Not eating, GI stasis?

Hi all, I really need some advice. Please no judgment.
My chinchilla hadn't been eating and drooling for three days so I took him to get dental work. They fed him CC there and he came home. He's been home with me for another 5 days and still isn't eating. He's so fussy that I haven't been able to get a lot of CC into him. I have to be honest here so I believe it's been a week from today since he was fed a decent amount.
He was on Baytril and Metacam so I figured he didn't have an appetite...

Chin Spin Wheels

Hi everyone,

I live in Canada 🇨🇦 and wonder if the company that manufactured the Chin Spin Wheel, went out of business? I’ve looked on Amazon in both the Canadian and US sites to no avail. There’s another version of it on Etsy but I don’t like the fact that it’s all aluminum. Our chinchilla is in our daughter’s room and I’m afraid it will be very noisy. The one that I’d like to get is made by Quality Cage Crafters.

Anyone know where these are available to purchase from these days? 😊

Dust or Sand Bath?

Hi! I had always use sand for my chinchillas' bath, but there are some people that think dust is better.

I don't know, I think dust it' too dusty 😅 I'm concerned that dust can lead to respiratory problems. I mean, the difference is huge, just watching two youtube's videos about dust ( Free Short URL Shortner - Oke.io ) and sand bath ( Free Short URL Shortner - Oke.io ). What do you think?

How to get pee out of carpet?

I am planning on putting something under the cage. My white carpet is stained with pee. I have tried vinegar and a cleaner for cats and dogs and you can still see it. Is there anyway for me get the stain out?

Is all timothy hay ok?

I have fussy chins (I think that's the norm) and I bought some of the science selective timothy hay. My boy loves it. It's way greener than other timothy hay I've seen and smells amazing but different to other browner hays but is sold as being for rabbits. It's 100% timothy hay but is it ok?

Are there types/brands etc. Of chinchilla safe hay like meadow and timothy that we shouldn't be feeding them?

Keeping chinchillas cool

Besides keeping the a/c running wat are some other ways to keep my chinchilla cool during the summer. I have a lot of granite slabs in her cage that she lays on a lot but rn California is in a state of emergency due to heat and fires. I keep her water cold and provide plenty of it. What are some other ways to keep her cool.

Cross posted from emergencies/

Hi All, wondering if anyone has knowledge about this beyond the basics my vet does. Gizmo began having seizures about a month ago after she had suddenly gone blind. We took her to the vet after the very first one, and the vet said this sometimes happens to Chins and we usually can’t figure out why. He put her on a steroid medication which eased the seizures for a bit, but now they are back daily (they last about 5 seconds). I’ve been in regular communication with the vet but he is reluctant...

Baytril for URI, chin constipated and not eating

Hey all, my chinchilla has had a pretty bad URI and was prescribed baytril after the bactrim didn't help. He has stopped eating the critical care and I'm having to water it down and force feed him. He is now constipated and a little bloated. He's passing a little bit of poop but they're small. I've been giving him baby gas drops and he is on metacam for pain. Vet recommended cat hairball laxative for constipation. Has anyone ever used this? I've been giving him belly massages and letting him...

His name is Chino and he is really great, but we cannot provide the right amount of time he needs. We would rather him be in the care of someone who can give him the proper attention 😢

We have a nice big 2 story cage with a safe wheel (no holes).

How long before you should throw out toys?

This might be a dumb question, but how long do you recommend keeping toys before they should be thrown out? Like if they're not mostly chewed up or peed on or showing any obvious issues, is there a time limit where afterwards you should throw out wooden chews or vine toys or other chews etc.? Also is there anything to look out for that might hint that a toy should be thrown out?

Rescues or breeder in Southern California

Hi Ya'll! I have been thinking about getting my chinchilla a friend recently as well as expanding her cage. I would love to own a white mosaic chinchilla but I'm not picky. Are there any breeders or rescues in southern California that you guys would suggest

My chins love my heated blanket

So the other day while I was cleaning up in my room I let my two chins out to play on my bed, not realizing my heated blanket was on. They spent the whole time sitting on it.
So today I figured I would let them out with the blanket on a lower setting and the whole time they crawled around under the blankets on top of the heated one and wouldn’t come out. I’ve had them for six years now and I’ve always kept them in a cooler environment, is this normal? And safe?

Chinchilla noises randomly

I’m not exactly sure why, but sometimes at random moments my chinchilla makes sounds whenever no one’s present or in a different room. Is it because she’s bored or something? She does have another friend to hang out so I’m not sure why she does that. I know it’s not threatening and she perfectly fine when I check up on her. I really appreciate it if anyone could help me out on what it could mean.

Chinchilla breathing problems

Need advice for a chinchilla that’s is acting normal but breathing heavy, both awake and sleeping.
bloodwork results came back all organs functioning normally.
xrays showed a calcified blood clot from awhile ago in the chest, spondylosis, and gas. Also the vets noticed on further look at the pictures thickening of the lymph nodes around the front of the heart. I can attach pictures.
we are currently treating with Baytril for a possible infection, and metacam since Thursday incase it was from...

