Bitten ear / Polysporin question

Hi there,
Chino's ear has a scab (right in the middle) with about 3 mm of redness around it. Spotted it yesterday's night. I considered putting Polysporin on, but saw (in other threads) that people say NOT to use Polysporin if it has pain relief med. Of course, this is the type I have. So instead we cleaned with a bit of soap and water (using a wet paper towel) and put some Vaseline. Chino, to our surprise, did not object at all. This morning the ear looks pretty much the same as it did...

Less poop with antibiotics

So, my chinchilla is recovering from an infection and the baytril has made her not want to eat or drink. I'm feeding her CC, but of course she's constipated as well from the baytril lol. She isn't pooping as much as usual. Would you say that's rather normal for being on antibiotics with induced constipation while only eating CC? Don't worry...she gets a LOT of CC maybe 72 or more ml a day. She has her recheck tomorrow. Just so long as her gut doesn't stop moving completely. She will go...

Male Hedgie escaped and may have gotten female

Help! My male hedgie escaped his enclosure some how and I found him chasing my female hedgie around in her enclosure. I think I caught him in time but I’m not sure, I know these guys are quick in the act. The issue is the female he was chasing is his daughter. She IS KEPT SEPARATELY of corse but he somehow broke into her enclosure. She woke me up by making an alerting noise and that’s when I found them. I immediately removed him and put him in a new enclosure with a lock on the doors. IF he...

Wooden cage??? Help!!

Hello,

I am trying to find a new cage for my Hedgehog Noe. I could a woodworker who makes structures with upcycled wood. I I'm planning to get a 4x2 ft cage from him, with an open-top and a mesh wire window covering the front long side of the cage. The wood isn't polished or anything, but it won't beer rigid and dangerous for her either. I don't know what type of wood he's using either, I'm guessing it's a mixture since its upcycled wood. Will this type of cage be safe for my hedgehog? Is...

Chins in need of serious help in Tampa, FL

Was browsing through craigslist ads when I come across this horrible situation in Tampa, FL

http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/for/5423394436.html

In case the ad is removed or cannot be accessed, it reads as follows:

"Breeding pair of Chinchillas with one week old baby for sale. White female and dark gray male chinchillas both are about three years old. No papers! The female usually has two or three babies each time but this time she only had one white baby. She has a history of...

Losing weight after surgery

Good day.
My chin went for dental surgery 10 days ago. He is three years old. The surgery went well but they kept him for five days for observation and syringe feeding.
He's been home for five days now, but losing weight everyday. Very little, but still dropping. I think his teeth is better. I can see he is chewing his pellets, but only from three days ago (I assume because the wound is healing). He was 578g before the surgery and he is now 540g. Does anyone know why this is happenning...

Chinchilla in Maryland

Hello!!! I am looking for a chinchilla that is can come to my home for free, or a very small fee! Thanks

Kacking sound while sleeping?

Does you chinchilla ever kack while asleep? (The sound they make when they are annoyed?)

This is the second time I've heard Susu do this in the past month and she always seems to be very confused when I go check on her. I'm familiar with chin nightmares that result in barking but this is a new one. She makes the sound a few times repeatedly and then goes back to sleep or comes out for a snack as if nothing had happened.

She only ever makes that sound when I need to pick her up and she gets...

Less Feces

This is probably going to be a question with no answer, but I noticed that my chin is produced less feces then usual last night. The thing of it is, everything else is entirely normal. The feces are a proper size, color and texture. My chin is still eating, sleeping and playing normally. He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort and his belly is still soft. Can this happen from time to time and be absolutely normal? Am I just being a worry wart?

New chins :)

It's been 10-ish years since my last chinchillas, and I'm finally in a place where I can have some again.

A violet, sapphire carrier (possible RPA carrier) and a dark ebony possible ToV (possible black pearl, RPA carrier, but those are 2+ generations back in the pedigree). About 9 and 6 months of age. They need names. I'm terrible at names. The violet might be Crumpet (she was climbing the walls of the cage, which caused husband (who is French) to call her "grimpette" - climber, and I...

