get a hold of her I have to hold her very close to me or else she would get away. The odd thing is she is totally used to me. I have her so spoiled when I sit in my chair and eat she knows its snack time. I let her run out to get exercise and she will come right close to me where as before she didn't. She nibbles and tastes on my arm and fingers, if I have some fruit snacks in my hand she will put both front paws on my hand while eating, she will come right up to my noise and sniff, and I even tried this thing I saw online to see if she would do it. I read where some chinchillas will take food out your mouth (I know sounds weird lol) but I give her these pretzels from Petsmart that she LOVES and so they are long enough and I just hold it in my teeth and she comes right up and takes it. So my question is, is there something I can still try to maybe get her to let me hold her? Or is it possible maybe she just doesn't like it? I have read that somewhere as well, that some just don't like to be held. :hmm:

Can humans get chins sick?

Does anybody know if humans can pass their illness onto chins? I feel a possible cold coming on and am weary of being around my girls out of fear of getting them sick.

Hello All!

Hello everyone! My name is Lori and I own two 7 year old chinchilla girls who I've had since they were tiny kits. Valentina is a beige and Domino is a white mosaic. Currently thinking about getting a third! They have other furry friends such as two female Guinea Pigs, birds, and 3 dachshunds! I currently work as an veterinary assistant whose hospital mainly sees cats and dogs but when exotics come through, I'm their go to person 🙂. I'm back in school to become a licensed technician. I love this group already and excited to meet everyone! Below are pictures of my girls:

Dental Spurs/X-Rays to Follow

I took both of my chinchillas in for a vet check up and they found small spurs on their molars. As a note, yes I have a female and a male. They do not live together, I will never breed them. Miley was supposed to be a boy, regardless, she was in a bad situation with humans before me and needed help.

Notes on Miley, my 2.5 year old (estimated age) : small dental spurs, worse right lower arcade

Notes on Emerson, my 4 year old male: small molar spurs on lower teeth. Ofloxacin to his left eye twice daily and during the radiographs today they are going to check to rule out tooth roots compression nasolacrimal duct.

----

I did not bring the chins in because I noticed any symptoms of pain or appetite decrease. In fact since the last check up 6 months ago, Miley has actually gained weight, 564g to 635g. I switched to small pet select hay and both of them are demolishing it (in a good way, lots of consumption, much less waste) and both get 2 tablespoons of pellets every day. Miley has been eating less of her pellets since I got the new bag but the timing coincided with a lot of people on the Let's Love Chinchillas group mentioning their chinchillas were also not as eager to eat the pellets. Emerson is still finishing all of his, there is some dust in the bowl but I never experienced anything other than some dust. There has not been an increase in this. He very occasionally grinds/chatters/clicks his teeth, a vet at one point told me that meant he was in pain, but I've also read that they do that to clean food off their teeth and various other reasons. He's been doing it for the last two years maybe more and I've taken him regularly to the vet and I have always mentioned it and they've never found anything to correlate. I know I'm rambling but I figure the more details the better. My main reason for posting is that I am hoping as soon as I get their radiographs that I may be able to post them here and those who know far more than me about reading the x-rays could look them over with me and figure out if he and/or Miley have malo or something else going on. I figured if I put this post out now, those who are informed would keep an eye out this evening when I am able to upload the photos. Hopefully sooner than that though.

I'll post updates as I have them in this thread. Thank you in advance!

Chinchilla with hurt foot

I recently took my chinchilla to the vet because he injured his leg, spraining it, (They prescribed pain killers/anti-inflammatory) and was wondering how to help him with the healing process. Would it be best to put him in a more confined cage without much room to roam to prevent him from prolonging his healing or put him into his main larger cage where he can jump and move a lot?

Royal Persian Angora Chinchillas - Ship from Moscow to Chicago

:hug2: Hi Everyone, I'm in Illinois and I really want to get an angora chinchilla. They are so expensive though, so I went onto Angora Chinchilla Club on FB and have looked around at the adorable chinchillas. One breeder (Natali Litvinova) in Moscow has many for sale and is willing to ship to the USA. She says it starts at $1200 to ship a chinchilla and to ship 3-5 chinchillas makes it more worth the shipping.

I have 2 of her chinchillas that I'm interested in, so I'm looking to see if there are any other people in the Chicago region (since the chins would be shipping to ORD) or St. Louis area (since I live in Springfield & you could pick them up there), that might want a Angora chinchilla(s) and go in with me to share the cost of shipping.

With her permission, I'm sharing her RPA and RPA carriers on this listing.

