Swollen penis, no fur ring, lethargic

I need advice & help. I CANNOT get to a vet- my partner was recently in a really bad accident and we DO NOT have a car or income right now, as he can’t get to his job down the mountain anymore. We are living off minimal savings right now until we find a job within walking distance. This was the worst possible time for this boy to get sick so here we are, and I am trying my best but figured I would ask for help here to see if anyone had dealt with something similar.

Okay so:

Looking for a hedgehog in Alaska!

Hello,
I am looking to buy/adopt a hedgehog
If you have a hedgehog you no longer want, can't take care of, etc., please email me!:)

What am I doing wrong?

I have two chinchillas that I have looked after for the same amount of time and both are treated equally. Their behaviour is completely opposite and for some reason one of them kind of hates me and the other doesn’t. She won’t come out of the cage and if she does it’s because I’ve had to try and pick her up - which she really doesn’t like and tries to run off as fast as possible, but if I don’t I worry that she won’t be getting any exercise. Sometimes I just let her stay in the cage because...

Chinchilla Breeders/Rescues

Hello, I am currently looking to adopt a chinchilla. I know a couple pet stores around that either have them or can get them in. But I know that its better to adopt or get from a reputable breeder. This is where I'm stuck, I can't find any place thats not too far. The closest it about 3 and a half hours. If needed I can drive that far but if possible find something closer. I live in Western Illinois. Thank you.

Nails?

I heard you shouldn’t clip your chinchillas nails but my chinchilla scratched me on accident, is there something I can give him to make his nails less sharp?

Help!

So, I got my chinchilla last Sunday and litter trained him within a week! He goes in the litter box every time, which is great! Exept now only goes in bowls, wherever he goes! Including in his dust bath house. Idk how to get him to stop or even if there is a way, but I'm having to throw out new dust after every bath! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Or links to cheaper dust if not,😂

Question on foot health

Hello all,

New member and fairly new chin owners here. We have a 5 year old female chin received from a friend who could no longer keep her, we've had her about 2 months. Yesterday we noticed her back feet seem a bit swollen and dry, and we're concerned about bumblefoot. She's kept on pine bedding, although there are two solid metal shelves in the cage. The cage is cleaned about twice a week. Is there anything else it might be, or specifics to look for on the feet? Chin doesn't like to be...

What colouring is my chinchilla? White Mosaic vs. Wilson White?

So recently a couple fellow chin owners have told me that they're pretty certain my chinchilla is actually a Wilson White, and not a White Mosaic (which is what I've always assumed since this is what he was sold to me as and I've had him for 3 years now.)

I've definitely debated over this myself before but from what I've heard Wilson Whites typically won't have any black tipping on their fur and usually a pure white tail with no grey at the base and Periwinkle doesn't fully fit these...

Rehoming Chinchilla

Hi Everyone!

I had to make the difficult decision to rehome my chinchilla. She is about 6 years old and the sweetest girl. She will come with all supplies and her critter nation cage (2 levels). I am charging a rehoming fee of $200 (price negotiable, don't care about the money just want her to go to a good home). I am in the Philly area (Pennsylvania) but willing to travel for the right person.

Chinchilla cage with accessories

I have a 3 level cage in good used condition for sale. All that is shown comes with. It could use a good cleaning. The metal pans are not professional but they hold in the chips and work great. I also have 3 pads if your wanting to go that route. Each cage can be separate or open it for a 3 level cage. Use to house 6 chins. I may have a few other things I can add to the cages once I find the rest of my stuff. Asking 250.00 obo. I am located in Elk Grove, California.

Going away?

hi! so i’ve had my chin for around a year and a half and have only gone on a trip once since i’ve had her. i left her with a caretaker then, so she was well cared for. she’s suuper attached to me and has somewhat of a separation anxiety thing with me. in mid october of this year i’m going to study abroad for around 4-5 weeks, and i’m worried about leaving her. she’s my only chin and heavily relies on me, so i’m not sure what to do. my family will be taking care of her while i’m away and will...

Meet Chico

I have been on here for a few months, I know. This isn't an introduction for me, it's for my newly adopted chin, Chico! I have been trying to convince my parents to let me get a chinchilla for nearly 2 years! They finally gave in and I put a deposit down on a baby from a breeder called "Lone Star Chinchilla". After nearly a month, still, there were no babies! I was worried that it would still be a few months. I had decided to go ahead and just get one from the pet store. I walked into the...

Are there any infamous chinchilla breeders?

Hello, I was just wondering if there were chinchilla breeders that are well known for being horrible. I was wondering this because I know that with dogs there is but I was not sure about other animals.