Chinchilla hair issues

Recently the hair on my chinchilla's chin has become clumped and hard, like the fur is getting stuck together and forming tiny spike shapes around his chin. I started giving him more dust baths and that seemed to help but then I noticed another spot with hard clumped fur close to his right leg and thats when I started getting worried. Emergency might be overrated but I just need to know if this is bad or not.

Chin show cages?

Hello,

I'm planning on attending my first show this year, and just wanted to know if the cages they are shown in are supplied, or if I need to purchase some before hand? Also, do the ear tags need to have the year letter along with the number on the front of the tag or is just the number OK for ECBC shows?

Chin toilet bedding

Heyhey,

I wasn't sure if this has been asked yet, but I have been searching for new bedding, but the only one I have found so far is Tumblefresh, is this one suitable? Chinchilla supply websites

Hey, I used to have a list of awesome sites where I could buy toys, snacks, cage accessories, bulk toy parts ... but most of them seem to no longer be working I was wondering if you guys could tell me the best chin supply sites you've used.

I still shop at Chewy for my food / Hay
TJ's Chinchilla supply - TJs Chinchilla Supplies for a lot of my bulk toy parts
I've been getting my dust from ChillDust: Bathing Dust...

So phresh bedding / Aspen or Soft wood

I know both aspen and pine are safe.
I tried both aspen and soft wood ( natural blend of pine and other shavings ) from so phresh adding to paper bedding.

I used to use only paper bedding but they eat it so now I mix it with wood bedding. They chew and eat wood bedding too but I feel like wood is safer than paper.

I liked the aspen one because the soft wood one is very light and fly away, however you can see a picture of chin on only soft wood one, not on aspen one.
And I think I read this...

Best hay brand?

Hi guys, I have owned chinchillas for a little over a year now, they are currently on Mazuri pellets but hay wise, I am still going back and forth. I had them on Oxbow Timothy for well over the year I've had them, but lately it's quality had gone down and I don't like it. I switched to Small Pet Selects and it was horrible, very short strands and more dust than hay. What do you guys recommend hay wise for my little guys? They aren't picky, but I am and want them to have good, green long hay...

2 sweet young bonded male chins (1 beige and 1 ebony/grey)

Hi,
I am in the Boston/ MA area and looking to potentially rehome my two chinchillas. One is two years old and one is about to turn one. They are both unreal cute, extremely bonded, sweet, adorable little personalities. They snuggle, run to see you, and will sit on your hand.

I love them dearly but live in a small apartment and am allergic to their hay, dust bath, etc. I also want them to have a home with a bigger enclosure than I have room for, and more places for them to run around.

Giardia but vet says don't treat it. Please help me out.

This is going to be long and I apologise in advance but please read and help me out. We are on our second vet now and I just don't know what to do.
It all started back towards the beginning of June. My 4 month old chinchilla stopped pooping. He also wasn't eating much and was barely touching water. He went to the vet and they prescribed critical care. He had to be hand fed the CC and really wasn't enjoying the whole process after about a week I called the vet to give him and update and...

Safe tape?

I built a playpen out of cardboard and didn’t think she could get to the duct tape. Well she can, I had to stop her so is there a safe tape I can use instead. The duct tape is on the outside of the playpen. This is what it looks like. She gets to it where the fleece is draped and low corners.E5933E78-5C4D-45DF-880C-9C1F94530F91.jpegB60211A5-C983-4EE1-84C7-07BAC5E9D202.jpeg[ATTACH type="full"...

Pellet to hay ratio..

Since January I've been feeding Mr. B Sherwood, which he will eat but never finishes the 2tbsp. Before that I fed him Oxbow, he would eat almost all the pellets (~2tbsp). Recently I decided to switch him back to Oxbow because Sherwood pellets are expensive ($18 a bag!), and he super loves Oxbow pellets. What I've discovered though is he eats much less hay when he's eating Oxbow, so his diet is more pellets than hay. On Sherwood, he ate A LOT of his hay, and maybe 1/2 - 3/4 of his pellets...

Housing safety question...

Hi all,

My rascals Chicco & Chinno started peeing on their beautiful clay house (un-glazed, made by my daughter). Cleaning with vinegar:water solution didn't convince them it is not their wood-shaving potty dish but a house. No idea why had they started doing so more than a year after receiving the clay house, but I don't think I can convince them otherwise, so I had to remove it from their cage. They have now only a fleece-covered hanging tube, a hammock and a Kaytee Tropical Fiddle Sticks...

Hay and treats

So I've had my chinchillas since Christmas. I get on the site multiple times to get information in stuff that I need about my chinchillas. But everybody says something different. So I'm asking what kind of Timothy Hay do you recommend? What kind of treats can they or can't they have? I know that you can give them treats a couple times a week but it cannot be more than 10% of their diet. Another question I have is where do you guys buy your hay and your Apple sticks? Is it better to leave hay...

Side by side cage method

I’m doing this I’m being patient about it so I’m definitely not going to rush it, but how long should they be side by side before I let them both out for supervised playtime?

one has been with me one month longer. So much more established than my new one.