You can contact her on her FB page if you need more information on the chins http://ift.tt/2kNrqrX

And them PM me if you're interested in going in on them with me. Thanks!

Old chin with fluid in rectum

Hi all,
This evening I was checking on my chinchilla and I noticed his bottom was swollen and wet. He also was acting a little lethargic. I took him to the exotic animal vet who looked him over today and said that the swollen-ness on his bottom was from an accumulation of fluid in the bowel and diarrhea. He also has fluid collecting in his feet, and around his eyes. Clearly my chinchilla is definitely not well. :(

I'm concerned about the vet's suggestion and prognosis. Basically he told me I have two options. 1) Take him to an emergency specialist two hours away for ultrasound, blood work, etc. for a better chance at a diagnosis. My quote is a minimum $2K to bring him in for tests and overnight hospitalization or 2) put him down. Basically, he thinks it's possible that my chin is either experiencing heart failure, organ failure, blood poisoning, tumor or a number of other terminal conditions. I was concerned that he wasn't trying to first rule out some obvious problems that were fixable, before pushing for diagnostics or death, so I asked for an x-ray. The x-ray showed that his heart was slightly enlarged, and his intestines were large and full of gas. There was also a space near the colon that he said "could be fluid, or could be a mass". When I asked if we could treat the GI issue, he seemed to think it wasn't worth it, and 'there is likely something bigger underlying his condition". When I asked point blank if he thought it was time to put him down he said no, and that there were "possible scenarios that were treatable". But he didn't give me an idea of what constitutes 'treatable", since he doesn't think it's a GI issue....I'm not a vet, and I want to trust his advice, but I just confused how this could happen so quickly, and why he wasn't willing to treat what we can see is wrong.

I feel absolutely heart broken over this. I admit it, I do have money saved up but with a newborn and a mountain of my own medical bills from the birth, I don't have 2K to spend on finding out if my chinchilla is terminal. In an ideal world I would, but it's just not possible. I am also not willing to do any invasive surgery because I don't think he would make it anyway. He's 14 years old. If he might die in the hospital, it hurts me to think he would be scared and alone in a strange place away from his brother and his home.

I'm mad at myself because I wasn't more confident at the vet office to ask for a treatment that would at least address the GI issue. From my perspective, I want to make sure that he is comfortable and not in pain. I would rather treat what I can to make him comfortable then go down a diagnostic rabbit hole that may likely lead to a scenario that I can't fix anyway. Aside from the fluid, and mild lethrgy, he is still acting like himself...using the ledges, running on the wheel, eating food, drinking water....he even took a dust bath, although he seemed to need to regain some energy afterward.

He's home now, and he ate a half a serving of Critical Care and I gave him some smithicone. I also called another vet nearby to see if they could give sub-q fluids....the one I went to today wouldn't do it. They haven't gotten back to me yet.

I just want to make him comfortable and happy. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I know this forum isn't a substitute for vet care, but is there any advice you can share? Has alone else experienced this sudden onset accumulation of fluid? I'm concerned the vet is pursuing worst case scenarios instead of a more basic solution.

Thanks

Chinchilla may be cramped?

Hi,

So we just got our chinchilla, Glorion, about a week ago. Recently he's seemed much more happy and has, on his own, been running around the room for playtime once a day. I've been really excited with how comfortable he's been getting!
However, the past few days he's been ripping up his cage quite a bit. I'll wake up to the bowl we leave in there flipped over, and the bedding either all outside the cage or dug to the padding in several spots.
I'm not sure if he's doing this because he needs a bigger cage, if there aren't enough toys, or what.
I took a picture of his cage and attached it. I know it's generally a little small, and we're still slowly working on getting him a ledge and more toys, but if he's unhappy and that's why he's tearing things up I'll definitely make it top priority.

Thank you so much for the help!

Sneezing?

My chinchilla keeps sneezing. It's been probably 6-8 times the past 2 days. No runny nose, no watery eyes, poops are normal, he's eating regularly..Should I be worried? It seems like a lot of sneezing...??

Advice needed on treats & motivation

Hi all!

My chin has been with me for a few months now and he's gotten very comfortable. I think we've bonded nicely and he seems very trusting of me. When I first got him, I was trying to follow the rules on treat-giving and ended up chasing the poor little guy around to try to get him back into his cage because I wasn't enticing him with a treat. After realizing I was just scaring him, I started giving him a treat to get him back into his cage and things went back to happy times.

Now I feel like the indulgent parent who is spoiling their child..!