Playpen Recommendation?

Hi all!
New Chin owner here, he's still a kit so I'm in no rush in letting him roam out of the cage yet.
However, I'm curious of what would be the best suggestion for Playpens? :)
Ideally, ones that is Climbing-Proof and Foldable.
I heard about Tespo Playpen, but unsure if it's high enough for Chins. Any thoughts?

Lone Star Chinchilla

I am purchasing a baby from lone star chinchilla and was wondering if anyone had ever gotten and baby from them? Are they good breeders? Are they trustworthy? They seem really nice but just wanted to see what everyone thought... I know most of their products are high quality!

Having Troubles as a Newly Chin Owner

Hi there!
I recently decided to adopt a few months old Chin, named him Chobi!
He has been here slightly more than a week.
I let him free roam the bathroom at times.
The problem is everytime I try to return him to the cage, I wound up scaring him as I need to pick him up. :(
This results in him being scared and agitated around me now and I begin to feel discouraged as a Chin owner. :(
Is there any tip in how to gain Chin's trust?

Ideally it would be nice if one day he'd want some pets and...

Living in two places?

Hi there! I have not been on in a while. My parents are taking a break and my mom is moving out. I am not quite old enough to move out yet. I will be with both parents an equal amount of time. I have two options for my chinchilla. I could have her stay at my moms. My mom would take care of her, but Sage is really attached to me. She would not get the same amount attention than if I was with her all the time. There is a possibilty that I could get her a companion. The other option is to have...

Loss of chinchilla

On may 10,2021 I lost my first chinchilla. This chinchilla was very special to me because his first owner was my sister, who has passed. He was the only pet she had at the time. He lived for 9 years. His death was sudden which is why it’s much more difficult for me to process.
I feel terrible because I wish he would have lived a longer life.
He’s left behind his cage mate and it worries me.43091E5E-AA1F-4D37-8A70-F7BB0C30374C.jpeg

How to give chinchillas eye drops?

Hello!

I come here once again looking for advice.

A couple of days ago, I noticed that Susu's left eye seemed a little squinty and irritated. She was definitely a bit teary-eyed and the eye was definitely bothering her. The very next morning I called her vet. However, they're fully booked for the remaining of this month and are only taking emergency appointments. I do not mind paying for a more expensive appointment, but based on the fact that there is no change in eye color, there are no...

Help. Something odd with his penis.

I've noticed my little guy has been grooming/biting around the genital area a lot more so after giving it a check I didn't see any hair rings but I noticed it was sticking out more and also looks swollen. Also the coloration seems very dark (I just recently returned from university so while I was gone I wasn't the main caretaker so I'm concerned something happened while I was away). Overall his actions and activities seem normal and playful. He's eating/drinking fine and pooping just as...

Do they trust me?

Hi everyone, new member here!

As some kind of introduction, I've adopted two rescue chins in mid-January. I'm quite experienced with pets, and quickly fell in love with these two. They are mother and daughter, respectively a 3-year-old standard grey and a 1-year-old beige. They get along quite well, but their history before their rescue involves a bit of trauma (which is also why I fell for them so easily).
Here's the thing : they have gotten accustomed to their new place for a few months...

Prairie dogs?

Does anyone on here have a prairie dog as a pet?? Or have had one in the past? I came across an ad in CL (I know, I know!) and I'm curious about these little guys. Their owner seems to really care about them since he wrote a HUUUUGE post about them. I've been looking around on the internet for information but the PD community is severely slacking on their forums!

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Discoloration in Chinchillas Eye

Hi all! My 8 year old chin has some weird coloring in his eye and I was wondering if anyone knew what it was. I will attach a pic with and without flash. It seems like a blueish/grey hue. I thought it was just the lighting but after inspecting with my phone light, I realized it was not normal. I don’t know if he is just getting older or if it is something I should consult a vet about. Just don’t want to stress the poor guy out if the vet won’t help him![ATTACH...
