My chin is 1 1/2 years old. This is the first time I have noticed him really shedding. Hair I'm his cage and when I hold him it's like holding a cat..lots of hair after. Started about a week ago. And then since this started...he doesn't run on his wheel at night...like he has no energy....is this normal? His environment hasn't changed nor has his food or hay.

Chinchilla Bonding in groups of three
So I have been wanting to adopt a chin for a long time now since before I purchased my two boys and I found an add on craigslist close enough for me to drive to. I am not planning for the new chinchilla to be able to bond with my already bonded pair and I have a separate cage prepared for him already and everything. I was however wondering if anyone had any experience in getting two chins to bond with a new chin and if it is a good idea to try or if it could just mess everything else up? I understand about how to slowly introduce chinchillas because it could be dangerous and that some chins will just never bond and only fight. Both of my chinchillas are under 6 months so I wouldn't be planning this until they were over 6 months to a year so that they are not so small and fragile in case an argument did break out. This would be more safe right? or would it be better to introduce them younger? Or just not introduce them at all? Either way I will be happy because I don't plan on them all three bonding but it would make things easier for me so if it is possible I wanted to give it a try.

Chin eye bugers
Both my chins get little eye crusties right after they dust bath. I use blue cloud so I don't understand why the dust bath would irritate their eyes? They literally only get them right after a dust bath. Maybe because they are both so young? Does this happen to anyone else's chins cause it has me a bit worried.
Bladder stones - Surgery for older chin?
My 11-year-old chin, Jordan, has a bladder stone and infection. He is still able to urinate right now, so it's not critical, but he does have some blood in his urine that prompted today's vet visit and discovery. They gave me antibiotics to treat the infection and I'm bringing him back in Tuesday for a consultation for surgery with the senior exotics vet. The vet I spoke with today was hesitant to recommend surgery due to his age and the chance that he could just form another stone.
I'm concerned about putting him through a serious surgery, but at the same time, he's otherwise happy and healthy. No tooth issues or history of tooth issues (they checked today). He's not quite as rigorous with his grooming as he used to be, but mostly he doesn't mind if I work out any knots in his fur that he can't get. I mostly just don't want him to suffer. I lost my degu suddenly last year and it was so hard seeing him with a little oxygen mask on his tiny face hugging a hot water bottle. I don't think I can handle seeing Jordan like that. But I hate to not treat him since he is still enjoying life.
Has anyone gone through this surgery with an older chin before? How did they do?

Bedding
I've been looking through the forum to find stuff on bedding, however, I don't have time to look through all 51 pages. I was wondering what the best type of bedding would be. I'm going to try to make fleece liners, however, I'm getting the cage when I get the chin, so I can't measure it to make them now (and there's no guarentee that she won't chew them). I'll only have one or two chins and this should be temporary bedding so cost isn't really an issue.
I've seen stuff about Carefresh not being very good for chins, so what would be good to use until I get the chance to make fleece liners? Also what would be good to use as a litter box and what kind of litter should I use?

Oxbow Chinchilla
So today I found out my local Tisol got bought out, and now everything costs an arm and a leg.
So i am wondering if anyone on here buys in bulk in western canada and doesn't mind sharing?

Remove second floor in Fn or keep?
So I have a double model FN cage and I have seen a lot of chin owners that don't have that middle floor and just make it one large cage. I was just curious as to how everyone else likes to use their Fn and if their chins prefer the second floor or prefer the jumping room? Really the only thing that stops me is the fear of having one of my chins fall from the top of the cage all the way down to the second floor.
super trusting kit
Hi I recently just saved a baby chin when he was 8 weeks old. He is now 13 weeks. And ever since I brought him home he's trusted me from day one.. he comes right up to me grooms me all the time let's me hold him loves his chin ear n belly rubs he will take a chin rub for half hour if he could. He loves to jumps all over me n loves my kids. When I let him out for freeplay he will come right up to my toddler jump all over her n start nibbling her toes n hands so gently.. I was wondering is this normal for chinchillas. Or at least for kits
critter nation for baby chin
Hi I recently just saved a baby chin.. I've never owned one befor. I went on kijiji and found a brand new double CN for free. But couple prblems, first there is plastic pans. Am I able to just cover the whole pan in fleece, almost like a pillow case? Also he is only 13 weeks old is he allowed in the whole cage I read somewhere I had to block it off and only give him half of it
Positive bonding
Attachment 22203Hi everyone! Just wanted to share a quick story (: about 3 months ago now I adopted a (now 4 mo. Old) female standard she was very very shy and often barked and sometimes bit my boyfriend or I any time either of us were near the cage or refilling her food... BUT last night during our nightly bonding I had my hands just inside the cage for her to smell and she came over and sat on my hands! She was so calm and Friendly, such a nice surprise from our grumpy Callie. It's the little victories that count!
For anyone feeling discouraged about bonding just stick with it. I may have only had her for a couple months but there were some days that I really thought she'd never come around and now she really is warming up! Patience is key.