My questions:
1) How do you get your chinchilla to re-enter his cage without a treat?
2) Is it okay to give dust baths as often as you want? I live in a relatively humid environment where, even with a dehumidifer running constantly, the humidity hangs out around 55-60% all the time, so I've been giving dust baths liberally. I've read too many can be too drying though. How will I know?
3) Are there things you can feed your chinchilla that are like treats, but that are safe to be given twice a day? Do oats count in that category?

Thanks for the help!

Starting to use Fleece

Hey guys and gals! I have a ferret nation cage and I've always used Carefresh bedding. Well, now that we got pups try and guess what is their favorite treat? They push bedding out of their cage and the dogs love to run over and scarf it down:crazy: I have bought a set of fleece "pillow sheet" type to put the plastic pans in. My question being I only have one set of the fleece, how do y'all keep it clean? I know to brush out the poop but what about pee? Could I buy a litter box for rabbits or ferrets? Thanks for any advice!

Two Chinchillas - Meeting?

I got a chinchilla back in November, his name is Skipper and we were told he was 6 months or younger but they couldn't tell us an exact age. I love Skipper and we have been doing great with him but the more research I did I found that they are social creatures and often like to have companions! This being said I started looking around for another chin! I found one that a family had that were looking to rehome. When we got him he was malnourished it seemed. I don't think the family meant to be doing it but they just didn't know what they were doing. We have him back up to a healthy weight and he is running and playing a lot more now too!! They said he is around 2 years old. So we have tried to get them to meet and get along and it isn't going so well...

I didn't know what I was doing so as soon as we got Bo we put him in the play area with Skipper and they didn't get along so we separated them and started more research! (I understand now that this was a bad choice and I was clueless at the time or I wouldn't have ever done that!)
So for about a week we have put their cages next to each other and once they started not trying to get through the cage at each other we switched cages. So Bo went into Skipper's cage and Skipper into Bo's at the same time so they were still separated... They also didn't seem to mind this at all, they actually quite like the change it seems! I have been rotating them every 8-12 hours or so. I have also let them both take dust baths in the same dust!

However, every time I try to put them together in the play area to play they don't get along. There is no chirping or noises but Skipper keeps jumping on Bo's back and they get in a tuffle. I will break it up as quickly as I can! (I am always sitting in the room with them when we try introductions. They both tend to loose some fur in these commotions but nothing else so far.

I don't know what next to do. Do they just need more time in their cages beside each other? Will they ever get along or should we just stop trying and let them just enjoy single cages?

I want them to get along and love each other but I ultimately want to do whatever is best for both my chin boys!

My Chinchiila Cut its foot. Should i take him to a vet?

So as i was finishing cleaning up my chinchilla's cage, I was taking him back and then he wiggled out of my grasp, trying to jump back into his cage. His foot then got caught in between the wiring and was dangling for about 7 seconds before finally freeing himself. This is the picture of his foot, should I take him to a vet or just clean it up and let it heal on its own?

Appropriately sized wheels for chins

So the chin brothers have finally gotten used to out-of-cage playtime, and seem to really enjoy their exercise. I want to get them a wheel for when we can't let them out in their playpen. Now that they're used to it, they seem so disappointed when it's time to go back in...

I've read through a few threads on here about chin wheels; people seem to say that you can get away with a Silver Surfer wheel if the chin is 'small'. I'm wondering exactly what this means? One of the chins is about 570 grams and the other is just over 700 grams. They're both 10.5 months old. Will the 700 gram chin have a difficult time in the Silver Surfer?

The other consideration is that the cage doors are *just* big enough (I think) to fit in a Silver Surfer, but the Chin Spin seems like it would be too big and slightly overwhelm that level of the cage in any case.

I would like this to be a good investment for their cage (and future cages) but want to make sure I make the right decision. Any advice would be most appreciated!

Skin questions

Hi all,

Last night, I took in a special needs hedgie who is going to need some serious TLC. I noticed that on one of his arms has something that looks a bit like psoriasis. It's not red, but it looks like pieces of dried skin that are lifting off of his arm. His skin between his quills also looks extremely dry. I'm planning on giving him a nice warm bath, with some coconut oil in it, this evening. Is there anything else I can do or give him to help him out?

Training your chin?

Hello everyone

I was just wondering how many of you have trained your chinchillas to do things and how you have done it? My two are litter trained which didn't really take much effort at all and they picked it up very quickly and now I'm thinking about what else I could do.