Lister Bandage Scissors

Bandage scissors, or bandage forceps, are scissors that often have an angled tip with a blunt tip on the bottom blade. This which helps in cutting bandages without gouging the skin. Lister bandage scissors and utility bandage scissors exhibit the well known angle, while Knowles bandage scissors have blades that are either straight or curved.

Lister Bandage Scissors are very popular...

What age should i look for in a second chinchilla?

Hello, I've decided to get a new chinchilla friend for my current chinchilla, but I'm not sure if I should go for a certain age chinchilla. My current chin is over 3 and a half years old. I know size plays a role in dominance and how they can get along together, so should I look for a specific age range? Or at least search for a chin the same size as him? I know the getting along even in the same age range isn't guaranteed and each little guy is different, but I'd like to try and aim in the...

Dust Bath Supervision

When the Chin is playing, is it suggested to leave the Dustbath out until THEY are done.... or do we need to limit their time.

I’m worried about overuse, however if the chin seems normal bathing and playing at the same time. It seems normal to let him do his thing until he’s done bathing.

I was told only 10 mins per bathing session.

Underweight

So my new chinchilla has gone through some medical issues and she has lost quite a bit of weight. Shes gained a lot of it back but i can feel her spine when i pet her when shes in a sitting position. She doesn't have much fur on her back rn as she lost it from being spooked at the vet. Is she still severely underweight or are most chins like this. My other chin has all her fur so i cant really tell the difference between them but they both weigh about the same current, just over a pound.

Fur thinning on haunches of chin?

My chinchilla's fur has been noticeably thinning on his backside. At first I thought it might be normal shedding, or he got startled and lost some fur, but I'm getting concerned. I checked his fur to see if it was irritated at all (in case of a fungal infection) but his skin looks perfectly healthy. My other chins aren't experiencing any fur thinning. Has anyone experienced something similar? Should I be concerned? Please help!

Considering getting a new animal, need opinions

So lately I've been struggling with some certain things and I'd like to bring a new friend in the mix. I already have a chinchilla and he's great! Standard good boy, but I'd like to add to my little family. I'm considering either 1. adding a new chinchilla in the mix or 2. getting a couple rats. Now I know this forum isn't really a rat forum, but any advice helps. I've had my chinchilla for three years now (will be four years this October) so I understand age may be an issue that keeps him...

Safe Chinchilla Treats?

What are good some good options for daily Chinchilla treats? Also wondering if anyone feeds their Chins Vitakraft Nibble Rings and if so how many a day? The bag says a few in the bowl and we usually do one in am. One when he goes back in cage and one at bed time. It this ok?

What to put in a chinchilla travel cage?

I am picking up my 8 week old chin this weekend! I'm super exited as it is my first! I have all the supplies, a critter nation cage, etc needed but I don't know what to bring when I go to pick him up. I have one of those cat travel carriers but I don't know what to put in it. We raise puppies and so we always advise the owner not to put food in with the puppy because it might throw up but chinchillas, I heard don't throw up so I don't know if I should put hay / food in there or not.

My Chinchilla Died

I have had two male chins for 1 year and 6 months and found one dead this evening. I had bought them for my daughters for Christmas and received them 2 months after birth. My family and I haven’t paid much attention to them this morning being that the children returned to school today and I was working. When my daughter went to do her daily cage cleaning is when she noticed one was not moving. It happened suddenly and we don’t know what happened. Yesterday I did cook a Sunday dinner in which...

Chinchilla evacuation kit?

Hi y'all,

This isn't an active emergency, but I live on the Gulf Coast and hurricane season is an annual threat. When living with my folks I planned to just stick it out there for hurricanes because they lived so far inland and have a generator. Now that I live on my own, I feel I need to take hurricane season more seriously. I can't really find a "chinchilla evacuation kit checklist" online so I've been trying to put one together myself. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly...

Please please help me!!! I don't know what else to do.

I have already posted on the forum regarding this.
Long story short I got two chinchillas in poor condition and covered in ringworm. Disney passed away and left his brother walt with us.
Walt will be 8 months old the end of the week and in that time he's had ringworm for about 6 of those months.
He was prescribed an oral liquid medication twice for 28 days each time and we have given him sand baths with tinactin powder in them every other day.
Vet did prescribe a thing to wash him with...

Chins Don't Adore The Cold

I know, the title may seem weird. For context, I've heard that chins love when the temps are below 60 degrees F. 50-55? They love it! So active and everything. But my two aren't like that at all. When the room temp is below 60, they actually aren't very active at all. They aren't lethargic or reclusive, they just aren't as hyper as they could be. Even at their active hours, dawn and dusk. They don't love it, they don't hate it. They seem.. meh. But in temps 64-66? Oh, that's their prime...