Potty training.
Hi. I have two boys ( one is 6 month old, second is 3,5 month old). Now I try to potty training them. I put a litter box with pine pellets, but looks like they dont use it at all. I try grab they poop and put in a litter pan, but everything the same. Because no sight of pee there. But they pee at wooden shelves always. I try clean the shelves with water and vinegar, but it didnt help, because they pee at the same place. What can I do for training them pee to litter pan, and how try to stop them pee on a shelves. Is the some sprays maybe which disinfected pee smell?
What Does This Mean
I was wondering if anyone can help me out here. My Chin has done this the past 2 nights. I have a video I uploaded below to show you what he is doing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-Wess_VrhA
I've had him for a week now and he is already climbing on my shoulder some and allowing the occasional pets.
The first time he let me pet him 2 days ago he was on this ledge and he let me pet him for like 20 secs and then started rubbing himself on the cage...
Last night my wife petted him a bit in another part of his cage and then jumped on this ledge(she was standing right beside it) and started rubbing himself on the cage towards her hand. I then reached in and petted him a bit and he accepted it.
After both of these events he shook his head and made a sneezing sound. It was just one noise not a chain of them. It also was not any kind of shriek... It sounds more of a sneeze.
He also chatters his teeth while in the position. I've read this could be anger or happiness. He let me pet him while he chatters... Does this symbolize happiness?
So, I guess I have a few questions here.....
Does anyone know what the rubbing of the cage means?
What could this sneezing noise be?
Should I leave him alone when he does this?
Does he associate this ledge with petting? Could this be his way of telling me he wants to be petted, by jumping on this ledge?
Like i said I've had him for a week and he seems to trust me. Last night before the petting he climbed off of the bathroom counter onto my shoulder and into my hand. He then let me set him on the floor, and he also climbed my back up to my shoulder the night before...
I just want to make sure I am not bothering him as I don't want him to be scared of me..... Just looking for someone with little more experience to help me out here..... Sorry for the long post!!!

Repairing rusty cages
I have a few cages that were given to me that have metal cage floors that are rusty to the point that some of the metal has rusted away. I'm toying with the idea of replacing the floor, but not having experience in disassembling and reassembling cages, I'm wondering if there is an easier way to fix them. I see in one of the floors, it looks like the previous owner patched one area with a new piece of 1/2" x 1" and j-clips. I'm a little nervous about doing that, though, because I'm concerned about the rusty exposed edges of the remaining wire. In order to feel like the floor is sanitary again, I'd really just love to replace it, then perhaps make some nice fleece "rugs" to cover half of the flooring so that the chin occupying that space can use the floor bust still get rest for his/her feet. I have both 1/2" x 1" and 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth to do the job. If this were your cage, how would you fix a rusty floor?
Blackberry Branches?
Does anyone wash and oven (or sun) dry bare blackberry branches for their chins? We have a few thornless plants that I remove the leaves for herbal use (for me) and have dried them to give to our rabbits, but I'm wondering if these would benefit the chins as well.

strand of hair in the head
I'm a new owner and my chinchilla is 4 months old, in his head has appeared some soft strands of hair lighter than his fur, I've gently pulled one of them and it came off quite easily but other appeared, he takes two baths a week each 10-15 min, should I be worried? :hair:
New Chin / New Owner
Before you start reading this I want to say sorry for the long post. So, last Friday we decided to get my daughter a Chin for her birthday. She turned 5 and wanted a guinea pig but I decided on the cuter Chinchilla. I want to add I do not let her try to grab him. I make her sit still and let him come to her...... This was kind of a spur of the moment thing but I did do a little research before I picked him up. I bought him from a local random guy who said he didn't have time to take care of him any more. The guy advised that he was 1 1/2 years old. He came with a cage and everything needed. The stuff and been chewed on and worn out plus I thought his cage was to small. We went to Petsmart and bought a new cage that is 19"W x 41"L x 24"H. We also got him some toys, lava ledges, and a wooden house. Pretty much the only thing we kept from his old cage was his Chinchiller stone.
When we let him out and about he would pretty much ignore everyone and do his own thing. He would come take hay or food out of your hand but would not let you touch him. He also seems to get scared when you talk to him while he is in a big open area. I let him run around in my living room and some in my bedroom. I felt that he doesn't interact with us very much when I do that so I decided to try the bathroom play time. Its more of a smaller space and he can't run around as much, but he is kind of forced to interact with us. I've done this everyday since last Saturday and I think he is beginning to trust me. He will walk across my lap and smell all over me. He won't really climb on my arms or hands and still doesn't like to be touched. He seems like it bothers him that his fur is messed up.
So, last night I was in the bathroom with him and I started rearranging his cage and he was super curious. Pretty much followed my hands around his cage to see what I was doing. One time I had my back turned towards him and he climbed up my back and sat on my shoulders. He also let me scratch his chin for about 15 secs last night. I've read to takes a bit to build their trust and build a bond but I've only had this dude for 6 days and he seems to be ok with me.
From what I said... Does it sound like he seems to trust me?
Also, last night he was making very feint "chirping" sounds while he was running around.... Does anyone know what that may symbolize?