What have behaviours have you trained them to do and how did you manage it/how long did it take? I assume that positive reinforcement is the key and rewarding them with food when they do the correct thing, but what snacks are safe to feed them so frequently as in every time the do the thing which will hopefully be multiple times when they're out the cage?

Thank you!

Amount of food?

Hello all! I am a chin mommy of two boys, Fred and George. They are just over a year old and are always very very hungry. I have been following the 2 tbs pellets and unlimited hay diet that was suggested to me, but I was wondering if it's safe to feed them more pellets than that?

I was told unlimited pellets/hay until they are one year old and then to start measuring out the pellets. Any advice would be great! Thanks :)

Not sure what is wrong...advice?

My 'sleepy' chin may have taken a turn for the worst. What I thought was him finally warming up to me may have been his way of saying "I'm not well". He is still eating, but slowly (I gave him critical care along with orchard grass and a raisin and instead of inhaling it, him nibbled.) And he is still drinking (fresh water). Also has normal poo. Problem is that he is more so lethargic and stays at the bottom of his cage. When I hold him, he nuzzles up close to my lap or under my neck, shifting occasionally, but stays until I move him. He gets small bursts of energy where he hops a little but has trouble making jumps to low platforms 50% of the time. He even tried to hop off of my shoulder today before I stopped him and he nuzzle back up. I am worried that he perhaps sprained his leg some how, as he is not consinstant in any symptoms of illness or major injury, and is taking his own time to recover. I say sprain because I touched from hip to foot and he didn't pull away or make any noise. I also know that to be 90% sure of anything I would need him seen by a vet, unfortunately I can not afford to take him until next paycheck (unless someone knows of a bill me later vet near cleveland?) Not trying to complain about my situation. I want to help him as best I can with what I am able.

Chinchilla gone missing??

My chinchilla Dusty has gone missing. We don't know if he's indoors or outdoors or what happened. We see NO chinchilla tracks outside in the snow, but we don't hear him indoors either. All we heard once was a chewing sound in the wall, but we do have mice so I am highly doubtful that it would be him.

We put a plate of dust out in each room to see if he uses any of it. We also put his cage outdoors by the stairs to come inside. We have tapped at his dust bath to excite him out and have him come to us, but no luck.

I looked under the bed, under the couch, under my friend's bed, in each little hamper thing we have, I looked in the closets. I looked in all the cupboards. I cannot find him. I am having such a panic attack and I have no clue what to do...HELP!?! It has been 3 hours!!!!!!! He has NEVER done this before...I am so scared... HELPP!!!!!

Not eating or drinking

Hi everyone I took my chin to the vet because he was sneezing a lot they checked him out and he's got a chest infection... my little guy is on antibiotics and we are coming up on the 4th day now but I'm having issues trying to get him to eat or drink at all! The first two days he would eat a bit of critical care but not at all today... I have managed to hand feed him a few pellets and to get him to take a few sips of water but when he is chewing his breathing sounds way more laboured so I don't want to push it with him! I've read a few places that you can give them acidophilus wafers to help with an upset stomach caused by the anti biotics and pedialyte to help with dehydration but I want to know if anyone else has some suggestions or if they agree with the wafers And pedialyte? I just want to get him through all of this!

New Chin owner with a few concerns/questions.

I've owned my first Chin for just over a month now, after a long time spent researching, planning and purchasing all the necessary parts, toys and food.

I bought him from a pets at home store, since there were no adoption centres anywhere near me that had any, not any reputable breeders less than an hours drive away (I didn't want to stress him out with a long drive) I didn't ask his age in all the excitement, which I regret now, but he appears fully grown to me at least.

Like everywhere stated, nothing can truly prepare you for owning a Chinny. My Little boy has given me so many heart attacks and panic stricken minutes in a month, from squashing himself flat and scaling the back of his cage, to leaping from the top level of his cage (onto my head)

Still, certain things concern me with his behaviour and such.

Firstly, he often sits resting only on one of his front paws, the other pulled close in to his body. At first I thought he had broken it, but he appeared to be able to hop about normally on it, and he seems to alternate quite a lot, so its clearly not a break (I also reach in and gently move the little paw about and he doesn't pull away or make any signs of distress) I was curious if this was a common sight. Do a lot of Chin's do this? Is it for a particular reason or just quirky?

I'm struggling to measure how much hay he's eating, since once he's skimmed the top off of the hay racks (I have two, one on each level of his cage) he tends to leave them alone. He's also got a lot of hay in his best box, and a little in his hammock and hive house thing he likes to sleep in, which does get eaten a bit, and he never seems that interested in it too much (He eats it at his own pace)
I assume this is normal?