General Grooming and Knots

Hello, my chin gets regular dust baths and I change her bedding every day but over the years she does have some knots in her fur on her hind quarters. She's around 16 y.o. The knots don't seem to ever grow out but I also don't think they are causing discomfort. But Chinchillas don't talk so of course I am not sure.

What do you guys do to react to fur knots? Do you have a secret to working them out, I have tried gently pulling but they pull her skin so I worry it might tear and cause...

Hi so i rescued my second chinchilla 3 weeks ago and we were told she showed symptoms of teeth issues but they had her checked out mupltipe times and she look fine. Since we got her i suspected it was malo, especially considering the symptoms she was already displaying, hunching, grinding teeth, selective with food/prefered soft food, never chewed on hay or any toys. We planned on taking her in but our other chin had an emergency so we had to put off miphas vet appointment. She started...

Soft/runny poop and something red next to it?

Hi all!

I am a proud new owner of a chinchilla. We've only had him a few days so bear with me because I'm still learning about this wonderful little dude.

So far he seems to be doing well. I clean his poop out daily and almost all of it has been dry, but I came across a few wet pieces today with liquid running around them. There's also a strange looking red thing next to them, and I have no clue what it is.

A couple things to note - the first few days I fed him a couple freeze dried...

Bringing cagemate with to the vet?

My chinchilla has something up with his eye so he has a vet appointment in the morning. He's incredibly anxious and has been moved around a lot in his life. He's not used to me properly yet so I was wondering if I should bring his bonded cagemate with? She's also had a hard life and gets quite stressed when she's alone and can't find her cagemate.

Is it worth the added stress for her to bring her with to the vet to keep him company or is it best to just take him alone? She's used to the...

Is the gap of the bars too large for chinchillas for this cage?

Unfortunately Ferret Nations Cages were unavailabe from the shop I asked and they only bring cages in my country 1-2 times a year. Looked for another large cage on Amazon from Italian manufacturers, but they would not export it to my country either.

So I ordered this

Counting the number of bars, their gap and diameter and the cage's length, it seems they are larger than the 2-2.5 cm gap...

Quarentine cage redo!

I decided to upgrade my chins from plastic shelves lined with fleece to a fully wooden cage. Was not cheap or particularly easy, but I love how it turned out and knowing they're safe makes it all worth it, my standard grey learnt how to unpick stitches which helped boost my decision along!!! I didn't have a before picture, but the socond one gives you an idea :) safe to say they love it too, much more levels to bounce around on

Allergic to Chinchillas?

When I hold Mr. B I sometimes get little scratches from him, they turn red and puffy afterwards. Does anyone else get this and is it a Chinchilla allergy? I've read that most Chinchilla allergies are actually dust/timothy hay, but these are respiratory.

Four chins in a three level

Got a question. We knew little about chinchillas when we got two that became four, but we have done anything and everything for the ones we have and they live among us in our living room in the a three level nation cage, decked out with custom cubies, ledges, and a Dr Who Police Box. They are in need of nothing from what I can tell. The boys were successfully neutered in Northern Virginia at Stahls, and after months all were introduced with zero problems to date. No area is cut off from the...

Can chinchillas sleep or drowse sideways?

I had to wake up the chins to guide them to their cage.. One of them after some running and hoping here and there, stood still looking at me and then he closed his eyes and lied sideways with his feet sideways on the floor too, kinda like rabbits do when they lie down. Just for a short moment though. Then he resumed his normal stance and left.

Was this because he was tired or still sleepy?

Eye infection

So I have a 3 year old chinchilla and a month and a half ago his right eye started to lose fur and got pink really quick. I did some research and i found out that it was an eye infection. I went to the pet store and told them about the situation and they suggested me to buy a colloidal silver solution, which is supposed to contain water and silver. They told me to apply 2 drops every morning and night for a week or so. It’s been two weeks and nothing changed, i don’t know what to do. Any...

How does your single chin deal when you need to leave the house?

Hello everybody,

As we see a glimmer of normalization in the horizon, I have come to realize I will soon have to leave the house much more often than I have in the past year. I thankfully have the opportunity to continue working mostly remote, but I will need to go to work for full days about once a week, as well as starting to spend time with friends again once it is safe to do so, just for my own mental health. Also, I'd like to start visiting my family again, which means trips out of the...

End of Life Care

My Chinchilla (Junior) is 20+ years old, has only been to the vets once in his life (when we thought he was developing a cataract) and has never had any issues with his teeth.

We believe he may be reaching end of life, as he's eating very little, doesn't appear to have much energy, and is always napping. We want to make him as comfortable as we can but not sure how to do this.

He has almost stopped eating his pellets and eats very little hay, but he never refuses a raisin (one in a morning...