Sticky stinky poop and strange plant material in hay
So as I went to check on and pick up my chinchilla Tribble (female 7yrs old) tonight, I noticed her entire genital regions were absolutely covered in thick sticky stinky green poop. (Her genital area looks fine, just dirty, No prolapse) After cleaning her up I investigated the cage. She hasn't been given anything new or different and she eats oxbow chinchilla deluxe and oxbow Timothy hay. The only unusual thing I found in her cage was this bit of different plant material mixed in with the hay she had pulled out of the holder. (Shown next to inches for scale) Any idea what this is, if it could have caused the issues with her stools, and if not, what things could have caused this?
Best chinchilla pellets?
Hi everyone,
I was wondering what the best chinchilla pellets are (well, best for a reasonable price!)
I started out with kaytee because I'm new to chinchillas but I learned its not great food. I ordered oxbow for them, but they simply don't like it as much. They seemed to eat a lot more pellets when they were on kaytee. What's a good brand that isn't oxbow that they might like?

Chinchilla boarding/sitter in San Diego area?
Does anyone know of a boarding facility in the san diego area that has experience with chinchillas? Anyone out there in the san diego area that wants to set up a chinchilla sitting exchange?
I'm planning a two week trip and need to know my three chins will be well cared for in my absence.
Thanks!

Chinchilla Vitals
SO, I recently had some discussion on the benefit of taking a list of "normal" or "within range" vitals statistics along on vet visits. Especially for new owners, going to a new vet. I feel that not enough vets really KNOW what is normal and this can lead to misdiagnosis and worse. SO, can anyone post some ranges for things such as body temperature, heart rate, glucose levels...or any other vitals that may be important to have along? I fully intend to put these on a printable card for delivery with all chinchillas to their new homes!

Are either of these treats ok?
I don't usually look for treats in a pet store and stick with the shredded wheat, but today I was at a locally owned pet store and noticed Oxbox Simple Rewards Timothy Treats and Oxbow Barley Biscuits, was wondering if either of these are ok?
Plane travel
I was wondering if you could give any advice on traveling with chins... we currently live in florida and are moving to japan. We are flying to Oregon, will be there 9 days then flying to japan. The flight to japan our chin will have to be flown with a pet relocation service because the military flight wont accept him on the flight. The flight will be 15 hours, in cargo, will that be too much stress for him? I want him with us, but want what's best for him.
Greetings from Colorado Springs!
Hey all,
I'm Corina, new here!
I have a 7 month old male black velvet named Pabu. (Name is a reference to Korra, and also a Tibetan word for puffball). We live in Colorado Springs, and are fairly new to the area.
These forums have been a huge resource to me as a new chin parent, and I love seeing all the pictures of member's chinnies!
Thanks to everyone for the info and stories.

Black Velvets and Clumsiness
Hello all,
My husband and I have a new chin, black velvet, 7 months old. He is adjusting very well to his new environment, despite the breeder's warnings that he is really "jumpy" and "may take longer to fully tame".
That being said, we let him have short playtimes in the evening when he asks, and put him back in his cage after about 20-30 minutes. He seems happy, and will occasionally wall surf a bit, but he is a very poor jumper, and knocks into a lot of things. Is this normal? I am worried about him hurting himself in his playful clumsiness. The other Chinchillas I have had experience with were both older and standard coloring, so it makes me wonder if the black velvet mutations have bad eyesight or something of the sort? Are there other specifics I should watch out for with the Black velvets? I've read something about excessive shaking, but have yet to see that with my boy.
Sorry for the wall of text, just very curious about others' experiences.