His pellets are typically normal sized, hard dry and usually dark brown to black in colour. There is always a small amount of tiny little ones and a few longer ones too. They're always massively outnumbered by the tidal wave of normal looking pellets, and it's always been the case since I got him, with no visible change, even after I weaned him off the Pets at Home pellets in favour of a better brand. I assume this is just normal for him? since nothing else appears of out of sorts.

The last big thing I have a worry with is his eyes, or rather the area around his eyes. Since I've had him, I've noticed he will scratch near and around his eye, and he's missing a bit of fur, not lots, but a noticeable patch near his eye. His eyes never look inflamed or different, and he still winks at me to say Hello. I was worried he had some kind of eye infection, but I haven't noticed any change besides occasional little bits of fur missing near his eye in an almost diamond shaped patch and sometimes a little bit of hay in the corner of his eye that he gets out on his own. Is this a common occurrence?

I appreciate any help, information and advice offered. I adore my Little guy, and we're bonding really well, I want to make sure he has the best life I can give him.

Skittish/Change in Behavior

Hello all,

Me, being an overly protective mother, am very concerned for my chin.
Lately, he has been acting very skittish and at sometimes he seems too lazy to even come out.
He has also started to eat more, as he wasn't eating as much beforehand.
He is skittish in the sense that it only takes a small noise to get him hiding behind his house. He comes right back out. He is also not responding when his cage is being cleaned- he used to come out to see what was going on. He does come out to play so it is just a minor change- but hurts me nontheless. He is responding well to seeing his favorite treats. So I'm not too worried.
I should also say that I have been away at school for a couple weeks so my mother is taking care of him. But even while I was home, he was not acting like this. It started up when I left, it seems. But he was not like this last time I left for school either. He's also usually okay with my mother as well.
I'm thinking he may be missing me being in the room and that it's too quiet. There also used to be a lot of mice in the house (that aren't able to get near him or his things) making a lot of noise that are gone now.
Would this explain why he's suddenly skittish, eating a lot, and being a little lazy?
Any suggestions on what to do to help him while I'm away? Noise machine in the room, perhaps?

Thank you!

When are the 2017 shows?

I'm in Illinois and I wanted to try going to a chinchilla show. Does anyone know when the shows are that I can find out more about them?

Eye infection

I just took one of my males into the vet today for an eye infection (Actually my first issue with infection in my 12 years of breeding/owning). He had a bit of a weepy eye on his left and a weepy/red eyelid on the right. Both eyes were open and clear though he was squinting a lot today.
The vet saw no other issues than the weepy eyes and gave him Tritop ointment, applied twice a day for a week. Tonight when I went in to apply his second dose, both eyelids are now red and irritated looking... Is this normal? Should I expect them to be bothered for a bit before better?

Chinchilla Pees Everywhere!

Hi there,

I've been trying to research like crazy on this topic and decided to forget it and come here to ask the experts!

I have a 3.5 yr male chinchilla. He "came home" to me when he was a little over a year and a half years old (meaning some people I knew didn't want him anymore so I took him in). At the first apartment we lived in he had normal chin behavior...at least based off of what I read on here anyway. About 7 months ago we moved to a new apartment in a new state. The apartment was brand new so new scents and no new animal smells (like those from pets who lived in the apartment before). Fred, my chinchilla, absolutely LOVES the apartment. He seemed very happy about the new wooden floors (running and popcorning all over the place) and all the new walls to wall surf off of.

It wasn't until recently he began peeing all over the place. The floor, the new couch, everywhere! He never did it at the apartment before so I was wondering if maybe it was a territorial thing? New stuff that he wants to claim? He'll pee on the couch whether you're sitting there or not... I mean there have been a couple of times where my boyfriend and I had to dodge the stream as he sat there with a menacing look on his face! lol And then when I would go to clean it up he'd get mad at me and attack the paper towel or cloth I was using to clean it up with! He's been caught trying to lick it up as well... =/

Also my boyfriend noticed that when I leave the room to practice yoga in another room, Fred goes nuts aggressively chewing and peeing on everything. He and my boyfriend are buds so I'm not sure why he acts like this when I'm not around. He seems super healthy and happy so I'm just hoping this is normal behavior? This and the peeing thing has been sudden and only began since we moved to this new place. Otherwise he's the sweetest, cutest, onery little thing lol

Anyway, thanks in advance for any feedback. I know only one other person who has a chin and her and I are learning about these adorable critters together haha so I'm glad you are here to ask!