Separation??
Okay so I'm at a bit of a crossroads. I want a Chinchilla and have sufficient time to take care of him or her, but I'm in college and when I go home for the summers, I stay in a house with no AC! I understand that chinchilla'so cannot be in extreme heat, so I'm wondering if I could have a friend watch him/her for the summers? I don't know if that long of a seperation would cause the chinchilla to become confused or nervous, or if he/she would be fine, as long as my friend gives him/her lots of attention! Please help me! I don't want to confuse the chinchilla by having it with me for 9 months out of the year and with a friend for 3 months, but a chinchilla sounds like a wonderful pet to have!
Thank you!
Thank you!

A few q's regarding temp
This was the first summer I had to be Tigger in the basement because I was working full time, usually he was in constant AC upstairs because I was always home, so I have been nervous all summer even though he's been in the basement.
I got a dehumidifier and it works well, but it seems to make the room feel more warm, is this normal? He always seemed comfortable, but I turned it off for a couple days and it seemed a little cooler for some reason, just wondering if this happened with anyone else using a dh. Not sure if I should continue to use it everyday or not.
I wanted to get a portable ac, but can't really put it in the window where he is, so it was pretty useless, I may be able to put it in the other room the ventilation goes outside which I'm checking tomorrow. Anyway, the room would only get between 68-70 degrees with the dehumidifier on all the time, I know that's nearing too warm for a chin, not there yet, but 70 is getting too close imo or at least that's when I always started to get worried.
Also, I noticed some of his fur gets loose, so I guess sheds, not a lot that you can tell where he sheds and it's not all around shedding, is this normal and contributed specifically with temperature or is it normal, is hasn't been happening for awhile just recently.
So I know that's a lot of rambling but I always worry every summer, even though he always does fine, for the first maybe three years him and Eeyore were always in the basement with no dehumidifier and never had an issue. But I still always worry since it can become a big issue quick with the heat.

Was he choking??
My chin was acting very strange suddenly, he had his ears pulled down, he was stretching his neck out and it seemed like he was having difficulty breathing. I quickly grabbed him (Safely) and began massaging his neck (gently) and he perked up after a few rubs and started trying to get loose so I set him down. He seems happy now and is running around again. Was he choking? Has anyone ever experienced this?? I was really scared and acted quickly just hoping. I called my vet and the exotic pet vet was not on call and the emergency vet had no experience. I live in a rather small city. Any ideas are welcome.
What size hole can chins fit through?
I'm looking for a cage or I may build my own and I'm also chin proofing a room. I'd rather not build or buy a cage and have my little furball escape because the gaps on the sides are too large, so what size of holes can chins fit through? Would 1"x1" gaps for the wiring be fine or does it need to be smaller?
Custom wood item
I am looking for someone who makes custom wood items. My chins currently have a pretty flat play area, and Cloud loves to climb. I am thinking of a sort of pillar with ledges spiraling up it, or going up randomly to make for super interesting climbing. I want a hidey house around the base for stability and hiding purposes. I was thinking about 4 feet tall for the whole thing, maybe as high as 5 feet. Could anyone make such a thing or know who could make such a thing? I'm willing to pay for materials and labor for it. Let me know, thanks.

My chin dont let me close to her
Hello! I have a female chin from closely 2 years.. the problem is that she dont let me close to her. My little sister was teasing her before (now she doesn't).. Now maybe Capu hates me and she will never love me :cry3::cry3::cry3: Maybe my sister too... I remember how hard I asked my mom, and when finally got her- BAM! This... I really wanna pet who will love me, like on the hundred YT channels with happy chinchillas.. please help until its too late :( I dont wanna lost my chin :cry3:
Breeding Age
I'm curious about up to what age chinchillas can healthily breed. I keep seeing that females can breed as early as 7 months (I've seen 7-9 depending on the site), but I've never seen up to what age. I'm not planning on breeding chins, but of course when dealing with such beautiful animals it is a future possibily.
Hello From Indiana!
Hello! I actually got into chins not too long ago. I was looking for a pet that I'll be able to keep at school for my anmial science class fo the first half of second semester this year (don't worry, they'll will still be very well taken care of). I saw an adorable chinchilla at a pet store and surprisingly my mom agreed that I could buy one. I haven't gotten her yet, but I came to this site to learn more and find out what's actually best for them (treats, cage, etc.) since so many sites say different things.
Wire bottom vs solid
I'm gettin a chinchilla soon and was hoping that someone could tell me the pros and cons of a wire bottom cage (openings 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch) versus a solid bottom cage. Thank you to anyone and everyone who helps me decide which will be best for my little chin!
